Homemade Ketchup

June 11, 2025

Ketchup is one of the world’s most beloved condiments, but have you ever tried making it at home? Homemade ketchup is a simple, flavorful alternative to store-bought versions, with the added bonus of being free from preservatives, artificial sweeteners, and excessive sugar. It’s a great way to control the ingredients and create a version that suits your taste perfectly.

The base of homemade ketchup typically starts with tomato paste or canned crushed tomatoes. From there, you build flavor using a mix of vinegar, sweetener, and spices. Classic additions include onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, and a pinch of cloves or allspice for depth. Apple cider vinegar adds tanginess, while maple syrup, agave, or brown sugar bring a touch of sweetness to balance the acidity.

Making ketchup at home is easier than you might think. All it takes is simmering the ingredients in a saucepan for about 20–30 minutes until thickened. Once cooled, the ketchup can be stored in a jar in the refrigerator for up to two weeks, or even longer if properly sterilized and sealed.

One of the best parts of homemade ketchup is the ability to adjust it to your liking. Want it spicier? Add a dash of cayenne or chili flakes. Prefer it sweeter or less salty? Just tweak the ingredients. You can even make a smoky version by adding a hint of smoked paprika or chipotle.

Homemade ketchup is not only perfect for dipping fries or topping burgers, but it can also be used in marinades, salad dressings, and sauces. It’s especially great for families looking to reduce sugar intake or avoid unnecessary additives.

Once you try homemade ketchup, it’s hard to go back. With just a few pantry staples, you can create a fresh, rich, and customizable condiment that elevates everything it touches. Whether you’re meal-prepping for the week or crafting a gourmet burger night, this ketchup adds a homemade touch that’s both delicious and wholesome. And it’s perfect with keto pizza.

Mine turned out thicker than expected—probably I didn’t stir enough at the end. Still edible though, and the flavor is rich. Next time I’ll watch it closer.

Was pleasantly surprised by how easy this was! The flavor is so much fresher. I used honey instead of brown sugar. Yum! 😋

    1. User avatar tari.hintz1969 says:

      5 stars
Right?! I tried it once and now I’m done with the bottled stuff. The cinnamon/clove combo is a total plot twist—in a good way.

  22. User avatar wynona.morissette says:

    3 stars
I don’t know… mine tastes kind of flat? I’m wondering if 20 minutes wasn’t enough or if I should add a pinch of pepper. The ketchup did thicken but flavor needed a boost.

  23. User avatar charline.renner87 says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but I think it needs more onion/garlic for my taste. Also 1/8 tsp clove feels like a lot if your clove is strong—mine was a little too “spiced.”

    1. User avatar senaida.schmeler87 says:

      3 stars
Huh, I kinda liked the clove amount 😅 I used pre-ground clove and it barely tasted “spiced.” Maybe your clove was super strong or older.

    2. User avatar kimber.schimmel says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—next time I’m adding more onion/garlic too. I actually doubled the garlic powder and it was way better with fries.

  24. User avatar rene.gibson96 says:

    2 stars
I don’t understand why people even want to make ketchup. Store ketchup is just fine. This seems like a lot of work for something you can buy! 🤷‍♂️

  25. 2 stars
Very thin!!! Like soup not ketchup. What went wrong? Recipe needs more tomato paste!

    1. User avatar garry.cartwright83 says:

      4 stars
I had the same issue! It was way too runny for me too. Gonna try adding more tomato paste next time. Thanks for sharing your experience!

    2. User avatar Dremora Lord says:

      3 stars
Maybe you didn’t simmer it long enough? The thickening might take a bit, but I find it turns out well! Just needs patience.

This ketchup tastes amazing! Way better than store-bought!

Ketchup fixings? I thought it was all tomatoes. What’s with the other stuff?

    1. User avatar Barbie Lynch says:

      4 stars
I know, right? It’s crazy how much stuff goes into ketchup! I guess the spices give it that extra kick.

    2. User avatar ian.bechtelar says:

      2 stars
Lol it’s just tomatoes n sugar! Why add the fancy stuff?

  28. User avatar darlena.auer2009 says:

    5 stars
Tried this recipe and it was super easy! Much better than store-bought ketchup. Yum!

  29. User avatar tatum.kozey54 says:

    2 stars
The flavor is okay but it never got as thick as I wanted. I simmered the whole time and still it’s kinda runny—any ideas?

  30. 3 stars
I don’t know about this… Ketchup needs preservatives, doesn’t it? This seems too simple.

  31. User avatar erick.jacobs says:

    2 stars
I followed it but it never really thickened. I’m not sure if my tomato paste was old or if I needed longer than 25 min.

    1. User avatar lamar.crooks99 says:

      4 stars
That’s frustrating! Homemade ketchup can look “thin” at first—did it really bubble/simmer the whole 20–25 minutes? If the heat was too low or the pot was covered, it may not reduce enough to thicken.

  32. User avatar miles.hilpert2022 says:

    5 stars
This ketchup is amazing! Way better than store-bought. I added some chili powder for a kick, and now it’s perfect! 🌶️

    1. User avatar sherilyn.morar says:

      2 stars
I dunno, I think store-bought is easier. Plus, isn’t ketchup supposed to be sweet? The chili powder sounds weird to me.

    2. User avatar Arwen Evenstar says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! This ketchup is the best! I’ve never bought store-bought since I found this recipe. Adding chili powder is a great idea! 🌶️

I love that it’s homemade! I’m trying to eat less preservatives. This is great.

Not as good as Heinz, sorry not sorry!

  36. User avatar Cave Bear says:

    4 stars
Honestly, I didn’t think it would taste this good! My kids loved it. Will definitely make again!

  37. 4 stars
I love making condiments, so this was fun. But I wish it had more tang—maybe I’ll use less water next time. Still totally usable.

    1. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

      4 stars
Totally get that—ketchup can come out a bit mellow if there’s more water than the vinegar/sugar balance you like. Next time try reducing the water a few tablespoons or increase vinegar slightly. Glad it was still usable though!

    2. User avatar mel.von1985 says:

      2 stars
More tang = more vinegar? I’d just throw in lemon juice too 😂 Or maybe use ketchup paste instead of tomato paste? Idk, mine always comes out too tangy if I mess with it.

  38. User avatar Hilario Tromp says:

    4 stars
My kids loved it! Thanks for sharing!

    1. User avatar Supreme Kai says:

  39. User avatar desmond.douglas46 says:

    5 stars
Tried this today and it actually tastes like ketchup! The vinegar + cinnamon combo surprised me (in a good way). Mine thickened a bit faster than 20 minutes—still perfect on fries.

    1. User avatar kathryn.keebler says:

      3 stars
Ketchup-like but… mine tasted a little too sharp, like straight vinegar. Next time I’ll use less vinegar or more sugar. Also I think I may have simmered too high heat 😂

    2. User avatar Frost Atronach says:

      5 stars
Yes!! I had the same “wait… cinnamon?” reaction. Glad it turns out ketchup-y. I simmer closer to 30 min and it gets super thick—fries heaven.

  40. User avatar Lunkwill and Fook says:

    5 stars
My kids loved it! I used honey instead of brown sugar and it was sweet as candy! 🥳

  41. User avatar alvaro.paucek13 says:

    2. User avatar ivory.hodkiewicz45 says:

      2 stars
Best ketchup? Really? I make mine from just tomatoes and a pinch of salt. This sounds weird. Why all those spices?

  42. User avatar merna.wolff1962 says:

    5 stars
This is way better than store bought for the ingredient list. Family loved it, even the picky one. Will make again!

  43. 5 stars
Yay! Finally ketchup that doesn’t taste like chemicals! Awin!

    1. User avatar lucio.herzog says:

      5 stars
Totally agree! This ketchup tastes so fresh and not like the store stuff!

  44. User avatar stanton.wehner47 says:

    3 stars
Hmm… I followed it exactly and it’s bitter? Maybe my clove was old. Also, I thought cinnamon was optional but you know… I used it anyway. Could be me.

    1. 5 stars
That sounds frustrating. Old cloves can definitely go bitter/harsh—like, clove flavor can get “soapy” if it’s past its prime. Next time, try reducing the clove to a pinch and use fresh ground spice. Also letting it cool fully helps it mellow.

    2. 3 stars
I think you’re right about it being you a bit 😅 But bitter ketchup usually means too much spice or not simmering long enough to cook the flavors. Your batch had 1/8 tsp clove + cinnamon—fine, but if your clove was strong or chunky it could overpower. Maybe use less clove next time or add a touch more sugar/salt balance.

  45. User avatar garth.lakin12 says:

    4 stars
I like that it’s simple and doesn’t require a bunch of weird ingredients. Mine was a little thin at first, but it thickened after cooling.

    1. User avatar marguerita.schulist says:

      3 stars
I tried it but mine was still kinda thin even after cooling 🤷‍♂️ maybe my stove runs low or I didn’t simmer long enough. Still tasty though—like a sweet tomato sauce. Would reducing the water help?

    2. User avatar ethan.klein says:

      5 stars
Yes! That cooling step is everything—mine always looks thinner right off the stove too, then it turns into proper ketchup after chilling. Great simple ingredient list.

  46. User avatar roy.ullrich69 says:

    2 stars
I’m skeptical that tomato paste + that little water makes ketchup. Mine was still more like thin tomato glaze even after 30 minutes. Any tips for getting it ketchup-y?

  47. User avatar ken.quigley74 says:

    1 star
Homemade ketchup? More like homemade yuck! I don’t know how people eat this stuff. Never again. 😒

  48. User avatar lyman.jakubowski says:

    2 stars
Homemade ketchup? No way! Who even needs that when you got Heinz? 🤷‍♀️

  49. 2 stars
Too sweet for my taste. I think I’ll cut down on the sugar next time.

  50. User avatar kermit.lockman48 says:

    5 stars
This recipe is cool! I made it for my kids and they love it! Just like the stuff from the bottle but less sugar and better taste. 👍

  51. User avatar Ms. Sherrie Bruen says:

    1 star
    Ketchup?? More like ketch-NO. 🤢

  52. User avatar sylvester.heathcote1981 says:

    5 stars
Wow! My kids actually asked for more on fries. I was ready to hate it but it’s legit.

  53. User avatar darrell.ernser42 says:

    2 stars
My jar looked thick right away but after refrigeration it stayed runny. I simmered the full time too, so maybe my tomato paste was thinner than usual. Any tips?

    1. User avatar branden.stroman1966 says:

      4 stars
That actually makes sense—tomato paste thickness varies a lot by brand. If yours was thinner to begin with, the ketchup may never “set” as much even after simmering. Next time, try cooking it a bit longer (5–10 minutes) uncovered to reduce more, or let it cool fully before judging—ketchup thickens a lot when cold.

  54. User avatar Hotblack Desiato says:

    3 stars
Easy to make, but my husband thought it was too tangy. Maybe I put too much vinegar? 🤔

  55. User avatar lissa.bartell31 says:

    2 stars
Not as good as I thought it would be. I don’t think the cinnamon really belongs in ketchup…

  56. User avatar awilda.rowe says:

    3 stars
Ketchup is supposed to be red and sweet… this was more like spiced tomato sauce 😅 still edible though.

    1. User avatar alec.reynolds says:

      4 stars
Totally get what you mean 😄 I usually find it’s more “tomato-y” if I don’t simmer it long enough. Did yours thicken up properly? A bit more simmer time might bring it closer to classic ketchup.

    2. User avatar wendi.hermann says:

      3 stars
Wait ketchup is supposed to be red sweet? Mine looks brownish too—maybe because of the tomato paste? I think spiced tomato sauce is basically the same thing, just call it ketchup and you’re fine 😅

  57. User avatar loren.herzog says:

    2 stars
2 stars bc it came out too thick and burnt on the bottom after 20 min… I was stirring but ig my heat was too high. Grammar check: none—just sadness.

  58. 1 star
Canned tomato paste? What kind of chef uses that? Real tomatoes only!

  59. User avatar jefferey.bradtke says:

    3 stars
I made this and let it simmer for like an hour. Should I have cooked it less?

  60. 3 stars
Not bad! But my sauce never got super thick… I probably didn’t stir enough, or I let it simmer too short. Tasted fine though, so I just reduced it a bit longer next time.

  61. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

    4 stars
Really good basic ketchup vibe. Next time I’ll add a tiny pinch of smoked paprika for depth, but this is solid.

  62. User avatar pete.armstrong says:

    2 stars
Followed it exactly and it still tastes flat. Maybe my tomato paste can was watery? Idk, it needed more salt or sugar for me.

  63. 5 stars
I was skeptical about tomato paste ketchup, but wow. I used white vinegar and honey and it came out tangy-sweet. Definitely going to make again.

  64. 4 stars
Easy recipe and the steps are straightforward. I love that it uses pantry stuff. I’ll add a tiny pinch of smoked paprika for fun next batch.

    1. User avatar nakesha.oconner72 says:

      5 stars
Love this! The spice tweaks sound great—smoked paprika could really give it that “grilled” ketchup vibe. I’ll try a pinch too.

