Mushroom Pasta

September 3, 2023

Mushroom pasta is a rich and comforting dish that brings together earthy mushrooms, creamy sauce, and al dente pasta for a perfect meal. This dish is ideal for mushroom lovers and anyone craving a hearty yet simple dinner. The mushrooms provide a deep umami flavor, while the creamy sauce adds richness, making every bite irresistible.

To prepare this mushroom pasta, start by sautĂ©ing your choice of fresh mushrooms in olive oil or butter until they’re golden and tender. You can use a variety of mushrooms such as cremini, shiitake, or button mushrooms to bring different textures and flavors. Once the mushrooms are cooked, add garlic, fresh thyme, or rosemary for extra fragrance and depth. Then, stir in cream or a combination of cream and Parmesan cheese to create a luscious sauce that clings to the pasta.

While the sauce is simmering, cook your pasta of choice, such as fettuccine, spaghetti, or penne, until it’s al dente. Once the pasta is ready, toss it in the creamy mushroom sauce, ensuring it’s evenly coated. For a finishing touch, garnish with grated Parmesan and fresh herbs like parsley or basil for added flavor and color.

This dish can be customized by adding protein, such as grilled chicken or shrimp, for a heartier meal. It can also be made vegetarian-friendly by using plant-based cream and cheese substitutes. Mushroom pasta is perfect for weeknight dinners or when you want to impress guests with a simple yet elegant dish. It’s quick, filling, and full of comforting flavors that everyone will love.

Mmm! So creamy and delicious! I added some crushed red pepper for a kick!

    1. 2 stars
Why would you ruin a nice cream sauce with pepper??? That’s just wrong.

    2. 5 stars
That sounds amazing! I love adding a little heat to my dishes! Can’t wait to try this recipe.

  2. User avatar brenton.walsh says:

The garlic step is key—mine got a little too browned because I multitasked, but it still tasted good. Not mad.

  3. 5 stars
Made this tonight—so creamy and comforting. The mushrooms really carried the flavor once they browned. I added a pinch of nutmeg too and it was perfect. 10/10 for weeknights.

  4. User avatar christian.nienow1973 says:

    3 stars
I tried it with dried parsley bc I didn’t have fresh—didn’t look as good but tasted okay. Next time I’ll get fresh parsley for presentation.

  5. User avatar Bowerick Wowbagger says:

    4 stars
Yum! The creaminess is superb, but I think I added too much garlic. The basic steps are easy to follow. Will definitely try again!

  6. 5 stars
This is my kind of recipe. Simple ingredients, big payoff. The parmesan + cream combo is legit.

  7. User avatar lindsay.boyle68 says:

    4 stars
I thought 8 ounces pasta might be too little for a pound of mushrooms, but the ratio actually works. The mushrooms shrink down and the sauce clings well.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—mushrooms cook down a lot. I like that the cream + Parmesan clings instead of getting watery. Glad the ratio works for you!

    2. User avatar jimmie.lind1984 says:

      4 stars
I was skeptical too, but “toss to coat” really matters. Mine came out a little thick at first, then loosened up after the pasta hit the sauce. Delicious.

  8. User avatar thad.treutel says:

    2 stars
Wasn’t my cup of tea. Maybe next time try adding bacon for more flavor. Just saying!

  9. User avatar regina.olson44 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but mine felt a little bland even with salt/pepper. Maybe I didn’t use enough parmesan? Still creamy and tasty, just needed something extra like a squeeze of lemon or more garlic.

    1. User avatar neville.roberts says:

      4 stars
Maybe try salting the pasta water too? I’m not saying you did, but if you only season at the end, it can taste flat even with extra salt/pepper. Add lemon or a pinch of chili flakes and you’ll be golden.

    2. User avatar irena.kunze1970 says:

      5 stars
I totally get that—mushrooms + cream can be a little “meh” without a bright note. I started adding a tiny squeeze of lemon at the end and it made a big difference. Also, I usually bump the parmesan up to closer to 3/4 cup.

  10. User avatar erich.nienow1962 says:

    4 stars
Not bad at all. I used half-and-half because that’s what I had, and it was still tasty, just a little thinner. Next time I’ll stick to heavy cream for sure.

  11. User avatar maurice.romaguera62 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but I found it needed a little more salt than the recipe said. Also cooked the mushrooms a bit longer for extra color.

  12. User avatar valerie.cummings says:

    4 stars
Yum! Simple and quick to make, I added some spinach for extra color. Will definitely make again!

