Chicken Tikka Masala

September 20, 2024

Chicken Tikka Masala is one of the most beloved dishes in Indian cuisine, known for its rich, creamy sauce and bold, aromatic flavors. The dish features tender chunks of marinated chicken cooked in a spiced tomato-based sauce, creating a perfect balance of smoky, savory, and slightly tangy flavors. Served with basmati rice or naan bread, Chicken Tikka Masala is a comforting and satisfying meal that’s both flavorful and hearty. Whether you’re a fan of Indian food or new to the cuisine, this dish is sure to impress with its depth of flavor and luxurious, creamy texture.

The key to a great Chicken Tikka Masala lies in the marinated chicken. The chicken is typically marinated in a mixture of yogurt, garlic, ginger, and a blend of spices like cumin, coriander, turmeric, and garam masala. This marinade not only tenderizes the chicken but also infuses it with a deep, aromatic flavor. The chicken is then grilled or baked, which gives it a smoky flavor before being added to the creamy, spiced sauce.

The sauce itself is the heart of Chicken Tikka Masala. Made with a base of tomatoes, onions, and garlic, it’s simmered with a variety of spices, including cumin, paprika, and garam masala, to create a rich, flavorful foundation. Cream or coconut milk is then added to the sauce to give it a silky, smooth texture, which balances out the spiciness and enhances the dish’s richness. The combination of spices and cream creates a sauce that is both fragrant and comforting.

Chicken Tikka Masala can be served with a variety of sides. Traditional options include steamed basmati rice, which soaks up the sauce perfectly, or freshly baked naan bread for dipping. You can also add a side of cucumber raita to cool down the spice or a fresh green salad to balance the richness of the dish. For those looking for a spicier kick, a few chopped chilies can be added to the sauce to heat things up.

This dish is highly versatile and can be made in advance, allowing the flavors to develop even further. It’s perfect for feeding a crowd, making it a great choice for family dinners, special occasions, or casual gatherings. Whether you’re a seasoned cook or just beginning your journey into Indian cuisine, Chicken Tikka Masala is a dish that is sure to delight with every bite.

Followed the recipe but added too much salt. Oops 😅 but still tasty!

  2. 5 stars
Yessssss! The flavors medley so well together. Made it for my family and they loved it!

  3. 3 stars
The heavy cream made it too rich for my taste idk. Maybe use less next time.

    1. 3 stars
Rich? Thought rich is always better! But hey, to each their own. Maybe I’ll try with less cream next time too.

I totally get what you mean! Heavy cream can be a lot. Maybe try half and half next time for a lighter touch?

  4. 3 stars
I tried this and it was ok, but kinda too spicy for me. I think less cumin next time.

I find that too much cumin can really overpower the dish. Maybe try using just one teaspoon next time? 👍

Tika Masala? More like Chicken Mess-ala! It was a disaster in my kitchen. Never again.

So much cream! I thought this was healthy 😂. Whatever, still yum!

I know right! But who can resist creamy goodness? 😋

  7. 2 stars
Not bad, but it didn’t taste like the tikka masala I get at restaurants. Feels more like butter chicken. Also, I ran out of cilantro so I skipped garnish—maybe that’s why.

  8. User avatar gretchen.borer2021 says:

Really good but took longer than 20 mins in the sauce. Chicken was still pink!

  9. User avatar Feyd-Rautha Rabban says:

Yum! This was way better than takeout. I even added some extra spices like chili flakes for a kick. Will make again!

    1. 5 stars

Didn’t have cilantro, so I used parsley. Still tasted pretty good! 🤷‍♀️

    1. User avatar Gormlaith says:

Glad it worked out! Parsley isn’t too different from cilantro, right? Can’t wait to try this myself!

I totally agree! This dish is like a party in your mouth! 🎉

  13. 2 stars
I don’t think it turned out right. My sauce was too runny, and the chicken was kinda dry. Maybe there’s too much yogurt?

  14. User avatar merlene.schowalter10 says:

Yum! This recipe is bomb! The flavors are on point. My family loved it! Will be making again.

Cilantro? Who puts that in chicken!? Smells weird. Coulda been better without it.

  16. 3 stars
I don’t know… the yogurt made it too tangy for me. Can I skip it?

  17. User avatar wesley.corwin60 says:

The spices smell amazing while cooking, not gonna lie. I added a pinch of sugar because my tomato sauce was very acidic. That fixed it for me. Would make again.

    1. User avatar vincent.dooley says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome—adding a pinch of sugar is such a smart fix for acidity. 😋 I always forget that trick until it’s too late. Glad it worked for you!

    2. User avatar hoyt.cruickshank says:

Interesting! I’ve heard sugar helps, but I usually just add more cream and simmer longer. Tomato sauce can vary a lot though—might try your pinch next time. Sounds tasty.

Tastes good, but why so much cream? Isn’t it too rich? 🍽️

I don’t really get the appeal of Chicken Tikka Masala. Too creamy for my taste and not spicy enough. But my cousin loves it!

    1. User avatar Piter De Vries says:

      3 stars
Too creamy? Nah, that’s the best part! But I guess everyone got different taste buds. Maybe try it with less cream?

    2. 4 stars
I totally get what you mean! I tried it once and it was way too creamy for me too. I prefer my food more spicy, like a proper curry!

  20. 5 stars
This is the best Chicken Tikka Masala I’ve ever made! So creamy and full of flavor. Will definitely make again!

    1. User avatar Master Yi says:

      2 stars
I don’t think it’s that great. Mine turned out too spicy and creamy. Maybe I did something wrong?

    2. User avatar Kah Mael says:
