Cook Time 15 minutes
Total Time 25 minutes

Ingredients

  • 24 ounces cod fillets about 6 ounces each
  • 4 cups broth fish or vegetable
  • 1 Lemon thinly sliced
  • 4-6 sprigs dill fresh
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 Lemon zest
  • 1 Lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp dill finely chopped, fresh
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • In a large, deep skillet or saucepan, pour in the fish or vegetable broth. The pan should be large enough to hold all the cod fillets without overcrowding.
  • Place the lemon slices and fresh dill sprigs in the broth.
  • Heat the broth over medium-high heat until it comes to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to low to maintain a gentle simmer.
  • Season the cod fillets with salt and pepper.
  • Carefully place the cod fillets into the simmering broth. Make sure the broth covers the fillets. If not, you can add a little more broth or water.
  • Poach the cod for about 5-7 minutes, or until it becomes opaque and easily flakes with a fork. The cooking time may vary depending on the thickness of the fillets.
  • Using a slotted spatula, carefully remove the poached cod fillets from the broth and set them aside on a serving plate.
  • In a small bowl, combine the Greek yogurt, lemon zest, lemon juice, fresh dill, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all the ingredients are fully incorporated.
  • Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning, adding more salt, pepper, or lemon juice as needed.
  • Drizzle the lemon dill sauce over the poached cod fillets
  • Garnish with additional fresh dill and lemon slices if desired.
  • Serve the poached cod with your choice of side dishes, such as steamed vegetables, rice, or a fresh green salad.

I followed it mostly, but I didn’t have fresh dill so I used dried. Still okay, but definitely less “garden-y.” Next time I’ll splurge for fresh.

    1. 4 stars
Dried dill can be a little sad 😅. I usually use it too, but I add a pinch more and let it sit in the yogurt a few minutes so the flavor wakes up.

    2. 5 stars
Totally makes sense about the dried dill—fresh is so much more “alive” in this kind of sauce. Glad it still worked though!

  2. 5 stars
Wow, this was absolutely delicious! The lemon dill sauce was perfect with the cod. Will definitely make again!

    1. User avatar Dan Streetmentioner says:

      3 stars
This looks good and all, but poaching fish? Sounds too fancy for me. Can you just fry it instead?

    2. 5 stars
I’m glad you liked it! The lemon dill sauce is one of my favorites too. Have you tried it with salmon?

  3. User avatar ossie.senger says:

    2 stars
Isn’t cod fishy? My fish was too bland for my taste. 🤔

  4. User avatar Emily Saunders says:

    5 stars
Made this tonight and it was surprisingly restaurant-y. The yogurt-lemon-dill sauce is tangy without being too sour. Cod stayed flaky and tender.

  5. 3 stars
Eh, was kinda bland. I was expecting more flavor. The yogurt sauce didn’t help much either.

    1. User avatar izetta.watsica says:

      4 stars
I get what you mean! I thought it was a bit bland too. Maybe next time I’ll add some spices or chili flakes to kick it up a notch.

  6. User avatar hans.armstrong40 says:

    2 stars
Not my fave. I think I prefer my fish fried, this was just not it for me.

  7. User avatar sharie.abshire83 says:

    5 stars
OMG! Just had this for dinner last night, and it was to die for! Highly recommend!!!

  8. 2 stars
Is garlic really needed? I think it overpowered the delicate flavor of the cod.

  9. User avatar freddie.rowe79 says:

    2 stars
Eh, it was okay. I thought it would be more flavorful. Maybe I overcooked the fish? Not sure I’ll try it again.

  10. User avatar shawanda.graham2016 says:

    4 stars
I’m not sure about poaching time. Mine were thin and took closer to 4-5 minutes, and 7 would’ve dried them out. Otherwise flavor was great and the garlic isn’t overpowering.

  11. User avatar earnest.parker1994 says:

    5 stars
Best part is the cook time. 5–7 minutes is so manageable. I served it with rice and steamed broccoli and it felt restaurant-level. 10/10.

  12. 4 stars
Easy to follow, but I used frozen cod and it didn’t flake well.

    1. User avatar keneth.pfeffer says:

      4 stars
Frozen fish can be tricky! Maybe try fresh next time. Still, good job on the recipe!

  13. User avatar alaine.gulgowski2 says:

    5 stars
This recipe is amazing! The lemon and dill combo makes the cod so refreshing. My family devoured it!

