Egg in a Hole with Bacon

August 27, 2025

Egg in a Hole with Bacon is one of those timeless breakfast dishes that feels both playful and comforting. It is a meal that takes something as simple as bread, eggs, and bacon and turns it into a plate full of character. The golden egg resting neatly in the center of toasted bread has a nostalgic charm, often reminding people of lazy weekend mornings or the first time they learned to cook something special. Pairing it with crispy bacon elevates it to a hearty and satisfying breakfast that can easily carry you through a busy day.

What makes Egg in a Hole so appealing is its simplicity. It is not overly fancy, yet it manages to feel like a treat. The combination of warm, buttered bread, a perfectly cooked egg, and salty bacon is hard to beat. This dish is also incredibly versatile. It can be dressed up with fresh herbs, avocado slices, or even a sprinkle of cheese, or it can be enjoyed in its most basic form for a quick and filling bite. Its playful presentation also makes it a favorite for families, especially kids who love seeing the egg peek through the bread.

Beyond its taste, Egg in a Hole with Bacon fits beautifully into modern breakfast trends. People love dishes that are both Instagram-worthy and approachable, and this one checks all the boxes. It is easy to imagine it being served at a rustic café, paired with a latte or a freshly squeezed juice, yet it is just as enjoyable when made at home.

The addition of bacon adds depth and crunch, balancing the softness of the egg and bread. The smoky, savory flavor of bacon makes this dish feel indulgent, perfect for a weekend brunch or a cozy breakfast in bed. Despite its simple ingredients, Egg in a Hole with Bacon delivers comfort and satisfaction in every bite. It is a dish that invites creativity but does not require it to be delicious. That is the beauty of classics like this: they prove that sometimes the simplest meals are the most memorable, offering both flavor and nostalgia on a single plate.

Egg in a hole? I thought it was just egg and toast? Strange concept!

  3. User avatar Falmer Spellsword says:

Too much butter for my liking! Next time I’ll use less. The egg was okay, tho.

    1. User avatar craig.steuber says:

I totally get you! Butter can be overwhelming. Have you tried olive oil instead? It might taste better!

  4. User avatar huey.wisozk2015 says:

    4 stars
Quite easy but i would prefer using cheese instead of bacon! Who needs bacon lol?

  5. User avatar joe.ernser29 says:

Fantastic! Loved every bite, especially with crispy bacon. Will make again!

But isn’t this a bit too greasy? eggs with bacon always make me feel heavy.

  7. 2 stars
Tried this but the bread burnt, maybe my skillet was too hot? Not sure if I’ll try again.

  8. User avatar joe_banana says:

    4 stars
So simple yet so delicious! My kids enjoyed it too, and that’s saying a lot.

  9. User avatar felipe.lockman says:

I always forget to cut the hole first and then I end up wrestling the bread like it’s alive 😅 Still tasty though. The egg set nicely and the butter flavor is key.

    1. User avatar orval.kassulke2000 says:

      5 stars
Haha yes! The “wrestling the bread” part is so real 😅 Cutting the hole first is definitely the move—otherwise that egg wants to escape. Glad the egg sets and the butter flavor comes through though!

  10. User avatar wiley.murphy68 says:

    2 stars
I’m not sure about this one. I mean, it’s just egg and bread with bacon, right? Seems a bit basic.

  11. User avatar antonette.heaney91 says:

    3 stars
This was okay, but the egg took longer to cook than I expected. Might try using a lid next time.

  12. User avatar donovan.simonis48 says:

    5 stars
Yum!!wanna try with some avacado next time. Good stuff!!

    1. 5 stars
That sounds like a great idea! Avocado would add some creaminess for sure. Can’t wait to try it like that! 😊

    2. User avatar farah.hodkiewicz1965 says:

      2 stars
I don’t know about that. Avocado with bacon and egg? Seems weird to me. But hey, you do you.

