English Breakfast

March 24, 2025

An English breakfast is one of the most iconic morning meals in the world. Known for its hearty portions and satisfying mix of savory flavors, this traditional dish has been a staple in British households for generations. It’s not just a breakfast; it’s a full meal that often feels like a celebration of comfort food, perfect for weekends or whenever a filling start to the day is needed.

At the heart of a classic English breakfast are several key components that work together to create a balanced and indulgent plate. These usually include eggs (fried, scrambled, or poached), bacon, sausages, baked beans, grilled tomatoes, mushrooms, and toast or fried bread. Some versions also include black pudding, hash browns, or bubble and squeak, depending on regional preferences and personal taste. The variety of items ensures a satisfying combination of textures and flavors – crispy, creamy, savory, and just a bit sweet from the beans and tomatoes.

One of the reasons the English breakfast is so beloved is its versatility. Each part can be adjusted or substituted to suit different dietary needs. Vegetarian versions swap the meat for veggie sausages or grilled halloumi, while lighter takes might reduce the portions or focus on whole grain toast and sautéed greens. Despite the variations, the core of the meal remains the same – it’s generous, comforting, and delicious.

Traditionally, an English breakfast is served with a cup of strong tea or coffee, and sometimes a glass of juice. It’s perfect for leisurely mornings, brunch gatherings, or as a special treat after a long week. Its popularity has spread far beyond the UK, with cafes and hotels around the world offering their own take on this morning feast.

Whether enjoyed at home or in a cozy diner, an English breakfast brings a sense of tradition and warmth to the table. It’s more than just a meal – it’s a comforting ritual that celebrates the joy of a proper start to the day.

Enjoy a traditional English Breakfast complete with eggs, bacon, sausage, beans, toast, and grilled tomatoes.

This breakfast is just amazing! The crispy bacon and eggs are the best part. Remember to cook the beans carefully!

    1. User avatar felice.hodkiewicz says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! The crispy bacon makes everything better. 😋

    2. User avatar asley.nitzsche41 says:

      3 stars
This sounds good, but what if you overcook the beans? Isn’t that a risk? 🤔

  2. User avatar Falmer Gloomlurker says:

    3 stars
I tried this recipe but my toast burned and I think I used too much oil. It still tasted okay tho.

  3. 4 stars
Pretty straightforward and it actually tastes like a real café breakfast. I didn’t even bother with butter on the toast and it was still great.

  4. User avatar Dwarven Shpere says:

    2 stars
Not sure about this. Fried eggs + beans + sausage together just feels heavy and I don’t love sweet-ish baked beans with everything else.

  5. User avatar carol.runte says:

    3 stars
I don’t get the ‘2 grams eggs’ line… eggs aren’t measured like that lol. I probably used one egg and it was fine. Recipe needs clearer amounts!

    1. 4 stars
I think the author meant 2 *eggs* and the grams got mixed up. Eggs are usually counted, not weighed in recipes like this.

    2. User avatar sibyl.jacobi28 says:

      2 stars
Yeah I was confused too—2 grams eggs sounds like a typo. I’d guess they mean 2 eggs, or “large eggs” by count. Still tastes good though!

  6. User avatar jeramy.ratke says:

    4 stars
This reminded me of my travels to England! Great recipe.

    1. User avatar Mr. Popo says:

I love English breakfasts! Brings back memories. 🥓🍳

    2. User avatar markus.herman78 says:

      3 stars
Looks good, but I never liked baked beans with breakfast. Weird combo.

  7. User avatar Miles Teg says:

    3 stars
I didn’t really like the baked beans… it was too much. Next time I’ll skip them.

  8. User avatar kathern.schamberger says:

    5 stars
Absolutely delicious! My family loved it!

  9. User avatar avis.abbott says:

    4 stars
Super easy to make, but I burnt the toast. Oops!

  10. User avatar carlton.lesch82 says:

    3 stars
Did I need to cook the eggs with a lid on or no? Just curious.

  11. User avatar kim.bogisich says:

    4 stars
    Yum!

    1. 3 stars
Not gonna lie, I always mess up the eggs part… do you scramble or fry yours? Also 2 grams eggs seems way too little lol.

    2. User avatar jed.gorczany says:

      5 stars
Yum indeed! This looks like the perfect hangover breakfast 😄 The beans + crispy bacon combo is unbeatable.

  12. 4 stars
Clean and simple! My kid asked for seconds. I used brown bread and it felt more filling.

