Traditional French Toast

July 22, 2024

Traditional French toast has a long and flavorful history rooted in tradition. Despite its name, French toast didn’t actually originate in France. Versions of this beloved dish date back to ancient Rome, where stale bread was soaked in a milk and egg mixture before being fried. However, the French later perfected and popularized the dish as pain perdu, or “lost bread,” giving it the French name we use today.

Classic French Toast

In French households, pain perdu was a clever and delicious way to avoid food waste. Leftover bread was transformed into a warm, comforting breakfast, often sweetened with sugar or honey. Over time, this simple recipe became a cherished tradition, especially on weekends or during special family meals. French families passed the recipe down through generations, and it remains a staple in French cuisine.

The tradition of French toast eventually spread around the world. In the United States, it became a breakfast favorite served with maple syrup, powdered sugar, and fruit. While the toppings and techniques may vary, the heart of traditional French toast—a mixture of eggs, milk, and bread—has stayed the same. Many still choose French bread for its sturdy texture and ability to soak up the custard mixture beautifully.

French toast is more than just food, it represents comfort, tradition, and the magic of turning everyday ingredients into something extraordinary. Whether served at a French café, a family brunch, or a holiday breakfast table, this dish brings people together.

Even today, French toast is celebrated for its ability to adapt—whether you keep it classic or add your own flair. No matter how it’s prepared, the tradition of French toast continues to honor its humble French origins while remaining a global favorite. It’s a timeless dish with a rich past and a delicious future.

    I don’t know, my toast was soggy… maybe I didn’t dip it right? 🤔

I modified it a bit by adding nutmeg but it turned out great! Thanks!

    1. 4 stars
Nutmeg? That’s an interesting twist! I usually stick to the classic recipe, but I might have to try that. Thanks for the idea!

French toast? More like French fail! This didn’t work at all! 😡

  4. 3 stars
Looks good! But I always thought french toast was with cheese. Am I wrong?

    1. User avatar Filomena Wiza says:

      4 stars
You’re not wrong, but traditional french toast doesn’t have cheese! It’s more about the sweet taste. Give it a try without cheese!

  5. User avatar bruno.mertz38 says:

Not as great as everyone says. I mean, it’s just sawed up bread in milk. 🤔

  6. User avatar katherine.ohara70 says:

    2 stars
Why do I need 2 cups of milk? Seems like too much for just a few slices! 🤔

    1. 5 stars
The milk helps create a custard-like mixture that soaks into the bread. It makes it super moist and delicious! Trust the recipe! 😊

  7. User avatar elsie.hackett says:

    3 stars
Just okay, doesn’t taste like the French toast I had in France. Too sweet maybe?

  8. 2 stars
French toast is basically just bread dipped in egg, right? 🤷‍♂️

  9. User avatar robyn.mcclure5 says:

    2 stars
I don’t know… I tried it but it came out soggy. Maybe I dipped the bread too long?

    1. 4 stars
Maybe try dipping the bread for a shorter time. It shouldn’t be soggy if cooked right!

Looks good, but I don’t think it can be that great. French toast is just bread, right?

    2. 5 stars
I totally agree! This French toast recipe is a winner. I also added some berries on top, and it was amazing!

  16. 4 stars
I didn’t have vanilla so I used almond extract. Still tasted great! Who needs vanilla anyway?

    1. User avatar Flame Atronach says:

      2 stars
But like… isn’t vanilla kinda essential to French toast? I dunno about this hack.

    2. 4 stars
I think almond extract is a good alternative! Gotta get creative sometimes. 😊

  17. 1 star
Why do people add vanilla? I thought it was just for flavor but it seemed to make it weird.

    1. User avatar fern.wehner says:

      2 stars
I dunno, I think vanilla’s overrated. Just adds more fuss. I make mine without it and it’s just fine.

    2. User avatar Thalassa says:

      5 stars
Vanilla is like magic! It adds depth to sweet dishes, making them taste richer. You might not notice it in some recipes, but it helps balance flavors. Give it another shot!

  18. User avatar elma.oberbrunner0 says:

    4 stars
This is just like my grandma used to make, so nostalgic! I love it. Much better than store-bought!!

