Chicken Tikka Masala

September 20, 2024

Chicken Tikka Masala is one of the most beloved dishes in Indian cuisine, known for its rich, creamy sauce and bold, aromatic flavors. The dish features tender chunks of marinated chicken cooked in a spiced tomato-based sauce, creating a perfect balance of smoky, savory, and slightly tangy flavors. Served with basmati rice or naan bread, Chicken Tikka Masala is a comforting and satisfying meal that’s both flavorful and hearty. Whether you’re a fan of Indian food or new to the cuisine, this dish is sure to impress with its depth of flavor and luxurious, creamy texture.

The key to a great Chicken Tikka Masala lies in the marinated chicken. The chicken is typically marinated in a mixture of yogurt, garlic, ginger, and a blend of spices like cumin, coriander, turmeric, and garam masala. This marinade not only tenderizes the chicken but also infuses it with a deep, aromatic flavor. The chicken is then grilled or baked, which gives it a smoky flavor before being added to the creamy, spiced sauce.

The sauce itself is the heart of Chicken Tikka Masala. Made with a base of tomatoes, onions, and garlic, it’s simmered with a variety of spices, including cumin, paprika, and garam masala, to create a rich, flavorful foundation. Cream or coconut milk is then added to the sauce to give it a silky, smooth texture, which balances out the spiciness and enhances the dish’s richness. The combination of spices and cream creates a sauce that is both fragrant and comforting.

Chicken Tikka Masala can be served with a variety of sides. Traditional options include steamed basmati rice, which soaks up the sauce perfectly, or freshly baked naan bread for dipping. You can also add a side of cucumber raita to cool down the spice or a fresh green salad to balance the richness of the dish. For those looking for a spicier kick, a few chopped chilies can be added to the sauce to heat things up.

This dish is highly versatile and can be made in advance, allowing the flavors to develop even further. It’s perfect for feeding a crowd, making it a great choice for family dinners, special occasions, or casual gatherings. Whether you’re a seasoned cook or just beginning your journey into Indian cuisine, Chicken Tikka Masala is a dish that is sure to delight with every bite.

Followed the recipe but added too much salt. Oops 😅 but still tasty!

  2. 5 stars
Yessssss! The flavors medley so well together. Made it for my family and they loved it!

  3. 3 stars
The heavy cream made it too rich for my taste idk. Maybe use less next time.

    1. 3 stars
Rich? Thought rich is always better! But hey, to each their own. Maybe I’ll try with less cream next time too.

    2. User avatar tamra.jenkins says:

      4 stars
I totally get what you mean! Heavy cream can be a lot. Maybe try half and half next time for a lighter touch?

  4. 3 stars
I tried this and it was ok, but kinda too spicy for me. I think less cumin next time.

    1. User avatar rey.fahey90 says:

      4 stars
I find that too much cumin can really overpower the dish. Maybe try using just one teaspoon next time? 👍

  5. User avatar billy.schmidt15 says:

Tika Masala? More like Chicken Mess-ala! It was a disaster in my kitchen. Never again.

  6. User avatar kimberley.cole48 says:

So much cream! I thought this was healthy 😂. Whatever, still yum!

    1. User avatar alline.swaniawski43 says:

      5 stars
I know right! But who can resist creamy goodness? 😋

  7. 2 stars
Not bad, but it didn’t taste like the tikka masala I get at restaurants. Feels more like butter chicken. Also, I ran out of cilantro so I skipped garnish—maybe that’s why.

  8. User avatar gretchen.borer2021 says:

    2 stars
Really good but took longer than 20 mins in the sauce. Chicken was still pink!

  9. User avatar Feyd-Rautha Rabban says:

    4 stars
Yum! This was way better than takeout. I even added some extra spices like chili flakes for a kick. Will make again!

    1. 5 stars
I tried this recipe too! Adding extra spices made a big difference, right? Love how easy it is to make. Thanks for sharing!

  10. User avatar sheba.ratke43 says:

This recipe is amazing! The chicken turned so tender and flavorful. I’ll definitely make it again.

  11. User avatar barry.labadie35 says:

Didn’t have cilantro, so I used parsley. Still tasted pretty good! 🤷‍♀️

    1. User avatar Gormlaith says:

      5 stars
Glad it worked out! Parsley isn’t too different from cilantro, right? Can’t wait to try this myself!

This recipe was amazing! My family loved it!

    1. User avatar valarie.grimes says:

I totally agree! This dish is like a party in your mouth! 🎉

  13. 2 stars
I don’t think it turned out right. My sauce was too runny, and the chicken was kinda dry. Maybe there’s too much yogurt?

  14. User avatar merlene.schowalter10 says:

    5 stars
Yum! This recipe is bomb! The flavors are on point. My family loved it! Will be making again.

    1. User avatar clarita.dach40 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree! This dish has become a family favorite since I tried it. Thanks for sharing!

  15. 1 star
Cilantro? Who puts that in chicken!? Smells weird. Coulda been better without it.

  16. 3 stars
I don’t know… the yogurt made it too tangy for me. Can I skip it?

  17. User avatar wesley.corwin60 says:

    4 stars
The spices smell amazing while cooking, not gonna lie. I added a pinch of sugar because my tomato sauce was very acidic. That fixed it for me. Would make again.

    1. User avatar vincent.dooley says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome—adding a pinch of sugar is such a smart fix for acidity. 😋 I always forget that trick until it’s too late. Glad it worked for you!

    2. User avatar hoyt.cruickshank says:

      4 stars
Interesting! I’ve heard sugar helps, but I usually just add more cream and simmer longer. Tomato sauce can vary a lot though—might try your pinch next time. Sounds tasty.

