Easy Chicken shawarma is a dish that has captured the hearts and appetites of food lovers around the world. Known for its bold spices and irresistible aroma, it transforms simple chicken into a flavorful, tender meal that feels both comforting and exotic. Originating in the Middle East, shawarma has become a global favorite, thanks to its perfect balance of savory, smoky, and tangy flavors.
The key to great chicken shawarma lies in the marinade. A mixture of warm spices such as cumin, paprika, turmeric, and coriander is combined with garlic, lemon juice, and yogurt. This blend not only tenderizes the chicken but also infuses it with layers of flavor. When cooked, traditionally on a vertical spit but often recreated at home on the grill, stovetop, or in the oven, the chicken develops a slightly charred exterior while staying juicy inside.
Part of shawarma’s appeal is its versatility. Slices of the seasoned chicken can be wrapped in soft pita bread with fresh vegetables, drizzled with tahini or garlic sauce, or served as part of a larger platter with rice, homemade hummus, and pickles. Each version feels satisfying, whether you want a quick handheld meal or a feast shared with friends and family.
Beyond taste, chicken shawarma carries with it a sense of community and tradition. Street vendors across the Middle East have long served shawarma as an everyday food, and its popularity abroad reflects the comfort and familiarity people find in it. It’s casual yet full of depth, the kind of food that works as well for a weekday dinner as it does for a festive gathering.
The aroma of spiced chicken sizzling as it cooks is enough to draw anyone in. With its tender texture, rich flavor, and endless serving possibilities, chicken shawarma is more than just a meal, it’s a celebration of flavors and traditions that continue to connect people across cultures.

I did not have all the spices, so I used taco seasoning instead. It was decent but not shawarma 😅
Yum! Cooked this last night and the family loved it. I served it with hummus and salad. Perfect!
It was okay, but the spices were a bit too much for my taste. I prefer simpler flavors. Maybe less cayenne next time.
I just mixed everything without marinating. It was still good. LOL
That’s great to hear! Sometimes you don’t have to follow recipes to the letter. Cooking is all about experimenting! 😊
Is this really how you make shawarma? Looks kinda basic. Shawarma is supposed to be roasted on a spit!
Meh, alright but not the best. My chicken got kinda dry. Should’ve watched it more closely.
Easy to make and I had most ingredients at home. Just used chicken thighs instead, turned out great!
So freaking delicious! The cinnamon adds a unique twist. Love it!
I agree! The cinnamon really does make it special. Can’t wait to try this!
This recipe was really easy to follow! The chicken came out so flavorful. Definitely making this again!
I’m glad you enjoyed it! Shawarma is my favorite. What do you usually serve it with?
Super delish! I added some tahini sauce on top and wow! Best chicken I’ve had in ages!
Good, but my chicken got a bit dry. Next time, I’m using thighs.
Tasted like restaurant. But chicken is always chicken, you know? 🤷♂️
Shawarma is usually lamb, right? Why chicken? Still, I guess it was good enough. 🤷♂️
Shawarma can be made with chicken too! It’s super tasty this way. You’re missing out if you haven’t tried it! 😋
This is NOT shawarma. Where’s the yogurt sauce? Disappointed.
This recipe is awesome! The chicken turned out super flavorful. My family loved it!
I’m glad to hear your family loved it! This recipe is definitely a keeper. Thanks for sharing!
Sounds good, but I’m not sure if cayenne is necessary. Isn’t it spicy? Not everyone likes spicy, you know!
I followed the recipe to a T, but the chicken turned out dry…🤔
Good, but next time I’m gonna add some more lemon. It’s bit bland. Overall, not bad.
It was ok, but I think the spices are too strong. I like it more plain.
8-10 minutes on medium heat sounds too vague… I ended up closer to 12. Also my pita was stale, so my whole vibe was off 😂. Recipe’s fine.
Totally fair—8-10 min depends a lot on pan thickness and how thin the slices are. If yours was closer to 12, that tracks. Also stale pita will absolutely mess with the whole experience 😅
Um, can I just say that this seems a bit complicated for chicken. Why are there so many spices? Just throw it on the grill!
Wow, turned out sooo tasty! I added some extra garlic though. Yum!
