Shrimp Biryani

January 10, 2025

Shrimp biryani is a fragrant, flavorful dish that combines tender shrimp with aromatic spices and fluffy rice, making it a standout choice for any meal. A fusion of rich, savory flavors with a hint of warmth from spices like cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves, this dish is perfect for those who love bold, complex flavors. Traditionally made with chicken or mutton, shrimp biryani offers a lighter, yet equally delicious, version of the classic recipe.

The base of shrimp biryani begins with long-grain basmati rice, which is cooked separately to retain its fluffy texture. The rice is then layered with sautéed shrimp, which are marinated in yogurt, garlic, ginger, and a blend of spices. The marinade allows the shrimp to soak up all the aromatic flavors, making each bite packed with flavor.

The key to a great biryani is the balance of spices. A blend of turmeric, cumin, coriander, and garam masala infuses the shrimp and rice, creating depth and a warm, fragrant aroma that’s characteristic of this beloved dish. Fresh cilantro and mint leaves are often added as a garnish, adding a pop of color and a refreshing contrast to the rich flavors.

Once the rice and shrimp are layered, the dish is slow-cooked or simmered, allowing the spices to meld and the shrimp to absorb the flavors of the rice. This process helps the dish come together, making the biryani irresistibly fragrant and perfectly spiced.

Shrimp biryani is often served with a side of cooling raita (yogurt with cucumber and spices) or a tangy salad, which helps balance the heat and richness of the dish. It’s a satisfying one-pot meal that’s perfect for special occasions or a weeknight dinner that feels like a celebration. Whether you’re a biryani enthusiast or new to this flavorful world, shrimp biryani is sure to become a favorite.

I don’t think shrimp belongs in biryani. Traditional biryani is with chicken or lamb. Can someone explain?

  2. 3 stars
I tried this recipe but didn’t have Biryani masala, so I used curry powder instead. It tasted off. Not sure if I did something wrong.

Yummm! My family loved it. I added some peas and carrots to the rice for more color. A little bit of spice is nice too. 🙂

Too spicy for me! I recommend less masala if you have sensitive tongue.

I found this recipe difficult to follow. The shrimp overcooked and the rice was mushy. Not happy with how it turned out.

    1. 4 stars
I think maybe the shrimp got overcooked because they were left on too long? The timing is pretty crucial with seafood. I had a similar issue once, but now I just watch it closely when cooking!

Gotta say, shrimp ain’t my thing, but my buddy loved this dish! 😋

I dont think shrimp belong in biryani. That being said, it was alright I guess. But I still prefer chicken. 🤷‍♂️

    1. 4 stars
Shrimp biryani is a great twist! I love the taste of shrimp, but I get what you mean about preferring chicken. Each to their own! 🦐🍚

  10. 4 stars
Biryani? I love biriyani!! This like a good recipe, thumbs up!

Looks easy, but shrimp cook quick! I overcooked mine. Use timer next time!

    1. User avatar dalia.johnston says:

      2 stars
Sshrimp? I always just throw ’em in for a few mins without thinkin. Do you really need a timer for this?

    2. User avatar nelson.mueller3 says:

      5 stars
I know right! Shrimp really gets rubbery if you cook it too long. Using a timer is a smart move!

  12. User avatar norbert.borer33 says:

    4 stars
Very good! But can you use frozen shrimp? That’s what I had on hand.

    1. User avatar gino.pacocha32 says:

      5 stars
Yes, you can definitely use frozen shrimp! Just make sure to thaw them properly before marinating, and they should work just as well. Enjoy your meal!

  13. User avatar ivy.sporer64 says:

The ghee made it sooo good! Y’all are missing out if you don’t try this.

  14. User avatar kurtis.stark26 says:

The instructions were kinda confusing. I ended up with a mushy mess. Biryani is s’posed to be fluffy, right?

    1. User avatar Miss Gaylene Hegmann says:

      4 stars
I totally get where you’re coming from! Biryani is meant to be fluffy, not mushy. Maybe try not to stir it too much when cooking! Good luck next time!

    2. User avatar lucius.gleichner78 says:

      2 stars
Fluffy? Never heard of that. Biryani is just spices and rice, how can it be fluffy? Just cook it right next time.

Don’t worry, it happens! Maybe try less soaking next time or check the water amount. Biryani can be tricky! 🍚
