Pasta and Peas Recipe

October 28, 2025

Pasta and peas, or pasta e piselli as it’s known in Italy, is one of those humble dishes that perfectly embodies the essence of Italian home cooking. It’s simple, nourishing, and full of flavor without relying on complicated techniques or fancy ingredients. This dish originated in the southern regions of Italy, where resourceful cooks transformed pantry staples into hearty meals that could feed the whole family. Today, pasta and peas remains a beloved comfort food, cherished for its creamy texture and gentle sweetness.

The key to this dish lies in its simplicity. All you need are a few basic ingredients: short pasta, green peas, olive oil, onion, and Parmesan cheese. Some families add pancetta or prosciutto for a savory touch, while others keep it vegetarian and rely on garlic, herbs, and a bit of pepper for depth. No matter how it’s prepared, the peas add a delicate sweetness that balances beautifully with the savory base. The starchy water from the pasta acts as a natural thickener, binding everything together into a silky, cohesive dish.

Cooking the pasta directly with the peas in one pot is what makes this recipe so special. As the pasta cooks, it absorbs the flavor of the peas and broth, creating a rich sauce without the need for cream or butter. The final touch is a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and a generous handful of grated Parmesan, which gives the dish its signature creamy finish.

Pasta and peas is the perfect example of how Italian cuisine celebrates simplicity. It’s quick to prepare, ready in under thirty minutes, and works just as well for a casual weeknight dinner as it does for a comforting Sunday meal. Serve it with crusty bread to soak up the sauce or a crisp arugula salad on the side. With every spoonful, you’ll taste the warmth of tradition and the beauty of uncomplicated cooking. This dish reminds us that the best meals often come from the simplest combinations, made with love and care at home.

Me and my kids loved it! I used fresh peas instead of frozen, and it was so good!

    1. User avatar athena.homenick14 says:

      5 stars
That sounds great! Fresh peas must have added a nice crunch. I’ll have to try that next time!

I dunno, fresh peas? I always use frozen, aren’t they like, the same?

  2. User avatar cliff.vonrueden2023 says:

Could’ve used more sauce. Parmesan alone felt a bit dry unless you really toss well. Maybe add butter or more cheese?

  3. User avatar dan.hirthe87 says:

    2 stars
I dunno, was kinda bland. Thought it would be more tasty with some spices or something.

Pasta n’ peas? That’s a weird combo, but it actually worked. Who knew? 3 stars!

Weird combo? I dunno, pasta and peas is classic! But hey, at least you tried it! 🤷

    2. 5 stars
I thought the same when I saw it! But it’s actually really good! Gonna try it again for sure! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Why do u need parmesan? It didn’t make it better. Just use cheddar instead.

  7. User avatar hal.schmidt says:

    5 stars
This was a delightful recipe! The garlic and parmesan really elevated the dish. Will make again!

  8. 5 stars
Wow, so yum! I shook some red pepper flakes on top and it was 🔥.

  9. User avatar yadira.ferry16 says:

    5 stars
This was super easy and quick! I loved it. Just perfect for a weeknight dinner.

  10. 3 stars
The directions are clear, but 1 minute for garlic feels short. Mine tasted a little raw until I cooked it closer to 2 minutes.

  11. User avatar lorean.dicki says:

    2 stars
I don’t get why this is so popular. The recipe seems too simple and bland to me.

  12. User avatar cheyenne.fritsch54 says:

I omitted the cheese cause I’m lactose intolerant. Still good but missed the flavor. 🙁

  13. User avatar maryetta.mraz13 says:

Tasted good, but I used frozen garlic instead of fresh. Did I mess it up? 🤔

    Mmm quick dinner 👍

    1. User avatar kandis.kautzer says:

      5 stars
Right?! This one’s perfect for busy nights—garlic + peas + parm is such a simple combo.

    2. User avatar luther.rau4 says:

      4 stars
Quick, yes… but I always forget to thaw the peas 😅 still tastes fine though. Would add a squeeze of lemon next time.

  15. User avatar daniel.waters says:

    2 stars
Eh. I tried it and the peas got a little mushy. Maybe my heat was too high? Still ate it, but not a keeper for me.

  16. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    4 stars
My kids loved it! I added some chicken breast for protein. Will make again!!

