Berry French Toast Casserole

June 19, 2025

Berry French Toast Casserole is a delightful twist on the classic French breakfast dish, combining the rich flavors of custard-soaked bread with the sweet-tart burst of fresh berries. This baked casserole is the perfect make-ahead option for brunch, holidays, or any time you want a stress-free morning meal that still feels indulgent.

The foundation of this French toast casserole begins with thick slices of day-old bread—brioche, challah, or French bread work beautifully—soaked in a creamy mixture of eggs, milk, vanilla, and a touch of cinnamon. Once the bread is fully coated, it’s layered in a baking dish with a medley of berries such as blueberries, raspberries, and sliced strawberries. The berries add both color and a fresh, juicy contrast to the richness of the toast.

What sets this dish apart from traditional French toast is the baking process. Instead of pan-frying individual slices, the casserole is assembled ahead of time and baked all at once, making it an excellent choice for feeding a crowd. As it bakes, the bread puffs up slightly and the berries soften, creating a beautifully textured dish that’s crispy on top and soft inside.

Before serving, a light dusting of powdered sugar and a drizzle of maple syrup or berry compote takes this French-inspired casserole to the next level. You can also add a dollop of whipped cream or a spoonful of Greek yogurt for an extra touch of decadence.

With its comforting warmth and vibrant flavor, Berry French Toast Casserole brings the charm of a French café breakfast to your own kitchen. It’s easy to prepare, customizable, and guaranteed to impress anyone who sits at your table. Whether it’s a holiday morning or a weekend treat, this French toast casserole is a delicious way to start the day.

Why do we need heavy cream and milk? Seems excessive. I just used milk and it was fine.

  6. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

I found this recipe too rich for my taste. Maybe less cream next time? Not a fan of the consistency.

    1. User avatar edythe.bogan2010 says:

      4 stars
I think you might just be sensitive to cream! I loved it, but maybe try using more milk next time instead? It might balance it out! 😊

This recipe is amazing! My kids loved it and it was super easy to make. A real breakfast treat!

Looks good but my bread got too soggy. 😕 Maybe I let it soak too long?

  9. 5 stars
Yum yum! Perfect for holiday brunches, me and my family devoured it.

  10. 4 stars
I didn’t have berries so I used bananas instead. Still turned out great!

  11. User avatar brandy.bailey8 says:

I don’t know… I followed the recipe exactly, but it turned out soggy. Maybe my bread was too fresh? Not sure I would try again.

    1. User avatar timothy.fritsch says:

      4 stars
Soggy bread can happen if it soaks too long, or if the bread is too fresh! Try letting it sit a little less next time. Don’t give up!

  12. User avatar norma.bogan says:

    3 stars
Why do you use 6 eggs? That sounds like too many to me. I usually do 3. Gonna try my way instead.

    1. User avatar joaquin.hills says:

      3 stars
3 eggs seem too little for me. You gotta balance it right, or it’ll be dry. 😕

    2. 4 stars
I think the 6 eggs make it richer! But hey, do what suits you best! 🥚

  13. User avatar jed.reilly73 says:

Pls tell me if I can use just regular bread instead of fancyyy French bread? I have white bread at home.

    1. User avatar Dominic Vernius says:

      4 stars
Sure! White bread works too, just won’t taste as fancy. It’s food, it’s fine! 🤷‍♀️

    2. User avatar jeff.mante2008 says:

      3 stars
You can use regular bread, but it might get mushy! French bread is drier and better for this kind of dish. Just saying!

  14. User avatar greta.zieme20 says:

    5 stars
Best breakfast ever! I used all the berries I had and even added some nuts. Totally worth the calories! Yum!

    2. 3 stars
Sounds good, but why do you need heavy cream? Isn’t that just extra calories? I bet it could work with just milk.

Looks good, but I can’t eat eggs. Any suggestions for a substitute? Maybe just banana? 🤔

    1. User avatar treva.carter says:

You could try using flaxseed meal mixed with water instead of eggs! It works well in baked goods. 😄

  28. User avatar oralee.lind41 says:

    4 stars
Delicious! I subbed yogurt for the heavy cream and it turned out great. Will make again for sure.

  29. 3 stars

  30. User avatar thad.mills says:

Not what I expected. Thought it would be sweeter. 👎

    1. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

      4 stars
I thought it was sweet enough. Maybe try adding more sugar next time?

  32. 2 stars
Not my fave. The texture was kinda weird for me. I prefer regular French toast I guess.

  33. 5 stars
    WOW!!! I gave it a 5 cause I LOVE french toast! 🙂

  34. User avatar Tom Bombadil says:

    3 stars
Why’d you put cream in it? Isn’t that unnecessary? Seems a bit extra to me.

  35. User avatar leon.nader says:

    4 stars
I thought it would be hard to make, but it’s actually quite easy! Just don’t forget the soaking time.

  36. User avatar darcel.cruickshank2 says:

    2 stars
Is powdered sugar really necessary? Seems likes an unnecessary step to me.

  37. 3 stars
What’s with the heavy cream? I just used milk. Can’t taste the difference.

