Chocolate Chip Belgian Waffles

January 2, 2026

Chocolate Chip Belgian Waffles are the ultimate treat when you want something cozy, indulgent, and still comforting enough for breakfast or brunch. With their crisp golden exterior and soft, fluffy center, Belgian waffles are already a favorite, but adding chocolate chips takes them to a whole new level of deliciousness.

What makes Belgian waffles special is their light texture and deep pockets, perfect for holding melted chocolate, syrup, or whipped cream. The batter is typically richer than regular waffles, often made with milk, eggs, and a touch of butter for extra tenderness. When chocolate chips are folded in, they gently melt as the waffles cook, creating little pockets of warm chocolate in every bite.

Making chocolate chip Belgian waffles at home is easier than it sounds. The key is not to overmix the batter. Stir just until the ingredients are combined to keep the waffles airy and light. Semi sweet chocolate chips work beautifully, offering a balanced sweetness, but dark chocolate chips add a deeper, more intense flavor. For a sweeter option, milk chocolate chips are always a crowd pleaser, especially for kids.

These waffles are perfect for slow weekend mornings, brunch gatherings, or even a fun breakfast for special occasions. Serve them fresh off the waffle iron with a dusting of powdered sugar, a drizzle of maple syrup, or a dollop of whipped cream. Fresh berries or sliced bananas pair wonderfully with the chocolate, adding freshness and color to the plate.

Chocolate chip Belgian waffles are also surprisingly versatile. You can keep them classic or customize them with a pinch of cinnamon butter, a splash of vanilla ice cream, or even a handful of chopped nuts for extra texture. Leftover waffles can be frozen and reheated in the toaster, making them a convenient option for busy mornings without sacrificing flavor.

Whether enjoyed as a sweet breakfast, a brunch centerpiece, or a dessert style treat, chocolate chip Belgian waffles always feel special. Warm, comforting, and filled with melted chocolate, they bring a little joy to the table and turn an ordinary morning into something memorable.

Waffles, why don’t they call them pancake sandwich???

    1. User avatar Elmo Ferry says:

      4 stars
That’s an interesting thought! But I think waffles are their own unique thing. Plus, who wants to stack syrupy pancakes on top? 😂

Made these this morning and they were crisp on the outside, fluffy inside. The chocolate chips stayed nicely distributed—no weird sinking. Great recipe!

Is it really necessary to sift the flour? I never do that with pancakes.

  11. User avatar joe.okeefe1985 says:

Just gave it a shot, and wow, they were FANTASTIC! Will be making them again for sure. 5 stars!

I dunno, sounds too sweet for me. Aren’t Belgian waffles often crispy or something? Not sure about the texture with all that chocolate.

so easy and yum! my kids loved these waffles. they can’t stop eating them!

  14. User avatar tonette.kunde61 says:

My batter looked thin like crepe batter, but when it cooked it turned out fine. I was worryin’ for nothing.

  15. 2 stars
Just 8 out of 10 from me. Too sweet for my taste—would cut sugar or use less chips. But breakfast vibes.

  16. User avatar hubert.cole says:

    2 stars
I added extra vanilla cuz why not… then it tasted like cake batter, not waffles?? Still ate it tho 😂

  17. User avatar Orange Dartwing says:

    5 stars
These waffles were heavenly! Chocolate and waffles, what’s not to love? Definitely a 5!

  18. User avatar taylor.rogahn93 says:

    3 stars
I thought Belgian waffles were supposed to be crispy. Maybe I’m doing it wrong? But they taste fine.

  19. 3 stars
After reading the recipe, I got a bit confused. Can you use self-rising flour instead? No clue if that works.

    1. 2 stars
I dunno if that would work. I tried using self-rising in a pancake recipe once, and it turned out weird. Maybe stick to the all-purpose flour?

    2. 5 stars
Yes, you can use self-rising flour! Just don’t add the baking powder, since it’s already in the self-rising flour. Good luck!

  20. User avatar Mr. Prosser says:

I love waffles, but this is too much work. Just go to a restaurant!