  17. User avatar Ilban Richese says:

I made this but forgot the cheese and it was still okay. Could use more flavor tho.

    1. User avatar carol.herzog says:

      4 stars
Sounds like you made a valiant effort! Maybe next time try adding some herbs or spices for more flavor. 😊

  18. 5 stars
My kid asked for seconds 😅 The texture was nice and the Parmesan made it feel fancy without effort.

  19. 1 star
I tried this with whole wheat pasta and it was way too heavy. Also the garlic flavor didn’t really come through. Maybe I need more cheese or butter?

  20. User avatar wellRespected says:

    3 stars
Garlic burned slightly for me (oops, I got distracted). Still tasted good but next time I’ll keep it closer to 30-45 seconds.

  21. User avatar roni.schneider92 says:

    3 stars
Not sure about “any type of pasta.” I tried something smaller and it got a little dry. Olive oil amount might need adjusting depending on the pasta shape.

  22. 5 stars
This was easy and quick! Loved it!

    1. User avatar Johnny Deckow I says:

      5 stars
Totally agree! So simple and delicious. I might add some chicken next time!

    2. 2 stars
Really? I found it kinda bland. Maybe I did something wrong?

  23. 4 stars
I’m skeptical about “any type of pasta” lol. I used spaghetti and it was okay, but I think penne would hold the sauce better. Still tasty though.

  24. User avatar belva.feil98 says:

    5 stars
Quick and delicious! The garlic + peas combo is surprisingly comforting. I added a squeeze of lemon at the end and it really brightened it up.

  25. User avatar craig.streich36 says:

    5 stars
Super quick and honestly delicious. The garlic + Parmesan combo is perfect, and the peas make it feel a little fancy without trying too hard. I used spaghetti and it worked great!

  26. User avatar roberta.frami20 says:

    5 stars
So good 😋 and way faster than I expected. My kid actually ate the peas! Will make again.

  27. 4 stars
I made this for lunch and it was done in like 20 minutes. Could’ve used a touch more salt, but overall really solid comfort food.

    1. User avatar jacquie.gottlieb1998 says:

      5 stars
20 minutes is fast! I like when it’s simple like this—I’ll try adding a pinch more salt next time. Did you use fresh garlic or minced from a jar?

  28. User avatar aide.bergnaum says:

    5 stars
Five stars. Easy, cheap, and tastes like you actually planned dinner. I’m adding this to my rotation.

  29. User avatar manual.little66 says:

    5 stars
Omg super delish! Made it for my girlfriend and she was so impressed! ❤️

  30. User avatar luigi.grant says:

    5 stars
I’m a pasta snob and I still liked this. For a “whatever’s in the freezer” recipe, it’s surprisingly gourmet.

    1. User avatar tamika.stiedemann71 says:

      5 stars
Same here—I’m also picky with pasta, and this one genuinely surprised me. The garlic + Parmesan combo makes it taste way more “intentional” than a freezer meal.

  31. 3 stars
Not bad, but I expected more sauce. The olive oil and Parmesan are tasty, yet it feels more like pasta tossed with toppings than a creamy dish.

    1. 3 stars
Nah, I think the Parmesan + pasta water makes it saucy enough. It’s supposed to be simple and quick, not heavy. Maybe you just needed more cheese?

    2. User avatar patti.rogahn says:

      4 stars
Totally get what you mean—this is more of a light toss than a creamy sauce situation. Next time I’d add a splash of pasta water or even a bit of cream to loosen it up.

  32. User avatar Bowerick Wowbagger says:

    3 stars
I followed the steps exactly and it tasted like “buttery garlic pasta” which is… fine, I guess. Wouldn’t call it life-changing.

    1. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

      3 stars
I mean… buttery garlic pasta is still pretty good 😅 But yeah, it’s not exactly gourmet. If your garlic was a bit strong or the peas were overcooked, it can turn kinda one-note.

    2. 4 stars
Totally get that—it’s a pretty simple, comfort-food kind of recipe. If you wanted it “life-changing,” maybe try adding lemon zest, a pinch of chili flakes, or a little pasta water to make it silkier.

  33. 3 stars
The recipe is fine, but I’m gonna be honest: I usually skip thawing peas and it works anyway. Also, garlic burned for me at 1 minute… maybe my heat was too high.

