Pumpkin Cheese Ball

October 22, 2025

A pumpkin cheese ball is the ultimate fall party appetizer – festive, creamy, and irresistibly good. Shaped like a small pumpkin and packed with rich flavor, it’s the kind of dish that instantly becomes the centerpiece of any autumn gathering. Whether you’re hosting a Halloween get-together, a cozy dinner, or a Thanksgiving feast, this cheese ball delivers both charm and taste in every bite.

At its core, a pumpkin cheese ball combines the best elements of a classic cheese spread. Cream cheese forms the smooth, tangy base, while shredded cheddar adds depth and sharpness. A touch of garlic powder, paprika, or cayenne gives it just the right amount of spice, and chopped green onions or herbs bring freshness to balance the richness. The mixture is blended until smooth, then shaped into a round ball that’s ready for its festive transformation.

To give it that signature pumpkin look, the cheese ball is rolled in crushed homemade crackers or finely shredded cheddar, giving it a vibrant orange color. Using a spoon or kitchen twine, you can gently press lines along the sides to mimic pumpkin ridges. For the final touch, a small bell pepper stem, pretzel rod, or even a celery stick is placed on top to complete the pumpkin illusion.

Beyond its stunning appearance, what makes the pumpkin cheese ball so popular is its versatility. It pairs beautifully with crackers, pretzels, fresh veggies, or even sliced apples. Each bite is creamy, cheesy, and just a little smoky, making it impossible to stop at one.

Served on a rustic wooden board surrounded by dippers, it’s the kind of appetizer that draws everyone in. It’s festive without being fussy, and it tastes every bit as good as it looks. You can prepare it a day ahead, which makes it a stress-free option for busy holiday hosts.

The pumpkin cheese ball proves that a simple idea can make a big impression. It’s fun, flavorful, and perfectly seasonal – a little bit of creativity that brings warmth, color, and a whole lot of deliciousness to your fall table.

So many cheese balls out there, this one is just ok. Not impressed.

  7. 4 stars
Yum!! 😋 I added a little garlic powder too. So good!

    cheese ball = love! 💜

Looks like a lot of calories. And I don’t even like pumpkin.

  10. User avatar chantelle.legros says:

I don’t know about pumpkin in a cheese ball, sounds weird…

  11. User avatar donn.hudson says:

    4 stars
I followed the steps and mine was kinda soft after mixing, even after chilling. I think my cream cheese wasn’t fully softened or the nuts were too dry/crumbly. Still tasted great, just didn’t look perfectly round.

  12. User avatar darryl.batz75 says:

    5 stars
Made it for a get-together and everyone kept asking where I bought it. I used walnuts and they stuck really well after chilling—next time I might chill it a bit longer than 30 min for an even cleaner shape.

  13. User avatar lauralee.ernser25 says:

    2 stars
I don’t get the “pumpkin” part. It’s just a cheese ball with a pepper stem. Like… cute, but not pumpkin-y. Flavor is fine.

This pumpkin cheese ball is A-MAZING for fall parties! Everyone loved it!

So good! I added some garlic powder for an extra kick. Y’all should try it. Yum!

    1. 5 stars
I love that idea! Garlic powder really does add a nice flavor. Can’t wait to try it myself! 😍

    2. 3 stars
Garlic? Seems weird for a pumpkin dish. I’m not so sure about that. 🤔

  17. User avatar george.mcglynn2003 says:

    5 stars
Yummy! Just like a pumpkin but cheese! My kids loved it, and it was easy to make. Will do it again!

    1. User avatar King Vegeta says:

      3 stars
This sounds kinda weird, like cheese should not be a pumpkin. But okay, if the kids liked it, that’s what matters.

    2. User avatar zola.kub says:

      5 stars
I’m so glad your kids loved it! It’s perfect for fall gatherings. I like to add a little garlic powder too for extra flavor.

  18. 1 star
This cheese ball thing is not my style. Just give me plain cheese, please.

  19. 2 stars
My ‘cheese ball’ didn’t really ball up. I used cream cheese straight from the fridge. I guess ‘softened’ means like, actually soft.

    1. User avatar keturah.gleason44 says:

      5 stars
Yeah, that totally makes sense. Cold cream cheese won’t blend or mold right—usually you want it actually pliable. Next time just let it sit out 20–30 mins (or microwave like 10 seconds at a time) before mixing.

    2. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

      3 stars
lol mine did the same. I didn’t chill it long enough, so it was kinda mushy and wouldn’t hold shape. Also I used pre-shredded cheddar and it felt drier? Maybe try crushing the nuts a bit finer too so they “stick.”

  20. 2 stars
I don’t get why people love pumpkin so much. This cheese ball was okay, but nothing special. Kinda bland.

    1. User avatar roscoe.labadie says:

      4 stars
I think pumpkin adds a unique flavor! This cheese ball is a bit different from traditional ones, maybe that’s why it seemed bland to you?

  21. 5 stars
Made this for a party and it vanished fast. The smoked paprika is such a nice touch—gives it that cozy “pumpkin spice but savory” vibe.

  22. User avatar Grìma Wormtongue says:

    2 stars
I followed the instructions exactly and it came out bland. I think 1 tsp onion powder wasn’t enough for my taste. Next time I’ll add garlic powder too.

  23. User avatar davis.muller1982 says:

    5 stars
I made this for a game night and it disappeared fast. The smoked paprika totally makes it feel “fall” without being too fancy. Super easy too!

  24. 3 stars
Confusing recipe. Do you really need to chill it? I just ate it right away. Anyway, my kids loved it, but I think it needed more cheese. 3 stars.

  25. User avatar ed.schroeder1 says:

    4 stars
I tried it with walnuts and loved the texture. Also, the fridge time matters—30 minutes wasn’t enough for me, I did closer to an hour.

  26. User avatar wilbert.quigley87 says:

    3 stars
Mine was a little dry after chilling, like the cheese didn’t bind as well. I think I packed the nuts too hard and lost some of the stickiness. Still tasty though.

  27. 5 stars
This was a hit at our Halloween party! Everyone loved it, especially with crackers. Will definitely make again!

  28. User avatar izetta.hodkiewicz says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical about mixing cream cheese with cheddar, but it actually works! I’ll make this again!

    1. User avatar gabriel.hoppe says:

      4 stars
I thought it sounded weird too, but I’m glad it worked out for you! Gotta try it myself.

    2. User avatar spring.hettinger1988 says:

      3 stars
Sounds easy but idk about the nuts… can I use something else? 🤔

  30. User avatar lloyd.graham says:

    3 stars
Not sure about the bell pepper stem thing. It’s cute, but can you really call it a pumpkin if it’s basically just a cheese ball with nuts?

  31. User avatar claud.hodkiewicz74 says:

    1 star
Pumpkin cheese ball? Why not just use regular cheese? Idk but it looked cute!

  32. User avatar nelia.oreilly50 says:

    5 stars
Great for Halloween! I used almonds instead of pecans and it still turned out good!

    1. User avatar deena.wyman91 says:

      5 stars
Almonds? That’s interesting! I bet it adds a nice crunch. Can’t wait to try it! 🎃

    2. 3 stars
I dunno, but isn’t it a bit weird to swap nuts just like that? I mean, pecans are kinda the thing, right? 🤔

  33. User avatar monica.beier2 says:

    5 stars
Perfect for fall gatherings! Even my picky eater liked it! 🌟

    1. User avatar kyong.schumm2025 says:

      2 stars
I dunno, the idea of mixing pumpkin and cheese seems a bit off to me. 🤔

    2. 5 stars
This sounds amazing! I can’t wait to try it for my Thanksgiving party. 🦃

  34. 5 stars
This is such a fun party appetizer! The smoked paprika gives it a nice little kick, and the nut coating makes it look super “fall” without being too fussy. 10/10 with crackers.

  35. User avatar peggy.boyer says:

    5 stars
I made this for a party and it disappeared fast. The smoked paprika is such a nice touch—adds depth without tasting weird. My only tweak: I used more cheddar because I love it.

  36. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

    3 stars
This is a great party snack, but I wish it had more seasoning or something to make it pop. I used regular paprika maybe that’s why.

    1. User avatar jamal.moen30 says:

      4 stars
Totally agree—mine was good but kinda mellow too. Next time I’m adding a little garlic powder and maybe a pinch of cayenne to really “pop.” Regular paprika might explain it; smoked paprika makes a big difference.

  37. User avatar gladys.erdman says:

    2 stars
Honestly… kinda bland for me. Like, I can taste the cheese but not enough seasoning. Maybe more paprika would help? Also my nuts didn’t cover the whole thing lol.

  38. User avatar dorcas.brekke71 says:

    1 star
My dogs wouldn’t even eat it. Probably won’t make again. Just not good. 🐕

  39. 5 stars
Pumpkin in cheese? Sounds weird, but it was a hit! I lied to my friends about it being pumpkin! 😂

  40. User avatar Sharlene Pollich IV says:

    5 stars
So tasty! I used almonds instead of pecans and it was still great. Yum!

