Croque Madame

October 1, 2024

Croque Madame is the epitome of indulgent French comfort food, offering a decadent twist on the classic Croque Monsieur. This delicious sandwich features layers of savory ham and melted cheese, all enveloped in a rich, creamy béchamel sauce. What sets the Croque Madame apart is the addition of a perfectly fried egg on top, adding a delightful richness that elevates the dish to new heights. Perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a satisfying lunch, this dish is a must-try for anyone who loves French cuisine and hearty meals.

The base of a Croque Madame is a traditional Croque Monsieur, which is made with slices of hearty bread (often white or brioche), ham, and Gruyère or Emmental cheese. The magic happens when the sandwich is smothered in a luxurious béchamel sauce, a creamy white sauce made with butter, flour, milk, and a pinch of nutmeg. This sauce not only adds richness but also helps to bind the sandwich together, making every bite incredibly indulgent.

To take it a step further, the Croque Madame includes a fried egg placed on top. The runny yolk adds a creamy, velvety texture that seeps into the sandwich, making each bite a mix of crispy, creamy, and savory. The contrast between the crunchy, toasted bread and the soft, gooey cheese creates a perfect balance of textures that’s hard to beat.

Making a Croque Madame is surprisingly simple, though the combination of flavors and textures feels fancy and refined. Start by making the béchamel sauce, then layer it on toasted bread with ham and cheese. After baking the sandwich until golden and bubbling, top it with a perfectly fried egg, and you’ve got yourself a meal that’s sure to impress.

Croque Madame is a perfect choice for a luxurious brunch or even a satisfying dinner. It pairs wonderfully with a fresh green salad, providing a light contrast to the richness of the sandwich. Whether you’re in the mood for something indulgent or looking to treat yourself to a bit of French elegance, the Croque Madame is a dish you’ll want to savor again and again.

I tried it but the cheese didn’t melt like it should. Maybe my oven’s off?

Maybe try checking the temperature with an oven thermometer? Sometimes they can be off. Love the recipe though!

Cheese melting is tricky. I think you need a more melty cheese like mozzarella, not just gruyere. Just saying.

  2. 3 stars
Honestly, the egg on top is just weird. Why would you put an egg on a sandwich? Doesn’t make sense.

    1. 5 stars
But that’s what makes it a Croque Madame! The egg adds richness. You should try it!

Not bad, but 400°F for 6-8 min felt short. I needed like 12 min for the bread to crisp. Also I used black pepper from the jar… yeah it’s fine.

Yum! Loved it! My kids devoured it in minutes. Will make again for sure!

Too much butter for my liking. Next time, less butter, pls!

Not gonna lie, I’m skeptical about the mustard amount. It was kinda strong, but if you like Dijon then it’s probably perfect.

Wasn’t what I expected. Seems too fancy for breakfast. Us country folks just like it simple!

I think it’s a nice twist on breakfast! You might just need to give it a try. 🌟

This is such a classic—crispy edges, melty cheese, and that runny yolk makes it. I used leftover roast chicken once and it still worked great.

I think I burnt my toast in the oven… what a mess! Still tasted okay though haha!

Quick and easy recipe! Only took me like 15 mins. Perfect for breakfast!

  11. User avatar rogelio.keeling82 says:

Pretty easy overall. I think 6–8 minutes was a bit short for my oven though; I went closer to 10 and the bread got nicer and browner.

Super easy to make! My kids loved it. Definitely making this again Saturday!

I don’t know man, looks pretty basic to me. How can ya call it a Croque Madame without fancy ingredients? 🤔

    2. User avatar Wallace Carter says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome! I’m glad your kids liked it. What do you plan to pair it with on Saturday?

  13. 4 stars
This looks good but can I use any cheese? Not sure about Gruyere…

  14. User avatar Hubert Spinka says:

Egg on top? Yuck! I’ll stick to my plain ham and cheese. 😒

    1. 4 stars
Eggs make everything better! You should give it a try. 😊

Croque Madame? I thought this was just a fancy name for a breakfast sandwich. Lol.

  16. 5 stars
This recipe is amazing! So easy to follow and turned out delish!

Croque Madame? Is that the same as a Croque Monsieur? I’m confused. 🤷‍♂️

    1. 4 stars
I thought they were the same too! 🤔 But the egg is the big diff! More protein and taste!

    2. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

      5 stars
Yes, a Croque Madame is like a Croque Monsieur, but it has a fried egg on top. So good! 🍳

  18. User avatar Tricia McMillan says:

My egg overflowed a little because I forgot to keep the yolk runny 😅 Still delicious though. Next time I’ll watch it closer.

  19. User avatar pamella.marks16 says:

I tried it but my oven runs hot—burned the edges a little. Still tasty though. Next time I’ll watch it closer and maybe add the cheese earlier.

  20. User avatar Miss Jenise Greenfelder says:

This was delicious! Never thought a simple sandwich could taste so good. I’ll definitely make it again.

  21. User avatar ahmed.lang52 says:

Sounds fancy but isn’t it just a grilled cheese with an egg? Not really impressed.

  22. User avatar shirely.mccullough15 says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but I think 400°F is a little too hot. My bread got dark before the cheese fully melted. Maybe lower the temp next time.

    1. User avatar isabell.volkman says:

      5 stars
I totally get that—oven temps vary a lot. I’ve had better luck with 375°F when the bread browns fast. Maybe cover loosely with foil for the first couple minutes too.

    2. 4 stars
Yeah 400°F cooks the outside quick. If your cheese wasn’t melted, try baking 8-10 min or use thinner bread/cheese slices. Foil helps prevent burning.

  23. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

    3 stars
It was okay, but the cheese barely melted. I think I baked it too long!

  24. User avatar ty.blanda27 says:

    2 stars
I don’t get the fuss. For me, it’s basically just a ham-and-cheese with an egg. Why not do it on the stovetop instead of baking?

  25. User avatar Ms. Melvina Schuppe says:

    4 stars
Quick question: can I use cheddar? I tried gruyere once and it’s expensive in my country. I used cheddar today and it melted fine, just a little less fancy.

  26. User avatar jarrod.bogisich says:

    4 stars
Ate this for lunch and it was great! But you gotta use good cheese! I just used whatever I had.

    1. User avatar zack.kuvalis7 says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! Good cheese makes all the difference! I used aged cheddar once and it was amazing!

    2. User avatar stormy.nicolas91 says:

      3 stars
But like, what if your cheese isn’t that great? I dunno, I think it could be tricky… maybe a lower score for that?

  27. User avatar coleman.kilback84 says:

    2 stars
I dunno, I tried it, but it was pretty bland. Maybe I missed something? Will try again and add some spices.

  28. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

This is my go-to brunch sandwich. The Dijon + melty Gruyère combo is perfect, and 6–8 minutes in a hot oven really nails the texture.

    1. User avatar Nunu & Willump says:

      5 stars
Yes! The Dijon and Gruyère combo is the whole point. I usually do closer to 8 minutes so the edges get nice and toasty—works every time.

  29. User avatar tera.schuster58 says:

    4 stars
I followed the steps exactly and the cheese didn’t fully melt—maybe my slices were too thick? The egg was runny like you said, so that part was perfect.

    1. 5 stars
Yup, thicker cheese slices can take longer to melt at 400°F. Next time try thinner slices (or shred it) and maybe add 1–2 minutes—just watch the bread so it doesn’t overbrown. Glad the runny yolk part hit though!

  30. User avatar isreal.bashirian says:

    5 stars
Croque Madame is my comfort food. Using Gruyère is key—makes it taste fancy even when I’m lazy.
