Jalapeño Citrus Salmon

August 19, 2024

If you’re looking for a dish that’s light, flavorful, and just a little bit bold, jalapeño citrus salmon might be your next favorite. This combination of spicy heat and fresh citrus creates a balanced flavor that’s both refreshing and satisfying. It’s a simple way to bring a little excitement to your dinner without needing a long list of ingredients or hours in the kitchen.

Salmon is a natural choice for this kind of flavor pairing. Its rich, buttery texture holds up well to bold seasoning, and the natural oils in the fish carry the flavors of citrus and spice beautifully. When you add in the bright tang of lime or orange and the subtle heat from fresh jalapeño, you get a dish that’s both vibrant and comforting.

This isn’t an overpowering heat, either. The jalapeño adds just enough kick to wake up your palate without overwhelming the other flavors. Pair it with fresh citrus juice and zest for layers of brightness, and the result is a salmon dish that tastes clean, fresh, and just a little adventurous.

Whether grilled, baked, or pan-seared, the salmon stays tender and juicy. The key is not overcooking it, allowing the citrus to gently enhance the natural flavor of the fish. It’s the kind of meal that feels elegant but comes together quickly, making it perfect for weeknights when you want something special without too much effort.

Serve it with a simple salad, roasted vegetables, or even a scoop of herbed rice for a well-rounded meal. Leftovers work beautifully in wraps or over greens the next day, and the bold flavor means you won’t feel like you’re eating the same thing twice.

Jalapeño citrus salmon is a great example of how a few fresh ingredients can completely transform a meal. It’s proof that healthy doesn’t have to mean boring, and bold flavors don’t have to be complicated. Just the right mix of heat and zing to keep things interesting.

This is delicious! I added extra honey and it turned out sweet-spicy like restaurant food. 10/10 would eat again. Yum!

    1. User avatar felix.boyer6 says:

      3 stars
Hmm I’m skeptical about adding more honey—sounds like it could overpower the citrus. But if you said it’s still balanced, I guess I’ll trust you. Did you keep the jalapeño seeds in?

    2. User avatar juli.borer67 says:

      5 stars
Glad you liked it! Extra honey + jalapeño really does make it that sweet-spicy restaurant vibe 😄 I might try your combo—how much more honey did you add?

  2. User avatar crystle.anderson says:

    5 stars
Quick and easy dish! My kids even liked it!! Will make again.

    1. 5 stars
Glad your kids liked it! I’ve been looking for quick meals for mine too. Will try this soon!

  3. 3 stars
Not sure about the honey part. I tried it and it made it taste kind of like a glaze on fish (sweet-salty vibes), which is okay but not what I wanted.

    1. User avatar liberal.hero says:

      5 stars
Totally get it—honey can push it toward that sweet glaze vibe on salmon. If you wanted more citrus/heat, I’d start with half a teaspoon (or skip it entirely) and maybe add a touch more jalapeño or extra lemon/orange to balance.

I think 400°F is too high. Mine dried out slightly after 20 minutes. Maybe my oven runs hot. Flavor was great, texture was just off.

    1. User avatar janell.langworth1975 says:

      4 stars
Oh interesting—sorry yours dried out! I usually start checking around 12–15 minutes since salmon can go from perfect to dry fast. Also if your oven runs hot, lowering to 375°F and/or shortening the bake time could help a lot. Flavor with the citrus/garlic is definitely the best part, so I’m glad that part worked!

  5. 4 stars
Good recipe, but I didn’t have orange juice so I used apple juice. Still tasted fine!

  6. User avatar lynell.larkin35 says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about mixing citrus with salmon. Seems like a leap. Will try it tho.

  7. 5 stars
This recipe is the bomb! The flavors are just amazing together. Totally my new favorite salmon dish!

  8. 4 stars
Tried this for the first time and it turned out pretty good! I might use less honey next time.

  9. User avatar isadora.ankunding says:

    5 stars
Made this tonight—so bright and fresh! The orange juice is the surprise star, and the jalapeño gives it a nice kick without overpowering. 10/10 will repeat.

  10. User avatar mose.considine70 says:

    4 stars
Made this tonight. The flavor is bright and the jalapeños actually show up without being totally overpowering. I used orange juice from a bottle and it still worked.