    1. User avatar jaime.kunze says:

      5 stars
Sounds delicious! Adding spinach is a great idea for color and nutrients. Can’t wait to try it myself!

  13. 5 stars
Made this tonight and it was actually restaurant-level. The mushrooms got so golden, and the sauce thickened perfectly. Added a little extra parmesan and it was even better.

  14. 3 stars
The directions are simple but I wish it mentioned how to keep the mushrooms from steaming instead of browning. I overcrowded the pan once.

  15. User avatar donald.littel says:

    4 stars
The recipe says 5-7 mins for mushrooms; mine took closer to 10 because I crowded the pan. Once I gave them space, they turned out golden and not watery.

  16. User avatar waylon.mayert1999 says:

    3 stars
I tried, but my sauce separated a bit. I think I turned the heat too high when adding the cream. Still edible, just not silky. Will retry lower heat.

    1. 4 stars
Mine did that once too, but I swear it was because I didn’t whisk the cream in slow enough 😅 Try stirring constantly and maybe grate the parm super fine so it melts smoothly.

    2. User avatar Super Saiyan Trunks says:

      5 stars
That sounds exactly like a classic “cream + heat” issue. Glad it was still edible though! Next time, keep it on low and add the cream after the mushrooms/garlic are off the hottest part of the burner.

  17. User avatar rolf.hoeger says:

    5 stars
5 stars! I used pre-sliced mushrooms and it still came out super tasty. Also
parsley is totally necessary, right? Cuz I added extra and felt fancy lol.

  18. 5 stars
This feels like one of those recipes that’s simple but you can mess up easily—luckly I didn’t! Garlic + mushrooms = win. Would recommend.

  19. User avatar carter.macgyver89 says:

    4 stars
Followed it pretty much exactly—needed a little extra Parmesan for more flavor, but otherwise great weeknight dinner. Took less time than I expected.

    1. User avatar Falmer Shadowmaster says:

      3 stars
I tried this and it was okay
mushrooms tasted good but my sauce turned kinda thin. Maybe my cream was lower fat? Still, not bad for a weeknight.

    2. User avatar Felix Mayer says:

      5 stars
Glad it worked for you! I always end up adding a bit more Parmesan too—makes it way more flavorful. Also love that it’s faster than expected for a creamy pasta.

  20. 2 stars
This was mid. Like it’s okay, but not special. Also 8 ounces pasta for a pound of mushrooms seems a little off unless you really love mushrooms (I don’t that much).

  21. User avatar ebony.hoeger2014 says:

    2 stars
Pasta is pasta. đŸ€·â€â™‚ïž It’s okay I guess.

  22. User avatar jamaal.leuschke38 says:

I think there’s too much cream in this recipe. My gut hurts after eating it. Just my opinion though!

  23. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    5 stars
This turned out creamy and super comforting. The mushrooms browned nicely and the garlic smell was unreal. I added a pinch of chili flakes and it was perfect.

  24. User avatar basil.johns72 says:

    3 stars
I had to tweak it a bit, used almond milk instead of cream. Came out decent. Pretty good!

  25. User avatar erlene.bergnaum63 says:

    3 stars
I’m not a fan of mushrooms, but my husband is. He loved this, I’ll just stick to my marinara next time.

  26. User avatar harvey.kris says:

    5 stars
Made this last night—so creamy and comforting. The mushrooms got nice and browned, and the garlic didn’t taste harsh at all. I added a pinch of chili flakes and it was perfect.

  27. 5 stars
Made this tonight—so creamy and cozy. The mushrooms browned nicely and the garlic smell is unreal. I added a little extra pepper and it was perfect.

  28. 5 stars
This was quick and easy. Perfect for a weeknight dinner. My kids scarfed it down! Will add some chicken next time.

    1. User avatar jonathan.oconnell says:

      3 stars
I dunno about adding chicken. Isn’t this a pasta dish with mushrooms? But if your kids liked it, then who cares? lol.

    2. 5 stars
Glad to hear your kids loved it! Adding chicken sounds like a great idea. I bet it will be even more filling!

  29. User avatar dia.stiedemann65 says:

    4 stars
This is delicious, but 1 pound of mushrooms feels like a lot (in a good way). I used cremini and they browned nicely.

    1. User avatar sabine.fritsch2009 says:

      5 stars
I feel the same. I was like “dang that’s a lot” but it turns out it makes the sauce way better. Cremini are perfect for this.

    2. User avatar cruz.blanda1950 says:

      5 stars
Agreed—1 lb mushrooms is the sweet spot. Creamy sauce + those browned bits is sooo good.