    1. 5 stars
Nah! Making em at home is way better than resturants! You can add any toppings you want plus they are fresh!

    2. User avatar Duncan Idaho says:

I get what you mean! Sometimes it’s just easier to grab a bite at a diner. But these waffles sound delicious!

  21. User avatar armando.prohaska says:

Mine stuck to the waffle iron a little, even though I greased it. Maybe the iron wasn’t fully hot. Any tips? Otherwise, they tasted great.

    1. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

      5 stars
Yeah, that usually means either the iron wasn’t fully preheated or the batter’s sitting too long. Try preheating longer (give it 5–10 extra minutes), and make sure it’s genuinely hot before the first pour. Also, greasing lightly right before each batch helps—too much can make them stick.

    2. 4 stars
Mine did that once… I used butter to grease tho and it kinda burned. Like, maybe let the melted butter cool a bit? Idk lol. I switched to a neutral spray and it stopped sticking. Also make sure you don’t open it early—wait till they’re golden or it’ll tear.

  22. 2 stars
I tried making these but they turned out super soggy. Maybe my waffle iron is broken? Idk.

  23. User avatar Reanna Walter says:

    5 stars
5 stars cuz easy. i add more chips lol

    1. User avatar milan.kuhic says:

      5 stars
Haha same—more chips is always the move 😄 Easy and still tastes amazing!

  24. User avatar rossana.tromp says:

    3 stars
My batter stuck to the waffle iron even though I greased it. Could be my iron, but I felt like there should be a better prep tip. Flavor was good.

    1. User avatar Samwise Gamgee says:

      3 stars
Maybe you used too much milk? Or butter not hot enough? Mine never sticks if I spray and then put the lid down like right away. But if your waffle iron is old, yeah the coating could be done. I once cleaned mine with soap and it got worse lol. Flavor being good is a win though.

    2. User avatar Galadriel says:

      4 stars
I’ve had that happen too. Even with greasing, if the iron isn’t fully preheated (or the batter sits too long), it can glue to the plates. I usually lightly oil, then wipe any excess—sounds silly but it helps a lot. Also, do you let it rest for a minute before pouring? That can change the texture.

  25. 4 stars
I followed the recipe pretty closely, but my batter seemed a little thick—maybe my milk was colder than I thought. Still tasted great, just needed a slightly longer cook time.

  26. 5 stars
These came out super fluffy and the chocolate chips stayed perfectly melty. I followed the “don’t overmix” tip and it really matters—great recipe!

  27. 2 stars
Chocolate in breakfast? That’s almost blasphemy! But I guess they’re kinda good if you like sweet stuff.

  28. User avatar sharita.block30 says:

    3 stars
The batter seems a little thick for my waffle iron—like paste. I had to add a splash more milk to spread it. Anyone else?

  29. User avatar tanner.mclaughlin26 says:

    2 stars
I think the butter amount is off… 1/3 cup seems too much and mine got greasy. Maybe I melted it too hot? Either way, the taste was decent.

  30. 4 stars
Waffles? Who needs ’em? I prefer pancakes any day. But my kids loved these.

    1. User avatar Otto Graf says:

      4 stars
Pancakes are great, but Waffles are too! They hold syrup better! Glad your kids enjoyed ’em!

    2. User avatar darwin.franecki53 says:

      3 stars
I dunno, waffles just seem too extra. Like, why not just have pancakes? But if the kids liked it, cool.

  31. User avatar cristobal.graham says:

    5 stars
These came out super crispy on the outside and fluffy inside—exactly what I want from Belgian waffles. The chocolate chips stayed perfectly distributed too. Will make again!

  32. 5 stars
Sooo easy. I made it at night after work and it was still golden and crispy by the time my partner got home. Great comfort food.

    1. User avatar ela.erdman says:

      5 stars
Yes! I love when they come out golden and crisp even if you’re cooking late—comfort food win. 😄 What toppings did you use?

  33. User avatar josef.abshire50 says:

    5 stars
I added some whipped cream on top, and wow! This is my new favorite breakfast!

