There’s something incredibly cozy about a classic chicken mushroom pie. It’s the kind of meal that feels like a warm hug on a chilly evening, hearty, rich, and deeply satisfying. With its creamy filling packed with chunks of tender chicken and slices of savory mushrooms, all wrapped in a golden, buttery crust, it’s no wonder this dish remains a favorite at family tables.
What sets this pie apart is the harmony of its ingredients. The mushrooms bring an earthy depth that complements the mild flavor of the chicken, while the creamy sauce binds everything together into a luxurious filling. Add a flaky pastry top, and you’ve got a dish that looks impressive but is surprisingly simple to make. Whether you use homemade pastry or store-bought, the result is equally delicious.
Chicken mushroom pie is incredibly versatile. It can be made in a traditional pie dish, in individual ramekins for personal servings, or even as a rustic pot pie with just a top crust. It’s also a great way to use up leftover roast chicken or that extra rotisserie bird sitting in the fridge. You can add in peas, carrots, or herbs like thyme and parsley to boost the flavor even more.
This dish is perfect for feeding a crowd or meal prepping for the week. Serve it with a crisp green salad or some roasted vegetables for a balanced meal. The pie holds up well in the fridge and reheats beautifully, making it a go-to for weeknight dinners or weekend comfort food.
There’s a nostalgic charm to chicken mushroom pie. It brings to mind home-cooked meals, Sunday dinners, and that irresistible smell of something savory baking in the oven. It’s the kind of dish that disappears quickly, with everyone coming back for seconds. If you’ve never tried making it from scratch, now’s the time, it’s easier than you think, and the reward is absolutely worth it.

Ingredients
- 2 cups chicken breast cooked and shredded
- 1 cup mushrooms sliced
- 1 medium onion chopped
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 cups chicken stock
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 1 teaspoon salt to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper to taste
- 1 package puff pastry thawed
- 1 egg for egg wash
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
- In a large pan, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the mushrooms and cook for another 5 minutes until they soften.
- Add the flour to the pan and stir until it combines with the butter, forming a roux.
- Slowly add the chicken stock, stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Allow the mixture to thicken.
- Add the cooked chicken to the pan and season with salt and pepper. Stir to combine.
- Roll out the puff pastry and line a pie dish with one of the sheets.
- Pour the chicken and mushroom filling into the pastry-lined dish.
- Cover with the second sheet of puff pastry. Seal the edges and make a few slits on top for steam to escape.
- Brush the top with beaten egg.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown.

Meh. Just another chicken pie recipe. Nothing special.
I have a question, what if I don’t have chicken stock? Can I use water instead? Asking for a friend. 🙂
This chicken mushroom pie was to die for! My family loved it and it’s so easy to make.
Not sure why everyone loves this… it seems too plain. Could use more spice.
I think it’s delicious just as it is! But you could definitely add more spices if you prefer. Maybe some thyme or paprika? ☺️
Excellent dish! Easy to make and very filling. I would totally recommend it.
It was okay, but I forgt to put salt! So bland. But that’s on me.
Soo good!!! My kids devoured it! Puff pastry was flaky and the filling was delish.
That’s awesome! 😍 My kids loved it too! Do you have any tips for making the filling even tastier?
Yummm! I added some cheese inside the pie, made it even better. Thanks for the recipe!
Wait, cheese? Isn’t that a bit too much? I feel like it might overpower the chicken flavor. Just saying.
Cheese in the pie? That’s a genius idea! I’m gonna try that next time. Thanks for sharing! 😊
Chicken and mushrums? Sounds weird but tasted great! Will make it again.
I tried this recipe but wasn’t impressed. The flavors didn’t stand out at all. Maybe needs garlic?
Does anyone know if I can use frozen chicken instead? I don’t want to cook fresh chicken lol.
Followed the recipe but would recommend adding some garlic for extra flavor.
I love garlic! Great idea to sprinkle some in, it would definitely enhance the flavor. Thanks for sharing!
Best. Pie. Ever. 🤤
It was okay, but why use puff pastry? It’s kind of a hassle. Just get a store-bought crust, people!
This pie was delicious! My whole family loved it. I’m definitely making it again.
Tasted good, but the pastry was a bit soggy for my liking. Any tips to avoid that?
Eh, not bad, but I’ve had better. The filling was a bit too runny, maybe less stock next time?
Pie? More like my new favorite dinner! Yum yum yum!!!
I tried this recipe but it turned out too salty for my taste. Maybe I added too much salt?
I think you might have added more salt than needed. It’s easy to do with all those ingredients! Next time, just start with less and adjust to your taste. Hope it works out better!
Using chicken breast is a bad idea! Should’ve used thighs for more flavor. Sad panda.
This is not a pie! It’s more like chicken soup in a crust. Disappointed!
I see your point! It does sound more like a stew. But I still think it’s delicious! Maybe it’s a new take?
It looks great, but I didn’t have puff pastry and used bread instead. It was okay, but not the same!
I don’t eat chicken much, but I tried this with tofu instead and it rocked! Vegan twist, you know!
Tofu? Really? That’s like putting a square peg in a round hole! Chicken’s the way to go!
I love that you made it vegan! I’m definitely going to give it a try with tofu instead. Thanks for the inspo!
Good recipe, but puff pastry gave me a hard time. Should’ve bought a better one.
SO GOOD! I used leftover rotisserie chicken, it worked great!
I’m not a great cook, but this was pretty easy. Thanks for the step-by-step! 😊
Just okay. My kids barely ate it, they said it looked funny. 🤷♀️
This was absolutely delicious! The flavors are perfect, and the pie came out golden brown. My family loved it!
Puff pastry is just fancy dough, who cares? It tasted good anyway.
I followed the recipe but my pie turned out soggy. I think I added too much stock? Not sure what went wrong.
Yummm! Best dinner ever! My kids couldn’t stop eating, will make again for sure!
This pie is absolutely delicious! My family loved it. Thanks for sharing!
This pie is simply delicious! I added a pinch of thyme and it was fantastic. Definitely a keeper!
Took forever to cook! What kind of oven do you even have? Mine is slow!
I hate mushrooms, can I skip those? The recipe looks good but idk what to do…
But mushrooms give flavor! Are you sure? Maybe try it once? Just saying…
You can totally skip the mushrooms! Just add extra chicken or maybe some veggies you like instead. It’ll still taste good!
Pie looks good, but I dont like mushrooms. Can I just leave them out?
Just made this for dinner, and my kids gobbled it up! Will make again for sure!
I had a little trouble with the filling. It was a bit runny for me. Maybe I added too much stock?
Maybe try adding less stock next time? It happens to the best of us! Keep experimenting!
I dunno, but I think the flour helps thicken it. Did you let it cook long enough?
Simple recipe but tastes like it took hours. My hubby thinks I’m a master chef! 😄
This sounds delicious! Can’t wait to try it. Thanks for sharing! 😊
I think I might have added too much pepper lol, but it was still pretty good.
This chicken mushroom pie is AMAZING! So flaky and delicious, my family loved it!
Chicken pie? Love it! But this seems a bit fancy for my cooking skills. I’ll stick to my lasagna.
Uh, is the egg wash actually necessary? I forgot and it turned out fine.
Not sure why you need to cook the onions so long. They just turn mushy. Also, what’s with the chicken stock? Can I use water?
Wow, super easy to make! I just used canned chicken and it turned out fine. Yum!
I dunno, my pie came out soggy. Did I do something wrong? I followed the recipe…
OMG this was so easy to make! Will definitely be adding it to my weekly menu! 😀