  41. User avatar diane.friesen83 says:

    2 stars
I don’t know… I think cheese balls should be just cheese, not all this extra stuff. Kinda weird.

  42. User avatar basil.skiles says:

    4 stars
Really good and super easy. Mine was a little crumbly after chilling, so I added a tiny splash of milk to smooth it out. Still tasted amazing though.

    1. User avatar Eleonora Zemlak says:

      5 stars
Glad it still tasted amazing! Mine gets a little dry/crumbly too if I chill longer than 30 mins—adding a splash of milk makes total sense. Did you use crushed pecans or walnuts?

  43. 3 stars
Isn’t cheddar cheese supposed to be yellow? Mine turned out kinda orange. 🤔

    1. User avatar Noelia Wehner Sr. says:

      4 stars
Cheddar can be different colors, it depends on the brand and if they add coloring. Don’t stress! 😄

  44. User avatar eric.hoeger59 says:

    3 stars
I didn’t have nuts so I used crushed chips instead. Not the same but still tasty.

  45. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly but mine wouldn’t really “ball” up. Maybe my cream cheese was too cold? Still tasted great though.

  46. User avatar christina.kuhn29 says:

    3 stars
It was ok… Not the best I’ve had. Seems a bit dry to me.

    1. 4 stars
I thought it was really delicious! Maybe try adding more spices or a bit of sour cream next time? It can really help with moisture.

  47. User avatar arline.greenholt22 says:

    5 stars
The bell pepper stem garnish is genius lol. Totally looks like a little pumpkin on the table.

  48. 4 stars
Delicious! I added some garlic powder for extra flavor. Will make it again!

    1. 5 stars
Garlic powder is a good idea! I never thought of that. Can’t wait to try it myself. Thanks for the tip!

  49. User avatar charlie.mante35 says:

    2 stars
I tried making this but the cheese ball fell apart. Maybe too much cream cheese?

  50. 4 stars
Made this for my kids and they gobbled it up! Pretty easy to make too.

  51. 4 stars
lol “1 piece bell pepper stem” is so specific 😂 Still, it looks like a real pumpkin on the table. Would recommend.

    1. User avatar ruthe.jaskolski1992 says:

      5 stars
😂 Yeah the “bell pepper stem” detail is cracking me up, but it really does sell the pumpkin vibe. I’m making this for my next snack board!

  52. User avatar Flame Atronach says:

    5 stars
SO GOOD!! I even added some garlic powder for extra flavor. Def making again!

    1. User avatar senaida.rice49 says:

      5 stars
Glad you liked it! Garlic powder is a great twist! 🧄

  53. User avatar Ford Prefect says:

    4 stars
The bell pepper stem as the pumpkin top is such a cute idea. I’m not usually into cheese balls, but this one might convert me.

  54. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

    5 stars
This recipe is simple but somehow fancy. The crushed nuts make it look like something from a deli. 10/10 would serve again.

  55. User avatar hiram.bogisich67 says:

    2 stars
Not gonna lie, this seems kinda basic. Like… cheese and nuts is always cheese and nuts.

    1. User avatar tortoise says:

      4 stars
I get what you mean, but basic doesn’t mean bad. The paprika + onion powder combo makes it way more flavorful than just “cheese and nuts.”

  56. 3 stars
The recipe is nice but too rich for my taste. Less cheese would be better.

  57. User avatar horacio.runolfsdottir25 says:

    2 stars
Why would you make a cheese ball shaped like a pumpkin? That’s just odd. Not for me.

  58. User avatar Royal Moore says:

    5 stars
Smoked paprika AND crushed nuts? Honestly, that feels like fall magic. I could just eat it with a spoon though lol.

    1. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

      5 stars
Right?! Smoked paprika with nuts is such a cozy fall combo. It totally gives “snack board but fancier” vibes.

    2. 3 stars
I’m not sure about the nuts part—won’t they get kinda chewy/crumbly on the outside? Still, spoon-eating sounds dangerous (in a good way).

  59. User avatar cruz.nikolaus says:

    2 stars
Is it really necessary to refrigerate? I just mixed it up and served it right away. Taste was fine, tho.

  60. User avatar kenny.bauch26 says:

    3 stars
Smoked paprika is the only part I fully trust. The onion powder and the crushed nuts might be a little strong together, but I’ll try it once.

    1. 5 stars
Totally get that—smoked paprika is the MVP here. I think the onion powder + nuts combo works if you don’t overdo the nuts (like, not a thick pile), and chilling helps the flavors meld.