  13. User avatar loyd.schultz says:

    4 stars
So simple! I just threw everything in one pan and it actually worked out! 😂

  14. User avatar birdie.ruecker50 says:

    4 stars
This is basically a Full English minus the mushrooms and black pudding. Still delicious, just not fully authentic in my book.

    1. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

      3 stars
Not authentic? If it has bacon, sausage, beans, toast, eggs… that’s pretty much breakfast. Black pudding is overrated (sorry 😅). And mushrooms can be optional depending on who’s cooking.

    2. User avatar sheilah.heaney2021 says:

      4 stars
Totally get what you mean—an English breakfast without mushrooms/black pudding feels a bit “almost.” Still, beans + bacon + sausage + toast is absolutely the core vibe. If it tastes great, I’m in!

  15. User avatar Shirley Knot says:

    4 stars
I swapped in turkey bacon and it still worked. The baked beans + toast combo is honestly the highlight.

  16. User avatar w00d_ch0p says:

    2 stars
Isn’t this just like a fry-up? I can’t believe it has its own recipe lol.

  17. User avatar Nam Frami says:

    4 stars
Tried it and it came out pretty great. Only thing: my eggs stuck to the pan because I didn’t use enough oil. Otherwise 10/10 hangover-proof breakfast.

  18. 3 stars
Too much oil for my taste. Also my toast went cold by the time I plated everything, so I’d time it better.

    1. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

      4 stars
Totally get you—1 tbsp oil can feel like a lot for such a small plate. I usually use just a light swipe of oil or even a couple drops in the egg pan and it works fine.

  19. User avatar joe_banana says:

    3 stars
It’s just a normal breakfast, nothing special. I’ve had better.

  20. User avatar brittany.hoeger38 says:

    5 stars
English breakfast? More like English brunch! 😂 Love it.

  21. User avatar Lumberjack says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid and easy. I used turkey sausage because that’s what I had, and it still worked. Would recommend adding black pepper on top of the eggs.

  22. User avatar jeff.bode4 says:

    1 star
I don’t like beans in breakfast. Yuck!

  23. 5 stars
5 stars! Makes me feel fancy in the morning.

  24. User avatar gregg.heaney51 says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly (mostly). The timing was weird for me though—bacon got done before everything else. I ended up holding beans on low heat and it saved the plate.

    1. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

      5 stars
Yep, bacon always seems to go first 😅 I like to do it in stages too—hold the beans warm and just assemble when everything’s ready.

  25. User avatar mathWizard says:

    5 stars
I followed it exactly and got a great breakfast. The baked beans warm-up step is key. Would 100% make again.

    1. User avatar su.schumm49 says:

      3 stars
Hmm I might be doing the beans too long then 😅 Mine sometimes taste a bit flat. Is it just until hot or do you simmer them? Also, does it matter if I use thicker toast?

    2. User avatar Ice Wraith says:

      5 stars
Glad it worked for you! That baked beans step really does make a difference—nice and hot so everything stays warm. I’ve been meaning to try it again with the same timing.

  26. User avatar juliana.roob says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid instructions, but 2 grams eggs?? That must be a typo. Still tasted good once I used normal large eggs.

    1. User avatar virgil.hermann2021 says:

      5 stars
Yeah 2 grams eggs sounds off 😅 I’m glad you fixed it—usually that would be a whole egg worth of mass, not crumbs. Still, nice that the rest stayed solid.

    2. User avatar Peregrin Took says:

      4 stars
Totally typo. Two grams is like 1/200 of an egg. I used 2 large eggs and it made way more sense—breakfast energy achieved.

  27. User avatar elisha.kihn1995 says:

    5 stars
This was sooo good! The bacon was crispy just like I like it.

    1. 5 stars
I agree! Crispy bacon is the best part of any breakfast! 😋

  28. 5 stars
This is basically my Saturday morning in a plate. Crispy bacon, runny egg, charred tomato… perfect. Would absolutely make again.

    1. User avatar nathanial.abbott says:

      5 stars
Yesss—crispy bacon + runny egg is unbeatable. I also love the charred tomato part. Definitely making this this weekend.

  29. User avatar bulah.williamson57 says:

    3 stars
No mushrooms? No black pudding? That’s not a proper English breakfast, sorry. Still, it tastes like a hearty diner plate.

