Onions Baked with Rosemary and Cream

November 21, 2024

Onions baked with rosemary and cream is a luxurious yet simple side dish that transforms humble onions into something rich, savory, and deeply flavorful. Slow-baked until tender and caramelized, the onions develop a natural sweetness that pairs beautifully with the earthy aroma of rosemary and the indulgent richness of cream.

This dish starts with sweet or yellow onions, peeled and halved or thickly sliced. As they bake, the onions soften, mellowing in flavor and taking on a buttery texture. The addition of fresh rosemary infuses the dish with a fragrant, herbaceous note that perfectly complements the sweetness of the onions.

Heavy cream is poured over the onions before baking, creating a luscious sauce that thickens as it cooks. The cream absorbs the flavor of the onions and rosemary, turning golden and slightly bubbly around the edges. Some variations add a sprinkle of Parmesan or Gruyère on top for an extra layer of savory richness and a beautifully browned, crisp finish.

Onions baked with rosemary and cream is a versatile side dish that fits seamlessly into both holiday feasts and everyday meals. It pairs especially well with roasted meats like turkey, chicken, pork, or beef, offering a creamy contrast to crispy, roasted textures. It also complements vegetarian mains, lending depth and richness to the plate.

Despite its simplicity, this dish feels elegant and comforting — the kind of side that guests rave about and request again. It brings warmth and rustic charm to the table, with the bonus of filling the kitchen with the inviting aroma of rosemary and caramelizing onions.

For drinks, it pairs wonderfully with white wines like Chardonnay or Viognier, a dry cider, or even a crisp sparkling water with lemon.

Onions baked with rosemary and cream is proof that with just a few simple ingredients, you can create a side dish that feels both indulgent and timeless.

I dunno, I followed the recipe but my onions turned out all mushy. Maybe I left them in too long? Not sure if I’d try it again.

    1. 4 stars
Mushy onions can happen if they bake too long or at too high a temp. Maybe try checking them earlier next time!

  2. 3 stars
Why cover with foil? I never understand that part. I usually cover my food with a lid instead. Just an idea, heading off to the store to grab onions!

  3. 2 stars
Why would you put cream on onions?? Seems like a waste of good onions to me.

Onions? Really? I thought this was gonna be a stew or something! But I can’t believe how good these taste! I might even bake my socks now just to try more flavors! 😂

    1. 5 stars
I never thought onions could taste so good! Your comment made me laugh 😊. Going to try this for sure!

  5. 5 stars
This recipe is just amazing! The flavor of the rosemary with the creamy onions is like heaven. I made it for a dinner party and everyone loved it! 😍

  6. 2 stars
Is 350°F really enough? I bake at like 400°F. Seems like it’d take forever to cook.

    1. User avatar demetrice.wehner25 says:

      5 stars
I’ve always baked onions at 350°F and they come out great! It’s not about the temperature, but the time. Just give it a shot! 😊

    2. 3 stars
I dunno man, 350°F seems kinda low. What if they just turn mushy? I prefer higher temps for better browning.

This was super easy to make and tasted heavenly! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This dish is absolutely delicious! The rosemary gives it such a nice flavor. My family loved it.

    1. User avatar trinidad.mohr81 says:

I totally agree! The rosemary really takes it to a whole new level. It’s my go-to recipe now! 😋

    2. 3 stars
Sounds good, but I’m not sure about the cream. I feel like it might be too rich. Anyone tried it without??

  9. User avatar david.bahringer5 says:

    4 stars
I tried this with 5 onions, half cream and half yogurt, tasted interesting. I think I liked it better that way!

  10. User avatar Leto Atreides says:

Onion dish? Nah, I prefer my veggies steamed or raw. Pass.

    1. User avatar marcellus.corwin says:

      5 stars
You gotta try this! Baked onions are so good with that cream and rosemary. Trust me, they’re better than raw! 😋

  11. 5 stars
This is the kind of side that makes people stop scrolling. I served it with steak and everyone asked for the recipe.

  12. 4 stars
Mine didn’t get “golden brown” after the second 30 mins, but they were still really soft and creamy. Maybe my oven runs cool—next time I’ll broil for a couple minutes.

  13. 5 stars
This tastes like fancy onions from a steakhouse… my boyfriend said ‘don’t lose this recipe’.

    1. User avatar willie.schmeler1978 says:

      5 stars
Right?? It’s giving steakhouse vibes for real. I made it last night and the onions turned so sweet and creamy—like you could taste the rosemary without it being overpowering. Definitely keeping this one too!