  34. User avatar Sunny Jakubowski says:

    5 stars
Super quick and honestly really comforting. The garlic + Parmesan combo makes it taste way fancier than it is.

    1. User avatar annice.boyer16 says:

      4 stars
I tried it but I used like 3 cloves of garlic and it was way too strong 😅 still tasted good though. Probably should’ve followed the “1 clove” part.

    2. User avatar keisha.raynor says:

      5 stars
Yes! That garlic + Parmesan combo is seriously the cheat code. This is the kind of meal I can make on a weeknight without stressing.

  35. User avatar Zaphod Beeblebrox says:

    2 stars
I tried this with low-fat Parmesan and it tasted kinda bland. Maybe regular Parm matters a lot here.

  36. User avatar rosann.adams says:

    4 stars
Honestly I don’t trust any recipe that says “any type of pasta” lol. But I tried it anyway and it was actually good.

    1. User avatar dee.pagac30 says:

      5 stars
Same! “Any type of pasta” usually feels like a lazy template, but this one actually makes sense—peas + garlic + Parmesan work with basically everything. Glad it turned out good for you!

  37. User avatar malena.macgyver2014 says:

    4 stars
Not bad, but frozen peas need more time than 3-4 minutes or they stay a little icy. I simmered a couple extra minutes and it improved a lot.

  38. User avatar graig.zboncak2020 says:

    3 stars
I followed it pretty much exactly and it tasted a bit bland. Could be my Parmesan was too salty? Maybe more pepper or a pinch of chili flakes would help.

  39. 4 stars
Pretty good, but I think 3-4 minutes for peas wasn’t quite enough—mine were still a bit firm. Next time I’ll cook them a little longer.

  40. 4 stars
Good comfort food. I used a little less garlic (didn’t wanna overpower it) and it still worked great. Next time I’ll toast the Parmesan slightly? Not sure if that’s a thing.

  41. 5 stars
Super easy and actually tastes like something you’d get at a casual Italian place. The garlic + Parmesan combo is perfect with the peas.

  42. User avatar macie.hermiston1952 says:

    2 stars
This is basically just pasta with peas… kinda boring. I guess it’s easy though. Also I didn’t have garlic so I used garlic powder and it was ok.

  43. User avatar windy.hermann77 says:

    5 stars
Love it. My toddler ate it too, which is basically a miracle. I used frozen peas straight from the bag (didn’t thaw) and it still turned out fine.

  44. User avatar shirleen.kovacek9 says:

    2 stars
Garlic burned for me at 1 minute—maybe my heat was too high. Still tasted okay, but heads up to watch it closely.

  45. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

    4 stars
This recipe is great, but I added chicken for protein, turned out fantastic!

  46. 5 stars
Made it tonight and it was a hit with my picky eater. I used spaghetti and just added a tiny splash of pasta water to help it cling.

  47. User avatar augustina.king47 says:

    3 stars
Tried it—pleasant, but mine turned out a bit bland. I think I under-salted and didn’t toss long enough to coat everything.

  48. User avatar cindie.stark says:

    3 stars
The flavor is nice, but mine turned out a bit bland until I salted more. Next time I’ll salt the pasta water too.

  49. User avatar sally.durgan says:

    5 stars
Easy weeknight dinner! The garlic + peas combo tastes way better than I expected, and the Parmesan really pulls it together.

    1. User avatar Aurelion Sol says:

      5 stars
Tried this tonight—so fast and honestly the garlic + peas surprised me too. I added a squeeze of lemon at the end and it popped. Will make again.

  50. User avatar leandro.wolf55 says:

    4 stars
I followed it pretty much exactly, but I added a splash of pasta water at the end and it got creamier. Would recommend.

  51. User avatar anibal.konopelski19 says:

    5 stars
Super simple and honestly delicious. The garlic + Parmesan combo is exactly what I wanted for a quick weeknight meal.

  52. User avatar adam.cummerata73 says:

    2 stars
This was kinda bland for me. I did salt/pepper to taste, but I think I needed lemon or chili flakes. Might be my palate.

  53. User avatar Rory Storm says:

    1 star
Idk why people love this. It tastes like plain pasta with peas. Could’ve used more seasoning, like chili flakes or lemon.

