Steak Frites is a classic French dish consisting of a succulent steak paired with crispy fries. It’s a simple yet elegant meal that’s perfect for any occasion.
Steak Frites, translating simply to “steak and fries,” is one of the most beloved dishes in French cuisine, often considered the ultimate bistro meal. This seemingly straightforward pairing of grilled or pan-seared steak with golden, crispy French fries is elevated by quality ingredients, classic technique, and a reverence for balance and flavor. Served throughout France and in French-style restaurants around the world, Steak Frites is both rustic and refined — comfort food with an unmistakably European flair.
The choice of steak can vary depending on the region or establishment, but traditionally cuts like ribeye, sirloin, or entrecôte are used. These cuts are prized for their tenderness and marbling, which, when seared in butter or grilled over high heat, develop a deeply flavorful crust. The steak is often served with a pan sauce — peppercorn, Béarnaise, or red wine reduction — that enhances its richness and adds another layer of depth to the dish.
Fries, or “frites,” are equally important. Thinly cut, double-fried potatoes yield the perfect balance of crispness and fluffiness. The best frites are made fresh and seasoned with sea salt right before serving, making them a decadent but essential counterpart to the hearty steak.
While the preparation of Steak Frites is relatively simple, its appeal lies in the quality of the ingredients and the precision in execution. It’s a dish that doesn’t rely on heavy seasoning or extravagant components. Instead, it honors the natural flavor of the meat and the crisp perfection of well-fried potatoes. Whether enjoyed at a neighborhood bistro in Paris or recreated at home with care, Steak Frites is a celebration of French culinary tradition — one plate at a time.

Ingredients
- 2 pieces sirloin steak about 6 oz each
- 4 cups russet potatoes cut into matchsticks
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil for frying
- to taste salt and pepper for seasoning
- 2 tablespoons butter for the steak
- 1 clove garlic minced
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley chopped
Instructions
- Peel the potatoes and cut them into matchsticks. Soak them in cold water for at least 30 minutes, then drain and pat dry.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a deep-fryer or a heavy-bottomed pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry the potatoes in batches for about 4-5 minutes until golden and crisp. Remove and drain on paper towels.
- Season the steaks with salt and pepper. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add the butter. Once melted, add the garlic and cook the steaks for 3-4 minutes on each side for medium-rare.
- Let the steaks rest for a few minutes before serving. Sprinkle with fresh parsley and serve alongside the fries.

This was super delicious! The fries came out perfectly crispy. My family loved it!
The oil needs to be hotter! My fries were kinda soggy. Maybe I did it wrong?
I don’t know what went wrong but my fries turned soggy and the steak was tough. Not making this again.
Easy and quick! I added some cheese on top of the fries, yummm. 10/10 would recommend!
It’s a classic but seriously, who slices potatoes like matchsticks? That’s just wasteful. Why not just chunk ’em? 🤔
Steak Frites? Thought it was some fancy dish. Its just steak and fries right? 😅 Anyway, taste was okay.
I don’t know. Seems kinda basic? Steak and fries is just… basic. I expected more complex flavors.
Sometimes simple is best! You can always add your own twist with sauces or spices. Steak and fries done right is a classic! 🍽️
Steak was good, but my garlic didn’t really flavor the meat like I hoped. Idk…Maybe I added too much?
Never tried makin fries from scratch before! But this recipe looks easy enough. Wish me luck! 🤞
Good luck! I tried it once and it turned out great! You can do it!
Perfect for date night! I made this for my girlfriend, and she loved it. Thanks for sharing!
That sounds amazing! Can’t wait to try it for my own date night! 😍
The matchsticks fries sound fancy, but I just chop my potatoes chunky. Does it really change the taste much?
GREAT recipe. Just make sure you don’t overcook the steak, or it will be tough. Trust me, I learned the hard way!
Totally agree! Overcooked steak is a no-go. I always aim for medium-rare too. Makes such a difference!
Nah, I don’t know. I think well-done steaks have their charm too. But I guess if you like them juicy, sure!
Wow, this steak frites recipe is amazing! The fries came out super crispy, and the steak was perfectly cooked. My family loved it!
