Onions Baked with Rosemary and Cream

November 21, 2024

Onions baked with rosemary and cream is a luxurious yet simple side dish that transforms humble onions into something rich, savory, and deeply flavorful. Slow-baked until tender and caramelized, the onions develop a natural sweetness that pairs beautifully with the earthy aroma of rosemary and the indulgent richness of cream.

This dish starts with sweet or yellow onions, peeled and halved or thickly sliced. As they bake, the onions soften, mellowing in flavor and taking on a buttery texture. The addition of fresh rosemary infuses the dish with a fragrant, herbaceous note that perfectly complements the sweetness of the onions.

Heavy cream is poured over the onions before baking, creating a luscious sauce that thickens as it cooks. The cream absorbs the flavor of the onions and rosemary, turning golden and slightly bubbly around the edges. Some variations add a sprinkle of Parmesan or Gruyère on top for an extra layer of savory richness and a beautifully browned, crisp finish.

Onions baked with rosemary and cream is a versatile side dish that fits seamlessly into both holiday feasts and everyday meals. It pairs especially well with roasted meats like turkey, chicken, pork, or beef, offering a creamy contrast to crispy, roasted textures. It also complements vegetarian mains, lending depth and richness to the plate.

Despite its simplicity, this dish feels elegant and comforting — the kind of side that guests rave about and request again. It brings warmth and rustic charm to the table, with the bonus of filling the kitchen with the inviting aroma of rosemary and caramelizing onions.

For drinks, it pairs wonderfully with white wines like Chardonnay or Viognier, a dry cider, or even a crisp sparkling water with lemon.

Onions baked with rosemary and cream is proof that with just a few simple ingredients, you can create a side dish that feels both indulgent and timeless.

I dunno, I followed the recipe but my onions turned out all mushy. Maybe I left them in too long? Not sure if I’d try it again.

    1. 4 stars
Mushy onions can happen if they bake too long or at too high a temp. Maybe try checking them earlier next time!

  2. 3 stars
Why cover with foil? I never understand that part. I usually cover my food with a lid instead. Just an idea, heading off to the store to grab onions!

  3. 2 stars
Why would you put cream on onions?? Seems like a waste of good onions to me.

Onions? Really? I thought this was gonna be a stew or something! But I can’t believe how good these taste! I might even bake my socks now just to try more flavors! 😂

This recipe is just amazing! The flavor of the rosemary with the creamy onions is like heaven. I made it for a dinner party and everyone loved it! 😍

Is 350°F really enough? I bake at like 400°F. Seems like it’d take forever to cook.

      5 stars
I’ve always baked onions at 350°F and they come out great! It’s not about the temperature, but the time. Just give it a shot! 😊

    2. 3 stars
I dunno man, 350°F seems kinda low. What if they just turn mushy? I prefer higher temps for better browning.

Sounds good, but I’m not sure about the cream. I feel like it might be too rich. Anyone tried it without??
