Matcha baked doughnuts are a vibrant and modern take on a nostalgic favorite. With their beautiful green hue and subtle, earthy sweetness, these doughnuts are the perfect balance of indulgent and wholesome. They’re baked instead of fried, making them a lighter option that still satisfies your doughnut cravings.
The star ingredient, matcha powder, brings a unique depth of flavor and a boost of antioxidants. Its naturally bitter and grassy notes are mellowed by just the right amount of sugar and vanilla in the batter, creating a perfectly balanced bite. The doughnut texture is light and cakey, thanks to the use of baking powder and buttermilk (or yogurt for a tangy alternative), with a soft crumb that melts in your mouth.
Making these doughnuts is quick and simple. The batter comes together in one bowl and bakes in less than 15 minutes. If you have a doughnut pan, you’re already halfway there. Once cooled, you can glaze them with a sweet matcha icing or dust them with powdered sugar for a cleaner finish. For extra flair, add a few sesame seeds or white chocolate drizzle on top.
These baked treats are ideal for breakfast on the go, a midday snack, or a playful addition to brunch. They also make a beautiful gift or dessert for anyone who appreciates matcha’s distinct flavor. Plus, they’re easy to customize, you can adjust the matcha strength or even make them vegan or gluten-free with a few substitutions.
Best of all, you don’t have to deal with hot oil or deep frying. Just pop them in the oven and enjoy the comforting smell of sweet matcha wafting through your kitchen.
Matcha baked doughnuts offer a touch of elegance with every bite. Whether you’re a matcha lover or just curious to try something new, these doughnuts are a fun and flavorful way to elevate your baking routine. Serve with green tea or a creamy latte and savor the moment.

- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 egg large
- Matcha Glaze Decorating option 1
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon matcha powder depending on desired green color
- 1 tbsp almond milk
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease a doughnut pan.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and matcha powder.
- In another bowl, whisk together the milk, melted butter, vanilla extract, and egg.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
- Spoon the batter into the prepared doughnut pan, filling each cavity about 3/4 full.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into a doughnut comes out clean.
- Remove from the oven and let the doughnuts cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Serve the doughnuts as is or dust them with powdered sugar or matcha powder or with matcha glaze.

YUM!! I love matcha! I could eat these every day! Also, super easy to make. Got my kids involved, they loved it too!
Matcha? More like meh-cha. Didn’t like them at all. Kinda disappointed.
I was skeptical about matcha and doughnuts but this recipe changed my mind. Just wish the glaze was sweeter!
Oh wow, these are delicious! The glaze is the perfect touch. My friends loved them at the party! ❤️
These doughnuts are absolutely delicious! I love the matcha flavor. Will definitely make again!
I tried these and they came out a bit dry. Maybe I overbaked them? Not sure if I’ll make them again.
Ok, but like, what’s matcha? Is it a green tea or something?
Matcha doughnuts??? Who even thought of that?!!!
Yummy! I added some sprinkles on top for extra fun. Will make again for sure!
I didn’t have a doughnut pan, so I used a muffin tin instead. They still turned out yummy!
Yum! They smell so good when baking. I would recommend these to anyone who loves matcha.
I messed this up—I used self-rising flour instead of all-purpose. Still tasted ok but not doughnut-y enough! Ha!
I don’t see how anyone could like these. The taste was just… weird. Sorry.
These doughnuts are just glorified muffins. Not the same if you ask me.👎
I get what you’re saying, but these doughnuts are way more than muffins! They’re unique and tasty if you give them a shot. 😋
Nah, I think you’re wrong. These are definitely not muffins! They’re a different experience for sure. 🤷♂️
So easy to make, but mine came out a bit dense. Maybe I mixed too much? Still delicious though!
These doughnuts are AMAZING! The matcha flavor is just right. My kids loved them!
I’m so glad your kids loved them! Matcha is such a unique flavor, and these doughnuts sound perfect for a fun family treat.
I used coconut milk instead of almond milk, and they turned out great!
Honestly, the matcha flavor was too strong for me. I don’t think I’ll make them again.
These were AMAZING! I loved the matcha flavor. Definitely an instant favorite!
I don’t have a doughnut pan, can I use muffin tins? Idk if it will work..
I can’t even pronounce ‘matcha’. These look fancy but too much work for me. Not trying it.
I get it! It does sound complicated, but you can simplify it. Maybe try just the plain doughnuts first?
Yum! I added some chocolate chips to the batter. Perfection! 😍
Chocolate chips? That’s a great idea! I bet it adds a nice touch to the matcha flavor. Gonna try it next time! 🍩
Tried making these, but they turned out too dry. I might’ve overbaked them.
Not bad! But what is matcha exactly? I’m guessing it’s green tea or something? Anyway, they taste fine.
These doughnuts feel extra healthy and it’s soooo easy! Thanks for this recipe! 🥰
Matcha? Is that like green tea? I didn’t have matcha powder, used cocoa instead. Not the same, lol.
Lol I thought these were gonna be fried donuts! I’m still learning the differences. But they were okay.
Doughnuts should be fried, not baked! Not real doughnuts. Disappointed.
I get where you’re coming from, but these baked ones are actually quite tasty! Maybe give it a try before judging?
Matcha doughnuts? Yuck! I’d rather have chocolate. Not a fan of this green stuff.
These are the best doughnuts! So fluffy and tasty!
Can I use almond flour instead of all-purpose? Some say it could work, not sure why not!
Pretty good! I added some chocolate chips and it made them better! 🍩
This is a great recipe! But mine didn’t rise much. I followed it exactly, but they came out flat. Anyone else have this problem?
I had the same issue! I think maybe my baking powder was old. Did you check yours?
I don’t think the matcha flavor was strong enough for my taste. I might add more matcha next time.
Super easy recipe, but I used too much milk and they turned out flat. Gotta follow the instructions better next time.
These doughnuts were amazing! Matcha is my favorite, and these are the best I’ve ever made! 5 stars for sure!
Glad you loved them! Matcha is such a unique flavor, it really elevates baked goods. I’ll have to try your version!
The instructions were clear and they baked perfectly. My new fave recipe!
Um, like, is it even possible to make doughnuts healthy? I’m skeptical about that.
Best matcha recipe I have tried! I made a double batch and they disappeared!
I tried these and they took way too long to bake. I think I overcooked them. Oops!
Meh. They taste okay but my kids didn’t enjoy them at all. I think they just want chocolate.
These doughnuts are a revelation! I love matcha and these hit the spot. So soft and fluffy!
I was really skeptical about matcha in doughnuts, but these were surprisingly good. Didn’t expect that green color though.
I was also surprised how good they taste! That green color is just part of the experience, I guess. Love matcha now!
Just ok, I prefer regular sugar doughnuts. Not everyone likes matcha!
