Gnocchi with Spinach and Chicken

December 30, 2024

Gnocchi with spinach and chicken is a comforting, well-balanced dish that combines soft, pillowy gnocchi with tender chicken, fresh spinach, and a creamy sauce. The mild flavor of gnocchi, paired with the savory chicken and earthy spinach, creates a satisfying and hearty meal that’s perfect for a cozy dinner. The creamy sauce ties all the ingredients together, making each bite rich and flavorful.

To begin, boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs are seasoned with salt, pepper, and garlic powder, then cooked until golden brown and juicy. Once cooked, the chicken is sliced into strips or cubes and set aside. The gnocchi, which can be either homemade or store-bought, is boiled in salted water until it floats to the surface, signaling that it’s cooked to perfection. The gnocchi’s soft, delicate texture serves as the ideal base for this dish.

In the same pan used to cook the chicken, a bit of olive oil or butter is added, and fresh spinach is sautéed until wilted. The spinach adds a burst of freshness and vibrant color to the dish. Garlic is then sautéed in the pan to enhance the overall flavor before adding heavy cream to create a smooth, velvety sauce. Grated Parmesan cheese is stirred in to thicken the sauce, adding richness and depth. The sauce is seasoned with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg, giving it an extra layer of warmth.

Once the sauce is ready, the cooked gnocchi, chicken, and spinach are added to the pan, and everything is gently tossed together to ensure the gnocchi is coated in the creamy sauce. The result is a beautifully balanced dish that combines the delicate, pillowy gnocchi with the tender chicken, fresh spinach, and a rich, cheesy sauce.

Gnocchi with spinach and chicken can be served as a standalone meal or accompanied by a simple side salad or crusty bread. The creamy sauce and hearty ingredients make this dish a satisfying choice for any occasion, whether it’s a weeknight dinner or a special gathering. It’s a comforting, flavorful meal that brings together simple ingredients in a deliciously indulgent way.

Eh, it was okay. The chicken took too long to cook and the spinach was kinda bland. Not sure I’d make it again.

My wife cooked this for dinner—she nailed it. I was impressed, but it seems like too many ingredients for such a simple dish.

Why would you put spinach in it?? Totally ruins the dish! Just stick to chicken and cream.

Idk why but my gnocchi kind of broke apart when I stirred a lot. Flavor was good, texture was meh. Lesson learned: be gentle.

I burnt the garlic, other than that, I think I did ok. Still edible lol.

5 stars!! Took me back to Italy! The texture was perfect, and it tasted so fresh!

Meh… pretty bland. Needed more flavor. I added some italian seasoning.

Delicious!!! The garlic gives it a kick! I will try adding other veggies next time.

    1. 5 stars
I love adding veggies too! Maybe try bell peppers or mushrooms next time, they go great with it.

No way is 2 minutes of simmer enough for heavy cream?? Mine separated a bit… maybe my heat was too high. I tried whisking in the cheese off-heat and it improved. If you follow it, it should be fine.

Why do you need cream? Can’t you just use water? Sounds wasteful.

Sounds good, but isn’t gnocchi just potato? I thought it wouldn’t be so creamy with just chicken and spinach. Got any tips?

Wait, can I use another type of cheese? I don’t have Parmesan and the store was out of it.

I don’t know about using heavy cream…it seems too rich. Could I use milk instead?

  25. 2 stars
I dunno… Something felt off, maybe too much garlic? 🤷‍♂️

  26. 2 stars
You need to season the chicken more! Mine was bland. 😕

  27. User avatar myriam.kohler5 says:

I struggled with the cooking time. Gnocchi took longer than 5 mins for me.

Yummmm! The garlic makes all the difference. I added some mushrooms as well, turned out great!

It was okay, but why do you need so much cream? Seemed a bit heavy. Maybe use half?

  31. User avatar wellRespected says:

This recipe is a game changer! I never knew gnocchi could taste this good.

    1. 5 stars
I agree! This recipe really brings out the flavors. Gnocchi is my favorite now!

  32. User avatar lyndon.abshire says:

Made this tonight and it turned out super creamy. The spinach wilted perfectly and the garlic flavor really comes through. I used homemade gnocchi and it felt restaurant-level.

    1. User avatar richard.kunze54 says:

      5 stars
Omg yes—cream + garlic + gnocchi is such a combo. Glad the spinach wilted just right! Homemade gnocchi usually makes it taste way more “restaurant.” Did you do it in the same skillet right away or hold the sauce separately?

  33. 4 stars
Pretty good, but I think the chicken could use a little more seasoning (salt/pepper before browning). The sauce was a bit thick for me, so next time I’ll add a splash of milk or pasta water.

  34. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

    4 stars
Delicious! But I used frozen spinach and I think it messed with the texture.

  35. 2 stars
Meh. The gnocchi was too mushy for my liking. Not a fan.

  36. User avatar Reg Nullify says:

    Delish! 👌

  37. User avatar Treasa Shields says:

Really easy recipe, but a little too rich for my taste. Maybe less cream next time.

    1. User avatar Shirleen Schimmel says:

      4 stars
I totally get what you mean! The cream can definitely be over the top. I like to add some more veggies instead, makes it lighter! 😊

  38. 4 stars
Pretty good, but I think the heavy cream needs a bit more simmer time to thicken. Mine was a little thin even after adding Parmesan. Still tasty though!

  39. User avatar edmundo.hammes1959 says:

    4 stars
Tasty, but I think it needs a bit more seasoning. I added extra pepper and a pinch of red pepper flakes and it totally leveled up.

  40. User avatar christopher.maggio says:

Wasn’t sure about the spinach in this dish, but it actually works! Colorful and tasty.

    1. User avatar amal.west69 says:

      2 stars
I dunno, spinach sounds gross in a pasta dish. I’d just stick to chicken and gnocchi.

    2. 5 stars
I’m glad you liked it! Spinach does add a nice touch, doesn’t it?
