Torta de Jamón

September 29, 2023

Few things capture the heart of Mexican comfort food like a freshly made torta de jamón. This humble ham sandwich, typically served on a crusty telera or bolillo roll, is a nostalgic favorite for many who grew up enjoying it in lunchboxes, at markets, or as a quick after-school snack.

While its ingredients are simple, the torta de jamón delivers big on flavor and texture. The bread is slightly crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, providing the perfect base for layers of savory goodness. Traditional versions begin with a generous slather of mayonnaise, followed by thinly sliced ham. From there, the sandwich becomes a canvas for personal taste.

Classic toppings include lettuce, tomato, avocado, sliced onion, and pickled jalapeños for a bit of kick. Some variations add a smear of refried beans, while others include a slice of cheese or even a fried egg for extra richness. A dash of hot sauce or a squeeze of lime often brings everything together with a bright, tangy finish.

The beauty of this sandwich lies in its versatility. It’s quick to prepare and adaptable to whatever you have on hand, which makes it a go-to option for busy weekdays or impromptu meals. Despite its simplicity, a well-made torta de jamón can be deeply satisfying.

In many parts of Mexico, you’ll find tortas sold at street stalls or casual eateries, often wrapped in paper and served warm. They’re perfect for grabbing on the go, yet comforting enough to enjoy at the table with a cold drink or a side of chips.

Whether you’re discovering it for the first time or revisiting a childhood favorite, the torta de jamón is a reminder that the best meals are often the simplest. It’s a sandwich with soul, layered with flavor, and made with love.

  19. 3 stars
Not bad, but I think it could use some more spices or something. Just a bit bland for me.

  20. User avatar tanya.toy69 says:

Why put eggs in a Torta? Sounds wrong. I stick to the traditional recipe. 🤷‍♂️

  21. 4 stars
I don’t like onions. Can I leave them out? Or will it ruin the whole thing?

What is a Torta? Is it like a cake? I’m confused. But I wanna try it.

    1. User avatar Shadout Mapes says:

      5 stars
A torta, in this case, is more like a savory dish rather than a sweet cake. It’s kind of like a frittata with ham and cheese! Sounds delicious!

  30. User avatar blair.friesen19 says:

    2 stars
Why do we bake it? Isn’t this just a frittata? I don’t get it.

The ham gets super chewy cooked like this. Not my favorite. I prefer it fried first.

    1. 3 stars
Chewy ham? No way! Sounds nasty. I think frying first would make it better like you said. Gonna try your way next time.

    2. User avatar rodolfo.bechtelar says:

      4 stars
I totally get what you mean! Frying it first does add a nice texture. Have you tried it that way? Would love to know how it turns out!

  50. User avatar erich.kozey60 says:

    3 stars
This recipe is simple, but I think it lacks some flavor. Maybe add some spices?

    1. 4 stars
I totally agree! A pinch of cayenne or some herbs could really elevate this dish. Maybe thyme or paprika?

  51. User avatar caroline.bergstrom says:

    5 stars

    2. User avatar delmar.torphy says:

      2 stars
Not sure about that. Torta de Jamón should be classic without extra stuff. Just saying.

  59. 2 stars
Was okay, but I prefer my eggs scrambled. This was weird to me.

I don’t think adding milk to a torta is a good idea… it turned out kinda soggy.

    1. User avatar hong.beahan2011 says:

      4 stars
I think the milk is just to keep it moist! Maybe try reducing the amount next time? 🤔

  66. User avatar refugio.west86 says:

Did I read wrong? Baking powder in eggs? Seems strange to me. Idk about this…

    1. User avatar belinda.schowalter29 says:

      4 stars
Yeah, I thought that was weird too. But baking powder helps make it fluffy! Give it a try before judging!

  67. User avatar Brand-shei says:

    4 stars
So easy to make! Perfect for brunch or lunch. I added some peppers for extra crunch. Delicious!

  68. User avatar Miss Domenic Rodriguez says:

  71. User avatar CTRLplusW says:

    2 stars
Do you really need that much cheese? Seems like overkill. I might skip it next time.

      5 stars
I think the cheese is what makes it delicious! Can’t skip the flavor, right?

  72. User avatar mathWizard says:

    2 stars
Literally took longer than the cook time to prep! Uh, no thanks.

  73. User avatar gaston.ullrich58 says:

    3 stars
Easy peasy! But I may have confused teaspoons for tablespoons… Oops! Isn’t that crucial?

  74. 3 stars
I didn’t have milk, so I used water instead. It turned out okay, but I’m sure milk would’ve been better. ⭐⭐⭐

    1. User avatar w00d_ch0p says:

      5 stars
Who needs milk anyway! Water works just fine. Plus, jamón has a lotta flavor, so it probably didn’t matter much. Wish I could try it! 😋

    2. 4 stars
Using water instead of milk? That’s brave! I wouldn’t have thought of that. It’s good to experiment, but I agree, milk usually makes things creamier. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

  75. User avatar Great Fairies says:

    2 stars

    1. 4 stars
I get what you’re saying, but eggs and milk are super common in recipes. It makes it creamy and frothy!

    3 stars
I tried making it but it didn’t turn out like yours. Maybe I did something wrong.
