Lemon Garlic Tuna Cakes

August 13, 2025

Lemon garlic tuna cakes are a bright, flavorful, and protein-packed dish that can be enjoyed as an appetizer, light lunch, or main course. They bring together the fresh zing of lemon, the savory depth of garlic, and the satisfying texture of tuna into small, golden-brown patties that are crisp on the outside and tender inside.

The base of the cakes is typically made with canned tuna, which is both affordable and convenient. It is mixed with breadcrumbs or crushed crackers for structure, an egg to bind everything, and seasonings that make the flavors pop. Lemon zest and juice add freshness, while garlic provides a warm, savory note. Fresh herbs like parsley or dill can also be added for extra brightness.

Forming the mixture into small patties, just like with crab cakes, allows them to cook quickly, developing a nice sear that enhances both flavor and texture. A light pan-fry in olive oil is often the preferred method, giving them a crisp exterior while keeping the inside moist. They can also be baked if you want a lighter version with less oil.

Lemon garlic tuna cakes are versatile when it comes to serving. They can be paired with a simple green salad for a quick meal, tucked into a sandwich or wrap, or served with dipping sauces like tartar sauce, garlic aioli, or a yogurt-based dressing. The citrus and garlic combination works well with a variety of sides, from roasted vegetables to light pasta dishes.

One of the best things about this recipe is how easy it is to adapt. You can use flavored tuna varieties, experiment with different herbs, or add finely chopped vegetables like bell peppers or scallions to the mix. They are also great for meal prep, as the mixture can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator until you are ready to cook.

With their zesty aroma, satisfying texture, and balanced flavors, lemon garlic tuna cakes are proof that simple ingredients can come together to create a dish that feels fresh, wholesome, and full of character.

Not bad, but I couldn’t taste the lemon much. Maybe I should’ve used more lemon juice?

    1. 5 stars
Yeah, I think more lemon juice would definitely help! I used like 2 tablespoons and it turned out awesome!

  9. User avatar Cris Reichel says:

    4 stars
I’m skeptical—1 clove garlic seems like it might be too little, but I went with it. Actually perfect! Balanced, not harsh.

    1. User avatar johnsie.gaylord22 says:

      5 stars
Same! I expected the garlic to be too weak but it actually brightens everything without being harsh. Great call on the lemon too.

Tuna cakes? Really? I was skeptical but I guess they’re okay. Not a huge fan of tuna.

  13. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

My friend said it was too lemony, but I liked it! Who doesn’t love lemon? Anyway, yum!

  14. User avatar renetta.gerlach48 says:

    5 stars
These turned out way better than I expected. The lemon really brightens up the tuna, and the garlic flavor isn’t overpowering. I’ll make these again for sure.

  15. User avatar raymond.jakubowski7 says:

    5 stars
These were surprisingly good! I used Italian breadcrumbs because that’s all I had, and they turned out great!

  16. 1 star
Tuna is gross, these cakes are bad. Never makin’ this again.🤢

    1. 4 stars
I’m sorry you didn’t like them! 😞 I love tuna cakes! Maybe try using different spices next time?

  18. User avatar ashlie.bergstrom90 says:

    2 stars
This recipe is just tuna and bread, I’m not impressed. Plus, why do we need lemon for fish??

  19. 5 stars
These came out so flavorful—lemon really brightens the tuna. I added a little extra garlic and it still wasn’t overpowering. Will definitely make again.

  20. User avatar jeffrey.kessler40 says:

    5 stars
Super easy to make! I added some cheese and it was bomb. 😍

  21. 3 stars
Not bad, but I expected more flavor. Seemed kinda bland to me. Maybe more garlic next time?

  22. User avatar ettie.lind says:

    3 stars
Lemon? Garlic? Sounds fancy, but I just used leftovers and it still made a decent meal.

  23. 3 stars
I dunno, I thought they would be better. Kinda bland to me. Maybe more spices next time?

    1. User avatar tanner.marquardt says:

      3 stars
Bland? Nah! I thought they were super tasty! Just depends on what you like.

    2. 4 stars
I totally agree! They need a kick. Maybe add some chili flakes next time?

  24. User avatar carolynn.goyette7 says:

These tuna cakes are so yummy! I didn’t even need sauce. 🍋

  26. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    5 stars

Can I use canned salmon instead of tuna? 🤔

    1. User avatar lonny.corwin2016 says:

      4 stars
Yes, you can use canned salmon! It should work just fine, but the taste will be a bit different than tuna.

  28. User avatar Anna Prentice says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but I think the breadcrumbs are a bit low. Next time I’ll add a touch more so they hold shape better.