    1. User avatar jamey.okeefe2003 says:

      5 stars
Glad it worked for you! The orange juice + jalapeño combo sounds like exactly the kind of balance that keeps it bright without wrecking your taste buds. Did you add honey or skip it?

    2. User avatar dudley.schuppe10 says:

      3 stars
I dunno about baking jalapeños on fish… but if it’s not overpowering then okay 😅 I usually just use fresh squeezed OJ though, bottled tastes weird to me. 15-20 min feels a lil long for a 6 oz fillet?

  11. User avatar leonia.dare6 says:

    3 stars
Salmon of the sea is not my fav. 😖 But my boyfriend liked it!

    1. User avatar grisel.bergnaum64 says:

      3 stars
Doesn’t sound like salmon is for you. What did you expect from it? Fishy taste is kinda the point, lol.

    2. User avatar janise.heathcote says:

      4 stars
It’s awesome that your boyfriend liked it! Maybe you can try another dish that suits your taste better. 😊

  12. 3 stars
I tried this but my salmon turned out too dry. Maybe I baked it too long?

  13. 3 stars
Too spicy for me. I should’ve skipped the jalapeño! My kids didn’t like it.

  14. User avatar wellRespected says:

    4 stars
Simple and delicious! Took me less than 30 mins. Perfect for busy weeknight dinners.

  15. User avatar rusty.schuster says:

Salmon is healthiest fish but this sounds weird. Lemon and orange with salmon? Really?

  16. User avatar penni.purdy53 says:

    4 stars
400°F for 15 minutes was perfect for my 6 oz fillet. Next time I’ll add a little more pepper though—just my thing.

  17. User avatar luetta.mohr1991 says:

    3 stars
Time was off, cooked it for 30 mins and still needed more time. But it tasted pretty good in the end.

  18. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    3 stars
Did u mean orange juice? Kinda weird to put it on fish tho, but whatever.

  19. User avatar gertrudis.fahey55 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good but my jalapeños were hotter than I thought. I’d recommend removing seeds if you don’t want a kick.

  20. User avatar Mystic Gohan says:

    1 star
Honestly, salmon should not be baked like this. It was too sticky and the flavors were all over the place.

    1. User avatar joe_banana says:

      4 stars
I found the flavors to be really unique! I loved the kick from the jalapeño. Maybe you just had a different taste in mind?

  21. 5 stars
I’m not gonna lie, I was skeptical about orange juice on salmon, but it works. The sauce tastes restaurant-y. Would buy again.

  22. User avatar darcey.armstrong1950 says:

Fish is gross. I don’t know why I even looked at this. 1 star!

  23. User avatar davis.kuhn60 says:

Really nice combo of citrus and spice, but too spicy for me! Hubby loved it tho.

    1. User avatar Michael83 says:

      3 stars
I don’t really like spicy food, so maybe I’ll skip this one. But it sounds interesting if you can handle the heat!

  24. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    4 stars
I tried this and my kids loved it! I didn’t have any orange juice so I used apple juice instead. Still turned out great!

  25. 3 stars
I’m not sure about the jalapeño, it was too spicy for me. Maybe less next time.

    1. User avatar buster.corwin says:

      4 stars
You could try using just half a jalapeño or even leave it out! The salmon looks delicious otherwise.

  26. User avatar manie.sawayn66 says:

    5 stars
This recipe is a game changer! The jalapeños add a perfect kick.

    1. User avatar brittanie.marvin says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! The jalapeños really add a nice zing. Can’t wait to try it!

  27. 4 stars
I didn’t have fresh oranges so I used store-bought juice. Still tasty, but the flavor wasn’t as vibrant as expected.

    1. User avatar bebe.olson58 says:

      5 stars
Oh that makes sense—fresh oranges really do bring that bright, punchy aroma. Still, store-bought juice can work in a pinch; glad it was still tasty!

  28. User avatar katrice.bogan74 says:

    4 stars
My kids loved it! I just used lemon juice and skipped the honey. Easy dinner.

    1. 5 stars
Sounds amazing! I’m gonna try it with my kids too! Thanks for the tip on skipping the honey!

