Irish Apple Cake

March 4, 2025

Irish apple cake is a traditional dessert that captures the cozy essence of home baking. With its tender crumb, juicy apple slices, and subtle spice, it’s a cake that feels comforting and familiar, yet distinctively Irish. Often served with warm custard or a dusting of powdered sugar, this humble treat is perfect for teatime, brunch, or as a simple dessert that highlights the natural sweetness of apples.

What sets Irish apple cake apart is its rustic texture and balance of flavors. Unlike more refined cakes, it’s slightly dense, with a buttery crumb that supports generous layers of sliced apples. Granny Smith or Bramley apples are often used for their tartness, which contrasts beautifully with the sweetness of the batter. As the cake bakes, the apples soften and release their juices, creating moist pockets of flavor throughout each slice.

A hint of spice – typically cinnamon, nutmeg, or cloves – adds warmth without overpowering the apple’s freshness. Some recipes also include a handful of oats or chopped nuts in the topping for extra crunch and a hearty finish. The cake is usually baked in a round tin and cut into wedges, much like a scone or soda bread, adding to its country-style charm.

This cake pairs wonderfully with a dollop of whipped cream, a drizzle of vanilla custard, or even a spoonful of yogurt. Its slightly tart, slightly sweet profile makes it versatile enough to enjoy with breakfast coffee or as a satisfying end to dinner. It’s the kind of cake that tastes just as good the next day, perhaps even better, making it a great option for making ahead.

Irish apple cake is more than a dessert; it’s a celebration of simple ingredients and timeless tradition. With each bite, you get the feeling of a warm kitchen, a family table, and a recipe passed down through generations.

Ingredients

  • 500 g apples preferably Granny Smith, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 250 g all-purpose flour sifted
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 125 g sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 125 g unsalted butter cold and diced
  • 1 large egg beaten
  • 3-4 tbsp milk
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar for sprinkling

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake tin.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and baking powder, then rub in the cold diced butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
  • Add sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg to the flour mixture, and mix well.
  • Stir in the sliced apples, ensuring they are completely coated with the flour mix.
  • Mix the beaten egg with enough milk to make the wet ingredients up to 150ml. Add to the flour and apple mix and stir to a thick batter.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared cake tin, spreading it evenly, and sprinkle the top with granulated sugar.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 50 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Allow the cake to cool in the tin for about 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Serve warm or at room temperature, ideally with a drizzle of custard or cream.

It was okay, but my oven doesn’t heat right. Took forever to bake and I burned the bottom. Should’ve checked it sooner!

I don’t really get why everyone loves this cake. It was kinda bland and the apples were mushy. Maybe I messed up? 🤔

Bland? Really? I loved it! You might have missed a step or maybe your apples weren’t sweet enough? Either way, keep experimenting!

I totally agree! I’ve made it a few times, and sometimes it comes out too mushy for my liking too. Maybe try a different apple variety next time? 😊

I totally get you! It’s always hard to balance sweetness, especially with apples. Less sugar sounds good! 🍏

What apples do I use? Green/red? Does it matter?

    1. User avatar renato.leuschke1 says:

      5 stars
You should really use Granny Smith apples! They give the cake a nice tart flavor. Red apples are too sweet for it, I think.

    I don’t have a cake tin, can I just use a baking pan? 🤔

    1. User avatar Shella Borer says:

      2 stars
I dunno, isn’t a cake tin supposed to help with the shape? What if it flattens out?

    2. User avatar dan.quitzon says:

      5 stars
Yeah, you can use a baking pan! Just make sure to adjust the baking time a bit. 😁

I’m skeptical about the baking powder. Doesn’t seem like enough for a cake this size. Anyone else think so?

  24. User avatar Hillman Hunter says:

    3 stars
I tried this but it turned out too dry. Maybe I didn’t add enough milk? I think my apples were too old too.

The instructions were confusing, what is a skewer?? Is it a stick or what?

    1. User avatar rodney.grady says:

      4 stars
Lol, just a stick?? Really? I thought it was something fancy! But I guess it’s just a stick then. Thanks for clearing that up!

    2. User avatar senaida.koepp10 says:

      5 stars
A skewer is basically just a stick that you use to check if the cake is done. You stick it in the middle, and if it comes out clean, the cake is ready! Don’t worry, it’s a common term in baking.

  29. User avatar Great Fairy says:

Horrible! My cake collapsed in the oven! What did I do wrong?

  30. User avatar ashlea.schneider1950 says:

    4 stars
I don’t like nutmeg, can I leave it out? Or does it change the whole flavor?

  31. User avatar kelsey.bogan says:

    4 stars
Is Granny Smith apples really the best for this? I used red ones by mistake and it worked fine!

    1. 2 stars
Nah, doesn’t matter much. Apples are apples, right? Just bake it!

    2. User avatar phillip.ankunding3 says:

      4 stars
I think Granny Smiths are preferred for their tartness, but if red apples worked for you, that’s awesome! Every oven is different!

  36. User avatar letty.rogahn says:

  37. 5 stars
Yummy! I added some raisins because why not? Turned out amazing!

  38. User avatar aiko.gulgowski says:

  42. 3 stars
Not traditional Irish apple cake. I thought there’d be more spices like in a pie. Disappointed!

  43. User avatar herb.koch90 says:
