Ultra-Creamy Mashed Potatoes

March 20, 2024

Ultra-Creamy Mashed Potatoes are the epitome of comfort food, taking a simple, classic dish to new heights. Whether served at a holiday gathering, family dinner, or alongside a weeknight meal, these mashed potatoes deliver a rich, velvety texture and a flavor that will have everyone coming back for seconds.

The secret to making mashed potatoes ultra-creamy is in the technique and the ingredients. Start with the right type of potato – Yukon Golds or russets are ideal for their starchy texture that breaks down easily. Boiling the potatoes until they are tender is key, but the magic happens when you take the time to warm your butter and cream separately, ensuring they’re fully incorporated without cooling down the potatoes. This creates that perfect creamy consistency that’s not too runny but smooth enough to melt in your mouth.

While butter is a must, adding cream (or even sour cream) makes all the difference. The richness of heavy cream adds a luxurious texture, and the subtle tang from sour cream can give the mashed potatoes a slight depth of flavor. For an extra touch of indulgence, consider mixing in a bit of cream cheese for that velvety, decadent feel that makes each bite feel like a little moment of joy.

Seasoning is essential, too. Salt and pepper are the basics, but adding a touch of garlic powder, fresh chives, or even a sprinkle of Parmesan can elevate the dish and add layers of flavor. You can also use roasted garlic or herbs like rosemary for a savory twist. Don’t forget the key step of mashing—use a potato masher or, for the creamiest result, a potato ricer. This ensures the potatoes are fluffy and light, not dense or lumpy.

Ultra-creamy mashed potatoes make a fantastic side dish for virtually any main course. Whether paired with roasted chicken, steak, or even a holiday roast, they’ll quickly become a favorite. The best part? Leftovers make an incredible topping for shepherd’s pie or a delicious snack when reheated with a little extra butter.

I love potatoes, but I am more into fries. Still, these were not bad.

  2. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    3 stars
I followed it but I think I overcooked the potatoes—then they were kind of watery when I drained. The taste was still okay though, just not as dreamy.

    1. User avatar Quickbeam says:

      3 stars
I dunno, 15-20 min is fine. Maybe your potatoes were just “watery” kind. Also did you boil with the lid on? Mine always comes out dreamy when I mash fast and add more butter 😅

    2. User avatar krystyna.schneider says:

      4 stars
Ahh yeah, that sounds like an overcook + drainage issue. If they got watery, you might’ve let them go a bit too long or didn’t steam off the extra water after draining. Next time, drain and return to the warm pot for a minute or two before adding the cream.

  3. User avatar andrew.purdy says:

    4 stars
These tasted way better than I thought they would. Easy too! I’ll make them for Thanksgiving!

    1. User avatar reita.ferry1964 says:

      5 stars
I’m glad to hear that! They are a family favorite at my Thanksgiving too. So creamy!

  4. User avatar Humma Kavula says:

Mashed potatoes should not be that creamy. Where’s the chunkiness? This is just wrong!

    1. User avatar ashanti.dietrich says:

      2 stars
Not everyone likes em creamy. Chunky is how I remember my grandma made it. This recipe ain’t for me.

    2. User avatar Hoyt Mueller says:

      4 stars
I totally disagree! Creamy mashed potatoes are the best! Chunky ones just feel outdated.

  5. User avatar robby.kuhn84 says:

I tried this and they turned out gluey. Maybe I over-mashed or used the wrong potato type. Next time I’ll try Yukon Gold.

    1. User avatar Arthur Dent says:

      5 stars
Ahh yeah, gluey mashed potatoes usually means they were over-mashed or you used a starchier potato. Yukon Gold is a great next try—also make sure you mash just until smooth and don’t keep whipping it for too long after adding dairy.

  6. User avatar gina.lang41 says:

    2 stars
I tried it but my potatoes turned kinda gluey? I guess I over-mashed or cooked them too soft. Still edible though.

    1. User avatar Cammar Pilru says:

      5 stars
Yeah, that sounds like you might have pushed the mashing too far or let them go a bit too soft—starchy potatoes can turn gluey if they’re overcooked/overmixed. Next time, cook just until fork-tender, drain well, then mash gently (or use a ricer) and mix in the cream/butter/sour cream right after draining while they’re hot.

