French Dip Sandwich

January 8, 2025

French Dip Sandwich is a hearty and comforting dish, perfect for anyone craving a rich, flavorful meal. This beloved sandwich features thinly sliced roast beef, piled high on a soft hoagie or baguette, and served with a savory au jus for dipping. The combination of tender, juicy beef and the warm, flavorful broth makes for an unforgettable sandwich experience that’s both indulgent and satisfying.

The key to a great French Dip Sandwich is the roast beef. Typically, thinly sliced roast beef is the go-to choice, whether homemade or deli-style. The beef is seasoned with simple spices like garlic, salt, and pepper, and roasted to perfection so that it’s tender and juicy. For extra flavor, the beef is often simmered in a broth made from beef stock, wine, and herbs, which adds depth to the meat and becomes the perfect dipping sauce.

The sandwich is typically served on a French baguette, hoagie roll, or any sturdy bread that can hold up to the dipping sauce without falling apart. The bread is often lightly toasted to add a bit of crunch and to prevent it from becoming soggy. Once the roast beef is piled on the bread, it’s sometimes topped with melted cheese, such as Swiss or provolone, for a creamy, savory finish.

The pièce de résistance is the au jus – a flavorful beef broth served alongside the sandwich for dipping. The au jus is often made with the drippings from the roast beef, combined with beef stock, onions, and herbs, resulting in a savory, rich sauce that perfectly complements the meat and adds moisture to each bite.

French dip sandwiches are an ideal comfort food, whether you’re enjoying them for lunch, dinner, or as a hearty appetizer. Pair them with crispy fries or a side salad for a complete meal. This classic sandwich brings together simple ingredients to create a flavorful and satisfying experience that’s both easy to make and impossible to resist.

It turned out ok, but I think more garlic would make it better. Also, is provolone the best cheese for this? I used cheddar instead.

I totally agree with you! Garlic always enhances flavor. And while provolone is great, I think cheddar could also work. It’s all about personal taste!

More garlic? Seems like overkill. And what’s wrong with cheddar? It tastes good too, right?

I tried this but it was a bit too salty for my taste. Maybe I’ll use low-sodium broth next time.

I think the garlic powder is a bit much, maybe half a teaspoon would be better?
