Corn on the Cob

July 26, 2024

Corn on the cob is the ultimate summer side dish – simple, nostalgic, and bursting with sweet, buttery flavor. Whether it’s grilled, boiled, or roasted, fresh corn is a seasonal favorite that brings a sense of joy to any picnic, barbecue, or casual dinner. Its golden kernels, juicy snap, and satisfying crunch make it a beloved classic that never goes out of style.

What makes corn on the cob so special is its versatility and ease. It requires very little preparation but delivers maximum flavor. At its most basic, a freshly shucked ear of corn, boiled until tender and brushed with butter and a pinch of salt, is enough to make anyone smile. But corn is also a blank canvas for creativity. You can char it on the grill for smoky depth, slather it in flavored butters or spices, or even roll it in cheese and herbs for a more decadent experience.

One of the best ways to enjoy corn on the cob is straight off the grill. Grilling adds a slight smokiness and caramelizes the natural sugars in the corn, enhancing its flavor. It’s also the perfect way to serve it during outdoor gatherings. Guests can customize their own corn with toppings like chili powder, lime, Parmesan, fresh herbs, or even mayonnaise for a street corn-style twist.

Beyond flavor, corn on the cob is a celebration of summer itself. It’s often one of the first things people think of when planning a cookout or holiday meal. Eating it can be a little messy, but that’s part of the fun. There’s something undeniably satisfying about biting into a fresh, juicy cob and letting the sweet kernels burst with flavor.

Whether served simply with butter or dressed up with bold toppings, corn on the cob remains a beloved summertime favorite – nostalgic, delicious, and always a crowd-pleaser.

Corn took too long to cook!! Next time I’ll just microwave or something. 🙄

  2. User avatar Feral Falmer says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but mine took closer to 12 minutes to get tender. Also, butter made it a little too rich for my taste.

I think butter is what makes it good 😅 but maybe try less. Also “boil 7-10” is kinda vague—my corn always needs longer. Salt too early might mess it up? Not sure, but I just season at the end.

    2. User avatar hillary.wilkinson says:

      5 stars
Yeah, 12 minutes sounds right depending on the corn. Fresh vs older ears changes everything. I usually check with a fork too—if it’s not tender, I keep going.

  3. 4 stars
Corn good. Easy cook. Like butter, but no take. 🤷‍♂️

  4. 5 stars
This corn recipe is a classic! Very easy and the butter makes it so tasty. Love it!

  5. User avatar anton.gislason says:

    2 stars
My corn was meh… maybe I used old corn? The kernels weren’t as sweet as I hoped, even with butter.

  6. 3 stars
My kids loved it! But I think we let it boil too long and it got mushy. Next time I will set a timer.

  7. 5 stars
This recipe is so simple, I love it! Perfect for summer BBQs!

Corn on the cob, who even eats that? Not a fan, sorry.

  9. User avatar Walter Erdman says:

    5 stars
    YUM!

  10. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

Is corn really that good or is it just a hype? I find it kinda bland.

  11. 3 stars
Gonna try with chili powder instead of salt, hope it’s good!

  12. User avatar lois.hodkiewicz says:

    3 stars
Too much salt if u not careful. Use less!!!

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree! I always start with less salt and then add more if needed. Better safe than sorry!

  13. 4 stars
Can’t go wrong with corn on the cob! I added some parmesan cheese on top, yum!

    1. User avatar Janeth Waters says:

      2 stars
I dunno, corn with cheese sounds weird to me. Just butter and salt is best.

    2. User avatar willow.hansen31 says:

      5 stars
Parmesan cheese? That’s a game changer! I’m definitely trying that next time.

  14. User avatar pasquale.nitzsche5 says:

    2 stars
Really? Just boiling corn? Seems kinda basic to me. I thought there would be more to it.

  15. 4 stars
Make sure to use fresh corn. The frozen stuff just won’t taste the same! 😩

  16. User avatar sebastian.johns23 says:

    3 stars
Is it really necessary to add butter? Corn’s sweet on its own! But, I tried it and it was okay.

