Shrimp Fried Rice

September 14, 2023

Shrimp Fried Rice is the ultimate comfort food, quick to make, full of flavor, and endlessly satisfying. It’s one of those go-to dishes that brings together simple ingredients in the most delicious way. Whether you’re looking for a weeknight dinner solution or trying to use up leftover rice, shrimp fried rice delivers on taste, texture, and convenience.

At its heart, this dish features perfectly cooked shrimp that are tender and slightly crispy, paired with fluffy rice, scrambled eggs, and a colorful mix of vegetables like peas, carrots, and green onions. Everything is tossed together in a hot pan or wok with soy sauce, garlic, and just the right amount of sesame oil, creating layers of savory flavor with a hint of sweetness and umami.

One of the best things about shrimp fried rice is its versatility. You can customize it with your favorite vegetables or spice it up with chili flakes or sriracha for extra heat. It’s also a great way to add protein to your meal without much effort, shrimp cooks quickly and adds a touch of elegance to a classic dish.

Using day-old rice is key to achieving the best texture, freshly cooked rice tends to be too soft and sticky. The slightly dried-out grains allow each ingredient to shine, creating that signature fried rice feel.

Shrimp Fried Rice works beautifully as a main dish or a side. Pair it with a light soup or a fresh cucumber salad for a complete meal. It’s quick enough to whip up on a busy evening and tasty enough to impress guests or satisfy a craving for takeout, without leaving your kitchen.

Once you make shrimp fried rice at home, you may never want to order it again. It’s fast, flavorful, and always a hit.

This recipe is a total win! I followed it to the letter and my family devoured it. Highly recommend!

  2. User avatar antone.kohler1986 says:

    3 stars
The steps are easy, but my eggs always turn into little dry bits when I scramble them like that. Any tip for keeping them tender?

  3. User avatar Leto Atreides says:

    3 stars
Good recipe. I’m skeptical about cooking shrimp “2-3 minutes per side” because shrimp usually doesn’t take sides like that—mine overcooked slightly. But the overall method works.

  4. 2 stars
My eggs came out kinda chewy even though I scrambled them. Maybe the heat was too high. Still good, but I wish it was more fluffy.

  5. 3 stars
Not bad, but my kids didn’t like the shrimp. They prefer chicken nuggets.

  6. User avatar danial.dicki2013 says:

Why do we need oyster sauce? Looks weird to me. Don’t think I’ll try it.

  7. User avatar basementDweller says:

    3 stars
Too much oil, I think it could be healthier. Just my opinion!

  8. User avatar basementDweller says:

Love fried rice but I’m one of those people who adds green onions and a little sriracha. With those tweaks this is a keeper. Simple weeknight dinner.

    1. User avatar thomasena.king says:

      4 stars
Tried it, but I feel like it needs more liquid? Mine turned a bit dry. Maybe I used too much rice or cooked the shrimp too long. Still good though—next time I’ll add green onions and a bit more sriracha like you said.

    2. 5 stars
Yes! This is exactly how I do fried rice too—garlic + peas/carrots + soy/oyster is the sweet spot. I don’t even miss takeout anymore.

  9. User avatar Clint Schaden says:

    3 stars
It was alright, but not as flavorful as I expected. Maybe I should have added more soy sauce.

  10. User avatar karima.goldner19 says:

    5 stars
Easier than I thought! Who knew cooking could be this fun?

    1. User avatar marshall.mcdermott1953 says:

      3 stars
Easier? I had a hard time getting the shrimp cooked right. Maybe I’m just not a cook.

    2. 5 stars
I’m glad you found it fun! Cooking should be an adventure! 🍤

  11. User avatar Draugr Wight says:

This was amazing! My kids loved it!

  12. 5 stars
This was amazing! My family loved it!

    1. 5 stars
I’m so glad to hear that! This recipe is a family favorite for us too. 😍

    2. User avatar Wonko the Sane says:

      2 stars
But did you really use fresh shrimp? I heard frozen shrimp don’t taste the same.

  13. User avatar nickolas.renner says:

    4 stars
Made this for dinner last night. The shrimp took a bit longer to cook than the recipe says.

  14. User avatar shirley.hand37 says:

    5 stars
Love it! Frozen veggies made it super easy. 🌟

    1. User avatar louanne.medhurst says:

      5 stars
Absolutely agree! Frozen veggies make it so quick. I never knew cooking could be this easy! 🍚✨

    2. User avatar kori.block6 says:

      3 stars
Yeah, but using frozen veggies ain’t always the best flavor… I prefer fresh ones for better taste.

  15. User avatar doug.mcclure says:

    5 stars
Made this tonight and it was seriously better than takeout. I used day-old rice and everything came out fluffy, not mushy. The sesame oil at the end is the move.

    1. User avatar burt.lueilwitz says:

      5 stars
This is the kind of fried rice win I love—day-old rice + sesame oil is 100% the move. Did you use jasmine rice or something else?

  16. User avatar brett.bernier83 says:

    2 stars
Why does it say 2-3 minutes per side for shrimp? Shrimp usually cooks way faster than that, mine overcooked and got rubbery 😬

  17. User avatar wilson.heller says:

    3 stars
Not sure about 3 cups cooked rice—seems like a lot for just 1 lb shrimp? I had to add extra oil because it felt dry. Could be my skillet size though.

    1. User avatar Miss Su Swift says:

      5 stars
I think 1 lb shrimp + 3 cups cooked rice is totally fine if you’re using day-old rice. If it was freshly cooked, it can turn out drier and harder to spread in the pan. Maybe try using colder rice and don’t overcrowd the skillet.

    2. User avatar Demon King Piccolo says:

      4 stars
Yeah 3 cups cooked rice sounds like a lot at first, but fried rice usually needs “leftover” rice that’s already pretty loose. If your skillet runs small or the rice is clumpy, it can feel dry—adding a touch more oil (or even a splash of soy sauce) makes a big difference.

  18. User avatar abram.cartwright1996 says:

    1 star
Not enough ingredients! where’s the scallions? I wouldn’t even call this fried rice!

    1. User avatar collin.rath62 says:

      4 stars
I think it’s fine without scallions. Shrimp and other flavors are enough! Plus, it’s still fried rice at the end of the day.

    2. User avatar janey.pollich says:

      2 stars
You call this a recipe? Where’s the green? I mean scallions are pretty basic for fried rice! Seems kinda bland to me.

  19. User avatar lionel.hirthe77 says:

    4 stars
Can we substitute the shrimp for chicken? I’m not a big seafood fan.

    1. User avatar yolonda.stamm says:

      5 stars
Yes, you can totally use chicken instead of shrimp. Just cook the chicken until it’s done thoroughly. It’ll taste just as great!

  20. User avatar wilford.damore27 says:

    5 stars
So good! I also chucked in some leftover chicken and it was yum!

    1. User avatar Oretha Zboncak says:

      5 stars
Wow, adding chicken sounds awesome! I’ll have to try that next time. 😋

  21. User avatar Britt Sipes says:

    4 stars
This is good but my garlic burnt a lil bit, lol. Still tasted way better than takeout.

  22. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

    3 stars
Eh, it was okay. I’ve had better fried rice from takeout. Maybe add more soy sauce?

    1. User avatar frank.cronin0 says:

      4 stars
I think the soy sauce was fine, but you gotta make sure you fry it right. Maybe your rice was too dry? Mine turned out awesome!

    2. User avatar freida.huels59 says:

      5 stars
Sounds like you don’t know a good fried rice 😂 I love this recipe! Maybe you just don’t have good taste?

  23. User avatar anita.okon98 says:

    3 stars
Taste was alright but my rice got too mushy…maybe I cooked it wrong? 🙁

  24. User avatar Reg Nullify says:

    2 stars
Eh, it was ok. Didn’t really hit the spot for me. Just tasted like any other fried rice. 2 stars.

    1. User avatar norbert.christiansen says:

      4 stars
I thought it was really good! Maybe try using more soy sauce next time? It adds a nice flavor. 😊

    2. 3 stars
Nah, I disagree. This recipe has great ingredients. Maybe you just don’t like fried rice? 🤷‍♂️

  25. User avatar leonor.botsford2010 says:

    1 star
Shrimp in fried rice? That’s just wrong! Why not use chicken or beef instead? 1 star for being so odd.

  26. User avatar beryl.balistreri1969 says:

    4 stars
Simple and quick! My kids loved it! I didn’t even have sesame oil, but it still tasted good.

  27. 2 stars
I put too much soy sauce and it was salty. Next time I’ll go easy on it.

  28. User avatar Werebear says:

    4 stars
I don’t like oyster sauce. Can I just leave it out?

    1. User avatar mathew.mclaughlin says:

      4 stars
Yeah, you can leave it out! The soy sauce will still give it a nice flavor.

  29. User avatar mica.langworth78 says:

    2 stars
I messed it up, forgot the eggs! It was still edible, I guess.

  30. User avatar julieta.sanford3 says:

    4 stars
Simple to make and tastes delicious! I added some extra soy sauce.

  31. User avatar corrina.hand says:

    2 stars
Shrimp fried rice? I thought it’s just a side dish. Not sure about this.

    1. User avatar leatha.mueller says:

      5 stars
Seriously? Fried rice can be a full meal! Plus, shrimp makes it fancy. 😋

    2. User avatar teena.littel2025 says:

      4 stars
I always thought it was a side too, but this recipe looks really hearty! Might give it a try.

  32. 5 stars
Superb! But I didn’t have oyster sauce, so I just added extra soy sauce. Yummy!

  33. User avatar alberto.runolfsdottir says:

    3 stars
Too salty for my taste. Maybe lessen the soy sauce next time.

  34. User avatar ronda.medhurst99 says:

    1 star
Seriously? Who puts eggs in fried rice? That’s not how it’s done!

  35. User avatar ilda.spinka33 says:

    2 stars
I don’t know about shrimp in fried rice… sounds weird. I usually stick to chicken or plain veggies.

    1. User avatar Hotblack Desiato says:

      5 stars
Shrimp in fried rice is actually really popular! Gives it a nice flavor. You should try it!

  36. User avatar elbert.glover1976 says:

    2 stars
Disliked it! I think shrimp shouldnt be cooked that long. Way too rubbery!

  37. User avatar Miss Sheridan Hessel says:

    2 stars
This recipe is okay, but I can’t cook rice properly. Help!

  38. User avatar an.treutel76 says:

    5 stars
Good recipe! But can this be done with leftover rice? 🤔

  39. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    2 stars
Eh, I’m not a big fan of shrimp. Maybe chicken next time?

  40. User avatar haywood.purdy69 says:

    3 stars
It was okay, but I think I overcooked the shrimp. They were kinda rubbery. Maybe next time I’ll get it right. 3 stars.

    1. User avatar teri.crona43 says:

      4 stars
Don’t worry, overcooking shrimp happens to the best of us! Just watch them closely next time; they’re super quick to cook. Great recipe overall!

    2. User avatar shaneka.brekke says:

      3 stars
Rubbery shrimp? Sounds like you mighta cooked it too long! I always do that too. But hey, it’s a learning process. Hope your next try’s better!

  41. User avatar micaela.nicolas61 says:

    5 stars
Turned out great! The sesame oil at the end really makes it smell amazing. I used leftover rice from the day before and it fried up perfectly.

    1. User avatar Toh Yahsa says:

      5 stars
Glad it worked for you! Leftover rice is the move for sure—less moisture means you get that better fried texture. The sesame oil at the end is absolutely the finishing touch.

  42. User avatar morton.turcotte20 says:

    3 stars
Okay recipe, I had to wing it a bit! Used leftover chicken and it was yum. Not too sure on the oyster sauce though.

    1. User avatar brynn.bailey says:

      4 stars
Sounds like a creative twist! Using leftover chicken is a great idea. I think the oyster sauce adds a nice flavor, but it’s definitely not for everyone.

  43. User avatar rusty.wehner52 says:

    4 stars
Simple and tasty, but I forgot to buy eggs 😅 but still worked out fine.

  44. User avatar errol.morar1952 says:

    5 stars
Easy recipe! I made it in under 30 mins. Definitely a keeper! 👍

    1. User avatar hollis.schmeler4 says:

      2 stars
Under 30 mins? That’s too fast. Are you sure? I can’t even boil rice in that time! 😅

    2. User avatar venice.west9 says:

      4 stars
So glad to hear you found it easy! I’m going to try it this weekend. Do you think I can add bell peppers?

  45. 5 stars
This was absolutely delicious! The shrimp was so fresh and the flavors were on point. Will definitely make again!

    1. User avatar wellRespected says:

      2 stars
I tried this recipe but it didn’t turn out great. The shrimp were overcooked and the rice was mushy. Maybe I did something wrong?

    2. User avatar ollie.roberts80 says:

      5 stars
So glad you enjoyed it! Shrimp fried rice is a favorite in our house. What kind of shrimp did you use?

  46. User avatar scotty.bechtelar69 says:

    5 stars
This was amazing! I never knew shrimp fried rice could be this good. My family loved it! Definitely a 5!

    1. User avatar stacia.muller says:

      5 stars
I’m so glad you liked it! Shrimp fried rice is a family favorite in my house too. Did you add any other veggies? I think bell peppers would be great!

  47. User avatar jeanetta.hermann52 says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid—my only issue was the rice clumped a bit. Next time I’ll spread it out more and make sure the rice is fully cold before cooking. Flavor is on point though.

    1. User avatar ALTplusF4 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—cold, day-old rice is key. When the rice clumps it’s usually not spread out fast enough (or the pan isn’t hot). Glad the flavor worked for you though!

  48. 5 stars
just like my mom used to make! Nostalgia overload!

    1. User avatar harriet.hudson says:

      5 stars
Awww, I love that! My mom’s shrimp fried rice was the best too! Nothing beats those childhood memories.

    2. User avatar lavone.pfeffer1968 says:

      2 stars
That’s cool and all, but my mom never used oyster sauce. Isn’t that sauce kinda weird?

  49. User avatar keena.kemmer46 says:

    4 stars
I added chicken instead of shrimp and it turned out great!

    1. User avatar shandra.pfeffer78 says:

      5 stars
That sounds awesome! Chicken is a great substitute. I’m gonna try it this weekend!

  50. User avatar Rita Tremblay DDS says:

    5 stars
YUM! I added some chili flakes for a kick and it was perfect. Thanks for sharing!

    1. 5 stars
Sounds delicious! I love the idea of adding chili flakes. Gonna try that next time!

  51. User avatar alisha.lehner2018 says:

    5 stars
Made this tonight—super flavorful and the sesame oil really pops. I used day-old rice and it fried up perfectly.

    1. 3 stars
I made it but my rice came out kinda clumpy 😕 maybe I didn’t use enough heat? Also I mixed the sauces together first—still tasted good though.

    2. 5 stars
Yesss—sesame oil is the secret weapon. I always save it for the end so it stays fragrant. Glad day-old rice worked for you!

  52. User avatar kristi.lowe says:

    1 star
I don’t have oyster sauce, could I use ketchup instead?

  53. User avatar gilberto.kuvalis1979 says:

    4 stars
This is delicious, but 3 cups cooked rice felt like too much for my skillet. I had to use a bigger pan or it got crowded. Still worth it!