    1. User avatar harvey.gorczany1983 says:

      5 stars
I get where you’re coming from—this is pretty simple. I usually go heavier on garlic + add a pinch of chili flakes and a squeeze of lemon at the end. Makes it pop.

  54. User avatar Michael83 says:

    5 stars
Simple and comforting! The garlic + peas combo is exactly what I want for a quick weeknight meal. I used spaghetti and it turned out great—needed a touch more salt though.

    1. 5 stars
Agreed—this is super comforting and fast. I love the garlic + peas combo too. I also usually add a pinch more salt at the end (my Parmesan is kinda salty already, so it depends).

  55. User avatar elmo.reinger2000 says:

    3 stars
I forgot the garlic and it was still okay… but definitely better with it!

  56. User avatar rey.mayer says:

    5 stars
I followed it pretty much exactly, but I added a squeeze of lemon at the end. Wow—fresh and bright. 10/10 for weeknights.

    1. 3 stars
Lemon?? I guess it makes it brighter, but I dunno… I feel like peas already taste a bit sweet. I’d rather add more parmesan or pepper instead.

    2. User avatar tena.kemmer2026 says:

      5 stars
Love this idea! Lemon at the end sounds like the perfect “freshen it up” move. I’ve been making it bland lately—gonna try your version 😄

  57. User avatar basementDweller says:

    2 stars
Kinda bland… I think it needs more seasoning or sauce.

  58. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    4 stars
Could’ve used a little more sauce for my taste. Maybe more olive oil or a splash of pasta water would make it silkier.

  59. User avatar brittanie.runte23 says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about using only Parmesan and no other seasoning. It tasted fine, but it felt like it was missing something like chili flakes.

  60. User avatar olin.mayer70 says:

    5 stars
My kids ate it all! Thanks for the recipe! 🎉

  61. User avatar valentin.gutkowski61 says:

    1 star
I don’t get how people like peas in pasta… yuck!

  62. 2 stars
Kind of bland for me. I know it says salt and pepper to taste, but even after adjusting, it still felt flat. Next time I’ll add some chili flakes or lemon zest.

    1. 4 stars
Maybe you didn’t salt the pasta water? I always do that, otherwise everything can taste flat even if the final seasoning is adjusted.

    2. 4 stars
Totally get that—this one is pretty “default” if you don’t add something bright. Lemon zest or chili flakes sounds perfect. I also sometimes add a squeeze of lemon juice at the end.

  63. User avatar eugene.kemmer says:

    3 stars
Wait… only 1/4 cup Parmesan? That seems low. Mine barely tasted cheesy until I added extra. Still good though.

  64. User avatar kallie.kulas41 says:

    5 stars
Simple and honestly pretty perfect for a weeknight. The garlic + peas smell amazing while the pasta tosses. Parmesan at the end is the right move.

  65. User avatar lisandra.keebler5 says:

    4 stars
Made this with spaghetti and didn’t even thaw the peas (oops). Still worked—just cooked them a minute longer. Super comforting.

  66. 4 stars
Pretty tasty, but I think 3-4 minutes for the peas was a bit long for my thawed ones. They got slightly soft. Still, Parmesan fixed everything.

  67. User avatar delmar.jaskolski says:

    2 stars
Garlic 1 minute?? That’s way too long for me—burnt it the first time. Also, I didn’t have Parmesan so I used cheddar and… yeah it was different. Still ate it though.

    1. User avatar chi.jerde says:

      4 stars
1 minute is like, forever for garlic 😂 My first try it was bitter too. Also I think cheddar melts different—more salty? Anyway respect for still eating it.

    2. User avatar Darrick Hartmann says:

      5 stars
Totally get it—garlic can go from fragrant to burnt *fast*. I usually do like 20–30 seconds once the pan’s hot. Cheddar actually sounds kinda tasty with peas though!

  68. User avatar beulah.lockman says:

    5 stars
I followed it pretty much exactly. I used spaghetti and it came out great—al dente pasta really helps since you’re only heating through at the end.

  69. 2 stars
Pasta and peas? Weird combo, man.

  70. User avatar Feral Falmer says:

    4 stars
Not bad at all! Kids ate it without complaining, which is rare. I did add extra pepper because I like everything spicy.