  65. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    5 stars
Wait, where’s the recipe for fries to go with this?? 😂

    1. 3 stars

Lol, totally! Got any good fry recipes to share? 😂

  66. User avatar Janetta Littel says:

  67. User avatar rich.landlord says:

Easy recipe, quick steps, and it actually lasts in the fridge. I doubled the batch and it got thicker as it cooled—nice bonus.

  68. User avatar cesar.rosenbaum12 says:

    3 stars
Ingredients sound a bit weird, I mean cinnamon? Is that normal in ketchup? 🤨

  69. User avatar jefferson.braun says:

    3 stars
I tried this, but it was too thick for my liking. Maybe less tomato paste next time? 🤔

  70. 4 stars
Followed it pretty much exactly—used apple cider vinegar and brown sugar. Turned out great, but I might reduce the onion/garlic powder a hair next time (still tasty though).

  71. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about using tomato paste instead of simmering tomatoes, but it worked. I did have to stir more since it got thick on the bottom.

  72. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    3 stars
I don’t know… Sounds kinda weird with vinegar and sugar together. Still gonna try tho.

  73. User avatar winford.witting8 says:

Wow! Never gonna buy ketchup again. This is gonna be my go-to.

    1. User avatar Michaela O'Hara says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome! Making ketchup at home sounds fun. Can’t wait to try it!

  74. 5 stars
This is way better than the store-bought stuff. The clove/cinnamon combo gives it that “ketchup” depth. I simmered 25 mins and it was nicely thick.

    1. User avatar doug.johns says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—store-bought just tastes kinda flat to me. The cinnamon + clove really does that deep “ketchup” thing. I’m gonna try simmering a bit longer next time, 25 mins sounds perfect.

  75. User avatar robyn.kohler84 says:

    3 stars
Why no ketchup spices like paprika? It feels more like a sweet tomato sauce to me. I guess it’s homemade though.

    1. User avatar martine.schoen says:

      3 stars
Yeah it’s more like tomato sauce to me too. I might add paprika next time, and maybe a pinch of chili powder. Homemade is still better than store ketchup, tho.

    2. User avatar steve_maga says:

      5 stars
I think the vinegar + sweeteners already give it that “ketchup” vibe. The cinnamon and clove are kind of the spice-y backbone here—paprika would change the flavor more into a different direction.

  76. User avatar shannan.stracke says:

    4 stars
Used garlic salt instead of powder and it turned out fine. Just sayin’!

Mine came out a bit too tangy. I think my vinegar was stronger (white vinegar). Still edible though, just need more sugar or a longer simmer.

I followed the recipe but mine came out a little too tangy. Next time I’ll add a touch more brown sugar. Otherwise good flavor.

It’s okay. Not what I expected. A bit too sweet for my taste.

  84. 5 stars
Wow, easy. Ketchup on fries was bussin

  85. User avatar prince.friesen says:

I think 1 can of tomato paste is missing something? Like 6 ounces sounds too little for ketchup. Mine was more like thick tomato sauce than ketchup.

  86. 3 stars
Mine was a little too sweet at first. I think my “heaping” brown sugar was the culprit. Next batch I’ll go a bit lighter—otherwise texture was right on.

  87. 4 stars
Pretty solid, but mine came out too tangy even with honey. Next time I’ll use less vinegar or simmer uncovered to reduce more.

I used white vinegar and accidentally swapped the cinnamon and clove measurements (I think). It tastes kinda weird, not horrible, just… off. Would try again carefully.

      5 stars
Oh no—yeah swapping cinnamon and clove would totally throw it off. Clove is way punchier, so I can see why it tastes “off” but not bad. Thanks for the heads up!

lol I did something similar with mustard powder once and it tasted like… medicine? 😅 But at least you’re brave enough to try again. Next time just measure tiny spices super carefully—clove goes in last for me.

DELISH!! 😍 I used honey instead of brown sugar and it was fab!

This is ketchup-adjacent, not exactly ketchup. Like, good homemade condiment but I can tell it’s tomato paste-based. Still beats store-bought for me!

    1. User avatar Suzanna Lang says:

      4 stars
Weirdly enough i thought it was more like BBQ sauce? But i mean… still good. Next time im gonna add a little extra tomato paste cuz mine came out kinda thin lol.

    2. 5 stars
Totally agree—homemade ketchup is usually tomato-paste-forward, so it makes sense you can taste that. Store-bought never hits the same. 😊

Super easy. I let it cool longer than the recipe and it thickened even more in the fridge. Kids didn’t complain, so that’s a win.