    1. User avatar geoWizard says:

      2 stars
But do you really need the cream? Just feels like a waste. Milk works just fine!

    2. User avatar emelia.weimann2001 says:

      5 stars
I think heavy cream adds richness that milk just can’t match. It makes everything taste better! 🤤

  38. User avatar Mora Rohan DDS says:

    4 stars
Easy recipe, but I used bread slices instead of cubes. Still worked ok!

  39. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

    3 stars
It was okay, but I think I used too much cinnamon. Maybe a little less next time. 🤔

  40. User avatar terrance.oconnell43 says:

    3 stars
It was a bit soggy for my taste. Maybe less cream next time?

  41. User avatar nella.spinka says:

    5 stars
So good! My kids couldn’t get enough. I added chocolate chips for fun, and they loved it! Yum!

  42. 1 star
Why do you bother baking it? Just eat the bread soaked in egg mixture!!!

  43. 4 stars
Why do you have to let it sit for 30 mins? Can’t we just bake it right away? 🤷

  44. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

    5 stars
This was a hit at our brunch! Everyone loved it! 😍

    1. 5 stars
That sounds amazing! 🍓 I can’t wait to try it for my next gathering. Thanks for sharing!

Looks good, but isn’t it a bit too rich? I don’t know about all that cream and sugar!

  49. User avatar odette.grant27 says:

    2 stars
I don’t know… It seemed too eggy for me. 🤔

  50. 4 stars
The recipe is pretty simple, but I have a question: can I use different berries? What if I use bananas instead?

    1. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

      3 stars
I don’t think bananas will work well in this recipe, it might get too mushy. Just use the berries like the recipe says!

    2. User avatar kasey.macejkovic9 says:

      4 stars
You can definitely use different berries! Bananas might be tricky though, they don’t have the same juicy flavor as berries. I’d stick to berries if I were you!

  51. User avatar peggy.harris says:

    4 stars
I just threw all the ingredients together without waiting. It still came out great!

  52. User avatar alfredia.witting says:

    2 stars
I dunno, I thought it was gonna be sweet, but it was too plain. Didn’t taste much like berries.

    2. User avatar hilario.turcotte20 says:

      3 stars
I mean, it looks good and all, but I think it’s too sweet for my taste. Can you tone down the sugar next time?

  57. User avatar nichelle.renner says:

    2 stars
I thought this was too sweet. 1/4 cup sugar AND maple syrup? Nah, too much for me. I’ll stick to plain French toast.

  58. User avatar bobbie.thiel89 says:

    4 stars
Can you use any berries? I only have blackberries. Do you think it will work?

  59. User avatar adalberto.mclaughlin56 says:

Instructions were confusing and I burned it. Now I’m just sad. 🙁

    1. User avatar jane.howe4 says:

      4 stars
I’m really sorry to hear that! The instructions can be tricky sometimes. Maybe you can give it another shot? Don’t give up!

  60. User avatar iona.willms55 says:

    2 stars
Is it really necessary to soak the bread for 30 mins? I might just skip that.

    1. 3 stars
Nah, you can totally skip it if you want. Just make sure the bread is stale or it won’t hold the mix well. But it might not taste as rich..

    2. User avatar Uh Shenlong says:

      5 stars
I think soaking is super important! It helps the bread absorb all those yummy flavors. You might end up with a dry casserole if you skip it.

  61. 5 stars
About time I found a recipe that my picky eater likes! Success!

  62. User avatar hermelinda.wintheiser says:

    1 star
I think french toast should be cooked differently. This just seems wrong to me. 🤷‍♂️

    1. 3 stars
This seems easy, but french toast is always better when made in a pan, right? Oven baking can make it too soggy. 🤔

    2. 5 stars
I get what you mean! Everyone has their own way of making french toast, but I think this recipe sounds delicious anyway. Trying it out! 😊

  63. User avatar Grìma Wormtongue says:

    5 stars
Berry good recipe! Will make again. Next time I might use bananas too!

  64. User avatar marcelle.skiles says:

    3 stars
I think its okay, but I ain’t making it again. It was a bit to mushy for me.

  65. 5 stars
This was a huge hit at our family brunch! So delicious and easy to make. Will definitely make again!

  66. User avatar sonny.johns80 says:

Perfect for lazy Sundays! Made it with fresh strawberries and blueberries, soooo good!

  67. User avatar Samuel Volkman says:

Baked it for 60 mins and it was still soggy in the middle! What did I do wrong? 😩

  68. User avatar elinor.kozey31 says:

    4 stars
Simple but taste good! My kids loved it. They asked for seconds. Yay for breakfasts!

  69. User avatar Jitan Sa'mi says:

    3 stars
I’m not sure about using heavy cream. Seems like too much fat for a breakfast dish.

  70. User avatar laverne.ryan84 says:

    5 stars
I love the cinnamon in this! Really adds a lot of flavor 🥰. My new favorite breakfast dish!

  71. 4 stars
Yummy! But I accidentally added way too much sugar. Oops! Still a hit, though.

    1. User avatar felton.weimann says:

      5 stars
Too much sugar? That’s a classic mistake! But hey, it sounds like you still made it work. Life’s all about those happy accidents, right?
