Chicken Rissoles

September 26, 2025

Chicken rissoles are a classic comfort food that bring warmth and nostalgia to the table. These golden, pan-fried patties are crisp on the outside, juicy and tender on the inside, and full of savory flavor in every bite. Traditionally made with ground chicken, breadcrumbs, and a handful of herbs and seasonings, rissoles are simple yet satisfying – the kind of dish that feels like home. They’re versatile enough to serve with a fresh salad for a light meal or alongside mashed potatoes and gravy for something heartier.

One of the things that makes chicken rissoles so beloved is their adaptability. You can keep them basic with just onion, garlic, and parsley, or load them up with grated vegetables like zucchini or carrot for extra moisture and nutrition. Some cooks add a touch of cheese for richness, while others mix in spices like paprika or cumin for a flavor twist. No matter how you make them, the result is always the same: tender, flavorful patties that are deeply comforting and endlessly versatile.

Rissoles also shine when it comes to serving options. They’re delicious fresh from the pan, but they’re just as good tucked into a soft roll with lettuce and aioli for a casual burger-style meal. They pair beautifully with classic sides like roasted vegetables, coleslaw, or rice, and they make a fantastic addition to lunchboxes because they’re just as tasty cold as they are hot. Their simplicity makes them a crowd-pleaser for family dinners, picnics, or casual gatherings.

Beyond their flavor, chicken rissoles capture the essence of home cooking: comforting, approachable, and satisfying. They’re a reminder that delicious meals don’t have to be complicated, just thoughtfully seasoned and cooked with care. Whether you’re making them as a quick weeknight dinner, meal-prepping for the week ahead, or serving them to friends and family, chicken rissoles are a timeless dish that always delivers on both taste and comfort. With their crispy exterior, juicy center, and endless versatility, they’re sure to become a staple in any kitchen.

I’m not sure about this recipe. The mixture was too wet. Anyone else have that problem?

Taste like cardboard. I followed the recipe exactly but they came out bland. 😒

I just, um, don’t know how to make rissoles. I made meatballs instead. 😂

  7. User avatar Dr. Christopher Kuphal says:

I tried this recipe, but the rissoles fell apart while cooking. Maybe too much egg?

  8. 5 stars
These rissoles were so tasty! My whole family loved them. Will definitely make again!

  9. 2 stars
My rissoles kinda fell apart at first 😅 I think I didn’t flatten enough or I didn’t mix thoroughly. Still tasted great though. Second batch was better.

  10. 4 stars
Super easy and fast! I added some cheese in the middle and it was awesome! 😋

  11. 4 stars
Tastes great but how can I make them spicier? Need some heat in my life!

  12. User avatar chelsey.block2001 says:

    3 stars
Mine fell apart! I must’ve messed up the egg or something. So frustrating.

Idk why but my fam didn’t like it. Thought chicken would be better. 🙁

Maybe try adding more seasoning? My kids loved it when I put in some extra spices!

Yikes! I thought it was supposed to be crispy but mine came out soggy. Maybe too much oil?

  15. 5 stars
Rissoles = YAAAAAAS. My new favorite. So good, thanks for sharing!

  16. 2 stars
I don’t know about this recipe… it seems kinda boring. Anyone tried adding spices?

  17. 3 stars
Chicken should be cooked at a higher temp, right? I feel like they took forever…

    1. User avatar belkis.swift81 says:

      4 stars
I don’t think that’s the problem. Medium heat should be perfect! Maybe you just need to give them more time.

    2. 5 stars
Higher temp? No way! Cooking chicken too fast can make it dry. Just follow the recipe!

  18. User avatar rosalind.schmitt71 says:

    3 stars
Not sure about the breadcrumb amount—mine felt a bit dry after cooking. If I make again I’ll try a little more egg or mix in some grated zucchini for moisture.

  19. User avatar juliann.abbott98 says:

    5 stars
These chicken rissoles are fantastic! So juicy and flavorful. Gonna make them again for sure!

    1. 5 stars
I’m glad you liked them! They’re a family favorite in my house too. What do you serve them with?

    2. User avatar marti.abbott2013 says:

      3 stars
They sound good, but I wonder if they’ll be too dry. Aren’t rissoles usually made with beef?

  20. 4 stars
I like that it’s straightforward, but 1/2 cup breadcrumbs feels a bit low for me? I added more and they firmed up. Also, fresh parsley is a must.

  21. User avatar yasmin.huel says:

    4 stars
Honestly pretty solid. I was worried about 4-5 minutes per side, but mine came out cooked through. Next time I’ll mince the onion smaller so the texture is more uniform.

    1. User avatar gonzalo.dickinson says:

      5 stars
Good to hear! I’m with you—4–5 min can feel fast. I usually grate the onion so it blends in completely, and the texture comes out super even.

    2. User avatar Photographer says:

      3 stars
I tried once and mine was kinda meh… I think my pan was too hot? They browned way before the inside was done. I guess mincing the onion smaller might help, but I also add a splash of water sometimes lol.

  22. User avatar tracy.gerlach91 says:

    3 stars
Ehh. Ground chicken is always tricky for me. These tasted fine, but the rissoles felt a little bland without any sauce.

    1. User avatar Frost Giant says:

      5 stars
Totally get that—rissoles can come out a bit dry or plain if you don’t have a sauce. A quick pan sauce (like a splash of chicken stock + splash of lemon/worcestershire) or even gravy would probably fix it.

  23. User avatar bev.russel90 says:

    5 stars
Made these tonight—super easy and they held together really well. Golden on the outside, juicy inside. I added a squeeze of lemon at the end and it popped!

    1. User avatar liberal.hero says:

      3 stars
I made these once but mine were a bit dry 😕 Maybe I overcooked them. Do you think squeezing lemon at the end could help with dryness too, or is it more for flavor only?

    2. User avatar Isela Bosco says:

      5 stars
Love hearing they actually held together! I’m always scared rissoles will fall apart. The lemon pop sounds amazing—adding acid at the end makes them taste brighter.

  24. 5 stars
Yum! So easy to make, I just changed the chicken for turkey. Still good!

  25. User avatar San Shenlong says:

    4 stars
The ingredient list is super simple, which I like. I’d probably add a pinch of paprika next time for a little color and warmth.

  26. User avatar walton.cremin84 says:

    4 stars
Solid recipe, but I had to add a splash of water because my mix felt a bit dry. Otherwise patties held up nicely and tasted great.

  27. User avatar carlee.lynch87 says:

    3 stars
I don’t know, maybe I did something wrong, but mine turned out kinda dry. Should I add more oil or something?

  28. User avatar jayna.nienow says:

    4 stars
Very good! Also i forgot garlic once and it was sad lol, but with garlic it’s a win. Easy weeknight meal.

    1. User avatar Bill Board says:

      5 stars
Haha garlic “oops” is so real 😂 Glad it worked out with the garlic though—rissoles sound perfect for a quick weeknight.

  29. User avatar nicolas.labadie2018 says:

    5 stars
The garlic and onion smell while cooking is unreal. I was tempted to eat them straight from the pan 😅. 10/10 would recommend.

    1. User avatar Gail Andrews says:

      4 stars
I tried this and they were good, but I think mine needed a bit longer than 4–5 min on each side. Also I used garlic powder cuz I didnt have enough garlic… still tasty though!

    2. User avatar vanetta.wolf37 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—my kitchen smells like a legit deli while these are cooking 😄. I always end up stealing a little breadcrumb-buttered corner off the pan too.

  30. 3 stars
Flavor is nice, but mine turned out a little dry. I think I overcooked or my chicken was too lean. Also breadcrumbs absorbed a lot—maybe I should add a splash of water next time?

  31. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

    4 stars
Tried these with turkey instead of chicken. Turned out okay, but the texture was a little softer. Still a decent meal.

    1. User avatar dino.oberbrunner74 says:

      4 stars
Good to know! I’ve swapped in turkey before too and noticed it can get a bit softer—maybe adding a touch more breadcrumbs would help with the texture. Glad it still worked out though.