  18. User avatar Jean Becker says:

    3 stars
Tastes good, but why so much cream? Isn’t it too rich? 🍽️

  19. User avatar kermit.skiles says:

    3 stars
I don’t really get the appeal of Chicken Tikka Masala. Too creamy for my taste and not spicy enough. But my cousin loves it!

    1. User avatar Piter De Vries says:

      3 stars
Too creamy? Nah, that’s the best part! But I guess everyone got different taste buds. Maybe try it with less cream?

    2. 4 stars
I totally get what you mean! I tried it once and it was way too creamy for me too. I prefer my food more spicy, like a proper curry!

  20. 5 stars
This is the best Chicken Tikka Masala I’ve ever made! So creamy and full of flavor. Will definitely make again!

    1. User avatar Master Yi says:

      2 stars
I don’t think it’s that great. Mine turned out too spicy and creamy. Maybe I did something wrong?

    2. User avatar Kah Mael says:

      5 stars
I’ve tried many recipes, but this one really nails it! Thanks for sharing. 🔥

  21. 5 stars
Y’all, this was dope! My friends were impressed! 🎉

  22. 5 stars
So good! Better than what I get at the restaurant! 🍽️

  23. 2 stars
Did you really put heavy cream? That’s not how we do it in India! Just saying.

  24. 3 stars
I don’t think I’ve ever seen tikka masala use this much cream. Isn’t it supposed to be more tomatoey?

  25. User avatar tiffani.ullrich77 says:

    1 star
I think something must be wrong with the method cause mine turned out really watery. Any tips?

  26. User avatar dolores.ortiz25 says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but the ingredient list feels a little random? Like 2 tsp garam masala for the chicken and then more cumin/paprika in the sauce. Still tasty though—just didn’t taste super authentic to me.

  27. User avatar Draugr Death Overlord says:

    5 stars
Yummy! I added some peas for a pop of color. Will make again!

    1. User avatar lamar.flatley43 says:

      5 stars
Adding peas sounds like a great idea! I love when people get creative with recipes. Did you use fresh or frozen peas?

  28. User avatar nicole.gerlach says:

    1 star
I can never seem to get the sauce right. My grandma used to make it better. This recipe just ain’t it.

  29. User avatar Sebastian Jerde says:

    3 stars
It turned out to be way too spicy for my kids. Add less garam masala next time.

  30. 1 star
Too complicated. I prefer simpler recipes. Who has time for all this?

  31. User avatar jose.beatty says:

    3 stars
I tried this and it was okay, but I think I overcooked the chicken. Next time I’ll watch it closer.

  32. User avatar olympia.beahan31 says:

    4 stars
Easy to follow but the chicken was a bit dry after cooking. Next time I’ll let it marinate longer!

    1. User avatar illa.mckenzie89 says:

      2 stars
Dry chicken? Nah, mine turned out fine. Maybe you overcooked it?

    2. 4 stars
I totally get you! Marinating seems to always help, right? Try adding some coconut milk next time, too!

  33. User avatar merissa.langosh1998 says:

    5 stars
Made this last night—so creamy and flavorful. The garam masala + cumin combo is legit. I only had plain yogurt and it still worked great.

    1. User avatar garfield.maggio86 says:

      5 stars
So happy it worked with plain yogurt! Creamy tikka masala is the best. Did you use chicken breast the whole time or add a little extra butter/cream at the end?

    2. User avatar Trin Tragula says:

      3 stars
I dunno… I followed it but mine tasted kinda flat. Maybe I burned the onions or didn’t simmer long enough. Still, it looked good. Would adding garam masala after cooking help?

  34. User avatar darrel.okon says:

    2 stars
Too many ingredients! I like simple things, maybe I’ll try it without the yogurt.

    1. 4 stars
I get it, too much fuss for some! But yogurt adds creaminess. Maybe just skip it this time!

    2. User avatar ayanna.lebsack92 says:

      2 stars
Lmao, yogurt is what makes it tikka masala! Good luck if you skip it, lol.

  35. 4 stars
Yummy! But I used curry paste instead of all those spices and it still turned out good. Quick n easy!

    1. User avatar maria.davis1 says:

      2 stars
But isn’t using all the spices kinda the point? Idk seems like cheating to me.

    2. User avatar zachery.beer65 says:

      4 stars
I bet the curry paste gave it a nice kick! Sometimes shortcuts work out better than expected.

  36. User avatar jonah.johnson67 says:

    4 stars
How many people does this serve? I made it for 4 but wish I doubled it!

  37. 4 stars
Pretty good, but I think 1 cup tomato sauce is a bit much—mine turned slightly tangy. Next time I’ll simmer a little longer to thicken. Still tasty though.

  38. User avatar Mad Batter says:

    2 stars
This is not authentic chicken tikka masala. You gotta use tandoori chicken! What a mess.

    1. User avatar lucky777 says:

      4 stars
I think it sounds delicious, but I get what you’re saying about the tandoori chicken. Still, this recipe looks good to me!

    2. User avatar Mrs. Kendall Zemlak says:

      3 stars
Naw, this recipe is perfectly fine! Authenticity is whatever; I just wanna eat something tasty. Control yourself, buddy.

  39. User avatar ollie.wiza81 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good overall, but I think 20 minutes for the tomato sauce is a bit short. Next time I’ll simmer longer and reduce slightly for a thicker sauce.

  40. User avatar romelia.brekke says:

    4 stars
It was alright, but a bit too spicy for my kids. Next time I’ll use less cumin.

    1. User avatar gail.gerhold says:

      4 stars
I get that! You could try using less cumin, or add some sugar to balance out the spice a bit. My kids love it that way!

    2. User avatar Lavern McGlynn Jr. says:

      2 stars
Too spicy? My kids eat hot wings for breakfast lol. But yeah, everyone has different taste buds.