    2. User avatar gaston.macgyver1979 says:

      3 stars
I’m not sure about onion powder with nuts… seems kinda sweet-savory clash to me 😅 But hey, you only live once. If it tastes weird add a tiny pinch more paprika or a little salt.

  61. User avatar Miss Mohammed Konopelski says:

    4 stars
Easy peasy. I didn’t have smoked paprika so I used regular and it was still good—just less “wow.”

  62. User avatar Kurt Remarque says:

    5 stars
This looks dangerously good. I made something similar once and the paprika made it feel fancy. Definitely adding the nuts for that crunch.

  63. User avatar marlin.moen2014 says:

    3 stars
Looks cute, but I’m skeptical about the “pumpkin” vibe—one bell pepper stem seems a little underwhelming. Flavor-wise it’s good though; I just wish there was more orange going on.

  64. User avatar Bilbo Baggins says:

    4 stars
I used peanut butter instead of cream cheese by mistake. Still turned out yummy!

  65. User avatar charley.murray90 says:

    3 stars
I thought this would be amazing, but it was kinda bland. Maybe more spices next time?

  66. 4 stars
Honestly 1 minute ingredients list and still came out amazing. I served it with sliced apples and it was shockingly good.

  67. User avatar jackie.gleichner2 says:

    4 stars
Tried it with walnuts. Stronger flavor than pecans but it worked. Would make again for sure.

  68. User avatar Hayden Gerlach says:

    5 stars
Smoked paprika is my favorite and this delivered. The cheddar + cream cheese combo is perfect for spreading on crackers.

  69. User avatar Liet-Kynes says:

    4 stars
I’m not usually into cheese balls, but the onion powder + cheddar combo is making me curious. Would work great on a party board.

  70. 3 stars
1 cup crushed nuts sounds like a lot—will it taste mostly nutty? Maybe reduce it a bit if you don’t like that vibe.

    1. 4 stars
Yeah, 1 cup is definitely a generous coating. I’d say the outside will taste pretty nutty, but once it’s chilling and you get a bite with cream-cheese in the middle, it balances out. Still, if you’re not a huge nut fan, half that might be perfect.

  71. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    5 stars
Made this for a party and it disappeared fast. The smoked paprika gives it such a cozy, savory vibe!

    1. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

      3 stars
Wait, is it supposed to be pumpkin colored? I did it exactly but it just looked like… cheese. Still tasted good though. Next time I’ll add more paprika.

    2. User avatar marlon.oreilly49 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—the smoked paprika makes it feel way more “cozy” than a normal cheese ball. Glad it disappeared fast!

  72. User avatar chas.marks72 says:

    4 stars
I’m not sure about the “pumpkin stem” thing—why a bell pepper stem? 😂 Still, the cheddar + cream cheese combo is always a win.

    1. 5 stars
Honestly I love the bell pepper stem idea—easy and it looks cute on the table. Cheddar + cream cheese is unbeatable though 😄

  73. User avatar Dan Streetmentioner says:

    5 stars
This was a hit at our Halloween party! Everyone loved it and it looked so cute! 🎃

    1. User avatar mellisa.lind says:

      3 stars
I dunno… cheese ball? pumpkin? Isn’t that kinda weird together? But good for you if it worked!

    2. User avatar kaitlin.price1977 says:

      5 stars
That sounds so fun! 😍 I need to try this for my next gathering. Great idea!

  74. 4 stars
I tried something similar but my cheese mixture turned kinda soft. I think I didn’t refrigerate long enough. Still tasty though—smoked paprika is a win.

  75. User avatar dario.carroll71 says:

    4 stars
It came out great, but mine was a little hard to shape at first. I think my cream cheese wasn’t soft enough. After I let it sit out longer, it worked.

    1. 4 stars
Hmm maybe. Mine was a little crumbly, so I added like a spoon more cream cheese and it stayed together better. But I also might’ve used too much nuts? Either way, good result!

    2. 5 stars
Yes! I had the same issue—when the cream cheese is still cold it’s basically impossible to shape. Letting it sit out a bit longer totally fixed it for me too.

  76. User avatar Claris Lang says:

    4 stars
I loved the crunch from the pecans. Next time I’ll chill longer than 30 minutes for a cleaner shape.

  77. User avatar Debi Grady says:

    3 stars
The nuts were hard to stick on for me. I had to press like, for a while, and even then a few spots fell off. Flavor was solid anyway.

  78. User avatar Quickbeam says:

    2 stars
Only thing I messed up was I forgot to soften the cream cheese, so it was lumpy. Still edible, just ugly 😂

  79. User avatar Gabriella says:

    4 stars
Crackers? veggies? I ate it with a spoon… no regrets. Would recommend, though the plastic wrap step is a bit annoying.