  34. 3 stars
The batter was thick like cookie dough. I added a splash more milk and it cooked better. If you’re unsure, trust the waffle iron texture and adjust a little.

  35. User avatar milo.haley32 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about “Belgian” because the batter seems kinda simple. But wow—golden and flavorful. Vanilla + chips is a win.

    1. 4 stars
Mine was good, but I think I overmixed a bit (oops). Still tasted great tho—golden on the outside, chocolatey in the middle. Next time I’ll be more careful with step 4.

    2. User avatar allen.hartmann says:

      5 stars
I totally get the skepticism—Belgian sounds like it should be fancier than that batter list. But mine came out super crisp outside and fluffy inside too. The vanilla definitely helps the chocolate chips taste “baked-in.”

  36. User avatar keiko.berge75 says:

    3 stars
I don’t have a waffle iron (yet) so I tried cooking it on a skillet… they turned out like thick pancakes. Still tasty though.

  37. 3 stars
Too much sugar for my taste. Next time I’ll cut it down. Still, they were decent.

  38. User avatar Falmer Spellsword says:

    5 stars
These waffles are AMAZING! So fluffy and the chocolate chips add the perfect touch.

    1. User avatar silas.leannon1970 says:

      2 stars
But what if I don’t like chocolate chips? Can I just leave them out? Seems weird to add them to waffles.

    2. User avatar leandro.wisoky1996 says:

      5 stars
I agree! These waffles are the best! I made them for my kids and they loved them! Fluffy is the word!

I love waffles too! Can’t wait to try this recipe.

  40. User avatar scottie.davis says:

    5 stars
These turned out so crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. The chocolate chips stayed perfectly gooey—will definitely make again.

    1. User avatar emil.schulist says:

      5 stars
Yes!! I had the same result—crispy outside, soft center. I also loved that the chips didn’t harden too much. Made them with maple syrup and it was perfect.

    2. User avatar carroll.nader1960 says:

      3 stars
Might be me, but mine didn’t get super crispy… I think I maybe overmixed? Also I used dark chocolate chips and they kinda melted weird. Still tasty though.

  41. User avatar steve_maga says:

    2 stars
I had a hard time getting them to cook evenly. Maybe my waffle iron is old? Not sure if I’ll try again.

  42. User avatar karleen.boyer1978 says:

    4 stars
Yum! Just made these and my kids loved them! We had some berries on top. Will recommend to friends!

That’s awesome to hear! Adding berries sounds like a great idea. It’s always nice when kids enjoy a meal!

  43. User avatar kristen.kuvalis1983 says:

    5 stars
These were fluffy on the inside and crisp outside—exactly what I want from Belgian waffles. The chocolate chips stayed evenly distributed too. Will make again.

  44. User avatar Wispmother says:

    3 stars
Too many eggs! I think it could be better with just one? And where’s the whipped cream recipe?

    1. User avatar maximina.strosin says:

      4 stars
I think two eggs is fine! It gives them a good texture. And whipped cream? Just whip some cream and add sugar, it’s easy! 😄

  45. User avatar Wispmother says:

    5 stars
Yum! Just right with syrup. Even my kids loved them!

  46. 4 stars
I don’t have a waffle maker but I made pancakes with the same mix and they were great!

    1. 5 stars
That’s awesome! Pancakes are great too! I love chocolate chips in them. 😍

  47. 5 stars
These waffles were amazing! The chocolate chips just made them 10 times better. Will definitely make again!

  48. User avatar aja.langworth says:

    5 stars
These came out perfectly golden and fluffy! The Belgian-style texture is real. The chocolate chips stayed suspended too, which I usually mess up.

  49. User avatar andrew.klocko says:

    5 stars
These waffles turned out amazing! So fluffy and chocolatey! Will definitely make them again.

  50. User avatar trent.kozey says:

    4 stars
Waffles with chocolate chips? Heck yeah! My kids loved them! Easy to make too.

  51. User avatar leilani.tremblay28 says:

    3 stars
Mine stuck a little even though I greased the iron. Maybe I needed more butter? Flavor was there, but presentation was rough lol.

    1. User avatar basementDweller says:

      4 stars
Ugh yeah, that happens with waffles sometimes. Even with greasing, if the iron isn’t fully preheated or you don’t use enough fat in the batter, they can cling. I’d try preheating longer and maybe adding a tiny bit more butter/melted fat next time (or lightly brush the iron between batches).

  52. 4 stars
I followed it pretty close, but I might’ve overmixed at step 4 because I was impatient 😅 Still tasted great, just slightly less airy. Toppings hid the flaws.

    1. User avatar augustus.hermann66 says:

      5 stars
Oh that makes sense—overmixing can definitely knock the airiness down. Glad it still tasted great though! 😄 What toppings did you use?

    2. 3 stars
I always mix a bit more “for safety” lol. If yours were less airy but still good, I’m taking that as permission to be slightly reckless next time. Also, are your chocolate chips supposed to sink? Mine always do.

  53. User avatar Goron Elder says:

    4 stars
Ya’ll, this was so easy! I didn’t have chocolate chips, so I used blueberries instead, yum!

  54. User avatar norberto.schumm25 says:

    5 stars
    Five stars. Easy.

    1. User avatar herman.braun21 says:

      5 stars
Easy and turns out so good! The waffle iron instructions usually scare me but this was straightforward.

  55. 5 stars
I’m skeptical about “do not overmix” because I always mix everything… but I tried it and the waffle texture was noticeably better. So yeah, you’re right.

  56. User avatar halflife4 says:

    4 stars
My waffle iron is ancient and I wasn’t sure how long to cook them. A bit burnt, but still tasty!

  57. 3 stars
Mine stuck to the waffle iron even though I greased it. Might be my iron or I didn’t preheat long enough. Flavor was okay, but texture was a little dense.

  58. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, I’m skeptical about the “don’t overmix” part because I always mix and it still works. This time I under-mixed and the texture was weirdly dense—still good, but… yeah.

  59. 5 stars
    Yummy!! 🍫🥞

  60. User avatar dortha.frami says:

    4 stars
Used oat milk instead of regular milk (and added a tiny bit less), still good! Not identical, but the kids loved them.

    1. User avatar cathleen.haley75 says:

      3 stars
Hmm I tried oat milk in waffles once and they got kinda gummy for me. Maybe I overmixed or my waffle iron runs hot. Did you change anything else besides the milk amount?

    2. User avatar dominique.kunze says:

      5 stars
Oh nice! Oat milk waffles sound like a great swap. I bet the kids loved that cozy flavor. 😊 I’m gonna try it next time.

  61. User avatar Emily Saunders says:

    4 stars
The texture was great, but I think I overmixed a bit because my first batch came out a little tough. Still tasty though. Next time I’ll be more careful.

  62. User avatar june.buckridge1993 says:

    3 stars
I accidentally overmixed (oops) and they turned out a bit tough. Still edible, but definitely less fluffy. Lesson learned.

  63. User avatar halflife4 says:

    2 stars
Why is it called Belgian waffles? Are they really from Belgium? I thought they were from America…

  64. User avatar Ms. Darnell Armstrong says:

    5 stars
These were super crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. The chocolate chips stayed melty instead of burning. Will make again for sure!

  65. User avatar sebastian.willms82 says:

    5 stars
I made these for brunch and everyone asked for the recipe. The instructions are straightforward and the quantities feel really reliable.

  66. User avatar tatum.stark says:

    5 stars
The vanilla + melted butter smell while cooking is unreal. I used dark chocolate chips and it was a win. Next time I’ll try adding a pinch more salt though.

  67. User avatar shaina.rau says:

    3 stars
Mine stuck to the iron a bit even though I greased it. Maybe I didn’t wait long enough to preheat the waffle iron? They tasted good though, so I’ll troubleshoot.

    1. User avatar lucky777 says:

      5 stars
That could totally be the preheat/temperature thing—if the iron isn’t hot enough yet, batter kind of grabs onto the surface. Also, melted butter can sometimes make a light “film” that isn’t as nonstick as a dedicated cooking spray. Next time try preheating until it’s fully ready (wait for the indicator light/buzzer), and grease lightly but evenly. Glad they still tasted good though!