  14. User avatar tricia.harvey says:

    3 stars
Baked onions? Sounds weird, but I gave it a shot. They came out soft but I couldn’t taste the rosemary much. A little bland.

  15. 5 stars
Simple yet delicious! I paired it with grilled chicken and wow!

  16. 2 stars
First time trying this and it was sooooo oily! Maybe I added too much oil? 🤔

  17. 1 star
    Onions? Really? No thanks. 😒

    1. User avatar wilfred.zboncak94 says:

      5 stars
Onions are great! They add so much flavor. You might want to give it a try! 😊

  18. 2 stars
Like, how do you even bake onions? Just boil em, right? Confused.

  19. User avatar Storm Atronach says:

    4 stars
Yummy! But I think I put too much cream. Next time, I’ll use less.

  20. 2 stars
Could’ve used more seasoning. Also, I think 350°F is too low—maybe 400 would brown faster? Mine looked pale.

    1. User avatar francis.maggio says:

      4 stars
Yeah, I agree on the seasoning—mine tasted a bit flat too. I’d bump up the salt/pepper (and maybe a pinch of garlic powder) next time. Also 350°F does take a while to actually brown; I’ve had better luck closer to 375–400°F uncovered at the end so it caramelizes more. Thanks for the heads-up!

  21. User avatar nickie.bergnaum says:

This recipe is great! The cream really makes the onions melt in your mouth! 👌🏼⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Can I use olive oil from the store? I got some really cheap one. 🌿

    1. User avatar Justin Casey Howells says:

      4 stars
Sure, but be careful! Cheap oils can change the flavor. Maybe try a little taste first? 👀

    2. User avatar Gandalf the Grey says:

      2 stars
I dunno, is that really a good idea? Olive oil is kinda important for the taste. Just sayin’.

  24. User avatar reginald.rice1963 says:

Can someone tell me what heavy cream is? Is it like normal cream? Thx!

  25. 3 stars
Great idea! But how many servings does this make? Seems kinda vague.

  26. User avatar Ford Prefect says:

    4 stars
I substituted almond milk for the cream and it was still good! 😋

  27. User avatar melany.mante36 says:

    2 stars
Okay but why cut sides up? I did top sides up by accident and it came out watery. Flavor was decent, but the texture was off.

    1. User avatar casey.lubowitz64 says:

      4 stars
Huh, I always do them cut-side down and mine aren’t watery 😅 But also 350°F for 30+30 might be different depending on onion size. Next time maybe cook longer til the cream reduces. Not sure why it says cut sides up tho.

    2. 5 stars
Cut sides up probably helps them brown and “seal” a bit—if they’re cut-side up, the cream can pool and keep the onions from getting that golden roast. When it’s watery, I’d try giving them a longer uncovered bake or using a deeper-ish dish so it doesn’t flood.

  28. User avatar gerry.cummings56 says:

    4 stars
Pretty simple, but I did 20 more minutes than the recipe said because my onions were huge. Still delicious though—creamy and not too salty.

  29. User avatar Del Jones says:

    5 stars
WOW! Just wow!! Who knew onions could taste this good! Definitely making again!

  30. User avatar lino.wisozk65 says:

    4 stars
I don’t even like rosemary, but this recipe changed my mind!

  31. User avatar Spider Worker says:

    3 stars
I dunno, it sounded good but the cream made it too heavy for me. I think next time I’ll use less cream or maybe milk.

  32. User avatar shon.mann1970 says:

    2 stars
These onions tasted bland to me, maybe I did something wrong. I added like a whole bag of cheese but still, not impressed.

    1. User avatar mariette.green1957 says:

      4 stars
Maybe the onions weren’t sweet enough? I usually caramelize mine before baking for extra flavor!

    2. User avatar claris.wolff1960 says:

      3 stars
Whole bag of cheese? That sounds excessive. You might have masked the flavor instead of enhancing it!

  33. 3 stars
Took way longer to bake than 60 mins! Maybe my oven is off? But they tasted fine in the end.

  34. User avatar dana.brown55 says:

  35. 4 stars
I used dried rosemary instead, still yum! But fresh would have been nice too.

Onions should never be baked! Just grill them! ⭐

Gonna pass on this one. Baked onions don’t sound appealing to me at all.

    1. User avatar Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule says:

      4 stars
I can see how baked onions might sound weird. But they taste so good once cooked! Give it a try, you might be surprised!

  39. 1 star
These onions tasted weird. I don’t get why people like them so much. 1 star!

  40. User avatar karena.okon1988 says:

    3 stars
I tried it but found it a bit too creamy for my taste. Might reduce the cream next time.