Made this last night—so easy. The cinnamon/clove combo surprised me, but it tastes way more “real ketchup” than I expected. Thickened nicely after the 20-25 min.

  93. User avatar basementDweller says:

Good but I had to adjust the vinegar—used white vinegar and it was kinda sharp. Once I reduced vinegar a bit next batch, it was way nicer.

  94. 4 stars
One question: does it really last 3 weeks? I only did 10 days before I ate it all lol. Flavor was good, though!

  95. User avatar raymundo.wilderman says:

This tastes way better than store-bought! The cinnamon/clove combo is subtle but really rounds it out. I used honey and it came out perfect.

  96. 2 stars
Flavor is kinda flat for me. Also who measures 1/8 teaspoon? I don’t have that small of a spoon lol. I’ll probably add more garlic/onion next time.

    1. 4 stars
Totally get it—mine felt muted the first time too. I usually bump up the cinnamon/clove a bit and add a pinch of smoked paprika to make it pop.

Made this last night and it actually tastes like ketchup. I simmered a bit longer until it was thicker, and it came out great on fries!

I love that it’s just a few pantry ingredients. Also, it makes my fries disappear… like instantly 😅

  99. User avatar liane.walker3 says:

Pretty good, but I think I’d cut the cinnamon/clove a hair. I could taste them more than I expected, like it veered slightly toward spiced sauce instead of classic ketchup.

Not sure about the cinnamon/clove combo… it made it taste kinda “holiday-y” to me, like mulled stuff. Could be just my palate.

    1. User avatar cristen.hermiston1 says:

      5 stars
Totally get what you mean—cinnamon and clove can read more “mulled/spiced” than ketchup to some palates. If you want it more classic, try skipping the clove or cutting both down (like 1/16 tsp each) and simmer a bit longer for sweetness to mellow.

  101. 5 stars
Turned out way better than I expected—tangy and sweet in a good balance. I simmered it the full 25 and it thickened nicely.

  102. User avatar wes.aufderhar says:

So good! Way better than bottled ketchup. Kids even asked for seconds 😅

    1. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

      5 stars
Yes!! That “seconds” line is the best endorsement 😄 I love how the spices mellow it out—so much fresher than bottled stuff.

We tried it but mine didn’t get that thick, more like pizza sauce. I simmered maybe 10 minutes—maybe I messed up? Still tasted good though!

  103. User avatar basementDweller says:

    2 stars
I kinda messed up and used double garlic powder… still tasted weirdly fine? Idk, 10/10 for chaos.

  104. 3 stars
Not gonna lie, the cloves smell kinda intense while it simmers. Once cooled it’s better, but I think 1/8 tsp is still too much for me.

    1. User avatar carlotta.larson says:

      5 stars
Totally fair—clove can be *strong*. If you’re sensitive to it, try cutting it to a pinch (like 1/16 tsp) next time, or even skip it and add a little extra cinnamon/onion powder to balance.

  105. 5 stars
Made this today and it tastes way more “real” than store ketchup. The simmer time helps a lot—mine thickened after about 22 minutes. I used honey instead of brown sugar and it came out great.

  106. User avatar wellRespected says:

This is good but it’s not ketchup ketchup. More like a spiced tomato sauce. Still tasty on fries though—my kid ate it right away.

  107. User avatar tracey.lakin1957 says:

I’m skeptical about the cinnamon and clove in ketchup… but I tried it anyway and it kinda works? Could just be my brain accepting weird flavors.

    1. User avatar jacquline.heaney51 says:

      3 stars
I did this but used a little too much clove… tasted like christmas cough drops 😅 Still, the idea is cool. Next time I’ll stick closer to 1/8 tsp. Ketchup should not be too spicy!

    2. 5 stars
Honestly I don’t doubt it—cinnamon and clove are super common in warm, spiced sauces. If it “kinda works,” that’s probably the sugar + vinegar balancing the spices.

  108. User avatar dino.effertz says:

I followed it pretty much exactly and it thickened nicely after 25 min. I used honey and it’s slightly sweeter in a good way.

  109. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

Not bad at all, but mine was still a little thin after 20 minutes. I ended up simmering closer to 35 and then it finally thickened. Still worth it though.

Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about the clove + cinnamon combo, but it’s actually balanced. Next time I might add a tiny pinch of smoked paprika.