  68. User avatar Gag Halfrunt says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about “do not overmix” because I always mix stuff. But following it helped a lot—less chewy, more light. I’d make again.

  69. User avatar xenia.blick2014 says:

    2 stars
I followed the recipe but mine came out too dry. Maybe I overmixed? Not very happy with how they turned out.

  70. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

    4 stars
Really good, but I think 1.5 cups milk felt a bit too much for my batter—ended up thinner than expected. Still tasted amazing though. Next time I’ll slightly reduce the milk.

  71. User avatar Future Trunks says:

    3 stars
I’m giving it a 3 because my batter seemed thick like cookie dough. I added a splash more milk and it worked, but the recipe didn’t mention batter consistency.

    1. User avatar Slaughterfish says:

      4 stars
Mine was thick too 😅 I didn’t think it would matter, but I just added more milk like you did. Also maybe your butter was too hot? Mine kind of cooked the eggs a bit once and it threw everything off. Next time I’ll let it cool. Still tasty though—would make again.

    2. User avatar denisha.dach67 says:

      4 stars
That’s a super fair point. This batter should be pourable but still slightly thick—kind of like pancake batter, not cookie dough. I’ve found the same thing: if you overmix or use flour that’s a bit packed, it thickens up fast. A splash more milk is exactly the fix. Maybe the recipe just needs a consistency note.

  72. User avatar gita.lang says:

    3 stars
They turned out okay, but I felt there was too much sugar. Next time I might cut it down a bit.

    1. User avatar James Strosin says:

      4 stars
I think the sugar is part of what makes these waffles so good! But you do you! 🙂

  73. User avatar wallaby says:

    2 stars
It took too long to wash the waffle iron afterward. I might stick to store-bought.

  74. User avatar sonya.roberts51 says:

    4 stars
Quick question: does the batter need to rest? I didn’t and they were fine, but I feel like resting might make them even lighter. Otherwise, pretty solid.

    1. User avatar isabel.casper says:

      5 stars
Good quick question! Resting isn’t strictly required since you’re using baking powder (so you’ll still get lift), but letting the batter sit 5–10 minutes can help the flour hydrate and sometimes makes the waffles a bit lighter/fluffier. Since you mixed just until combined, you probably did fine—next time you can try a short rest and see if you notice a difference.

    2. User avatar donnell.bahringer92 says:

      4 stars
I usually skip the rest too and they come out fine. If I remember, I’ll let it sit like 10 min while the waffle iron heats. But honestly, overthinking it—if you don’t overmix, you’re good. Mine were crispy on the outside either way.

  75. User avatar toney.pacocha15 says:

    2 stars
I followed the recipe but my waffles came out flat. What did I do wrong? 😕

  76. 5 stars
Absolutely delicious! The waffles were fluffy and the chocolate chips added the perfect touch. Will be making these again for sure!

    1. 5 stars
I’m so glad you loved it! The fluffy waffles are the best, right? Can’t wait to try them again myself! 😊

    2. User avatar joe_banana says:

      3 stars
These waffles sound good, but are they really better than just getting them from a restaurant? 🤔

  77. 3 stars
Not bad, but they tasted a bit too buttery for me. Maybe next time I’ll use cooking spray instead.

Why do people add milk? I always just use water for waffle batters. Seems easier. Not sure about this.

Milk makes the waffles fluffier and richer! Water just makes them kinda flat. Give it a try, you might be surprised!

Honestly, I was skeptical about Belgian waffles from a simple batter, but wow. Crispy outside, soft inside. Vanilla + butter combo is on point.

I think 2 teaspoons baking powder is too much? Mine puffed up like crazy and tasted a bit powdery. Might be my baking powder strength though.

Yeah, that makes sense. If yours puffed way too hard and got a powdery taste, it could totally be the baking powder or even measuring level. I’d try 1 1/2 tsp next time and make sure it’s fresh (and not old/extra-strong). Also, overmixing can mess with texture, but the powdery flavor usually points to the leavening.