  32. User avatar illa.becker2015 says:

    5 stars
Five stars! Also my kids stole two before I even plated. I think the onion/garlic combo is the secret.

  33. User avatar cherilyn.stiedemann says:

    5 stars
Made these for dinner tonight—super tasty and the patties held together nicely. I added a tiny squeeze of lemon at the end and it really brightened them up. Will repeat!

  34. User avatar tony.vonrueden says:

    4 stars
Really tasty, but 4-5 minutes per side might be short depending on your pan heat. Mine took closer to 6-7 minutes to cook through.

  35. User avatar katherine.beahan25 says:

    5 stars
These came out super juicy and flavorful. I added a little smoked paprika too and they tasted like comfort food. Would definitely make again!

  36. 4 stars
Pretty solid recipe. I used dried parsley because that’s what I had, and they still tasted great. Next time I’ll chop the onion smaller so it cooks more evenly.

    1. 3 stars
I think your next time tip is off a little—4-5 mins a side should already cook the onion inside. But chopping smaller probably helps texture though. I always forget to beat the egg good, so mine turn out a bit crumbly 😅

    2. User avatar antony.aufderhar88 says:

      5 stars
Glad it worked out! Dried parsley actually makes sense—just gotta keep the chop/seasoning balance. And yes, smaller onion pieces = more even cooking.

  37. User avatar rodrick.champlin1994 says:

    5 stars
My kids loved these. The golf-ball size is perfect—quick to cook and not messy. Served with ketchup and a side salad.

  38. 3 stars
Honestly I expected more “wow.” They taste like basic chicken patties (still good!), but not restaurant-level. Maybe my onion was too big pieces.

  39. User avatar jacqualine.lind32 says:

    5 stars
These chicken rissoles are a game changer! So flavorful and easy to make. My kids loved them too! ❤️

  40. User avatar andra.mayer says:

    5 stars
This is such a great base recipe. I’m already imagining variations: lemon zest, thyme, even a little grated cheese. Simple but flexible.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—these are such a solid base. I’ve added lemon zest + a pinch of thyme before and it made them taste restaurant-y. Also works great with grated cheese in the mix.

  41. User avatar camille.berge says:

    4 stars
Solid recipe, easy steps, and the rissoles held together well. I used panko instead of breadcrumbs and it still worked great.

    1. 5 stars
Good to hear! I’ve never tried panko for these—now I want to. Did you notice any extra crunch or did it stay pretty tender like with breadcrumbs?

    2. User avatar jamar.weissnat8 says:

      3 stars
Wait panko works? I always thought it’d be too dry. I might try this next time but I’ll probably use more egg to help it stick together again 😅

  42. User avatar kaye.rogahn says:

    4 stars
Not bad at all. I’m giving it four stars because I’m not sure the breadcrumbs quantity is exact—mine were slightly crumbly, but still flavorful.

  43. User avatar alan.stamm60 says:

    2 stars
I’m skeptical about breadcrumbs being “plain” like that—mine came out kinda heavy. Still edible though.

  44. User avatar kerri.leannon36 says:

    3 stars
Not bad at all. The flavor is good, but mine came out a little dry even though I followed the timing. Next time I’ll try mixing in a splash of water or extra egg to keep them tender.

    1. 5 stars
Thanks! Sorry yours turned out dry 😕 I’ve found the biggest help is not overmixing the chicken and keeping the heat at medium so it doesn’t brown too fast. A splash of water or an extra egg sounds like a great fix—let me know how it goes!

    2. User avatar fumiko.rodriguez says:

      3 stars
Dry? hmm. I think the 4–5 min each side is maybe a bit long if the patties are small. Also breadcrumbs can suck up moisture. Next time try fewer breadcrumbs or cover the pan for a couple minutes after flipping. Just my thoughts.

  45. User avatar gabriele.crist1974 says:

    4 stars
I’m skeptical about the cooking time—4-5 minutes each side seems short for ground chicken. I ended up cooking longer and they were fully done, so maybe medium heat varies a lot.