  14. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    4 stars
Not a fan of fish, but my husband loved it. I might give it another try with different fish.

  15. 3 stars
“4 cups broth” felt like a lot for only 24 oz cod. I used a bit less and everything still poached fine. Also needed more salt than suggested.

    1. User avatar Deangelo Cruickshank Sr. says:

      4 stars
I followed it exactly and found the 4 cups made it almost like a little soup. Still tasty, but next time I’d scale down unless my pan is deeper.

    2. User avatar nigel.feest says:

      5 stars
Good catch on the broth amount—my cod was totally fine with less too. I wonder if thinner fillets need less coverage than thicker ones?

  16. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    5 stars
This tastes fancy for how easy it is. I served it with rice and broccoli and felt like I was at a restaurant.

  17. User avatar detra.mayert70 says:

    4 stars
I liked the flavor, but my sauce came out a little too thin—maybe my yogurt was lower-fat. Still good though, and the fish didn’t dry out.

  18. User avatar Tess Block says:

    3 stars
I messed up the broth with too much garlic. Oops! But still edible haha.

    1. User avatar loan.robel1992 says:

      5 stars
      Too much garlic? I don’t think that’s possible! 😂

    2. 4 stars
Garlic ain’t that bad! Just use less next time. Glad it’s still edible! 🍽️

  19. User avatar madelaine.ebert2004 says:

    3 stars
It was ok. Kinda basic? I might add some cheese next time, make it more interesting.

  20. User avatar grover.beatty83 says:

    5 stars
This is one of those recipes that sounds fancy but is actually easy. I added some blackened pepper because I’m me and it worked. 5 stars!

    1. User avatar jeffery.mccullough1987 says:

      5 stars
Love this—poached cod is so forgiving. I might add a pinch of smoked paprika, but otherwise looks spot on.

    2. 5 stars
“Sounds fancy” is right 😂 I made something similar and it was way easier than expected. Lemon + dill is such a win!

  21. User avatar tenisha.hand says:

    2 stars
I tried this but the fish wasn’t cooked right. Should’ve been longer I guess?

  22. 2 stars
Too much lemon for me. Calamity, I think! Could I reduce it next time?

  23. User avatar jeniffer.raynor21 says:

    2 stars
Honestly? Too lemony for me. Also, my dill was kinda old so the flavor was weak. If you love citrus, you’ll probably love it.

  24. User avatar kiara.welch87 says:

    3 stars
Easy to make, but I think I overcooked the fish. It turned out kinda rubbery. Next time less time on the stove!

  25. User avatar jacque.koepp35 says:

    5 stars
I made this for my mom’s birthday dinner and she loved it! The sauce was a hit! Healthy and yummy! Thanks for sharing!

    1. User avatar stephen.armstrong51 says:

      5 stars
So glad your mom enjoyed it! That’s awesome! The sauce really does make it special. Will definitely try this for my family!

    2. User avatar Effrafax of Wug says:

      2 stars
I dunno… poaching fish sounds kinda boring. Can’t I just grill it instead? Or is that a sin or something? 🤨

  26. User avatar jimmie.yundt1985 says:

    3 stars
I’m not sure about poaching fish. Seems weird, but I gave it a try. It was okay, I guess.

  27. User avatar johnie.collier1961 says:

    1 star
Why would you use yogurt? That’s not how you make fish sauce! I think this is wrong. Definitely not impressed.

  28. 1 star
Can I use chicken instead of fish? Asking for a friend who don’t like cod.

  29. User avatar Restless Draugr says:

    4 stars
I’m not sure about poaching…what’s the difference between poaching and boiling? 🤔

  30. User avatar carri.mitchell says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, I found the sauce a little sharp. Next time I’ll use less lemon juice or add a pinch more salt—maybe that fixes it.

  31. 3 stars
Good recipe but where the heck do I get fresh dill? It’s hard to find! Otherwise, fine.

  32. User avatar Dwarven Shpere says:

    4 stars
Absolutely loved the lemon dill sauce! Will use it on chicken too. Yummy!

  33. 2 stars
The sauce tasted weirdly metallic to me? I used dried dill once instead of fresh and maybe that’s on me, but I won’t lie—wasn’t love.

  34. User avatar basementDweller says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical about poaching in broth, but it worked. I added a splash more lemon juice at the end and it really brightened everything.

    1. User avatar yelena.schowalter says:

      5 stars
Glad it worked for you! I always thought poaching was “too delicate,” but the lemon + dill really does magic on cod. Next time I might try your extra splash tip.