  17. 5 stars
5 stars for how simple this is! Thanks!

  18. 5 stars
This is the best corn recipe! So simple and delicious. Will make it again for sure!

  19. User avatar colton.bechtelar32 says:

    3 stars
Ok but 7-10 min seems random. Like do you mean medium boil or a hard rolling one? I’m guessing mine was softer.

    1. 5 stars
Yeah it does sound random, but it’s really “until tender.” If your water’s at a true rolling boil, 7–10 min is usually right—hard to say exactly because cob size varies. Soft kernels = you were probably done early, which is fine.

    2. User avatar norbert.kshlerin61 says:

      4 stars
I tried it and mine was more like 5 minutes… 10 made it kinda mushy. Also my water wasn’t really boiling-boiling, just kinda simmering, so I think that’s why. Next time I’ll start checking at 6 mins.

  20. User avatar jacquelynn.collier1951 says:

    3 stars
Followed the steps, but my corn was kinda chewy. What did I do wrong?

  21. User avatar margart.altenwerth2006 says:

    3 stars
I don’t get why you boil it. Grilling is so much better. 3/5.

  22. User avatar chery.boyer4 says:

    4 stars
My pot was too small so I had to cut the cob in half. Worked fine, but cook time might change—just check with a fork.

  23. 4 stars
I’ve been eating corn since I was a lil kid. Always have some during summer. Yummy!

  24. User avatar chi.boyle1978 says:

    5 stars
So simple yet so delicious!!! Must try!

  25. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

    2 stars
I think it needed more butter… or maybe just too much corn??

  26. User avatar lucius.klein2014 says:

    1 star
Corn should not be cooked in water. Tried it once, it was soggy. Never again!

  27. User avatar jewell.armstrong68 says:

    3 stars
Melted butter? I just use margarine. Is that bad?

  28. User avatar vernon.nicolas3 says:

    2 stars
Just corn and butter? Blah, needs something more, like a spice mix!

  29. User avatar Falmer Spellsword says:

    5 stars
    Corn is great! 🌽

    1. 2 stars
Not really a fan of corn. Too mushy and sweet for me.

    1. User avatar kelsi.bartoletti says:

      5 stars
I used to boil mine for 20 min! Gonna try the 7 mins now, thanks! 🥳

  34. User avatar terence.thiel says:

    3 stars
Soo easy but not sure about the butter, it’s a bit too greasy for my taste.

  35. User avatar lashell.cruickshank23 says:

    4 stars
Corn is so sweet when cooked fresh. I can eat this all summer long!

  36. 2 stars
Not my favorite, I prefer it with cheese instead of butter. Kind of bland, honestly.

    1. User avatar selene.durgan20 says:

      5 stars
I totally get you! Cheese makes everything better. Have you tried adding parmesan on top? It’s a game changer!

  37. User avatar Mrs. Carol Windler says:

    4 stars
Yummm! But I used margarine instead of butter. Still good!

  38. User avatar billy.upton says:

    4 stars
Boiling corn? Is that the only way? What if i grill?

  39. 5 stars
Not gonna lie, boiling corn is too easy lol. Still… it’s better than the sad corn at parties. 10/10 for effort-to-taste ratio.

  40. User avatar gus.lehner2018 says:

    2 stars
Is corn really that healthy? Seems like a side dish, not a meal. 🤷‍♂️

  41. 1 star
This was a disaster! I overcooked my corn and it was mushy. Sigh.

  42. User avatar emmitt.doyle6 says:

    5 stars
Delicious! Made this last night and it was gone in minutes! 😋

    1. 5 stars
So glad you loved it! It really is a simple and tasty dish! 🌽❤️

  43. 4 stars
I made it for a BBQ and everybody loved it. Really fresh corn!