  29. User avatar estefana.schowalter says:

    4 stars
Tasty, but I had to add a little more breadcrumb because my mixture felt too wet. Once I adjusted the texture, they browned nicely. Good weeknight meal.

  30. 5 stars
Really good! My kids ate it and asked for seconds. I’ll double the batch next time.

    1. User avatar Tish Hughes says:

      5 stars
Aw that’s awesome—seconds from the kids is the best compliment 😂. Doubling it next time sounds perfect!

  31. User avatar diana.hahn60 says:

    3 stars
Can you really call them cakes? They’re just patties. 🙄

  32. 1 star
This recipe sux! I tried it but everything fell apart and it was a mess. Never again!!

    1. User avatar hortense.armstrong5 says:

      3 stars
I had the same problem with mine! I think it must be the mixing, you gotta really get in there. Maybe try adding more breadcrumbs next time.

    2. User avatar pat.schinner says:

      4 stars
Tuna cakes are tricky! They shouldn’t fall apart if ya make sure the egg is mixed good. I hope you give it another chance!

  33. 3 stars
Easy peasy! I used leftover tuna and it was grate. But like, next time, I might try flounder instead??

  34. User avatar Spider Worker says:

    1 star
Did not come out as expected. The mixture was too wet, ended up as a mushy mess. Not doing this again.

  35. User avatar marylyn.breitenberg54 says:

    2 stars
Not sure what I did wrong, but mine fell apart while cooking. Any tips would be great.

  36. User avatar Blue Dartwing says:

    4 stars
I was a bit skeptical at first since I don’t usually cook with tuna, but these turned out surprisingly good! Great flavor.

  37. User avatar lemuel.hartmann says:

    1 star
Yuck! Did not like at all. The lemon was too much for me and the texture was weird. Won’t be making again.

    1. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

      3 stars
I dunno, they were really good to me! Maybe you didn’t cook them right? More garlic next time!

    2. User avatar burton.bernhard9 says:

      5 stars
I actually loved them! The lemon gives it such a fresh taste. Sorry you didn’t enjoy it!

  38. User avatar Draugr Thrall says:

    4 stars
Easy to make! My kids loved them, even my picky eater. Will make again!

  39. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    4 stars
Do you think it would work with non-tuna seafood? Like salmon? 🤷‍♀️

  40. 3 stars
Ok but… why breadcrumbs AND egg? Mine held together fine though. I’m not mad. The parsley makes it feel fancy.

  41. 5 stars
I made these and served with a lemony yogurt sauce—10/10 combo. The patties were golden and not dry at all.

  42. User avatar buster.kerluke5 says:

    4 stars
Quick and tasty! I used canned tuna in oil, and it worked just fine. Nice idea for lunch. 👍

  43. User avatar antoine.kuphal says:

    4 stars
I threw in some corn and it turned out great! My kids loved it, which is a win in my book.

  44. User avatar kristal.bergnaum2024 says:

    5 stars
So quick! I served them with a lemony yogurt sauce and they disappeared fast. 10/10 would cook again.

    1. User avatar Falmer Nightprowler says:

      5 stars
Yes!! The lemony yogurt sauce sounds perfect. I made these once and they were gone faster than I expected too—such a good weeknight win.

  45. 5 stars
So quick and easy! I’m not a chef but I nailed this one! 👍

    1. User avatar Alesha Gutmann says:

      3 stars
I dunno… tuna cakes? Sounds kinda weird. Are they really good?

    5 stars
These tuna cakes are absolutely delicious! I followed the recipe exactly and they turned out fantastic. Thank you!

  48. User avatar fumiko.bartoletti65 says:

    5 stars
These turned out so good—crispy on the outside and still tender inside. The lemon + garlic is a winning combo. I didn’t even add extra sauce, just a squeeze of lemon.

    1. User avatar michael.beer says:

      3 stars
I tried it but mine were a bit dry, maybe because I mixed too long? Also I think 2-3 inches is big—mine fell apart a little in the pan. Still good though!

    2. User avatar stefan.bernier32 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! I did the same—lemon + garlic really makes the tuna taste way less “fishy.” Crispy outside is the goal and this nailed it.

  49. User avatar Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta says:

    2 stars
I used too much garlic and it overpowered everything. If you’re garlic-sensitive, go a little lighter.

  50. 5 stars
These came out super tasty—bright lemon with the garlic is such a good combo. I used panko and they were still easy to form.

    1. User avatar leandro.koepp says:

      3 stars
I tried this once and it was kinda… meh. I think 2-3 inches is too big? Mine fell apart. Also I used lemon zest but maybe too much garlic? Still tasted okay though.

