Ingredients
- 1 cup basmati rice rinsed and soaked for 30 minutes
- 500 grams shrimp peeled and deveined
- 1 cup yogurt
- 2 tablespoons Biryani masala
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 2 tablespoons ghee
- 1 large onion finely sliced
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1 inch ginger grated
- 2 cups water
Instructions
- Marinate the shrimp with yogurt, Biryani masala, turmeric, and salt. Set aside for 30 minutes.
- Heat ghee in a large pan. Add onion, garlic, and ginger and sauté until the onions are golden brown.
- Add the marinated shrimp and cook until it’s half done.
- Add the soaked rice and mix well.
- Pour in the water, cover the pan, and let it cook on low heat until the rice is cooked and the water is absorbed.
- Serve hot garnished with cilantro and lemon wedges.

I don’t think shrimp belongs in biryani. Traditional biryani is with chicken or lamb. Can someone explain?
I tried this recipe but didn’t have Biryani masala, so I used curry powder instead. It tasted off. Not sure if I did something wrong.
Yummm! My family loved it. I added some peas and carrots to the rice for more color. A little bit of spice is nice too. 🙂