  44. User avatar rolland.rempel60 says:

    5 stars
Super simple and honestly perfect. Boiling 8 minutes was the sweet spot—tender but still juicy. The butter + salt/pepper combo makes it taste like summer.

    1. User avatar long.wisozk48 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—8 minutes nailed it. The butter + salt/pepper combo really does taste like summer. 🌽

  45. User avatar bruce.aufderhar says:

    5 stars
Yum!! Corn on the cob is the best! 🍽️☀️

  46. User avatar rolf.mccullough10 says:

    4 stars
I forgot to cool it a few minutes and burned my tongue like an idiot 😅 Tasted good after though. Next time I’ll wait.

    1. User avatar josef.volkman says:

      5 stars
Haha been there 😅 Burning the tongue is basically part of the corn experience. Next time just let it rest a couple more minutes and you’ll be golden!

  47. User avatar bibi.nader8 says:

    3 stars
I followed it but it tasted kinda bland, even with salt and pepper. Next time I’ll try garlic butter or a little smoked paprika.

  48. User avatar carletta.schiller69 says:

    5 stars
Delicious! I made this for my kids and they loved it! So easy to make.

  49. 5 stars
Delicious! But I skipped the butter and used olive oil instead. Still great!

  50. User avatar beatris.haag says:

    3 stars
Yum! But too much salt can ruin it!

  51. User avatar michal.barton92 says:

    5 stars
This recipe is great! The corn came out perfectly tender. I added some garlic powder too.

  52. 2 stars
I tried this recipe, but my corn was too mushy. I think I boiled it too long…

    1. User avatar petronila.roob says:

      4 stars
Boiling for too long can definitely mess up the texture! Maybe try timing it better next time?

  53. User avatar Michael83 says:

    4 stars
Tried it and it came out great, but I think 10 minutes was a bit much for my corn. Next time I’ll pull it closer to 7. Still a keeper though.

    1. User avatar madelyn.baumbach says:

      4 stars
Hmm 7-10 is kinda wide 😅 I think if you overcook it the kernels get kinda… chewy? Next time I’m gonna start timing at 7. Thanks!

    2. 5 stars
Good call! Corn really does vary—my ears are sometimes ready closer to 7 minutes too. “Easily pierced” is the real key anyway.

  54. User avatar tyree.schiller83 says:

    3 stars
Honestly, doesn’t boiling corn just make it mushy? I prefer grilling it for that smoky flavor.

  55. User avatar otha.hagenes says:

    1 star
This should be 1 minute boil! It’s corn, not a roast.

    1. User avatar jarrod.casper says:

      5 stars
I think you’re right! Corn doesn’t need that long. I usually do about 3 mins max.

    2. User avatar elvis.olson89 says:

      2 stars
Yeah, but if you wanna make sure it’s really good, you gotta cook it longer. Just saying.

  56. User avatar migdalia.herzog says:

    3 stars
I added some chili powder and lime juice, it came out okay, but not like my mom’s. 🤷‍♂️

  57. User avatar frances.thompson says:

    4 stars
Corn?? My dad says it makes mice in your tummy! Lol!

  58. User avatar margherita.runolfsson1961 says:

    5 stars
Yum! Corn on the cob, my summer fave! 🌽 Can’t mess this up!

    1. User avatar Miss Ahmad Lubowitz says:

      2 stars
I dunno, but boiled corn seems kinda plain. Too simple, right?

    2. User avatar floyd.yundt says:

      5 stars
Absolutely! Corn on the cob is the best, especially with butter! 👍

  59. User avatar Tryndamere says:

    2 stars
I don’t get why people boil it—grilling is way better. This was fine, just kinda bland unless you go heavy on salt.

  60. User avatar briana.gorczany2014 says:

    4 stars
Make sure you put salt on it before eating!!! Sooooooo good.

    1. User avatar marline.kuhlman says:

      5 stars
Absolutely! Salt makes it so much better! But don’t forget the butter! Yum!

    2. 3 stars
Yeah, but isn’t corn sweet already? Do we really need salt?