    1. 4 stars
Huh, I think 3 cups is fine but maybe my skillet is wider? I usually cook in batches if it’s tight. Also I add the rice a little earlier so it doesn’t clump—idk maybe that’s why mine works.

    2. User avatar mina.collier8 says:

      5 stars
Totally get that—fried rice really does need a roomy skillet/wok. I’ve used 3 cups cooked rice before and it’s crowded unless the pan is big. Bigger pan = same flavor, less steam.

  54. User avatar nyla.rath says:

    3 stars
I followed it mostly but I didn’t have oyster sauce so I used teriyaki. Still tasty, but it tasted more sweet than salty. Would make again with the right sauce.

  55. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    3 stars
It turned out okay but the shrimp was kinda chewy.

    1. User avatar ivan.schiller1960 says:

      3 stars
It sounds yummy but the shrimp are tough? That’s a bummer. I thought shrimp should be soft. 🤔

    2. User avatar ArabianNights says:

      4 stars
I had the same issue with the shrimp! Maybe try not to overcook it next time? It can get tough real fast.

  56. User avatar sharika.bartoletti86 says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid and easy. I didn’t have oyster sauce so I subbed hoisin + a splash of soy, and it was still good. Shrimp cooked up fast like it says.

  57. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

    2 stars
Not sure about the oyster sauce—felt a little too rich for me. Next time I’ll go lighter and see.

  58. 5 stars
This shrimp fried rice is delicious! I added some spinach and it turned out great! Thanks for sharing!

    1. User avatar cliff.emard80 says:

I also added some extra soy sauce and it tasted amazing! Great recipe!

    2. User avatar helen.pollich says:

      2 stars
Spinach? Really? I don’t think that’s supposed to go in fried rice…

  59. User avatar kayce.cummerata2 says:

    4 stars
Quick and easy! I used leftover rice, and it turned out great! Will make again for sure! 4/5!

  60. User avatar don.blanda60 says:

    4 stars
I followed it exactly but my eggs turned into little bits instead of soft scramble—still tasty though. Maybe my pan wasn’t hot enough? Next time I’ll crank the heat.

  61. User avatar buddy.legros53 says:

    5 stars
This turned out amazing! I loved the flavor of the shrimp and the rice. Will definitely make again!

  62. User avatar martin.cassin29 says:

    3 stars
The flavors are there, but I think it needs more sauce. I ended up adding extra soy sauce because it tasted a bit bland at first.

  63. User avatar percy.parker says:

    4 stars
Fried rice is simple right? Just throw everything in and hope for the best! 🥢

  64. User avatar renaldo.sanford says:

    2 stars
Eh. I think it’s missing something—maybe more garlic or MSG? Also sesame oil smell is strong; I only used half and it was still fine.

  65. User avatar Wonko the Sane says:

    4 stars
I followed it mostly, but I think 3 cups rice is a lot for 1 pound shrimp? Still tasty though, just more rice than expected.

  66. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

    5 stars
My kid ate it all and asked for seconds, so that’s basically a 10/10. I was surprised how quick it came together.

    1. User avatar lahoma.tromp says:

      5 stars
My kids do the same thing—if they want seconds it’s basically science-approved 😄 Shrimp fried rice is such a win, especially when it’s quick like that.

  67. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

    5 stars
This is better than takeout in my opinion. Simple steps, lots of flavor, and the garlic/soy combo hits. Family approved!

  68. User avatar robbie.bednar67 says:

    2 stars
Not gonna lie, I messed up the rice—mine was freshly cooked and it clumped. If you have day-old rice, use it. Otherwise it turns into rice glue 😅

    1. User avatar ricky.aufderhar21 says:

      3 stars
Huh, I’ve used fresh rice plenty of times and it was fine… maybe your heat was too low? Or maybe not enough oil? 😅 Either way “rice glue” made me laugh.

    2. 5 stars
100% agree—fresh rice is the main troublemaker. I always chill mine overnight (or at least 30 min) and it fries up way better, not clumpy mess. Great heads-up!