I dunno… it was okay but took too long to marinate. Why marinate for so long?
Marinating helps tenderize the chicken and enhances the flavor! But I get it, waiting can be tough!
This is the best chicken shawarma I’ve ever made! The spices are perfect!
I’m glad you liked it! Shawarma is so delicious. What did you serve it with?
Super yummy. Even better with hummus! I’ll def make this for my friends next week.
Sounds delicious! Can’t wait to try it with hummus, too!
This is the best shawarma recipe I’ve ever tried! So flavorful and easy to make. 🌟
I’m glad you loved it! Shawarma is the best, right? 🌯❤️
I used beef instead of chicken and it still tasted fab! Give it a try!
I never thought to use beef! That’s pretty cool, glad it worked for you!
But it’s a chicken recipe… does beef really taste that good in it? 🤔
Fiyuhh! The cayenne pepper is a must, gives it a nice kick.
Easy peasy! Made it in no time, but the cayenne added more heat than I thought. 😂
Delish! I added some yogurt sauce on top, and it was a hit with the family! 🍗❤️
Yogurt? Sounds sorta weird with chicken, but hey, whatever works for ya! 🤷♂️
Yogurt sauce sounds amazing! I’ll have to try that next time. Thanks for the tip! 😊
Why would you marinate chicken for sooo long? I think 30 min is enough. Just saying!
Not bad! The cayenne made it a little too spicy for my kids, so next time I’ll leave it out. Cooking time was about right though.
I think you forgot to mention to soak the chicken in water first??? That helps too. Haha.
Cayenne pepper? Like, that is hot right? I am sensitive to spice, so any advice on that? Thanks!
Looks good but not sure if I have all those spices. Can I just use a packet of shawarma spice instead?
I wouldn’t recommend it. The individual spices give it a unique flavor you won’t get from a packet. Might as well get the real deal! 🤷♂️
Using a shawarma spice packet should work fine! It’ll save you time and still taste great. Just adjust the amount based on how strong the flavor is. 😊
This recipe was amazing! The spices really made the chicken pop. I can’t wait to make it again!
Good flavor combo. I had to add a splash more lemon because mine tasted a bit dull, but overall it came out great with garlic yogurt sauce.
Yummy! Made this for my family and everyone asked for seconds! 😊
That’s awesome! I’m glad your family loved it! 😍 Did you serve it with any special sauces?
Yum! I added some pickled veggies and it was like heaven on a plate. Totally recommend!
Mine got a little dry even though I cooked for 8 minutes. Maybe my strips were thicker—still tasty though.
Hey I made this last night and it was rly good, easy! Maybe use more cayenne if u like heat!!!
The cinnamon?? I was skeptical, but it works. It’s subtle and makes the marinade smell amazing while cooking.
I was the same—cinnamon sounds like it’ll be overpowering. But you’re right, it just kinda rounds everything out. The marinade smell is unreal.
Wait, cinnamon in shawarma? 😅 I tried once and it tasted weird to me… maybe I added too much? Your notes make me wanna re-test with 1/2 tsp only.
This was super easy and the spices actually taste like shawarma, not just “seasoned chicken.” I marinated overnight and it was juicy. Will make again!
I’m skeptical about the cinnamon being in shawarma, but wow… it actually works. Not too sweet at all.
I followed it exactly and my chicken came out a little dry. Next time I’ll slice thinner or cook a touch shorter. The spices smell amazing though!
Totally agree—if the slices are even slightly thicker, they dry out fast. Thin it out and keep an eye around the 8-minute mark. Also, did you maybe overcook while waiting for it to “char”?
I think you need more oil. Mine stuck to the pan a bit and charred too fast. Also “slightly charred” is vague lol.
Totally fair—“slightly charred” is vague 😅 I’d say aim for medium heat and preheat the pan properly; if it’s sticking, a little more oil (or a nonstick pan) helps. Also make sure the chicken isn’t too wet—marinate is great, but excess marinade can make it steam instead of sear.
I don’t get why everyone loves this so much. It was just okay. Needs more flavor.
I think it’s really tasty! Maybe you just didn’t marinate long enough? It really helps bring out the flavors. Give it another shot!