    1. 4 stars
I tried this once and it turned out kind of bland—maybe I didn’t salt the peas/pasta enough. Adding more pepper sounds like the fix.

    2. User avatar shelia.daniel says:

      5 stars
Kids actually ate it?? That’s a win 😂 The pepper idea is spot on for me too!

  71. User avatar Falmer Warmonger says:

    3 stars
The measurements are a little confusing—“1 cup frozen peas thawed” is fine, but I eyeballed it and mine was drier than expected. Still edible.

  72. User avatar Gag Halfrunt says:

    5 stars
So simple but surprisingly good. The garlic + peas combo is perfect, and the Parmesan really pulls it together.

  73. 3 stars
Not bad, but “any type of pasta” is a trap. I tried a thicker noodle and it felt less saucy. Next time I’ll use something thinner and save a bit of pasta water.

    1. User avatar joya.wunsch says:

      5 stars
Good point—“any type of pasta” definitely depends on how saucy you want it. Thinner noodles usually cling better, and that pasta water trick really helps bring everything together.

  74. User avatar gertrudis.halvorson22 says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but 1 minute garlic is a little vague. Mine burned fast on my stove. Next time I’ll lower the heat.

    1. User avatar kandice.skiles10 says:

      5 stars
Yeah, “1 minute” can be super different depending on stove power and pan thickness. I’d suggest medium-low and keep an eye on it—once it’s just fragrant and not browned, you’re good.

  75. User avatar jasper.crooks1987 says:

    5 stars
My kids ate it without complaining (that’s basically a miracle). I added extra peas and it was gone fast.

  76. User avatar pura.lynch says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but I found it a little bland until I added more salt. Also 3-4 minutes for peas felt long for my frozen ones.

  77. User avatar karine.hills1955 says:

    2 stars
Pretty mid. I mean it’s fine and quick, but it didn’t feel very ‘wow’ after the first bite. Maybe add chili flakes?

  78. User avatar Draugr Wight says:

    4 stars
Made this tonight and it hit the spot. I used spaghetti and it still worked great. Next time I’ll add a squeeze of lemon.

  79. User avatar Major Gulgowski says:

    4 stars
I followed it pretty closely, but I added a splash of pasta water. Made it a little creamier—would recommend.

  80. User avatar The Allitnils says:

    4 stars
Frozen peas cook way faster than I expected—4 minutes was perfect. Great texture, not mushy.

  81. User avatar delmer.kshlerin58 says:

    4 stars
I think the garlic amount is a little small—only 1 clove doesn’t seem like enough. I used two and it was way better.

  82. User avatar Mr. Prosser says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about putting garlic in olive oil for only 1 minute. Mine tasted a little raw. Maybe my pan was too cool—still, the overall flavor was decent.

    1. User avatar freddie.kozey19 says:

      5 stars
Yeah, if the oil/pan wasn’t hot enough, 1 minute might not mellow the garlic. I usually look for it to just turn lightly golden—otherwise it can taste harsh.

  83. User avatar ling.rohan67 says:

    2 stars
    meh

    1. User avatar Samwise Gamgee says:

      4 stars
I wouldn’t call it meh—this is a solid weeknight meal. Maybe add lemon zest or a pinch of chili flakes to make it pop.

    2. User avatar marlin.pfeffer says:

      3 stars
Yeah it’s pretty simple, but honestly “meh” is fair—still tastes decent with the Parmesan.

  84. 4 stars
Not bad for a weeknight. I used spaghetti and it worked fine, but I think 3-4 minutes for the peas was a little short—next time I’ll cook them until warmer and a bit softer.

  85. User avatar Tom Bombadil says:

    2 stars
I don’t get why people love peas with pasta. It feels kinda… bland. Parmesan helps, but I’d rather do this with broccoli.

  86. User avatar Frodo Baggins says:

    5 stars
Five stars for the simplicity. I made it while half watching TV and it still came out great.

  87. 4 stars
    Simpel maar goed!

  88. User avatar devon.oberbrunner47 says:

This is one of those recipes where you can’t really mess it up. The timing is forgiving, and the flavors come together fast. Will make again!

The flavor is simple but solid. I’m giving it 4 stars because it’s fast and doesn’t require weird ingredients.