  29. User avatar diego.breitenberg18 says:

This was amazing! The flavors really pop and it was super easy to make. Will definitely do this again!

    1. User avatar genesis.larson says:

      5 stars
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! The honey really brings it all together, right? Can’t wait to try it again myself!

    2. User avatar Falmer Archer says:

      3 stars
Sounds good, but I bet it coulda used more spice. I dunno about honey on salmon tho, isn’t that weird? 🤔

  30. User avatar chase.batz29 says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have orange juice, so I subbed mandarin juice. It came out weirdly good? Like restaurant vibes. Would make again with whatever citrus is around.

    1. User avatar Frost Troll says:

      3 stars
Huh. Orange juice is kinda key for me—mandarin juice feels like it could get too sweet or taste “jar-y.” But if you say it’s good, I’ll try it next time… maybe with less honey? Also jalapeño on salmon sounds spicy in a good way.

    2. 5 stars
Mandarin juice?? I’m surprised it worked, but hey—restaurant vibes is the best compliment. I love that you swapped citrus instead of giving up on the flavor. Did you keep the same amount or adjust sweetness?

  31. User avatar edris.hyatt2020 says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly and it was good but nothing wow. Not bad, just kinda plain even with the jalapeño on top.

  32. 2 stars
400°F feels high for fish—mine got a little dry at 20 minutes. If you try it, start checking at 13-15.

  33. User avatar versie.macejkovic70 says:

    5 stars
I followed the recipe exactly and the sauce smelled amazing. Flavor was bright, not fishy at all. Would make again.

    1. User avatar fatima.gulgowski60 says:

      5 stars
Love hearing this! The citrus + jalapeño combo sounds like it would be so fresh—good call on making sure it’s not fishy. Did you add the honey or keep it savory?

    2. 3 stars
I kinda don’t believe the “not fishy at all” part 😅 I’ve had salmon get that smell even with lemon, but maybe orange juice helps. What kind of salmon did you use—fresh or frozen?

  34. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    4 stars
I followed it pretty closely but used a smaller fillet. Mine cooked closer to 12-13 minutes. Still tasty—sweet + spicy combo is legit.

    1. User avatar diane.mills says:

      5 stars
Nice! 12–13 minutes for a smaller fillet totally makes sense—salmon cooks fast once it’s at temp. That sweet + spicy jalapeño-orange-lemon combo is a keeper for sure.

  35. User avatar emory.kohler47 says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical about putting orange juice with salmon, but it totally works. Next time I’ll add a touch more garlic and maybe a little chili powder.

  36. 4 stars
This seems kinda… random? Orange juice on fish?? My grandma would say no. But I tried a bite and it was actually pretty good. I give it points for creativity.

  37. 5 stars
This was amazing! The honey adds a nice touch. Definitely making it again!

    1. User avatar ron.lubowitz53 says:

      3 stars
Really? I thought the honey was too sweet for salmon. But happy u liked it!

    2. User avatar esperanza.rutherford says:

      5 stars
Glad you liked it! The honey really brings out the flavors, right? I’m gonna try it next time too!

  38. User avatar tammie.lehner73 says:

    3 stars
Not sure about the honey part. I used it and it turned out a bit too sweet for my taste. Next time I’ll omit or reduce it.

  39. 1 star
Total waste of good salmon. Just didn’t taste right.

  40. User avatar fredda.runte54 says:

    2 stars
Too spicy for me, I thought jalapeños were milder. Next time, I’m skipping them.

  41. User avatar odell.harber43 says:

    5 stars
I just put the whole jar of honey on it LOL. Sooo sweet but still good!

  42. User avatar felton.simonis57 says:

    4 stars
    Yum!

  43. User avatar salvatore.kling says:

    5 stars
Made this tonight—wow. The orange + lemon combo is so bright, and the jalapeño gives just the right kick. I used honey and it balanced perfectly. Will definitely repeat.

  44. User avatar shirleen.brekke says:

    3 stars
My kids refused the jalapeño (shocking, I know). I baked it without the pepper and used extra lemon—still yummy, but less exciting.

  45. 2 stars
I like fish but this felt a bit too sweet with the honey, what should I do next time?