  30. User avatar tory.sanford says:

    2 stars
Easy recipe but where’s the black pudding? Isn’t that a must for a real English breakfast? 🤔

  31. User avatar ali.lesch says:

    3 stars
Pretty solid, but “2 grams eggs” is throwing me off 😅. I’m assuming you meant 2 eggs or maybe 200g? Still, I’d try it.

  32. User avatar cleveland.borer38 says:

    3 stars
I tried making this but it was a bit too greasy for my taste. I prefer less meat.

  33. 3 stars
Honestly, it tasted like every café breakfast I’ve ever had. Not bad, just not wow. Next time I’ll season the eggs more.

    1. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

      4 stars
Totally get that—English breakfasts can be “fine” without being memorable. A little extra seasoning in the eggs and maybe a pinch of salt on the bacon/beans could turn it around. “Wow” is all about the details 😄

    2. User avatar liberal.hero says:

      3 stars
Bruh I feel u. I did mine once and it was like cafeteria food. Next time I’ll add more salt and maybe some black pepper or even a lil paprika in the eggs. Also toast should be actually golden.

  34. User avatar Charles Darwin says:

    2 stars
Way too much grilling—my tomato got kinda burnt. I think medium heat is not enough for me? I’d add less time next try.

  35. User avatar darell.hickle61 says:

    3 stars
Not bad but I think it’s missing black pudding or mushrooms like the real full English. Otherwise it’s a good “inspired” breakfast.

  36. User avatar marcellus.swift2023 says:

    5 stars
I followed it and used pork sausage—came out perfect. Bacon got really crispy and the beans were a good warm, salty balance.

    1. User avatar janina.leuschke1966 says:

      3 stars
Mine never comes out “perfect” 😅 I think my pan temp runs too hot and the bacon burns before the sausage cooks. Also, do you drain the beans first or just heat the whole can?

    2. User avatar kareen.mitchell2004 says:

      5 stars
Nice! I love when the beans hit that warm/salty balance. Glad the pork sausage worked out too—sounds like you nailed the timing on the bacon.

  37. User avatar jeffry.homenick41 says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, “2 grams eggs” made me laugh 😅 Like… are we sure that’s not a typo? I used 2 eggs anyway and it turned out fine, just letting you know.

  38. User avatar drucilla.gorczany says:

    3 stars
My eggs stuck to the pan even though I added oil. Maybe lower heat or nonstick needed. Still tasty overall.

  39. 5 stars
This was the best breakfast I’ve ever made! Felt like I was in England! ❤️

  40. User avatar joana.schultz88 says:

    5 stars
Absolutely love this. The tomato slightly charred with oil is the key. I served mine with toast and it tasted like a greasy spoon, in a good way.

  41. User avatar margherita.ledner83 says:

    4 stars
I’m skeptical about grilling the tomato in the same pan as the meat—seems messy. But I tried it and it actually tastes good.

    1. User avatar marlon.streich says:

      5 stars
I get the mess concern, but yeah—tomato + meat drippings is kind of the whole magic. Char it a bit and it tastes way better than plain.

  42. 5 stars
This is exactly the kind of hearty breakfast I crave on weekends. The tomatoes charred a bit is such a nice touch with the beans.

    1. User avatar theo.goldner says:

      3 stars
Sounds good but 2 grams eggs? That seems tiny—like 1 egg is way more than that 😅 I’d still try it though. Also baked beans in a can = the real secret flavor.

    2. 5 stars
Yes!! The charred tomatoes really make it feel “full English” and not just beans on toast. Weekend breakfast goals.

  43. User avatar Shayne Bashirian says:

    5 stars
This is comfort food at its best. The bacon gets perfectly crispy, and the charred tomato makes a huge difference.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—crispy bacon + that charred tomato is the whole vibe of an English breakfast. I do the tomato a tiny bit longer though, love it almost smoky.

  44. 5 stars
I made it with pork sausages and it came out great. Bacon got crispy, beans heated through, and everything tasted balanced.

    1. 5 stars
That sounds spot on—pork sausages + crispy bacon is the dream combo. 🔥 Glad the beans and tomato balanced it out too!

  45. User avatar Ms. Ivan Kemmer says:

    1 star
Sausage too chewy, I couldn’t eat it. Sorry not sorry.

    1. 4 stars
I totally get it! I had the same issue with chewy sausage before. Maybe try a different brand next time?

    2. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

      2 stars
Chewy? Like, is that even a thing? I found mine fine. Maybe you cooked it too long or something?