I forgot to add turmeric and it tasted kinda flat. Reminded me how much that little bit matters. Lesson learned 😅
Oof, that’s such a real lesson 😅 Turmeric really does add warmth and that “shawarma” vibe. Next time you’ll nail it!
Honestly I’ve made it without turmeric and it was still good—maybe your lemon was too subtle? Also I always forget cayenne (oops) and still fine. But yeah flat flavors happen when one spice is missing.
I tried this with beef instead of chicken and it worked too! Not sure if that’s in the spirit of shawarma though.
Wow, beef shawarma sounds interesting! I guess it’s all about personal preference, right? I might try it too!
Beef? Really? That’s not Shawarma! Shawarma is supposed to be chicken or lamb! 😂
Easy to follow, but my chicken turned out too dry. Maybe I cooked it too long?
Cooking chicken can be tricky! Next time, try keeping an eye on it and take it off earlier. Maybe around 7 minutes instead of 10?
I didn’t have cayenne pepper, so I used chili flakes instead. Still turned out great! 👍
This chicken shawarma recipe is so easy and tasty! I didn’t have cayenne, but it still turned out great. Will be making again!
Just okay. Didn’t taste like the shawarma I get in the restaurant.
So good!
This recipe is super easy and delicious! My family loved it. I added extra garlic, and it turned out great.
Chicken Shawarma? Isn’t that from a Lebanese cuisine? I thought it was Greek.
Followed the recipe but my chicken was dry. What did I do wrong? Too long cooking time maybe?
Easy and quick! Thank you for the recipe! Everyone should try it. Will make again.
My marinade separated because I used regular olive oil (didn’t have extra virgin). Still worked, but the flavor wasn’t as bold. Won’t lie though, it was tasty.
Who knew making shawarma was so easy? I added some yogurt sauce and it was perfect. Thanks!
So glad to hear you enjoyed it! The yogurt sauce is a great addition. Did you use any veggies with it?
Easy? That seems kinda hard with all those spices. I think my chicken would burn!
I’m not sure about the spices. My chicken ended up tasting kinda weird. Maybe I did it wrong?
Tried this tonight—super flavorful! The cinnamon + cumin combo is surprisingly good, like cozy street-food vibes.
Good base recipe. I didn’t have cayenne so I skipped it and it still tasted great. Next time I’ll add a squeeze more lemon.
You call that shawarma? It’s just chicken with spices! Shawarma needs a rotisserie. 🤷♂️
I was skeptical at first. I thought it was too many spices, but it turned out delicious! My kids loved it too.
So glad it turned out good! Chicken shawarma is a favorite in our house. The spices really make it flavorful!
Made this tonight—so flavorful! The lemon + cumin combo is 🔥 and I actually got those little charred bits. I’ll definitely do the overnight marinade next time.
I didn’t have all the spices, so I just used salt and pepper. It was still good but not shawarma, lol.
Not enough lemon for me. I like my food tangy. Maybe I’ll add more next time?
My marinade smelled SO strong after mixing. I let it sit for an hour only—still good, but overnight would’ve been better. Pita + pickles = chef’s kiss.
Hmmm I kinda think an hour is too short for all that garlic/lemon and cumin. Like my marinade always smells strong too, but I’m scared of it turning bitter if it sits overnight? Maybe depends on the chicken.
Totally agree—those spices get intense fast. I usually do 4–6 hours minimum, and yeah overnight is where it really shines. Pita + pickles is the perfect move!
This is pretty easy. I used regular olive oil (not extra virgin) and it was fine. Could use more garlic maybe.
Thanks! Yeah, regular olive oil should work—extra virgin just adds more flavor. And I totally agree: 2 cloves can be a little mild; adding another clove (or even roasting the garlic first) would ramp it up nicely.
The measurements are clear, but I wish it said what temp to cook at. Medium heat is vague, my pan runs hot.
Medium is vague, agreed. But 8-10 minutes should still work—just keep moving the chicken so it doesn’t burn. I’ve done it on high with a splash of water and it was fine… so medium probably means “listen to your pan.”
Totally fair—“medium heat” is a pain. I usually set mine around 350°F / 175°C for a nonstick, and a hair higher on cast iron. If it starts smoking, turn it down.