  30. User avatar steve_maga says:

    1 star
I actually burnt the garlic, lol. Don’t make my mistake!

  31. User avatar aldo.wilkinson41 says:

    5 stars
This turned out so creamy and comforting. The mushrooms browned nicely and the garlic smell was amazing. I added a pinch of red pepper flakes—10/10.

  32. User avatar aldo.spinka3 says:

    5 stars
This is my new go-to. It’s restaurant-y without being complicated. I did whole wheat pasta and it worked fine.

    1. User avatar liberal.hero says:

      5 stars
Yes! Whole wheat is totally doable—glad it worked for you. I’ve found the garlic + golden-brown mushrooms combo really makes it taste “restaurant-y.” Next time I might try adding a pinch of nutmeg with the cream.

  33. User avatar Su Shenlong says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but my sauce got a little too thick and grainy (maybe I used pre-grated parmesan). Next time I’ll grate it fresh and warm the cream more gently. Still tasty though.

    1. User avatar brandon.renner23 says:

      5 stars
Ah, that sounds exactly like the pre-grated Parmesan culprit—sometimes it has anti-caking agents and it can make the sauce go grainy. Warming the cream more gently is a great call. When I do this, I also pull the pan off heat right before adding cheese and stir until smooth.

  34. User avatar milan.kautzer35 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was worried about the heavy cream + parmesan combo, but it actually worked. The texture was restaurant-y. Next time I might add red pepper flakes.

    1. 5 stars
I had the same worry with the cream + parm, but totally agree—when it thickens, it gets that creamy restaurant vibe. Red pepper flakes would be đŸ”„.

  35. User avatar antonio.hauck says:

    2 stars
I don’t understand the fuss. The flavor was kinda bland. Maybe I used the wrong mushrooms? Not what I expected.

  36. User avatar adelina.kerluke1956 says:

    2 stars
How can you call this mushroom pasta when the amount of mushrooms is so little?! You need more mushrooms for a real flavor.

  37. 5 stars
The garlic step is underrated—cooking it after the mushrooms makes it taste less sharp. Love that.

  38. User avatar joaquin.ryan56 says:

    5 stars
I was skeptical about 1 cup heavy cream for 1 pound mushrooms, but it worked! Next time I’ll add some sautĂ©ed onions for depth.

  39. User avatar kary.schaden says:

    2 stars
Kinda bland for me. I had to add way more salt and pepper than the recipe says. Garlic flavor also felt muted, maybe because my mushrooms weren’t browning enough.

    1. User avatar leone.doyle15 says:

      4 stars
Hmm, I get that. If the mushrooms don’t brown, the whole sauce can taste a bit flat. I usually cook them closer to 10 minutes and don’t crowd the pan.

  40. User avatar isreal.halvorson73 says:

    3 stars
I used pre-sliced mushrooms because I was lazy (okay, tired). They released a lot of water, so I think I needed more time to get them golden. Sauce was fine though—just a bit thinner than expected.

  41. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    3 stars
Can I use canned mushrooms? I don’t have fresh ones.

  42. 3 stars
I really wanted to love this dish, but it was too creamy for my taste. Might try it again with less cream next time.

  43. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    4 stars
The sauce thickened beautifully, but I think 3-4 minutes is a bit optimistic depending on your heat. I let mine go like 6 minutes. Still delicious.

    1. User avatar lashaun.macejkovic49 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—mine thickened closer to 5-6 minutes too, especially since I used a slightly lower heat. Glad it still worked out though! 🍄

    2. User avatar Lumberjack says:

      3 stars
Hmm I think 3-4 min should be enough? Maybe you over-thought it. If it doesn’t thicken fast, just add more parmesan and it’ll fix it. I’ve done it.

  44. User avatar elva.russel84 says:

    3 stars
I liked the idea, but mine came out a bit too salty. Could be my parmesan brand. Maybe go lighter on the salt until after the sauce simmers.

  45. User avatar ariel.hirthe says:

    5 stars
Wow. That sauce is like a hug. Would totally make again—maybe with broccoli or spinach mixed in.

    1. 5 stars
Aww that description is perfect 😂 The broccoli or spinach idea is also spot on—I’d toss it in at the end so it stays bright. Thanks for the suggestion!

  46. 4 stars
I used dried parsley because I didn’t have fresh—still tasty, just not as fresh-looking. Flavor is solid though, especially with the parmesan.

  47. User avatar carissa.blick20 says:

    5 stars
YUM! So easy to whip up. Used rigatoni instead of spaghetti for a change and it rocked!