    1. User avatar Lumberjack says:

      4 stars
You could try skipping the honey next time or just use a little bit! Maybe some lime juice would cut the sweetness too.

  46. 4 stars
Not bad! Added some extra spices, made it better. 👍

    1. User avatar luana.jast says:

      5 stars
Glad to hear you enjoyed it! What spices did you add? I’m always looking for new ideas! 😄

    2. 3 stars
Extra spices? Isn’t that just masking the taste of the salmon? 🤔

  47. User avatar kip.jacobs30 says:

    3 stars
I followed the recipe exactly, but my salmon came out a bit drier than I expected. Maybe I baked it too long (20 min). Flavor was still good though.

    1. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

      3 stars
I think your oven temp runs hot or the fillet was thinner than “about 6 oz” usually is. I’ve also noticed parchment can dry it out if there’s no foil tent. Maybe cover loosely with foil halfway? Still glad flavor was good though!

    2. 4 stars
Sorry that happened! At 400°F, 20 minutes can push it a bit past “just flakes.” Next time, pull it closer to 14–16 minutes and bake until it flakes but still looks a little glossy in the center. Resting also matters—try 3 minutes max.

  48. User avatar gladis.kling2021 says:

    4 stars
Surprisingly good. I was skeptical about orange juice with salmon but it caramelized a little and tasted fresh, not weird. Next time I’ll slice the jalapeño thinner so it distributes more evenly.

  49. User avatar kevin.daniel87 says:

    5 stars
Simple and quick recipe! I added some cilantro on top for extra flavor. Yum!

    1. User avatar Mad Batter says:

      3 stars
Sounds good but I dunno about the honey. Isn’t salmon supposed to be savory?

    2. User avatar billye.emard says:

      5 stars
Cilantro on top? That’s genius! I’ll try that next time. Thanks for sharing!

  50. User avatar nancy.hettinger69 says:

    2 stars
Way too spicy for me. I only used half a jalapeño and it still bit. Flavor’s there, but next time I’ll remove seeds and membranes.

  51. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

    2 stars
I tried it but I didn’t like the combination of citrus and fish. I’ll stick to my usual recipe.

  52. User avatar Peregrin Took says:

    4 stars
Yum! I didn’t have pepper so I used paprika. Still delicious 🤤

  53. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

This is the first time I used parchment paper and it helped a lot with sticking. Tastes great too.

    1. User avatar phillip.sipes35 says:

      4 stars
Nice! I tried parchment too but I think I used too much honey… my jalapeño tasted kinda weirdly sweet, lol. Still good though. How spicy did yours come out?

    2. 5 stars
Agreed—parchment paper is a game changer for salmon. I used it once and now I can’t go back. The citrus + jalapeño combo sounds delicious!

  56. User avatar esteban.ziemann90 says:

    2 stars
I followed the recipe but it came out dry. Maybe I cooked it too long? Not worth the effort.

    1. User avatar Flame Atronach says:

      2 stars
This recipe seems complicated for a simple fish. Maybe stick to frying salmon instead? Much easier and no drying out.

    2. User avatar mckenzie.konopelski says:

      4 stars
I think you might have overcooked it! Salmon can dry out easily. Next time try checking it at 15 minutes instead of 20.

  57. User avatar Doug Hole says:

Wasn’t sure about the orange juice, but it surprisingly worked! Will make again for sure!

    1. 3 stars
I dunno about using orange juice in fish, sounds kinda odd. But hey, if it worked for you, maybe I’ll give it a shot. 🤔

    2. 5 stars
I’m glad to hear the orange juice worked for you! It adds a unique twist. Can’t wait to try it myself!

Really easy to make and it tasted great! Took it to a family dinner and everyone loved it. Gonna make again!

  63. User avatar rich.landlord says:

Made this tonight—wow. The citrus + jalapeño combo is super fresh, and the salmon stayed perfectly juicy at 400°F. I didn’t add honey and it still tasted balanced.

  64. User avatar dalton.shanahan74 says:

    4 stars
The sauce smelled incredible but my jalapeño sank off the top and got a little charred. Still ate it all—just looks different.

  65. User avatar elsie.hettinger1969 says:

Yum! My kids loved it! Sweet and spicy combo works.