  35. 3 stars
I followed it mostly, but I used dried dill and it tasted kinda flat. Fresh dill really matters here.

  36. User avatar doretha.mitchell52 says:

    4 stars
I don’t usually cook fish, but the instructions were clear. One question: do I really need Greek yogurt or will sour cream work? Still, delicious results.

  37. User avatar Dorcas Crona Sr. says:

    4 stars
Question: do you strain out the lemon slices/dill from the broth before adding cod? I just dumped everything in and it was fine but the sauce might be better if the flavors are cleaner.

    1. 4 stars
I don’t strain it—just pull the cod, then whisk everything into the yogurt sauce. The lemon-dill bits make it taste more “bright” to me.

    2. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

      5 stars
If you like a totally smooth sauce, strain the broth after poaching. But honestly the little flecks of dill/lemon help the flavor. My sauce was better when I left them in.

  38. User avatar tad.haley87 says:

    2 stars
Why do you have to simmer it? Sounds like it would just fall apart. I just pan-fried mine!

  39. User avatar Clemencia Bruen says:

    2 stars
Too much lemon for my taste. I like it mild. Maybe mix it with another fish instead?

  40. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    5 stars
Really nice and light. The yogurt sauce with the lemon and dill is super refreshing—felt restaurant-y without being hard.

  41. 4 stars
Super easy to make and healthy too! I added some capers for an extra kick.

  42. User avatar Daedric Prince says:

    4 stars
I struggle with cooking fish, but this was super easy! Thanks for the simple steps!

    1. User avatar ned.gutmann13 says:

      5 stars
So glad to hear you found it easy! Fish can be tricky, but this recipe makes it a breeze! 😊

    2. 3 stars
Wow, poached fish? Sounds fancy! But I’m not sure if I’d like the yogurt sauce. Just butter and lemon for me!

  43. User avatar Colin the Security Robot says:

    3 stars
Not bad! But I think 5-7 minutes is too vague—mine got a bit overcooked at 7. Still tasty with the sauce though.

  44. User avatar Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz says:

    5 stars
So good! The yogurt sauce is a great twist. I used salmon instead of cod and it worked too!

  45. 5 stars
5 stars! Simple but delicious. Would cook again!

  46. User avatar lakendra.hagenes32 says:

    3 stars
Tasted great but my kids didn’t like it. They said it was ‘too fishy’! Should I add more lemon next time?

  47. User avatar Moises Kutch says:

    3 stars
I messed up the zest part and used too much lemon juice… oops. Even then it was edible and kinda refreshing, but I’d follow measurements more closely.

  48. 4 stars
Simple and healthy! Didn’t have dill, used parsley instead. Still tasted good!

  49. 5 stars
This dish was fantastic! The lemon dill sauce really brings the cod to life. I’m definitely making this again!

  50. User avatar dennis.feest says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but I wish the recipe said whether to cover the pan or not. I didn’t, and the broth reduced a bit too much. Still tasty though.

  51. 5 stars
So easy to make! I never knew poaching could be this simple. Thanks for sharing!

    1. User avatar ben.schulist says:

      5 stars
I’m glad you found it easy! Poaching can be intimidating, but this recipe makes it much simpler. Can’t wait to try it myself!

  52. User avatar Corrupted Shade says:

    2 stars
meh… it was ok. I’m not really into yogurt, might skip that part next time.

  53. 5 stars
    so good

    1. User avatar greta.west28 says:

      5 stars
So good?? I believe it—lemon + dill + yogurt is such a clean combo. 😋

  54. 5 stars
Tried it for dinner and it was a hit! Light and refreshing – just what I need for the summer! 🌞

    1. User avatar louie.schmeler40 says:

      5 stars
So glad it worked out for you! This dish is perfect for summer, and the lemon dill sauce sounds divine! 🍋

    2. User avatar erika.kirlin95 says:

      2 stars
I dunno, poached fish sounds kinda boring. I prefer my fish grilled with a crispy skin! 😒

  55. 3 stars
Could you maybe use salmon instead? Cod was fine but it feels kind of boring without something crunchy on top.

    1. User avatar Mr. Eldon Olson says:

      5 stars
Salmon would definitely work! If you want crunchy on top, I’d try adding toasted breadcrumbs or even crushed crackers with a little olive oil and dill. Cod is gentle, but salmon has more flavor so it won’t feel boring.