  48. User avatar miyoko.oreilly says:

    2 stars
I followed it exactly and it still turned out kinda watery 😕. Also my mushrooms released a ton of liquid, so I should’ve cooked them longer. Still ate it, just not the best texture.

  49. User avatar Spriggan Matron says:

    3 stars
Idk about this one. The sauce was too heavy for me, couldn’t finish my plate. Maybe I’m just not a cream person.

  50. User avatar kerrie.kuhic54 says:

    3 stars
    Ehh
mushrooms can be hit-or-miss for me. I think I sliced mine too thick because they took longer than 7 minutes. Ended up adjusting with extra cook time.

    1. 5 stars
That makes sense—mushrooms totally vary by thickness and moisture. If they needed longer than 7 minutes, you basically did the right adjustment. Mine do the same if I don’t slice them thin.

    2. User avatar Dominic Vernius says:

      3 stars
      Wait
7 minutes should be enough? I tried this once and my mushrooms were still watery after 10, so I just cranked the heat. Also maybe you used the wrong kind of mushrooms? (button vs cremini matters).

  51. User avatar joaquin.kovacek says:

    5 stars
I followed it exactly and it turned out amazing. The sauce thickened just right—my husband went back for seconds (rare!).

  52. 4 stars
Quick question: do you really need 8 oz pasta for 1 lb mushrooms? I ended up with way more sauce than pasta but still ate it all lol.

    1. User avatar lashay.stamm1988 says:

      5 stars
I think 8 oz pasta is a pretty standard amount for 1 lb mushrooms. If you like it saucier, your version sounds perfect 😄

  53. User avatar esperanza.heidenreich40 says:

    2 stars
Eh, not my favorite. Seemed a bit bland. I think it needs more garlic or some spices!

  54. User avatar rich.landlord says:

    2 stars
Way too much cream. I felt like I was eating pasta soup. Also I forgot to drain the pasta (oops) and it was a mess—still, the flavors were good.

    1. User avatar adrienne.tromp1962 says:

      4 stars
Oops on the pasta—been there. But honestly if the flavors were good, that’s what matters. For fixes: drain well, and if it’s still loose, add a bit more parm or cook the sauce uncovered to reduce.

    2. User avatar Leto II Atreides says:

      4 stars
Ahh I totally get that “pasta soup” feeling 😅 The cream is the main body of the sauce—next time try cutting it down to 3/4 cup or even 1/2 cup, or simmer a bit longer to thicken.

  55. User avatar keneth.aufderhar says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, I burnt the garlic for like 20 seconds 😅 but I saved it by starting fresh. Flavor was still good.

  56. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    4 stars
I don’t usually cook but this was pretty simple and tastes good. Will try again!

  57. User avatar Grunthos the Flatulent says:

    2 stars
Boring. Like, it tastes like “pasta with stuff.” No offense, but I wanted more flavor—maybe add thyme or a pinch of nutmeg next time.

  58. 3 stars
Not bad, but I think it needs something acidic? Like lemon juice or a tiny splash of white wine to cut the richness.

  59. User avatar goldfish says:

    4 stars
The instructions are clear, but I wish it said when to salt the mushrooms. I ended up salting them and the final dish tasted way more balanced.

  60. User avatar Pit Wolf says:

    3 stars
Not sure about 3-4 minutes for thickening—mine barely changed and I ended up simmering longer. Once it finally came together it was good, but that part felt off. Would recommend stirring constantly.

  61. 4 stars
Pretty good, but 5-7 minutes wasn’t enough for my mushrooms. I had to keep cooking until the liquid cooked off. Once I did that, the sauce thickened nicely.

  62. User avatar duncan.cormier2015 says:

    5 stars
This is the BEST pasta recipe I’ve ever tried! So creamy and delicious, my kids loved it too! 😍

  63. 2 stars
Too much cream in my opinion. I like mushrooms, but it got kind of heavy. Maybe half-and-half would be better.

  64. User avatar zella.bernier12 says:

I don’t understand why people love mushroom pasta so much. I made it and it tasted like watery sadness. Maybe my oven broke or something? Anyway, wouldn’t repeat.

Made this tonight—so creamy and comforting. The mushrooms went perfectly golden and the garlic flavor really popped. I added a pinch of chili flakes and it was chef’s kiss.

    1. User avatar mack.damore3 says:

Yum! I love how the mushrooms get that golden color—makes all the difference. I bet the chili flakes add a great little kick.

Not gonna lie, I thought it’d be bland. The mushrooms carried it though. Also garlic in step 2 was clutch.
