Turkish chicken and yogurt soup, known as “Tavuklu Yoğurt Çorbası,” is a comforting, creamy dish that brings together the richness of chicken with the tang of yogurt in a uniquely satisfying way. It’s a recipe rooted in tradition and loved for both its soothing flavors and nourishing qualities.
At its heart, this soup is a beautiful balance of protein, dairy, and gentle spice. Tender, shredded chicken provides substance, while plain yogurt gives the broth a tangy depth that sets it apart from cream-based soups. A touch of flour and egg yolk helps thicken the base, creating a smooth, velvety texture without feeling too heavy.
What makes this soup truly shine is the aromatic finishing oil often drizzled on top just before serving. It’s usually made with butter or olive oil infused with dried mint, Aleppo pepper (or paprika), and sometimes garlic. This final flourish adds a warm, fragrant layer that complements the creamy yogurt and savory chicken.
The preparation is simple and doesn’t require hard-to-find ingredients, which makes it a great choice for weeknight cooking. You can use leftover cooked chicken or poach a few pieces while preparing the rest of the soup. Be sure to temper the yogurt by mixing it with a bit of warm broth before adding it to the pot, this step prevents curdling and keeps the soup smooth.
Serve it with warm flatbread or a sprinkle of fresh herbs for an extra touch. It’s especially popular during colder months, but its light, tangy profile makes it suitable year-round.
Whether you’re exploring Turkish cuisine for the first time or looking for a new spin on chicken soup, this yogurt-based version offers a delicious and healthy twist. It’s comfort food, yes, but with elegance, the kind of dish that makes you pause to savor each spoonful.

Ingredients
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 onion finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 2 carrots diced
- 2 stalks celery diced
- 500 g boneless skinless chicken breasts, diced
- 1 liter chicken broth
- 1 tsp thyme dried
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1 cup plain yogurt
- Salt and pepper to taste
- parsley chopped, for garnish, fresh
Instructions
- In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion, garlic, carrots, and celery and cook until the vegetables are tender, about 5 minutes.
- Add the chicken to the pot and cook until browned on all sides, about 5 minutes.
- Pour in the chicken broth and add the thyme and oregano. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and tender.
- Remove the pot from the heat and allow it to cool slightly. Using an immersion blender or regular blender, puree the soup until smooth.
- Return the pot to the heat and stir in the yogurt. Cook over low heat until heated through, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve the soup hot, garnished with fresh parsley.
Wow, this is a great recipe! So easy to make and my kids loved it too. Will make it again!
Ill stick to my chicken noodle soup, this just ain’t it for me.
This soup is absolutely delicious! I can’t believe how creamy it turned out. Perfect for a cold day!
Why would you put yogurt in soup? Sounds wrong but I tried it and it’s surprisingly good!
I was skeptical too at first, but yogurt adds such a nice creaminess! It balances the flavors so well.
I’ve never heard of this meal and I was a bit skeptical to put yogurt in a soup, but your comment changed my mind. I’ll try this and let you know how it turned out.
How do you puree this withouth a blender? I don’t have one.
I never thought yogurt would make soup good. Surprised me, I must say!
I don’t think chickens and yogurt belong together. This sounds weird.
This is a family favorite now! The kids love it and it’s so filling.
I tried this recipe but it didn’t turn out like I thought. The yogurt made it kinda weird. Not for me.
I’m sorry to hear that! Yogurt can be tricky in soups sometimes. Maybe less yogurt next time?
Hi, Cynthia. Thank you so much, feel free to add your version of the recipe. There is a “SUBMIT YOUR RECIPE” option on the home page. We’d love that!
This soup is absolutely delicious! The yogurt makes it so creamy. My family loved it!
I think the yogurt makes it too thick. I like my soups more liquidy… Just my opinion!
I totally get what you’re saying! I usually prefer my soups a bit runnier too. Have you tried reducing the yogurt? That might help!
I followed the recipe but the chicken was a bit dry. Maybe I should’ve cooked it less? Not sure I’ll try this again.
Pretty good but I added noodles. Soup needs something to chew, right?
Never thought to blend soup before! It turned out super smooth. Also, I used chicken thighs instead, yum!
Too much garlic for my taste! Ended up overpowering the whole dish. Maybe reduce it next time.
Is yogurt even supposed to be heated? I dunno…
Soup recipe? Sounds boring… I don’t usually like Turkish food either. I’ll pass.
Come on, it’s just soup! How can it be boring? You should at least give it a try before judging!
I get it, not everyone likes Turkish food. But this soup is really comforting and tasty! You might be missing out.
Too many veggies. I just wanted chicken soup! Less carrots more chicken please!
I followed the recipe but it just didn’t taste right to me… maybe I missed something?
Wow! So easy to make! I just added some chili flakes for a kick and it was perfect! Yum!
Very easy to make! Perfect for a cozy dinner. A sprinkle of lemon on top worked great!
Too much garlic for my taste. Cut it in half next time.
This soup is amazing! So creamy and full of flavor. Definitely a new favorite in our house. Will make again!
Amazing! Just like my mom used to make in Turkey! Thank you for sharing!
Used the recipe but forgot the thyme 🤦, still tasted pretty good tho.
Glad it still turned out well! Thyme is nice but not mandatory. I might try it without too next time!
You forgot tha thyme?? Oof, that musta been hard! But hey, soup’s still soup!
Delicious! I didn’t have thyme, so I used basil and it still rocked! Thanks for the recipe!
Easy to make but tasted bland. I’ll add more garlic next time.
This soup is delicious! I added some spices and it turned out great. Thanks for sharing!
I’m glad you enjoyed it! What spices did you add? I’d love to try it too!
Wow, this soup is amazing! So creamy and full of flavor. Will definitely make again.
I hate soup but this one is an exception. Tasty and hearty, even I enjoyed it!
I didn’t have thyme, used basil instead. Still turned out good! Experimenting is fun.
I tried this recpie but it was a bit too thick for my liking. Maybe less yogurt next time.
Yummy! 😋
My kid didn’t like it, but my husband ate two bowls. It’s just ok I guess. Not terrible but not great either.