    2. User avatar mikel.schroeder98 says:

      4 stars
Not sure about salmon—cod is kinda the point here. But yeah, crunchy would make it better. Maybe sprinkle some panko after plating and broil for like 1-2 minutes?

  56. 5 stars
This recipe is amazing! I loved the lemon dill sauce, it paired perfectly with the cod. Definitely a keeper! 😍

  57. User avatar hermelinda.jacobson53 says:

    5 stars
Delish! Made this with rice and it was a hit at my dinner party.

    1. User avatar bryce.wilderman2020 says:

      5 stars
That sounds amazing! I’ll have to try it myself. How did the sauce turn out?

  58. 1 star
Poached cod? More like boring cod. Won’t be making this again.

  59. User avatar king.schumm1981 says:

    3 stars
I found it a bit bland. Maybe try adding some spices or hot sauce next time?

  60. User avatar Dixie Strosin says:

    5 stars
Yummm!! The sauce is amazing! I want to put it on everything now.

  61. User avatar michaela.rutherford37 says:

    2 stars
I don’t know about you guys, but mine turned out super bland. I think I should have added more seasoning. Not sure if I’d make this again.

  62. User avatar aurora.ullrich says:

    5 stars
This poached cod is a game changer! The lemon dill sauce is so fresh and zesty. I added a bit of chili flakes for an extra kick! Will definitely make again. 😊

  63. 3 stars
Cod is so bland without flavor… why not use salmon? 🤷‍♂️

    1. User avatar edwardo.mccullough19 says:

      3 stars
Naaah, cod is fine. Just needs the right cookin! Add some spices and boom, flavor. Salmon is too oily for me.

    2. User avatar kiersten.jacobi says:

      4 stars
I think cod is really delicate and absorbs flavors well! The dill sauce should make it tasty. Salmon’s good too, but it has its own strong taste.

  64. 4 stars
I’m skeptical of poaching because cod usually turns rubbery for me, but this time it worked. Maybe it was the gentle simmer. Still, watch the time.

  65. User avatar chia.kshlerin says:

    5 stars
    5 outta 5 easy peasy! 🍋🐟

    1. 5 stars
Right?? That’s exactly how it feels—gentle simmer, flaky cod, and the lemon-dill yogurt sauce makes it restaurant-y 😋

  66. 4 stars
Followed it pretty much exactly. I did 6 minutes poaching and it was perfect. Next time I’ll add a tiny pinch of chili flakes just for kick.

    1. User avatar signe.koss says:

      5 stars
Nice! I love how forgiving poaching is—6 minutes for cod sounds spot on. The chili flakes idea is genius for a little contrast with all that lemon dill.

    2. User avatar arden.gutkowski99 says:

      4 stars
I tried this once and mine took closer to 9 minutes 😅. I think my fillets were thicker. Still tasted great though—yogurt sauce is really good.

  67. User avatar Meriadoc Brandybuck says:

    1 star
Too much lemon for me. I didn’t like it. 😒

  68. User avatar vanessa.mcglynn10 says:

    4 stars
Wow, this was so easy to make! I’ve never cooked cod before, but this was a total success! Plus, my kids ate it without complaining!

  69. User avatar Catharine Watsica says:

    2 stars
I accidentally used too much garlic and my sauce tasted kinda sharp, like toothpaste vibes 😅 I fixed it with more yogurt though.

  70. 3 stars
Poaching fish in broth with lemon and dill sounds good, but 5–7 minutes feels optimistic depending on thickness. Please specify if the fillets are thin/medium!

    1. 4 stars
I’ve made this and 5-7 worked for me, but mine were pretty thin. I’d love if the recipe said like “thin ~4-5 min, thick ~7-9 min.”

    2. User avatar joana.wolff97 says:

      5 stars
Agree on the timing—cod can go from perfect to dry fast. I usually start checking at 4 minutes for thin fillets. Medium might need closer to 6-7.

  71. User avatar jacquelyn.rutherford says:

    5 stars
This recipe is so easy and delish! My family loved it. Will make again.

  72. 4 stars
Followed the steps pretty much exactly. Cod flaked perfectly at around 6 minutes. Sauce was bright, not too heavy. Will cook again.

  73. User avatar noble.mohr31 says:

    2 stars
Honestly? It came out bland for me. I might’ve been too shy with salt/pepper. The lemon was there, but not enough punch.