  46. User avatar shayne.romaguera16 says:

    4 stars
Sausage was cooked fine, bacon crisped up nicely. I like how you use the same pan for tomato—saves time and flavors. Great for a lazy weekend breakfast.

    1. User avatar Colin the Security Robot says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—using the same pan for the tomato makes it taste way better. Lazy weekend breakfasts are the best. 😄

  47. 3 stars
Pretty solid, but 2 grams eggs?? 😅 That can’t be right unless you mean 2 eggs. Still, flavors sound great.

  48. 5 stars
This is basically my comfort-food breakfast. The charred tomato is a nice touch—makes it feel like a proper diner plate.

  49. 3 stars
Honestly, this feels a little bland without seasoning. I used salt/pepper and a little chili sauce and it improved a lot.

  50. User avatar lahoma.wiza3 says:

    5 stars
The baked beans part is the best. I added a pinch of pepper and it really elevated the whole plate. Easy and comforting.

    1. 4 stars
Sounds good, but I’m skeptical about the “easy” part 😂 I always mess up the eggs. Still, baked beans + charred tomato is a solid combo. Might try with pepper like you said.

    2. User avatar marisa.barton1963 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—the baked beans make it. I add a tiny bit of smoked paprika too and it’s next-level comfort.

  51. 5 stars
Five stars for convenience. I can do this in one morning without stressing. Also the toast + beans combo is elite.

    1. User avatar Frost Giant says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—this is the kind of breakfast that feels doable even when you’re not trying too hard. The toast + beans combo is honestly elite.

  52. User avatar barbra.flatley67 says:

    4 stars
Simple and comforting. I used pork sausage and it came out great. The baked beans add that classic sweet-salty vibe.

  53. User avatar emilie.hauck1964 says:

    5 stars
    Easy and filling. Boom.

    1. User avatar kylie.koch44 says:

      5 stars
Totally—this is my kind of breakfast. Crispy bacon + beans + toast is a guaranteed win. 😄

  54. User avatar courtney.goodwin2025 says:

    2 stars
1 can baked beans is a cop-out honestly. Like just say “beans” and we’re good. 😅

  55. User avatar stacy.boehm12 says:

    2 stars
I’m skeptical about the whole “2 grams eggs” thing. Also I tried butter on the toast but it got too greasy. Still edible though.

    1. User avatar Draugr Scourge says:

      2 stars
Yeah 2 grams eggs sounds… wild 😅 Like even a small egg is way more than that. I’d guess it’s meant to be 2 eggs or “2 large eggs”? Also grease on toast is real—maybe toast first and add butter only at the end, or use less butter / a dryer pan.

  56. User avatar vernell.lang34 says:

    5 stars
This is my exact kind of comfort food. The tomato char + beans together is such a good combo. I used beef sausage and fried the eggs over easy—perfect breakfast.

  57. 2 stars
Seems a bit too much work for breakfast. Also, baked beans with toast feels weird to me, but I guess it’s traditional. Might be okay with brunch vibes.

    1. User avatar shona.kreiger says:

      4 stars
Fair point—this is more of a full-on brunch plate than a quick breakfast. But the beans + toast combo is pretty classic (and it saves you from missing “the good bits”).

  58. User avatar lilli.little59 says:

    4 stars
Beans in a breakfast plate always feels weird to me, but honestly they worked with the bacon and tomato. Surprised!

  59. 2 stars
Why cook the eggs in a separate pan if you’re already using one? Seems like extra dishes for no reason.

    1. User avatar kasey.kovacek9 says:

      4 stars
I get why it feels wasteful, but eggs behave differently than bacon/sausage. They stick and can overcook fast, so a separate pan helps you control the doneness.

  60. User avatar Luetta Schroeder says:

    4 stars
Kinda bland for my taste. I added Worcestershire sauce to the beans and a pinch of salt to the tomatoes. After that it was way better.

  61. User avatar elidia.lockman73 says:

    2 stars
I’m skeptical about grilling the tomato right in the same pan—won’t it mess up the bacon grease taste? I separated mine and it was great, but I’d keep an eye on it.

  62. User avatar bennie.barrows says:

    1 star
Just want to confirm – is it really 2 grams of eggs? Seems super tiny??

  63. User avatar gordon.hane says:

    3 stars
Ehh, I don’t get the fuss. Just a fry-up, right? Not bad but doesn’t live up to the hype.