  68. User avatar leland.predovic says:

    3 stars
The garlic + citrus sauce smelled amazing, but my fillet got a little too salty. Maybe my salmon was already brined? Still tasty though—just needs careful salt measuring.

  69. User avatar alessandra.flatley73 says:

    4 stars
Simple and fresh! Cooking salmon can be tricky but this made it easy.

  70. User avatar vincent.roob37 says:

    5 stars
That citrus + jalapeño combo sounds dangerous (in a good way). I love when salmon isn’t just plain salt-and-butter. Going to try it with a little extra honey.

  71. User avatar johnetta.cremin84 says:

    3 stars
Mine came out a little too salty—maybe I packed the salt? Also, 15 minutes felt fast for my fillet size. Still tasty though, just adjust timing.

  72. 5 stars
Made this tonight—wow. The orange + lemon combo with the jalapeño is a really nice balance. Mine baked in about 17 minutes, perfectly flaky. Will absolutely do again.

    1. User avatar Mr. Prosser says:

      5 stars
Love hearing this! The citrus + jalapeño combo is such a good balance—glad it came out flaky for you. Thanks for sharing your bake time!

Had to Google what a jalapeño is lol, but I tried it! Tasted good, just spicy for me, maybe use green peppers next time.

  74. User avatar alvaro.muller50 says:

    4 stars
Really solid and easy. I forgot to rest it for a few minutes though, and it was a little messier to flake. Still tasted amazing.

  75. User avatar merrill.marquardt94 says:

So good, but I didn’t have honey, so I used sugar. Is that ok? It was still yummy, not gonna lie.

Orange juice in salmon feels a little weird to me, but honestly it works. The honey optional bit balances the heat nicely.

I didn’t really like the jalapeño with the fish. Kinda weird combo if u ask me.

  82. 5 stars
Y’all are gonna love this! My kids even ate it, and they usually only want chicken.

    1. User avatar eddie.bogisich says:

      2 stars
Really? Kids like salmon? I doubt it, but maybe the jalapeño helps. I’m skeptical.

    2. 5 stars
Sounds delicious! Can’t wait to try this. My kids are usually picky too, so this gives me hope!

I don’t usually bake fish, but this was easy. Only complaint: I wish the instructions said how thick the salmon should be.

  84. User avatar shon.labadie52 says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but I think it needs more spices. Also, can you use a different fish? I’m not a salmon fan.

  85. User avatar claretta.kunde1956 says:

Yummyyyy! I added some chopped cilantro on top, and it was fresh AF! 🤤

This is one of those recipes where the ingredients are simple but taste fancy. The honey option is genius—like sweet but not dessert sweet.

  87. 3 stars
Garlic + lemon I get. But jalapeño on salmon? Kinda risky. Still, I ate it all so… yeah, not bad.

  88. User avatar marcus.runolfsdottir says:

I followed the steps exactly, but mine came out a bit dry. Maybe I overbaked it or my oven runs hot.

    1. User avatar jerrell.jaskolski87 says:

Hmm, 15–20 minutes at 400°F can definitely dry salmon if your fillet is thinner. Next time, try pulling it closer to 15 minutes and check early—salmon should flake but still look a little glossy. Also, resting a few minutes helps, but over-resting won’t fix dryness.

  89. User avatar bert.hagenes says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but mine came out kind of bland even with salt/pepper. I think my jalapeño was mild? Maybe I needed more. Sauce was good.

    1. User avatar hoyt.bauch67 says:

      4 stars
Yeah, I’ve had jalapeños be super mild too—mine was practically all flavorless heat. I’d definitely add a bit more (or use some seeds) next time. Also 1/2 tsp salt for 1 fillet might be light depending on how thick the salmon is.

    2. User avatar cornelius.stiedemann says:

      3 stars
Hmm maybe you needed to marinate it? I just bake and it’s usually not bland, but if your salmon was thicker it might’ve used up less of the seasoning. I’d try adding a touch more lemon/orange and more pepper. Or my jalapeño brand is way hotter lol

  90. User avatar lacey.smitham94 says:

The jalapeño was way too spicy for me—like I was regretting life after the first bite. If you can handle heat though, it’s tasty.

