Tea Infused Oatmeal

August 13, 2025

Tea-infused oatmeal is a creative and comforting twist on a breakfast classic, bringing a new layer of flavor to a familiar dish. Instead of cooking oats in plain water or milk, the liquid is infused with tea, allowing the grains to absorb its aroma and taste. The result is a warm, nourishing bowl with subtle notes that can range from floral and delicate to bold and spiced, depending on the tea you choose.

The process starts by brewing a strong cup of tea, slightly more concentrated than what you would normally drink. Black teas like Earl Grey or English breakfast add a robust and malty flavor, green tea brings grassy freshness, while chai delivers a warm blend of spices. Once brewed, the tea becomes the base for cooking the oats, with milk or a dairy-free alternative added for creaminess if desired.

As the oats simmer, they take on the tea’s color and fragrance, creating a breakfast that feels more sophisticated yet remains as easy as a standard bowl of oatmeal. A touch of honey, maple syrup, or brown sugar can be added to balance the flavors, and toppings like fresh fruit, nuts, seeds, or shredded coconut complement the infusion beautifully.

Tea-infused oatmeal is not just about flavor, it is also a way to create a more mindful morning ritual. The aroma of the tea as it brews and the gentle simmer of oats make the preparation feel calming, almost meditative. This kind of breakfast invites you to slow down and enjoy each spoonful.

It is also highly adaptable to the seasons. In cooler months, spiced teas work perfectly with toppings like baked apples or roasted pears. In spring or summer, lighter teas like jasmine or chamomile pair well with berries or stone fruits.

By simply swapping your cooking liquid, you transform an everyday breakfast into something unique and flavorful. Tea-infused oatmeal proves that small changes in the kitchen can lead to delicious and unexpected results, making it a breakfast worth looking forward to.

Just okay. I guess I like my oatmeal plain. Honey helped though!

I don’t get it. Oatmeal should just be made with water or milk. Tea? Sounds weird.

I totally get you! I was skeptical at first too, but it’s surprisingly good! The tea adds a nice flavor.

    2. 2 stars
Nah, that sounds kinda gross. Oatmeal is good with just milk or water, don’t need no tea messing it up!

This is a unique take on oatmeal! I never thought of using tea. I used earl grey and it was delish!

  4. 1 star
Not for me. Tasted like soggy tea leaves. Maybe I did it wrong but I won’t try again.

tea + oatmeal = what?? But I tried it and its actually pretty good. who knew!

    1. 5 stars
I was skeptical at first too, but it really works! I used chamomile tea and it was like a warm hug in a bowl. 😊

  6. 4 stars
Pretty good, but I think 1/4 cup milk is not enough for the texture I like. Also I steeped too long once and it turned a little bitter—still edible though.

Totally agree on the milk amount—1/4 cup makes mine a bit dry too. I usually add a splash more at the end until it looks creamy.

  7. 4 stars
Super easy and quick to make! I added raisins and almonds too. Perfect breakfast!

  9. 2 stars
Honestly, sounds weird. Oatmeal with tea? Not sure I wanna try that.

    1. 4 stars
I thought it was weird too at first, but trust me, it tastes amazing! The tea adds a nice flavor to the oats. Give it a shot!

  10. 3 stars
Uh, can I just use any tea? I’m not a fan of chamomile, what else can I try?

This is such a cozy idea—tea flavor in oatmeal totally works. I used Earl Grey and it tasted like a warm pastry in a bowl.

    1. User avatar vanesa.hettinger2 says:

Yes!! Earl Grey oatmeal is seriously cozy—like a warm hug. I do the same thing and it’s perfect with a tiny bit of honey. 😍

  12. 1 star
Why not just make tea and oats separately? Meh.

    1. 5 stars
Because it’s basically breakfast cozy + tea vibes in one bowl. If you like tea, it just tastes like it actually belongs there.

  13. 5 stars
Wow, I can’t believe I never thought of this! Just made it with chai tea and it was top notch!

I don’t know, mixing tea with oats sounds kinda weird. Oatmeal should be savory! But who knows, maybe I’ll try it just to see.

    1. User avatar merideth.gerlach2014 says:

      2 stars
Nah, I don’t think it’s gonna be good. Oats are for breakfast, not for tea time! Stick to the classics!

    2. 4 stars
I totally get that! Oatmeal is usually so hearty, but trying something new could be fun. Let me know if you do!

My kids loved this! Helps a lot with getting them to eat breakfast. We used earl grey and added some chocolate chips.

  27. 2 stars
Meh. Tea flavor was too subtle for me and the oats were kinda bland without extra honey.

  28. 5 stars
This is such a creative idea! I love oatmeal but never thought of making it with tea. I used chamomile and it was so soothing. Thanks for sharing!

I think green tea is an interesting choice! I usually go for chai or something spicier. Maybe that’s why it felt weird? 🤷‍♀️

    2. 3 stars
Weird? Nahh, it’s just different. I did jasmine tea once and it tasted great! Just gotta find what you like!