  64. 3 stars
I followed it mostly, but my bacon burned a little because my pan runs hot. Still, the overall flavor is solid. Next time I’ll lower the heat sooner.

    1. User avatar tresa.casper1956 says:

      3 stars
Burned bacon is kinda tragic 😅 but at least it didn’t ruin everything. I always move mine off sooner even if it’s not “crispy” yet. What temp you on? Mine sets at medium and still browns fast.

    2. 5 stars
Yeah, pans run HOT—English breakfast is forgiving though. Lowering the heat a bit earlier is exactly the move. Glad the flavor still came out solid!

  65. User avatar yang.reichert says:

    4 stars
Instructions are clear and the steps actually make sense. I like cooking tomato in the same pan—less dishes!

  66. 4 stars
Way too salty for my taste with the beans + bacon. Next time I’ll rinse the baked beans and maybe swap to turkey bacon. Still delicious though.

  67. 2 stars
Not gonna lie, I didn’t have half the ingredients. Substituted bacon with ham and it was meh.

  68. 5 stars
I added some mushrooms too and it was DELISH! Def making this again!

  69. 5 stars
This is exactly the kind of hearty breakfast I crave. The step about charring the tomato is a game changer—tastes so much more “pub-like” than just boiling everything.

  70. 5 stars
English breakfast is the best! Everything just goes together perfectly.

    1. 2 stars
Yeah, but I think it’s just too much food in the morning. A simple bowl of cereal would do!

    2. 5 stars
I totally agree! The combination of flavors is just unbeatable, especially with some toast on the side!

  71. User avatar glory.batz2 says:

    4 stars
Didn’t have all the ingredients, so I used turkey bacon and added some mushrooms. Still turned out yummy! 😋

  72. User avatar lorrie.anderson2 says:

    2 stars
Baked beans in the morning? I know people love it, but it just feels odd to me. Might be better with less bean sauce.

    1. 4 stars
Honestly breakfast baked beans are a classic here—love the sauce with toast. But yeah, if you find it too much, using a smaller portion or warming them with a splash of water/tomato helps mellow it out.

  73. User avatar marisol.boehm says:

    2 stars
Ugh, why put beans with breakfast? That’s super weird. 🤨

  74. User avatar maria.hintz7 says:

    4 stars
So simple. I made it in like 20 mins. Toast got a bit too dark but the rest was perfect. 😅

    1. User avatar Zarniwoop says:

      3 stars
Nice! I always burn my toast too… maybe lower the heat next time. Also, is it 2 grams eggs? That seems super tiny lol—did you mean 2 eggs?

    2. User avatar rudolf.hamill1975 says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome—20 mins is fast for an English breakfast! 😄 Sorry about the toast, but the rest sounds spot on.

  75. User avatar tracy.jakubowski52 says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but my eggs stuck like crazy in the pan. Next time I’ll use nonstick or lower the heat. Also, “2 grams eggs” feels wrong—probably meant 2 eggs?

    1. User avatar neida.hartmann0 says:

      5 stars
Yeah that makes sense—eggs sticking is usually pan temp or not enough oil. I’ll update the instructions to suggest medium-low and a bit more fat (or a nonstick pan). And you’re right: “2 grams eggs” is definitely a typo—should be 2 eggs.

  76. 5 stars
    Bacon + eggs = win. 10/10. done.

    1. 5 stars
Honestly, I agree—bacon + eggs is hard to beat. Love that you went simple and nailed it. 🍳🥓

  77. User avatar marvin.russel says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about cooking the tomato in the same pan as bacon fat (even if it’s ‘a little’). It turned out fine though—more like smoky than gross.

    1. User avatar barton.altenwerth1955 says:

      5 stars
Totally get the skepticism. Bacon fat + tomato sounds like it could get weird, but smoky/charred is actually kind of the whole point for a fry-up. Glad it worked out!

This is such a solid comfort breakfast. The crispy bacon + charred tomato combo is legit. I used pork sausage and fried the eggs—no notes, would make again.

Pretty solid recipe, but 2 grams eggs?? That’s not eggs, that’s like a dusting 😅 I figured you meant 2 eggs. Still tasted great after fixing that.

LOL yeah 2 grams sounds like a typo 😄 Glad you caught it—2 eggs makes way more sense. What style did you end up making them, scrambled or fried?

I’m skeptical about frying everything in the same pan—won’t it get too greasy? Mine did, but I still ate it… so it’s probably fine lol.
