Caramel Apple Pie

October 21, 2025

Caramel apple pie brings together everything we love about autumn in one irresistible bite. The tender apples, flaky crust, and gooey caramel filling create a perfect mix of textures and flavors that make this dessert unforgettable. It’s sweet, slightly tart, and wonderfully indulgent, offering comfort in every slice.

The secret to a great caramel apple pie lies in balance. The caramel adds a deep, buttery sweetness that pairs beautifully with the natural tartness of the apples. When baked together, the fruit softens just enough to release its juices, which blend with the caramel to form a luscious, golden filling. The crust, crisp and buttery, holds everything together and adds that satisfying crunch with each bite.

For the filling, tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work best. Their firm texture keeps the pie from becoming too soft, while their tangy flavor cuts through the sweetness of the caramel. A touch of cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla rounds out the flavor, giving it that warm, spiced aroma that fills the kitchen as the pie bakes.

What truly makes this pie special is the homemade caramel sauce. Made from sugar, butter, and cream, it’s rich and silky, coating the apples like liquid gold. Some bakers drizzle caramel inside the filling before baking, while others pour it over the top just before serving for a glossy, decadent finish. Either way, it’s the star that elevates this classic dessert to a whole new level.

Caramel apple pie is best served warm, ideally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream that melts slowly over the top, blending into the caramel for an extra touch of sweetness. It’s perfect for holidays, cozy family dinners, or any day you want to celebrate fall flavors at their best.

Every bite feels like nostalgia, warmth, and comfort rolled into one. With its buttery crust, caramel-drizzled apples, and heavenly aroma, caramel apple pie is the kind of dessert that turns simple ingredients into pure magic.

This pie is absolutely delicious! The caramel really makes it special. Will definitely make again!

I tried it and it was just okay. Too sweet for my taste and the apple filling felt a little watery even after cooling. Maybe my apples were too juicy or I didn’t toss well enough.

  3. 3 stars
It turned out a bit too sweet for my taste. Next time I might reduce the sugar a little.

I added nuts to mine, it was a great twist! Gonna try it again, but with pecans this time.

How do you expect apples to cook in 45 mins? I let mine bake for over an hour!

Apple pie should be made from scratch, not with store crusts! Not even worth it if you cheat like that!

    1. User avatar vernon.wyman says:

Totally agree! Making your own crust is where the magic is. Store-bought just ruins the whole pie experience.

I’m not sure how I feel about caramel in pie. Sounds weird but I guess it could work?

Pie was so good! But I don’t think it actually needs the extra caramel sauce when serving.

    1. User avatar Storm Atronach says:

      2 stars
Nah, man! Caramel makes it better! You gotta have that sweetness to balance the tart apples.

    2. User avatar jason.spinka72 says:

I totally get what you’re saying! It’s such a rich pie already. The caramel can be overkill sometimes.

Yummmm! Best pie I’ve ever had! Your recipe is now my go-to for Thanksgiving! 😍

  11. 4 stars
I used a store-bought crust and it was still really good. Easy recipe!

Mine didn’t set. It was like apple pie soup 😂 I followed the steps but maybe my apples were super watery and I didn’t let it cool long enough. Tasted great anyway.

Oh no—“apple pie soup” is both hilarious and… yeah, I can see that happening 😅 If the apples were watery and it didn’t cool long enough, the filling won’t thicken. Next time I’d try slightly drier apples (or cook them off in the bowl a few minutes) and give it a proper cool—like 1–2 hours.

425°F seems high for pie, but whatever. My crust browned fast, so I should’ve covered the edges with foil sooner. Flavor is good though—caramel + apple is always a win.

    1. 2 stars
425°F is too much in my opinion, my pie always scorches at that temp 😅 maybe your oven runs cooler? Also I think the caramel goes weird if you pour it too early—next time I’ll mix caramel with the apples first.

    2. User avatar Fortune Teller says:

      5 stars
Yeah 425°F can brown things FAST. I usually start checking at ~30 minutes and tent foil over the edges as soon as they get color. But I agree—caramel + apple is undefeated.