    1. User avatar Meriadoc Brandybuck says:

      5 stars
Totally get that—jalapeños can be wildly different. Next time I’d de-seed it (or use half) before putting it on top. Still sounds really tasty otherwise!

  91. 4 stars
I’m skeptical about orange juice with salmon. Like… is it gonna taste like fishy orange soda? But honestly it tastes good—less weird than I thought.

  92. User avatar magda.keebler34 says:

    3 stars
I tried it but felt like the jalapeños were too spicy for the salmon. Maybe less spice next time?

  93. User avatar rosie.hyatt88 says:

Looks delish, I might use chicken instead of salmon. Anyone tried that?

  94. 5 stars
Super flavorful! I used bottled lemon/orange juice because that’s what I had and it still turned out great. 18 minutes at 400°F was perfect for my 6 oz fillet.

    1. User avatar ivory.beahan says:

      5 stars
Love hearing it worked with bottled juice! I always worry bottled won’t have enough punch, but 400°F for 18 minutes on a 6 oz fillet sounds spot on. Going to try this with extra jalapeño next time 😋

  95. 5 stars
Made this tonight—wow. The orange + lemon combo is brighter than I expected, and the jalapeño gives just the right kick. I used a tiny bit of honey and it really balanced everything.

  96. User avatar august.schaden says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but my jalapeño was way hotter than expected and it kicked like crazy. Next time I’ll use less or remove some seeds. Flavor is still solid.

  97. User avatar barry.mclaughlin says:

Yum! I never thought jalapeños would go well with salmon, but here we are!

    1. User avatar charlsie.kreiger says:

I’m surprised too! The heat of the jalapeños with the citrus is just perfection! Can’t wait to try this! 😍

Really? Jalapeños and salmon? That sounds kinda weird, but maybe it works. 🤔

The garlic felt kinda strong to me (and I used only 1 clove). Maybe reduce it if you’re not into bold flavors.

  99. User avatar christi.labadie9 says:

I think the honey is too much. It made it taste weird. Salmon is supposed to be savory, not sweet!

    1. User avatar Chaurus Hunter says:

      5 stars
I actually loved the honey! It balanced out the spiciness of the jalapeño. Maybe try less honey next time?

Jalapeño salmon??? Sounds weird. I just threw ketchup on mine instead.

Mine came out a bit dry at 20 minutes—maybe my oven runs hot. I’d start checking around 14-15.

    1. User avatar whitley.dooley55 says:

      3 stars
Huh, mine took closer to 20 mins at 400. Maybe I had a thicker piece? Also I didn’t rest it long and it was kinda dry, so maybe rest helps keep it moist.

    2. User avatar camellia.klein73 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree on checking earlier. 20 minutes sounds like it could overcook depending on the oven and how thick the fillet is. I start watching at ~14 minutes too—flakes = done, not “looks done.”

  103. User avatar stacey.abbott28 says:

    3 stars
This recipe is super simple, but mine came out a little too spicy. Maybe my jalapeño was hotter or I left it too thick. Still ate it all though 😅

  104. 5 stars
This was delicious! The jalapeño added a nice kick. Will make again for sure!

  105. User avatar weston.stark says:

1 fillet “about 6 oz” is kinda random… also I didn’t have fresh orange juice, used bottled and it tasted a little flat. Still decent, but fresh is better.

  106. User avatar lucien.littel26 says:

My kids loved it! I didn’t even tell them it was salmon, just call it ‘magic fish’. 😂

  107. User avatar lacy.swaniawski says:

I was skeptical about orange juice with salmon, but wow. The sauce reduced a little in the oven and stuck to the fish. Didn’t even need extra seasoning.

This was crap. I burnt my salmon, oh well. 😩

  109. User avatar misty.rodriguez2005 says:

I don’t understand why you would mix sweet and spicy. This recipe sounds weird.

  110. User avatar miyoko.braun75 says:

I like salmon, but I’m skeptical about putting jalapeño on top like that. Also orange juice seems odd. Still, I ate it all… so I guess it works.

    1. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

      5 stars
Honestly I was skeptical too, but the orange juice + jalapeño combo actually makes sense. The sweetness cuts the heat and the citrus keeps the salmon from tasting flat. Glad you ate it all though 😄