  74. User avatar cassidy.prosacco67 says:

    5 stars
No fancy ingredients here! Just good ol’ cod and yogurt. Simple yet delish. Highly recommend for busy days! 🥳

  75. User avatar werner.rath76 says:

    3 stars
Not sure about poaching time. My fillets were thick and it took closer to 9 minutes. Other than that, good instructions.

    1. User avatar King Vegeta says:

      5 stars
Good point. Mine were pretty thin and 6 minutes nailed it, but I can see thick ones taking 8-10. This recipe’s got the right idea with the “flakes with a fork” cue.

    2. User avatar Charles Darwin says:

      5 stars
Thanks for sharing—thick fillets really do need longer. 9 minutes makes sense. I’ll stop watching the timer so much and go by opacity/flaking.

  76. User avatar roland.towne says:

    2 stars
Honestly, I found it a bit bland. I added some chili flakes but it still needed more flavor. Disappointed.

    1. 4 stars
I totally get what you mean! If you like spice, maybe try adding some garlic powder and lemon pepper next time. That could really kick it up a notch!

  77. 3 stars
I dunno, it was alright but the broth was too salty for me. 🤔

    1. 3 stars
Saltiness depends on the broth you choose. I used homemade and it was nice! 🤔

    2. User avatar kelli.collier1983 says:

      4 stars
I thought the broth was a bit on the salty side too! Maybe try using low-sodium broth next time? 🤷‍♀️

  78. User avatar rita.frami53 says:

    3 stars
Too many lemons for me, seemed overdone. But the cod was cooked nicely.

  79. User avatar rashida.gulgowski60 says:

    5 stars
Easiest recipe ever! The sauce is to die for. I could eat it with a spoon.

    1. User avatar amparo.reinger says:

      5 stars
I tried it and it was delicious! Definitely making it again. But I didn’t use Greek yogurt, had to use sour cream instead. Still turned out amazing!

  80. User avatar lacey.beatty54 says:

    2 stars
I tried this and the fish was undercooked! I followed the times but it was mushy 🤨.

    1. 4 stars
I had the same issue! Maybe your fillets were too thick? I always check for flakiness, it should be easy to break apart. 🤔

    2. User avatar carson.kunze88 says:

      2 stars
C’mon, how can it be mushy? Sounds like you didn’t poach it right. Follow the times, next time. 🐟

  81. 2 stars
I tried it and the sauce turned weirdly grainy (maybe my yogurt brand?). Could just be me, but the lemon zest + garlic combo felt too sharp overall. Cod was fine.

  82. User avatar royce.johns says:

    3 stars
Cod is expensive where I live so I tried it with pollock—came out fine, but the texture was a little softer. I’ll probably stick to real cod for company dinners.

  83. User avatar joette.tremblay1985 says:

    4 stars
Really good, but my garlic taste was strong. Next time I’ll use less garlic or mince it finer and whisk it longer into the yogurt.

    1. User avatar zane.purdy64 says:

Yeah, 1 clove can still punch through in yogurt—mincing fine (or even grating) definitely helps it melt in. Next time try starting with 1/2 clove too.

I am allergic to dill, what can I use instead? Anyone know? 🤷‍♂️

Loved the dill. My kitchen smelled amazing. Also, Greek yogurt sauce is way easier than making a whole cream sauce.

Yes! The dill + lemon combo is such a winner. My kitchen always smells like “fresh and fancy” after this.

Ugh, I burnt the garlic while prepping. The recipe says 1 clove but I think 1 was too less – it didn’t make much sauce.

I don’t usually cook fish at home but this was simple. The instructions are clear. Also, garlic in yogurt sauce?? Unexpectedly good.

Totally agree—poaching cod in broth is so much easier than people make it sound. And that garlic-yogurt lemon dill combo is genuinely a “why didn’t I think of that?” moment.

I’ve never added garlic to yogurt sauce before, but now I’m curious. Did you mince the garlic very fine so it doesn’t get too punchy?

I don’t understand why you would put yogurt on fish, sounds gross.

I followed it pretty closely, but I only had dried dill. Still good, though I’d use fresh next time. Also I simmered a bit too hot for the first minute—lesson learned: gentle simmer only.

Poached fish? Who even does that? Fry it instead, tastes way better! 😜

Nah, poached fish is just soggy. I tried it once and it was bleh. Frying is way better! ⚡

Frying is good, but poaching keeps it moist! Give it a shot, you might be surprised! 😊