  13. 5 stars
Absolutely love this recipe! Simple, quick, and so tasty. The bacon makes it 10x better!

  14. User avatar dorris.labadie32 says:

    1 star
Way too much butter. I know it says 1 tbsp but I felt like it was swimming. Also, my yolk cooked way too hard—medium heat lied to me lol.

  15. User avatar Tyrone Shoes says:

    5 stars
My kids love it! Made it for breakfast and they ate it all. Thanks for the recipe!

    1. 5 stars
That’s awesome! Kids really know how to enjoy food. I’ll have to try this recipe for my little ones too!

    2. 3 stars
I dunno, sounds kinda simple. I prefer more fancy breakfasts. But I’m glad your kids liked it!

  16. User avatar portia.spinka47 says:

    3 stars
The instructions are super simple, which I like, but I wish it said how long to cook the egg—medium heat can be weird.

  17. User avatar gus.leffler says:

    3 stars
I had trouble with the cooking time. My yolk was too runny. Next time I’ll cook it longer.

  18. 1 star
Can you really call this a recipe? It’s just frying an egg in bread. LOL

  19. User avatar chauncey.glover67 says:

    5 stars
This is such a classic comfort breakfast. The bread toasts up perfectly and the egg cooks right in the middle—no mess. Bacon on the side is a must.

  20. User avatar otis.bernhard75 says:

    5 stars
This is so simple and delicious! I added some cheese and it was perfect! 5 stars!

  21. 4 stars
Egg in a hole? Sounds fancy but I just call it toast with egg lol. It’s good tho!

  22. User avatar jeffry.nicolas79 says:

    2 stars
Not gonna lie, I messed up the hole. It crumbled, and the egg leaked out. Maybe I pressed the glass wrong? Will try again.

  23. User avatar Margot Fenring says:

    3 stars
Whole grain bread tastes a little too hearty for me with the egg, but white bread makes it perfect. Also, more pepper than “to taste” maybe.

  24. User avatar Oolon Colluphid says:

    1 star
Egg in a hole? More like egg on the floor! 🤦‍♂️ I made a mess.

  25. User avatar Emily Saunders says:

    1 star
idk about this… egg in a hole sounds like it might be a joke or smth. I’ll stick to my pancakes.

    1. User avatar luciano.osinski says:

      5 stars
Give it a try! It’s way better than pancakes trust me. Just eggy goodness! 🍳

  26. User avatar lyman.schuppe91 says:

    5 stars
I love breakfast food like this. The butter flavor + bacon is unbeatable. 10/10 would eat again!

  27. User avatar guillermo.schowalter says:

    2 stars
Nice recipe. But do people really eat bread with eggs? I thought we just had eggs alone. 🤔

  28. User avatar kristin.altenwerth89 says:

    5 stars
My kid loved this. We used a biscuit cutter and it was so fun to do. Also, bacon being optional? Don’t be silly—add it!

  29. 2 stars
Not my favorite. I found the center bread a bit chewy and the egg got kind of overcooked. Maybe my hole was too small? Also bacon takes over the whole vibe for me.

  30. User avatar Margot Fenring says:

    2 stars
Why would anyone eat bread with a hole in it? Seems wasteful.

  31. 4 stars
A great way to start the day! But can someone tell me why it’s called “Egg in a Hole”? Seems weird.

  32. User avatar duane.hirthe50 says:

    3 stars
I don’t get the hype. My bread hole shrank and the egg leaked out a bit. Tasted good but looked messy.

  33. 2 stars
Not a fan… The egg stuck to my bread and it was a mess. 🤦‍♂️

  34. User avatar brooks.willms says:

    5 stars
Cool idea. Bacon + egg is never bad.

    1. User avatar Draugr Thrall says:

      5 stars
Right?! Bacon + egg is basically a cheat code for breakfast. 🍳🥓

    2. 4 stars
Sounds good but I always mess up the egg part lol. How do you keep it from leaking out the hole?

  35. User avatar Dwarven Centurion says:

    3 stars
I tried it without pepper and it was kinda bland. Also salt “to taste” is vague—like how much is ‘taste’ 😅

  36. User avatar rosalie.thiel says:

    5 stars
Egg in a hole? What a funny name. 😂 Brings back childhood memories!

  37. User avatar jacob.kutch22 says:

    5 stars
Very tasty! I added some cheese to the egg for extra flavor, turned out amazing!

    1. 5 stars
Cheese sounds like a great idea! I never thought of that, gonna try it next time!

    2. 3 stars
Egg in a hole? Seems simple but tastes good, I guess. But what if the egg runs everywhere?

  38. 4 stars
I didn’t have bacon, so I used ham. Still tasty!

    1. 5 stars
Glad to hear it turned out tasty! Ham is a great substitute when you’re out of bacon.

  39. User avatar esther.jones45 says:

    3 stars
I love the idea, but 1 tbsp butter feels like not enough for two sides. I ended up adding more and it was way better.

  40. User avatar Claudia Jerde says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I always mess up the hole size and the egg leaks out a bit 😅. Still tasty though—breakfast win.

  41. User avatar andrew.fritsch says:

    1 star
Why is the egg in the hole? Is something supposed to come out? 🤔

  42. User avatar guillermo.corwin4 says:

    4 stars
Really simple and delicious. A classic recipe that never fails. Used sourdough instead of whole grain, still great!

  43. User avatar elvin.aufderhar72 says:

    1 star
You don’t need that butter, just use more bacon grease! Works better.

  44. 5 stars
This was so cozy. The bread edges got perfectly golden, and the bacon on the side was a great touch. I used pepper in the egg and it really popped—would absolutely make again.

  45. 5 stars
This is such a classic—love how the runny yolk soaks into the toast. The butter step makes it extra flavorful.

  46. 4 stars
Never thought to make egg in a hole like this! I added some cheese on top. Yum!

  47. 5 stars
Soooo good. Salt and pepper right in the middle makes the whole thing taste way better. 10/10 would eat again.

  48. User avatar virgie.crona46 says:

    3 stars
Just made this and wow, way too many calories! I feel bad now 😢. But tasty.

  49. User avatar vallie.morar1980 says:

    2 stars
I tried it, but I’m not sure if I did it right. The egg kind of went all over. 🙁

  50. User avatar gretchen.conn2019 says:

    5 stars
This is the best breakfast I’ve ever made! The egg yolk is so runny, just how I like it. 🥚🥓

  51. 3 stars
Looks easy, but my egg ended up all over the place. Maybe I cut the hole too big??

    1. 4 stars
It happens! Maybe try a smaller cutter next time. The size of the hole can really make a difference! 😊

  52. 4 stars
The butter amount felt a little low for my pan, so I added extra. Still delicious, just needs a tiny tweak for different stoves.

  53. User avatar marion.cassin says:

    5 stars
This is genius! I love how simple yet delicious it is. Perfect for breakfast!

  54. 3 stars
I tried it and the bread got a bit soggy around the edges. Maybe my heat was too low or my bacon grease was messing with things? Still tasty, just not as crisp as I wanted.

  55. User avatar zackary.koelpin11 says:

    2 stars
Eggs and bacon are a classic combo, but this recipe feels a bit too gimmicky. Not my fav.

    1. User avatar monique.cummings52 says:

      5 stars
I’ve gotta disagree! This recipe is a breakfast classic but with a fun twist! Love the crispy bacon too.

  56. User avatar Thora Balistreri IV says:

    2 stars
Just made this! But I forgot to cook my bacon first 😬. Is it still good without?

  57. 4 stars
Not gonna lie, I thought it would be harder than it is. The cutter method is genius. Mine browned fast though, so medium heat for sure.

  58. User avatar travis.gutmann1990 says:

    4 stars
Real easy! My kids loved it! But watch the bacon, mine burnt a little.

  59. 5 stars
So simple and actually feels fancy for breakfast. The bacon on the side is the perfect move.

  60. User avatar Rhea Curran says:

    1 star
Why would you put bacon with eggs? They don’t go together… weird combo.

    1. User avatar viola.daugherty77 says:

      5 stars
Bacon and eggs are a classic! They go perfectly together; you should give it a try!

  61. 4 stars
Bacon is life! 🥓 But the egg part was too runny for my mom. Maybe cook it longer?

    1. User avatar genevieve.braun says:

      4 stars
I totally get that! My partner loves runny yolks, but I prefer it a bit firmer. Just a couple more minutes in the pan and it should be perfect! 🥚

    2. User avatar Marcos Stroman PhD says:

      3 stars
Nah, man. Runny eggs are the best part! Guess ur mom is not a fan of the gooey stuff. 😂

  62. 5 stars
I did this with white bread and it was super crispy. 10 outta 10 would recommend!

    1. User avatar Blue Dartwing says:

      5 stars
That sounds amazing! I can’t wait to try it with white bread. I love crispy textures!

    2. User avatar Mrs. Raymon Treutel says:

      3 stars
10 outta 10? Really? Is it that good? I might just stick with my regular eggs and bacon for now.

  63. 4 stars
Pretty good, but I think my heat was too high—egg cooked faster than I expected and the toast got a little too dark. Next time I’ll go slightly lower and cook a bit slower.

  64. User avatar Grìma Wormtongue says:

    4 stars
The seasoning step is optional but salt/pepper really makes it pop. I used smoked pepper and it was kinda fancy for a weekday meal.

  65. 4 stars
I did it with turkey bacon instead and it still worked. Only thing: my egg took longer than I expected on medium, but it was worth the wait.

    1. 5 stars
Nice! Turkey bacon is a great swap—glad the method still worked. And yeah, eggs can be slower on medium depending on pan heat and thickness. Worth it either way 🙌

    2. User avatar gerard.schmitt says:

      4 stars
Medium took me forever too 😅 I think my bread hole was a bit too small so the egg spread weird. Next time I’ll cut it a touch bigger. But the flavor was still good!

  66. 2 stars
Meh. The bread got a little too hard for me and the egg cooked unevenly. I might try lower heat next time and fewer minutes.

  67. User avatar Shee Vaneer says:

    5 stars
I used whole wheat bread and it came out great. Crispy edges, runny yolk—exactly what I wanted.

    1. User avatar Hotblack Desiato says:

      5 stars
Love that! Whole wheat usually makes it extra hearty—crispy edges + a runny yolk sounds perfect.

    2. User avatar yong.stanton says:

      3 stars
I tried this but my yolk was like… not runny lol. Maybe my pan was too hot. Still tasted good though!

  68. User avatar jammie.conroy83 says:

    4 stars
Worked first try! I used whole wheat bread and it came out crispy but not too hard.

  69. User avatar gussie.satterfield30 says:

    5 stars
Yasss! This is my new breakfast staple! Even my husband liked it!

  70. User avatar haydee.dare says:

    3 stars
Why do people call it “egg in a hole” like it’s fancy? It’s basically toast with egg. Still tasty, just not revolutionary.

  71. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

    2 stars
Seems good, but why do we need butter *and* bacon? Feels a bit redundant. I’ll try olive oil next time and see.

  72. User avatar bo.langworth90 says:

    4 stars
I like that the steps are simple, but I always struggle with the egg cooking evenly in the middle. Next time I’ll cover the pan for a minute—also, whole grain bread worked great for me.

  73. User avatar Slartibartfast says:

    3 stars
Looks easy enough, but isn’t the egg supposed to be cooked first? Why do it like this?

    1. User avatar damion.wehner73 says:

      4 stars
I was a bit confused too but I think it’s supposed to cook together. Could be a nice way to get that yolk nice and runny. 🤔

  74. User avatar lupe.berge says:

    4 stars
I always mess up the egg part a bit, but the hole stays in place with the right cutter. Tasty either way.

  75. User avatar jo.schimmel2 says:

    3 stars
Not bad. I used pepper but forgot the salt and it felt kinda flat. Next time I’ll season more.

    1. User avatar genesis.yundt2025 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—salt makes a huge difference with eggs. Pepper alone can feel kinda dull, especially if the bacon isn’t salty enough. Next time, just give it a quick pinch both times.

    2. User avatar Mr. Percy Jones says:

      3 stars
Wait… I usually skip salt and it still tastes fine to me? Maybe your bacon wasn’t salty. Also, the butter in Step 1 sometimes burns if the heat’s too high so that might’ve made it flat too. 🤷‍♂️

  76. 3 stars
Mine stuck to the pan a bit even though I used butter. Next time I’ll try a nonstick skillet or a little more butter. Taste was still good though.

  77. User avatar foster.nikolaus1970 says:

    5 stars
This is such a classic—my whole family loves it. The bacon on the side is the right call.

  78. User avatar stephine.haley60 says:

    3 stars
Isn’t this kinda basic? Like, who doesn’t know how to make this? 🙄

    1. 3 stars
Basic? Maybe, but not everyone cooks, you know! It’s a great start for beginners.

    2. 4 stars
I think it’s basic too, but it’s still a classic! Sometimes simple is best. 😊

  79. User avatar rupert.barton7 says:

    2 stars
Why does everyone like this? It’s just bread and egg! 😒

    1. 5 stars
It’s not just bread and egg! It’s about the crispy bacon and that golden yolk! 😋

  80. User avatar arianne.romaguera1965 says:

    2 stars
I’m skeptical about cooking the egg inside the bread without overdoing it. Mine cooked too fast and got rubbery 😅

    1. 4 stars
Oh no 😅 Yeah, that’s a super common issue. I’d try lowering the heat (like low-medium) and keep an eye on it—if the skillet’s too hot the egg sets fast and turns rubbery. Also, toast the bread just a bit first, then add the egg so you’re not cooking the bread and egg at full intensity at the same time.

  81. User avatar Frankie and Benjy says:

    4 stars
I think my hole cutter was too small, so the egg spilled a little. Still tasted great tho.

  82. User avatar arden.mertz says:

    3 stars
I tried once and the yolk popped all over the pan. Also I forgot to toast first and it got soggy. Still, I’ll attempt again with more patience.

  83. User avatar marcell.durgan says:

    2 stars
Only 1 slice of bread? I ate two and was starving again lol. But the idea is solid, will make again.

  84. User avatar lorine.legros says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have a cutter so I used the rim of a mason jar and it worked lol. I like mine a little runny, and it turned out great.

    1. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

      5 stars
That’s genius 😂 I’ve used a jar rim before too—works surprisingly well! Runny egg is the way.

    2. User avatar marti.kling24 says:

      3 stars
Mine never comes out right—last time the egg leaked and I had scrambled toast. Maybe I cut the hole too small? Either way yours sounds tasty.

  85. User avatar bernardina.schroeder says:

    1 star
    Ok

  86. 3 stars
I prefer my eggs scrambled, but this was fun to make!

  87. User avatar dannie.torphy says:

    5 stars
Easy peasy! My kids loved it. Will make again for sure!

  88. User avatar lyn.kutch says:

    4 stars
Delicious! Especially with thick-cut bacon. Yum! 😍

  89. User avatar trent.hauck says:

    5 stars
Mmm! Bacon makes everything better; this recipe rocks!

  90. User avatar brain.toy64 says:

    4 stars
Yum!! I love bacon and eggs. Perfect fit for breakfast! Have to try it with avocado next time.

  91. User avatar Paul "Muad'Dib" "Usul" Atreides says:

    5 stars
This is such a classic breakfast—my favorite part is how the egg soaks into the bread. I did mine a little longer for a runnier yolk and it was perfect. Bacon on the side was the right move.

  92. 4 stars
Wouldn’t call it a recipe. I’ve been doing this since college (and I don’t even cook). Only thing I change is I add hot sauce after.

    1. User avatar kyong.king says:

      5 stars
Honestly love this—egg + toast + bacon is basically foolproof comfort food. Hot sauce after is a great move too.

    2. 3 stars
Hmm I’d call it a recipe lol. I tried something like this but my egg always runs out—maybe I’m cutting the hole too big or cooking on too high heat? Still tasty though.

  93. User avatar amado.hamill35 says:

    2 stars
The whole-grain bread totally overpowered the egg for me. I’m more of a white bread person for this. But technique is solid.

  94. User avatar Leto II Atreides says:

    4 stars
Why is this called “egg in a hole” like the bread does all the work? 😄 Still delicious though—super satisfying breakfast.

Haha fair question 😄 It’s called that because the egg basically cooks “in the hole” while the bread toasts around it. The bread isn’t doing all the work—it’s more like the little cradle!

This is a classic! My kids loved it. I added cheese on top and it was to die for!

Disagree—bacon on the side is unnecessary. I just cook it in the same pan and let the egg soak up the flavors. 10/10.

I see what you mean—mixing the bacon flavor into the egg sounds great. I usually cook bacon first, but cooking it right in the same pan could definitely save time and add extra savor.

Nah, I disagree. Bacon grease gets everywhere and the bread turns greasy. “On the side” lets you control crispness and don’t ruin the egg. Still—your 10/10 confidence is funny 😅

Easy and fast. I didn’t even have a cutter so I used a bottle cap and it worked. Bacon on the side is the way to do it.

Love this—using a bottle cap is genius and “bacon on the side” totally makes sense. I’m trying this next time!

Pretty classic but honestly super satisfying. I did 3 minutes on one side and another couple for medium. Next time I’ll make the hole a tiny bit bigger.

I think cooking the egg too long makes it rubbery—medium heat helped but I watched it like a hawk. Bacon crisped nicely too.

why not just cook the egg separately? lol but ok it’s good and fun to make.

I tried this once and my hole bread fell apart… like the cutter slipped. Still tasted good though. Maybe next time I’ll use thicker bread? Also I always add way more pepper than it says, idk.

Totally fair—cooking the egg separately is easier. 😅 But the whole point here is the bread “cup” absorbing some of the egg flavor. It’s basically breakfast magic.

Could’ve used more instructions on the timing. Like how long for runny vs well done? I guessed and it came out slightly over.

Totally agree—timing is the whole thing with “runny vs well done.” I usually pull it when the whites look set but the yolk still jiggles. More guidance would’ve saved me from guessing too.

I’ve made this a bunch and honestly it depends on pan heat. If your egg overcooked, try medium-low and cover the pan for faster set without drying. Works for me every time. 🙂

Salt and pepper “to taste” is obvious, but I wish it said when to add pepper—like before flipping or right after cracking. I did it right away and the flavor was kinda muted.

Not gonna lie, I burned the first one because my skillet was too hot. Second try was perfect though—egg cooked evenly.

This is such a classic comfort meal—crispy bread edges + runny yolk is perfect. I used whole wheat and it tasted amazing.

I’m not sure why people call it “egg in a hole” like it’s fancy. It’s just toast with an egg, lol. But it *is* good.

I followed the steps but my egg didn’t stay in the hole—kind of slid out. Maybe my bread wasn’t centered right. Still tasty though, just messy.

Mine came out a little dry—the egg set too fast because my skillet runs hot. Next time I’ll lower the heat and cover it briefly.

Thanks for the tip! I’ve definitely had that happen when the skillet runs hotter—covering it a bit makes sense to help the egg set without drying out.

This came out perfect—crispy edges, runny yolk. I used whole wheat and it still tasted great. Bacon on the side is genius.
