A savory and delicious French Mushroom Tart perfect for a light lunch or appetizer.
French mushroom tart is a savory pastry that highlights the earthy richness of mushrooms combined with a crisp, buttery crust. Elegant yet comforting, it is a dish that reflects classic French cooking, where simple ingredients are transformed into something deeply flavorful and refined.
The base of the tart is typically a homemade pie crust or puff pastry that bakes into a golden, flaky shell. This crust provides a delicate contrast to the soft, savory filling. The pastry is often pre-baked to ensure it remains crisp even after the filling is added.
The filling centers around mushrooms, which are sautéed until tender and golden to develop their natural umami flavor. Varieties such as button, cremini, or wild mushrooms can be used, often combined for greater depth. Garlic, shallots, and butter are commonly added during cooking to enhance aroma and richness, while herbs like thyme or parsley bring freshness and balance.
A creamy element is usually incorporated to bind the filling, such as eggs mixed with cream or crème fraîche. This creates a smooth, custard-like texture once baked, allowing the mushrooms to remain the star while adding a luxurious mouthfeel. Cheese, such as Gruyère or Parmesan, is sometimes included for extra depth and savory complexity.
Once assembled, the tart is baked until the filling is set and the top is lightly golden. It can be served warm or at room temperature, making it versatile for different occasions. It works well as an appetizer, light lunch, or part of a larger spread.
French mushroom tart is appreciated for its balance of simplicity and elegance. The combination of crisp pastry, earthy mushrooms, and creamy filling creates a dish that is both comforting and sophisticated, showcasing the timeless appeal of French cuisine.

I tried this recipe and it was AMAZING! The mushrooms were so flavorful!
I totally agree! This tart is to die for. I added some spinach too, made it even better!
This was okay, but it felt like it was missing something. Maybe some bacon next time?
I don’t really like mushrooms, but my husband loved it! I guess it’s good for mushroom lovers.
Really easy to make but puff pastry took forever to cook! What’s the deal with that?
Pretty good but I don’t think gruyere cheese is neccassery. Cheddar would be fine!
But gruyere is what makes it French, right? If you change it to cheddar, it won’t be the same!
I totally agree! Cheddar would give it a nice kick. Gruyere is kinda overrated in my opinion.
Simple & delicious! I added some spinach to the mix.
Yum! This recipe has become a regular in our house!
I just used leftover mushrooms and it turned out fine. Didn’t even follow recipe closely!
How do you preheat an oven again? I’m confused.
Dude, can u like not? Puff pastry is so hard to work with! lol
Made this tonight—so crispy on the outside and the mushroom-garlic combo is legit. I used half Gruyère and half emmental and it still came out great.
Love hearing that! Half Gruyère/half emmental is a great swap—both melt nicely, and the flavor is still very “French.” 😋
Absolutely delicious! Made this for dinner and everyone loved it. Will make again!
So glad to hear that! It’s definitely a crowd-pleaser. What sides did you serve with it?
I don’t know, mushrooms aren’t my thing. Looks fancy but I think it’s too complicated.
Gruyère is the move. I used half gruyère/half mozzarella because that’s what I had and it was still very tasty—just less “French” tasting, lol.
5 stars!!! easy and fancy. gonna make again.
French food is overrated. This was just a fancy pizza to me, not impressed.
Meh. The taste was okay, but I wanted more cheese pull and more seasoning. Also my puff pastry puffed less than expected (maybe I didn’t thaw it enough?). Still edible, just not wow.
I love mushrooms, so I’m biased, but this recipe nailed it. The thyme makes it smell incredible while baking. I added a pinch of smoked paprika and it turned out even better.
Totally agree—mushrooms + thyme is such a good combo. I tried smoked paprika once with mushrooms and it really does bump the flavor up. Adding that to this tart sounds delicious!
Took too long to cook, pastry was a bit soggy but it tasted somewhat good.
Honestly I was skeptical about puff pastry + mushrooms, but the garlic and thyme combo is great. Would serve again, especially if you want something fancy without too much effort.
Made this for dinner and it was gone fast! The pastry got perfectly golden and the mushrooms were super flavorful. I added a pinch of red pepper flakes and it kicked it up a notch.
Pretty good, but mine got a little soggy on the bottom. I think my mushrooms released too much water—next time I’ll cook them longer until they look drier. Flavor is still great though, especially with the garlic.
So easy to make! I used cheddar instead of gruyere because that’s all I had, and it was still yum!
This came out so golden and crispy on the edges—exactly the vibe I wanted. I used cremini mushrooms and it still worked great. Gruyère makes it feel fancy without much effort.
This is good but… 400°F for 25-30 minutes was too short for my oven. The pastry was kinda pale at the end. I had to bake like 10 more minutes. Don’t trust oven guesses, I guess.
This was okay… not gonna lie. My pastry puffed, but the center got a little soggy because my mushrooms released a lot of water. Maybe I should’ve cooked them longer.
Super easy and looks fancy. I used cremini mushrooms and it still turned out great. Next time I might cook the mushrooms a touch longer so they’re more caramelized.
Followed the recipe exactly but mine came out a little soggy in the middle. Maybe I didn’t sauté long enough? Otherwise flavor was solid.
Mushrooms are gross. pass!
I was skeptical about the mushrooms, but this turned out surprisingly great. The cheese complements it well!
It was ok, but I think I overcooked it a bit. Next time I’ll watch it more closely.