  19. 4 stars
Yum! But I forgot the sugar and it still turned out great! Less sweet is good too.

I accidentally spilled cinnamon into the egg mix, but it turned out super delish! Browned toast for the win! All good!

    1. User avatar allen.olson1953 says:

      4 stars
Cinnamon in the egg mix?! That’s bold! But honestly, it sounds kinda good. I’ll have to try that sometime! 🍞

  23. 5 stars
Perfect breakfast for lazy Sundays! I used brioche bread, yum! 10/10 would recommend! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

    1. User avatar thad.goldner says:

      4 stars
I love French toast! But honestly, the real trick is using stale bread. It holds the mixture better, ya know? Just a thought!

  24. User avatar elbert.stamm59 says:

    3 stars
This was okay but I expected more flavor. Maybe I did something wrong? 😕

  25. User avatar tesha.beier90 says:

    2 stars
Boring recipe. Just eggs and bread, like, where is the excitement? Can’t believe people rave about French toast.

  26. 3 stars
Really easy to make but too sweet for my taste. I prefer it plain. 🤷‍♂️

    1. 3 stars
Too sweet? Really? I think it’s perfect as it is, especially with syrup! But everyone has their preferences, I suppose.

    2. User avatar dante.ziemann says:

      4 stars
I get what you mean! I like it plain too. Sometimes the sweetness can be overwhelming. Just butter for me!

  27. 5 stars
I used almond milk instead and it worked just fine!

  28. User avatar wellRespected says:

    5 stars
OMG this French toast was amazing!! I added some fresh berries and it took it to the next level. Will make again! 🥰

  29. 4 stars
It turned out okay… but I prefer mine a bit crunchier.

    1. User avatar Android 20 says:

      5 stars
I agree! A little crunch makes all the difference. Maybe try toasting the bread a bit longer next time?

    2. User avatar numbers.kautzer5 says:

      2 stars
But French toast ain’t suppose to be crunchy! It’s meant to be soft and sweet. You’re doing it wrong!

  30. User avatar sean.considine says:

    5 stars
    TOAST!!!! LOVE IT 🥳

    1. User avatar Wendie Beatty says:

      3 stars

French toast is the best! I love how fluffy it turns out. 😋

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree! This recipe is super simple and always a hit at my brunches. Love that it doesn’t require fancy ingredients!

    2. User avatar torrie.pacocha18 says:

      3 stars
Good but my bread got too soggy. Maybe I dipped it too long? Anyway, still tasted okay with syrup, I guess.

  33. User avatar vickey.wolff38 says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but I prefer using heavier cream instead of milk. Makes it creamier.

  34. User avatar GOPster says:

    1 star
What is wrong with this recipe? My toast burned and I followed everything. Disappointing!

    1. 4 stars
Sorry to hear that! Maybe the skillet was too hot? It’s easy to burn toast if it’s set too high.

  35. 5 stars
This is so easy I can’t believe I never tried it before!

  36. User avatar ALTplusF4 says:

    5 stars
This is the easiest recipe ever! I made it for my parents and they thought I was a chef! 😂

  37. User avatar garnett.willms says:

I followed the recipe exactly, but my toast turned out soggy. What did I do wrong? 🙁

  38. User avatar teri.macgyver1997 says:

I think you forgot to put an instruction to serve it with fruits. Just saying.

  39. User avatar carter.gleichner1994 says:

I’m not sure if I did this right. The bread got kinda soggy. 🙁

  40. User avatar allen.okuneva says:

    3 stars
Too sweet for my taste, and I spilled a whole jar of syrup on it by accident. Ugh.

    1. User avatar lulu.harvey39 says:

      4 stars
I understand, sometimes syrup can be way too much! You could try less syrup next time.

  41. User avatar Maxima Braun V says:

    4 stars
So good! But can you use any bread?

  42. User avatar angelo.rath2019 says:

    2 stars
Does it really need that much sugar? Seems excessive to me. 😬

  43. User avatar olive.mcglynn says:

    4 stars
Just made this for breakfast. My kids loved it! So easy to make. Thanks!

  44. 3 stars
I thought it was okay, but I’ve had better. Maybe I need to tweak the recipe?