  80. User avatar jacob.schumm59 says:

    5 stars
This is such a cute holiday appetizer. The bell pepper stem looks kinda funny but in a good way—like edible scarecrow vibes. Would definitely make again.

  81. User avatar brendan.berge2007 says:

    3 stars
Mine turned out a little too soft even after 30 mins… I think my cream cheese wasn’t fully softened (or my fridge is weak?). Still tasted good!

    1. 5 stars
That definitely happens if the cream cheese isn’t truly soft—like you said. I’ve found letting it sit out 20–30 min at room temp (until it’s pliable, not just “warm”) makes a big difference. You could also try chilling a bit longer next time—like 45–60 mins.

  82. 2 stars
I followed everything exactly and mine was… bland? Like, it tasted mostly like cheese. Maybe I should’ve used a sharper cheddar or added more paprika?

    1. User avatar otis.hickle says:

      4 stars
That sounds frustrating! I’ve found the smoked paprika can get lost a bit depending on the cheddar. If yours was mild/extra creamy, it’ll come off “mostly cheese” instead of punchy. A sharper cheddar (or adding a tiny pinch more paprika) usually fixes it.

  83. User avatar tyisha.bailey10 says:

    5 stars
This is such a fun idea for fall! It tasted amazing and everyone at my party loved it! 🥳

    1. User avatar zenobia.reinger says:

      2 stars
Not sure about mixing cheese and pumpkin. Is that even a thing? 🤔

    2. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

Sounds delicious! I love pumpkin everything in the fall! 🥰

One question… is 8 oz cream cheese like half a block? I got confused and kinda guessed. 🤷‍♂️

I’d say 8 oz is like… one small brick? Not sure. I always just use the whole 8-oz package and it turns out okay 🤷‍♀️

Yes—8 oz is typically half of a standard 16 oz block of cream cheese. If yours is 8 oz pre-packed, then you’re good!

Not bad at all. I used smoked paprika and onion powder like the recipe says and it actually tastes balanced. Would make again.

I followed it exactly, but it wasn’t super flavorful to me. Next time I’ll add a pinch of salt or some garlic powder.

Tried it once and the nuts fell off after I served it. Next time I’m gonna press more firmly and maybe chill longer. Could be user error.

5 stars but I’m also confused: do you mean bell pepper stem like the actual little stem part? I just used a strip of bell pepper and it kinda worked.

Yesss 😄 glad it hit the mark—this one’s dangerously snackable!

Not sure about the bell pepper stem “pumpkin” thing—seems cute but kinda gimmicky. Maybe add actual pumpkin colors? (Like a tiny sprinkle of paprika.)

Totally get what you mean—“pumpkin stem” made me side-eye it too 😅 The bell pepper bit is cute, but a sprinkle of paprika for color would make it look way more pumpkin-y.

    2. 4 stars
Honestly I like the gimmick part. The stem looks like a little pumpkin cap and the smoked paprika already gives a warm color. No need to overthink it—if you want more pumpkin vibes just dust extra paprika on top.

I made it and it was good, but the onion powder felt a little overpowering for me. Next time I’ll go lighter.

Glad you liked it! Totally agree—onion powder can go from “nice” to “whoa” pretty fast. Next time try 1/2 tsp and taste before committing.

Smoked paprika + cheddar? Honestly, that’s my kind of flavor combo. Easy instructions too. 30 minutes seems short but maybe my fridge is strong 😂

Not gonna lie, I expected it to taste more “pumpkin-y.” It’s more like cheesy with a garnish. Still good, just not the vibe I thought.

This sounds dangerously snackable. The smoked paprika is such a nice touch—definitely making it for the next get-together.

I used pecans and they stuck really well after the chill. Next time I’ll add a tiny pinch of garlic powder because I like my cheese balls a little louder.

This is giving holiday snack vibes. I served it with pretzels and it was perfect. Would recommend for anyone who likes savory over sweet.

Super easy recipe. I made it with walnuts and it held shape beautifully. The garnish was adorable.

So easy! I used pecans instead of walnuts and it came out super neat—held together really well. The paprika flavor is the real MVP. That little bell pepper stem garnish is genius too.

I followed the steps and mine didn’t firm up after 30 minutes. Maybe my cream cheese was too warm? The flavor was fine though.

This looks like the perfect holiday snack—creamy, a little smoky, and the nut coating is such a nice texture. I’m definitely making it for my next party!

Honestly? The instructions were super easy, but the “pumpkin” stem look is hit or miss. My bell pepper stem slid off. Still tasted amazing though.