I tried this recipe, and it was just okay. My crust came out soggy. Maybe I did something wrong? Not sure. 😕

Made this for a family gathering and it disappeared fast—caramel + cinnamon apples is such a classic combo. Followed the baking time and the crust came out golden.

Seems easy enough, but I don’t trust store-bought caramel. It’s probably full of junk. 😛 #homemadeonly

I totally get you! Homemade caramel is the best, way better than that store junk. Definitely giving this a try with my own caramel! 😊

But store caramel is quick and easy! Sometimes, convenience wins, right? Just don’t overthink it, it’s still gonna be yummy. 😋

  20. User avatar amie.paucek says:

Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about putting caramel in with the apples instead of drizzling after, but it actually works. The filling is thicker and more “sticky” than I expected.

I made something similar and my crust turned out a bit soggy… I’m hoping the 45 minutes at 425°F fixes it. Also, “1 unit pie crust” is weird wording—like how many inches? Still, I’m gonna try it.

    1. User avatar kyoko.becker1 says:

      5 stars
Oof, soggy crust is the worst 😅 But 425°F for 45 mins should help—just make sure the bottom crust is actually baking through, not just browning on top. If you have time next try, bake the bottom crust 5–7 mins first (blind bake) before adding the filling.

    2. User avatar oliver.orn1987 says:

      4 stars
“1 unit pie crust” really is confusing. I’m pretty sure that means one crust package or enough dough for a top and bottom in a 9-inch pie plate. If yours is like 10 inches maybe adjust dough, but 9-inch is the usual.

  22. 1 star
I messed up the crust, it was a disaster. Do I have to pre-bake it? Asking for a friend… 😂

  23. User avatar calvin.schimmel48 says:

    2 stars
Um… I don’t know. I tried this recipe and it came out too sweet for my taste. Maybe I used too much caramel? Not my favorite.

  24. User avatar bryant.mraz says:

    2 stars
One problem: my apples were kinda crunchy after 45 min. Maybe I sliced them too thick. Still tasty, just not as tender as expected.

  25. User avatar ofelia.wiza says:

    3 stars
I don’t like caramel—can I just leave it out? Will the pie still be good?

    1. User avatar Kendrick Schaefer says:

      5 stars
You can totally leave out the caramel! It’ll still taste yummy with just the apples. More of a traditional apple pie vibe.

  26. User avatar lesli.jacobi2022 says:

This pie is absolutely delicious! The caramel adds an amazing twist. I used Granny Smith apples and it turned out perfect! Highly recommend.

Not sure about caramel in apple pie… seems odd to me. I prefer it plain. 🤔

    2. User avatar adrienne.balistreri67 says:

      5 stars
I agree! The caramel makes everything better. I tried it too and loved how the flavors blend together! 😍

  27. 2 stars
This tasted super sweet to me. I think 1 cup sugar is too much for 6 cups apples, unless your apples are really tart.

    1. 4 stars
Maybe you just had sweeter apples? I used Granny Smith and I thought it was fine with the 1 cup sugar. But yea if your apples aint tart, you should reduce it. I also add a bit more cinnamon sometimes.

    2. User avatar Krystina Lebsack says:

      5 stars
I agree—my first time I used the full 1 cup sugar and it was almost like candy. Next time I cut it down to 1/2 cup and it was way better with the apples. Also, the caramel sauce can add a lot of sweetness too.

  28. User avatar kia.schaefer74 says:

    4 stars
Delicious! Got lots of compliments. Apple pie is my favorite and this one is now on the list!

  29. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

Tried with pecans on top, YUM! Adds a nice crunch. Who knew caramel apple pie could be even better?!

  30. 3 stars
The crust came out a little tough on my first try. I think I baked it too close to 45 minutes at high heat—425°F is no joke! Flavor was still good though.

    1. User avatar Latesha Crist says:

      4 stars
Ooh yeah, 425°F can totally toughen the crust if it goes a little long. I usually start checking around 35–40 min and tent with foil if it’s browning too fast. Glad the flavor still hit though!

    2. User avatar reinaldo.zulauf says:

      3 stars
Wait—mine got tough too, but I baked it like 50 minutes and the apples were still crunchy… maybe the apples were too thick? I just kinda winged it. Still tastes good with ice cream 😅