    2. User avatar antionette.king says:

      5 stars
Yes!! Lemon + garlic totally makes tuna cakes feel fancy. I always worry mine will be bland, but your combo sounds spot on—nice that panko still held together too.

  51. User avatar logan.morar52 says:

    2 stars
Idk why mine came out kinda dry. Maybe I cooked them too long? Still good flavor though. Also the garlic was strong like wow.

  52. 2 stars
Not sure I get the hype—tuna cakes always taste kinda fishy to me, even with lemon. The lemon helped, but I still wasn’t wowed.

  53. 2 stars
This recipe is just okay. I added too much garlic; ruined it for me. 😕

  54. 4 stars
Quick dinner idea! I just threw everything together and fried them up. Even my kids ate them!

  55. User avatar trang.mayer says:

    2 stars
I tried this recipe but it didn’t come out right. I think my tuna was too old? 🤔

  56. User avatar polly.trantow94 says:

    2 stars
Can you really call these cakes? They feel more like fish balls. But hey, they taste fine.

  57. User avatar dane.heller1961 says:

    5 stars
These turned out amazing! Super easy to make and a hit with the family. Will definitely make again. 5 stars!

    1. User avatar carl.bartoletti63 says:

      3 stars
They look good, but is tuna really healthy? I always heard it can have a lot of mercury. Just curious…

    2. User avatar stewart.wisoky says:

      5 stars
Glad to hear they turned out great! I love simple recipes like this. Gonna try it this weekend!

  58. User avatar paulita.larkin1987 says:

    4 stars
Pretty easy and tasty, but mine stuck a little to the pan even though I used olive oil. Next time I’ll use a nonstick skillet or add a touch more oil.

    1. User avatar yulanda.leannon says:

      4 stars
Good call on that—these can still stick if the skillet isn’t really well preheated. I’ve had better luck letting the patties chill a few minutes before cooking and not moving them too soon.

  59. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

    1 star
Idk… tasted kinda fishy to me. Garlic was strong but overall bland. I guess my lemon was not enough.

    1. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

      2 stars
Oh no—sorry it turned out fishy for you 😕. These can sometimes taste “fishy” if the tuna is the stronger kind or if it’s not drained well. You might also try adding a little more lemon zest (not just juice) or a pinch of smoked paprika to brighten it up.

  60. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    4 stars
I thought this was gonna be meh, but wow, I was wrong! Just needed more salt for my taste.

  61. User avatar natacha.fadel34 says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about tuna patties, not gonna lie—but they were actually decent. Mine stuck a bit to the pan, so next time I’ll use more oil or nonstick spray.

  62. 4 stars
Yum!!! Great with some hot sauce on top. Even my kid liked it, and that’s saying something!

  63. User avatar Brock Kuhic says:

    3 stars
Super easy to make, but I felt they were a bit dry. Maybe I should’ve added more olive oil or a sauce on the side.

  64. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

    2 stars
I’ve had better. My grandma’s are way better than this.

    1. User avatar Thufir Hawat says:

      2 stars
Better than grandma’s? Nah, maybe if you use a better fish, like salmon or something! Tuna is just so… blah 🤷‍♀️.

    2. User avatar wellRespected says:

      4 stars
I get it, there’s nothing like grandma’s cooking! But these tuna cakes are pretty quick and easy when you’re short on time. Give ‘em a try on a busy day!

  65. User avatar vince.wiegand says:

    2 stars
Lemon juice? Really? I thought tuna was supposed to taste like the ocean, not lemon! Didn’t work for me.

    1. User avatar Frodo Baggins says:

      5 stars
I love tuna with lemon! It adds a fresh twist. Maybe just use less lemon juice? Everyone’s taste is diffrent!

    2. User avatar janis.durgan says:

      4 stars
I totally get it! The lemon can be overpowering if you’re not used to it. Have you tried it without the lemon? Might taste better for you!

  66. User avatar andy.bernhard says:

    5 stars
I added some cheese and it was a game changer! 😍

    1. User avatar gregg.ernser says:

      5 stars
Cheese sounds good! I’m gonna try that next time. 🧀

  67. User avatar nellie.durgan says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but I think mine were a bit dry. Maybe because my breadcrumbs were thicker? I’m gonna try adding a teaspoon of mayo or something next time to bind more.

    1. User avatar lou.hammes1954 says:

      5 stars
Dry is real with tuna cakes—your breadcrumb thickness makes sense. I usually add an extra splash of lemon juice or a spoon of mayo right in the mix. Also make sure you don’t overcook; 3-4 mins a side is plenty.

