Chicken Tikka is a flavorful and aromatic Indian dish made from marinated chicken pieces that are cooked to perfection, often skewered and grilled or roasted. The marinade is the key to its vibrant flavor, combining a mixture of yogurt, spices, and herbs to infuse the chicken with rich, tangy, and smoky flavors. This dish is a popular choice for both casual meals and special occasions, and it can be enjoyed on its own or as part of a larger Indian feast.
The process of making Chicken Tikka begins with marinating the chicken in a mixture of yogurt, garlic, ginger, garam masala, turmeric, cumin, coriander, and chili powder. This marinade tenderizes the chicken while adding deep, complex flavors. The yogurt not only acts as a tenderizer but also helps the spices adhere to the chicken, ensuring every bite is packed with flavor. After marinating for a few hours (or even overnight for the best results), the chicken is cooked until golden brown and slightly charred, typically on skewers in a tandoor or oven.
Traditionally, Chicken Tikka is served as an appetizer or snack with naan bread or rice. It is often accompanied by cooling raita (yogurt sauce), fresh cilantro, and a squeeze of lime. The smoky, spiced chicken pairs beautifully with the fresh, tangy raita, offering a perfect balance of flavors and textures.
For those who prefer a lighter option, Chicken Tikka can be served on a salad or as part of a wrap with vegetables and a drizzle of dressing. This versatility makes it a popular choice for meal prepping, as it can be used in various dishes throughout the week.
Chicken Tikka is a crowd-pleasing dish thatās easy to make yet full of depth and complexity. Whether enjoyed on its own or incorporated into other meals, itās a comforting and flavorful option thatās sure to satisfy.

Yummm! The kids loved it, even my picky eater! Will make again.
Did it rain here? because my grill didn’t work at all!
This seems like a lot of work for chicken. Donāt you just buy it pre-marinated?
Ain’t nobody got time for all that! Just grab it at the store, it’s way easier.
I get what you mean, but trust me, homemade is way better! Pre-marinated chicken just doesn’t have that fresh taste. š
I followed the recipe but my chicken turned out dry. What did I do wrong? š
Maybe it was overcooked? That happens a lot with chicken.
I dunno, Iām just a bad cook too. Chicken is tough for me sometimes.
Is the yogurt really necessary? I donāt like yogurt but can I replace it with something else?
I think the yogurt is important for flavor and tenderness. Maybe just give it a try?
You can use buttermilk or even coconut milk as a substitute! Just make sure to get that tangy flavor.
Very easy recipe! Wish I had more time to marinate it longer, but it was still good.
Not convinced about 10-12 minutes. Chicken breast cubes can be trickyāif theyāre bigger, they might not be fully cooked. Would prefer checking internal temp.
Yeah Iām with youā10-12 min depends a lot on cube size and oven/grill strength. I always go by internal temp too (165°F/74°C). Otherwise you risk dry chicken.
I donāt think chicken tikka needs so many spices. Maybe just some salt and pepper is enough?
Tastes great! But why you marinate overnight? Seems like too much work.
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about garam masala + chili powder without any additional spices, but it surprised me. Very authentic-ish. I added a pinch of sugar and it balanced the lemon nicely.
Hmm I donāt know. Garam masala + chili powder alone usually tastes kinda flat to me. Also 10-12 min on medium-high⦠could be undercooked depending on skewer size? Iād add extra cumin/garlic maybe. But hey, if it works for you!
I was skeptical too, but your note about adding a pinch of sugar makes sense. Lemon can be a little sharp if the spices arenāt rounding it out. I might try that next timeāotherwise this combo feels surprisingly legit.
Wow, I never thought I could make chicken tikka this good at home! Love it!
That’s awesome to hear! Chicken tikka is one of my favorites. I can’t wait to try your version!
Yum! This was a hit at our BBQ. Everyone asked for the recipe!
I tried this but used beef instead of chicken. It was a disaster lol! Stick to chicken, friends!
Pretty solid flavor, but I think my chicken was a little dry because I may have grilled too long. Next time Iāll watch the thickness of the cubes more closely. Still delicious with naan.
Kinda shocked it turned out as good as it did! Never grilled chicken before.
chicken tikka is my fav food ever!! So glad I found this!
Only used half the spices by accident, but it still tasted good. Not sure if that was a `good or bad` luck!
This sounds nice but Iām not doing skewers. Can I just bake it as chunks? Also is it supposed to be spicy-spicy? My chili powder was strong.
Why do people keep calling it tikka? Itās just grilled chicken on skewers! š¤Ø
Simpel and tasty! Good for a lunch or dinner. Just add rice. Will make again.
Why yogurt + lemon? I think it curdled on me a little, not super pleasant texture. Flavor was okay but the mouthfeel bothered me.
Yogurt + lemon can curdle, yeah. Next time maybe just use yogurt and skip lemon, or use lime? Lemon is acidic and it kinda separates the protein. If yours tasted āokayā then it wasnāt ruined, just the mouthfeelāannoying though.
I get what you meanāyogurt can go a little grainy if the chicken gets too much direct heat or the marinade sits too long. Iāve found using full-fat yogurt + not skipping the ārestā helps the texture a lot. Also, try reducing the lemon juice a bit and add it closer to grilling.
Chicken too dry for me. Next time I’ll add more yogurt, I guess.
1 hour is not enough for me. By the time I cooked, the chicken felt like it needed more seasoning. Iāll do overnight next time for sure.
Not bad, but I think it needs more lemon maybe? Idk…
Okay but why is it only 250g chicken? I doubled everything and still wished I had more saucey bits. Also I added a little smoked paprikaānot traditional maybe, but wow.
Totally get thatā250g chicken can feel a bit skimpy if youāre craving lots of saucy bits. If you doubled the marinade too, it might help to either increase chicken or make sure youāre using enough yogurt/marinade per surface area. Smoked paprika sounds awesome thoughāstill fits that ātikka but with a twistā vibe!
I tried this but my chicken was dry. Maybe I overcooked it? Not sure I’ll try again.
This recipe is fantastic! The chicken turned out so juicy and flavorful. Will definitely make again! ššššš
This recipe sounds nice, but chicken can be dry if overcooked, right? š¤
I’m so glad you liked it! It’s one of my favorites too. Do you have any tips for grilling? š„
Tasted good, but I think I need a better grill. Still happy!
I don’t cook much but this seemed easy! Just wish someone else could grill for me.
I totally get you! Grilling can be tough. Maybe ask a friend to help out? This recipe looks easy enough to try though! š
Just made it. Kinda dry. Next time more yogurt?
This is totally not an authentic Chicken Tikka. You forgot the spices!
Made this for dinner and it actually tastes like the takeaway spot near me. The marinade smelled amazingāmarinated overnight and grilled exactly 11 minutes. Juicy and not dry at all. 10/10 would do again!
This recipe is AMAZING! So flavorful and tender. My family loved it!
Yum! Best chicken I’ve ever made at home. Just like from the restaurant! So happy I found this!
Yas! Love this tikka! Perfect for my BBQ party! Everyone loved it!!
This Chicken Tikka was awesome! So juicy and flavorful. Definitely a keeper!
I totally agree! This Chicken Tikka recipe is my go-to now! So easy and delish!
Sounds great but I don’t think chicken should be marinated overnight. Isn’t that too long?
I wasn’t a fan of the yogurt. Can’t spicy food be just spicy without all this extra stuff?
This is more like āgrilled chicken with spicesā than tikka š Also I used Greek yogurt and it tasted a bit tangy. Could be my mistake, but I wasnāt in love.
I was skeptical about marinating for so long, but I did it overnight and woah!
I know right! Marinating really makes a difference. I usually do it for at least 8 hours too!
Really? Over night? I thought it would be too much. Did it really change the flavor that much?
This recipe is AMAZING!! The chicken turned out super juicy and flavorful. Definitely making it again!