  46. User avatar colby.kunde63 says:

    4 stars
The texture was nice, but I think 4-5 minutes a side might be too long on medium for smaller patties. I’ll check temp next time.

  47. User avatar Orange Dartwing says:

    2 stars
I followed it exactly, but my patties fell apart in the pan. Maybe my breadcrumbs were too fine or my egg wasn’t enough? Taste was fine though.

  48. User avatar fleta.wunsch20 says:

    4 stars
Simple and filling. Definately a weeknight thing. Could eat these with mash potatoes all day.

    1. User avatar Florinda Roob says:

      3 stars
I made these last night and they were okay… but mine kinda fell apart. Next time I’ll add a bit more breadcrumbs. Also I used chicken mince that was already ground—maybe that’s why. Still filling though!

    2. 5 stars
Totally agree—these are perfect for a weeknight. I love that they’re simple but still feel like a real meal. Mash potatoes with them sounds dangerously good 😄

  49. User avatar Glorfindel says:

    5 stars
Amazing! These rissoles remind me of my grandma’s recipes. Thanks for bringing back those memories! 😊

  50. User avatar linwood.padberg91 says:

    5 stars
Made these tonight and they were so juicy! The garlic and parsley really pop. I served them with a lemony yogurt sauce and it was perfect.

  51. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

    2 stars
Kinda bland for me—needed more seasoning. I’ll add some paprika or chili next time. But the method is good.

    1. User avatar lizzzard says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—mine tasted a bit flat too until I bumped up the salt and pepper. Adding a pinch of paprika or chili sounds like a great fix.

    2. 4 stars
Maybe your onion was too mild? I think the frying time matters too—if you don’t brown them well they come out kinda bland. Still, good method!

  52. User avatar ian.gusikowski1952 says:

    2 stars
Why do you need bread crumbs? Isn’t that just adding extra calories? I prefer it without! But different strokes, I guess.

  53. User avatar phung.ortiz says:

    1 star
Burned them. 😅 Oil was too hot I guess. Didn’t taste good after that. Will try again though.

  54. 4 stars
Took me longer than expected, but they taste good. Next time, I’ll prep the ingredients the night before.

  55. 3 stars
I followed it exactly but mine were a bit dry on the inside. Not sure if I overcooked them or my pan was hotter than expected.

  56. User avatar Restless Draugr says:

    5 stars
Wow! Golden brown and juicy. I served them with a quick yogurt-garlic sauce and it was perfect. The garlic smell while frying was unreal.

    1. User avatar owen.steuber46 says:

      5 stars
Yes! That garlic frying aroma is the best part 😄 I also do a yogurt-garlic sauce and it really makes the rissoles pop.

  57. User avatar joan.greenfelder says:

    2 stars
Honestly? Ground chicken can be tricky and this one turned out bland for me. Next time I’ll season the mixture harder or add herbs.

    1. User avatar shanice.waelchi33 says:

      4 stars
I feel you—ground chicken really takes seasoning differently than beef. I’d double the pepper and add a splash of Worcestershire or a pinch of smoked paprika next time.

    2. 4 stars
Bland is usually either not enough salt (1 tsp can be low for 500g) or cooking time. Did you fry until they’re deep golden? My first batch was pale and it tasted sad 😅

  58. User avatar ashly.klocko7 says:

    2 stars
I don’t get it—rissoles sound fancy but it’s just chicken patties. Still, I tried it. But the garlic felt a bit strong, maybe because I used big cloves.

  59. User avatar jaymie.kulas says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly and… they stuck to my pan even with oil. Could be my pan, but I was annoyed. Flavor still decent though.

  60. User avatar marquis.nikolaus11 says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about “4-5 minutes each side” depending on patty thickness. Mine took closer to 7 minutes to cook through. Otherwise, pretty nice.

    1. User avatar zofia.runte8 says:

      5 stars
Yeah I totally agree—timing depends a lot on thickness and how hot the pan runs. Mine are usually closer to 6–7 min too if they’re bigger. I still follow the “cooked through” part and check by cutting one open.