    2. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

      3 stars
I did these last week and mine were kinda dry too. I think the 1/4 cup breadcrumbs is a little much for my tuna size. Next time I’m doing half the breadcrumbs and letting it rest 5 minutes to hydrate.

  68. User avatar grasshopper says:

    3 stars
The flavor is good, but mine stuck to the pan. I should’ve used nonstick or waited longer for the oil to heat. Tasty though!

    1. User avatar aleshia.sauer14 says:

      5 stars
Ugh, I’m sorry—that’s the worst. I’ve found waiting until the oil looks a bit shimmery helps a lot, and also patting the patties gently so they’re not too wet. Nonstick definitely would’ve saved you.

  69. 4 stars
1 can tuna drained… okay but how drained? I squeezed mine and it still seemed wet. Ended up adding more breadcrumbs and it fixed it.

  70. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    2 stars
Too many steps for such a simple recipe! I just wanted a quick meal. Maybe I’ll just stick to sandwiches.

  71. User avatar flavia.gulgowski9 says:

    3 stars
Tuna cakes? Ain’t this just fancy tuna salad? lol. Anyway, they tasted good, I guess.

    1. 4 stars
It kinda is, but it’s still delicious! It’s all about how you cook it. 😋

  72. User avatar denver.mccullough54 says:

    2 stars
I followed it exactly but the patties fell apart while flipping 😩. Maybe I didn’t squeeze enough moisture out of the tuna? Also I used dried parsley (oops).

    1. 5 stars
That’s frustrating 😩 but totally fixable. If the patties fell apart, you probably needed either a bit more binding (slightly more breadcrumb) or less wet tuna. Did you drain really well and then squeeze the tuna in a paper towel?

    2. User avatar mel.senger65 says:

      4 stars
I think dried parsley isn’t the issue—texture-wise it’s all about moisture. Next time, try adding like 1–2 extra tbsp breadcrumbs and chill the mixture 10-15 min before forming patties. That helps them firm up.

  73. User avatar Pizpot Gargravarr says:

    5 stars
These lemon garlic tuna cakes are absolutely delicious! I made them for dinner last night and they were gone in minutes!

  74. User avatar Lunkwill and Fook says:

    3 stars
I followed it pretty much exactly and they tasted good, but the patties were a little crumbly. Next time I’ll try adding more egg or pressing harder.

    1. User avatar trang.kulas1994 says:

      5 stars
Glad you liked the flavor! Crumbly patties usually mean the binder is a bit off—adding a touch more egg (or letting the mix sit 5–10 min so the crumbs hydrate) can help a lot. Pressing firmly also makes a difference.

    2. User avatar Barry Manilow says:

      3 stars
Yeah mine were the same lol. I think the breadcrumbs were too dry or I didn’t mix enough. Next time I’ll try extra egg like you said. Also I might press them harder and cook a minute less? not sure.

  75. User avatar delorse.kutch56 says:

    2 stars
Way too salty even though I only did “to taste.” Maybe my tuna was saltier than usual? I’ll tweak next time.

    1. User avatar jamison.metz35 says:

      4 stars
Good call tweaking next time. Tuna cans vary a lot—some are brined/saltier—so “to taste” can still swing the final amount. I’d try adding salt only after mixing and tasting the mixture raw (or hold back and season the final patty).

    2. 2 stars
Mine was salty too… thought it was just me. Next time I’m using low-sodium tuna and maybe skip salt entirely until after I fry one cake. Also, I used seasoned breadcrumbs so that probably didn’t help lol.

  76. User avatar chi.hamill says:

    5 stars
What can I say? This recipe saved my dinner party, everyone loved it! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  77. User avatar ray.morar56 says:

    5 stars
These sound delicious! Can’t wait to try them out. Thanks for the simple recipe!

  78. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

    4 stars
I’m not sure how this relates to cooking, but those tuna cakes sound tasty! I’m going to try them this weekend.

  79. User avatar Gabriella says:

    3 stars
Mixed feelings. The flavor is nice, but I think 3-4 minutes per side is too short for my stove. I burned one first try because I got impatient.

Sorry you burned yours 😬 I’d say it depends on thickness + how medium your stove actually is. Next time, lower to medium-low and give it more time. Also don’t rush—those tuna cakes can cook uneven.

I get what you mean—3-4 minutes feels fast, especially if the pan isn’t fully hot. I usually go more like 4-6 per side and make sure they’re golden and firm in the center.

Uh… wrong post? This recipe is tuna cakes, not porn. 😅