  7. User avatar asia.greenfelder97 says:

    4 stars
Really easy to make! But I think adding garlic would make them even better. But still good as is. 4 stars!

  8. User avatar suzanne.wuckert81 says:

    2 stars
I tried this and it turned gummy? I think I overcooked and didn’t drain long enough. Still edible, but not the fluffy kind.

  9. User avatar salley.tromp says:

    4 stars
I followed it pretty much exactly, but I think my potatoes were older because it needed a little extra mashing time. Still came out good though, and the flavor is solid.

  10. User avatar stuart.stamm says:

    1 star
Disgusting! How can anyone eat potatoes like that? They should be simple, not piled with cream! 1 star.

    1. User avatar hollis.koch35 says:

      5 stars
I love creamy mashed potatoes! They’re a great comfort food, though I get why some people might think it’s too much. But hey, the cream is what makes them ultra-creamy! 😋

  11. 2 stars
2nd time i made it my potatoes was salty?? i dont know what happened. maybe i over did the salt. still ate it lol.

    1. User avatar Tracee Heathcote says:

      5 stars
Oof, salty potatoes is the worst—especially when you’re sure it should be right. Since the recipe says “salt and pepper to taste” and uses 5 lb potatoes, the best fix is to add salt gradually (like 1/2 tsp at a time) after mashing, and mix really well between additions. Also, were you using any “salted” butter or saltier sour cream/cream? That could push it over.

  12. 5 stars
These mashed potatoes are amazing! So creamy and buttery, I can’t stop eating them! 😍

  13. User avatar Mr. Lloyd Swift says:

    2 stars
I tried this recipe and it was way too rich for my taste. Maybe use less butter next time?

  14. 5 stars
My kids loved em! Messy, but who cares when they’re happy! 🍽️

    1. 5 stars
Happy kids = happy mom! I always say that! Messy food is the best. 😄

    2. User avatar wade.stark2014 says:

      3 stars
But can mashed potatoes really be THAT messy? Seems odd. 🤔

  15. User avatar Vladimir Harkonnen says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but my mom makes better mashed potatoes. These were just too creamy for my liking. 👎

    1. 4 stars
I feel you! Everyone has their own style. Maybe you just prefer a different balance of creaminess? Still, these are a hit with my family. 😋

  16. User avatar agustin.crist5 says:

    5 stars
These were insanely creamy—like restaurant mashed potatoes. I used warmed cream and butter and it made the texture even silkier.

  17. User avatar Michael83 says:

    5 stars
I added garlic to mine, and they turned out amaziiing!!! Will make again for Thanksgiving.

  18. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly but my mashed potatoes came out a bit gluey. I might’ve over-mashed or used too hot cream? Next time I’ll warm the dairy first.

    1. 4 stars
That sounds frustrating—gluey mash is usually from over-mashing (or whipping too long). Next time maybe mash just until smooth, and also let the potatoes steam off a minute after draining.

    2. User avatar jess.mosciski14 says:

      5 stars
Hmm I think warming the cream helps, but gluey could also be the potatoes were cooked too long and got starchy. I’d boil till fork-tender only. Also don’t use a mixer unless you want gum vibes 😅

  19. User avatar becky.hermiston says:

    5 stars
Mashed potatoes? More like mashed clouds! So fluffy and creamy! Love it.

  20. User avatar kareen.schamberger says:

    3 stars
I don’t get why people rave about these. They were okay, but I’ve had better.

  21. User avatar stephania.shields31 says:

    4 stars
Just a suggestion, if you add garlic powder, it really boosts the flavor. Trust me!

  22. User avatar tereasa.crooks81 says:

    2 stars
Why do you need heavy cream and sour cream? Seems like overkill. Just use milk like my mom did. :/

  23. User avatar marquitta.satterfield says:

    3 stars
Why sour cream? Never heard of that in mashed potatoes…I might try them without it. 3 stars for the idea.

  24. User avatar rex.quigley37 says:

    3 stars
They tasted bland without seasoning. I added garlic powder and salt, turned out fine.

  25. User avatar laverne.hoppe says:

    5 stars
These turned out unbelievably creamy—like diner-quality. I used Yukon Gold and it made a difference. Definitely worth the extra sour cream step.

  26. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    4 stars
Isn’t sour cream bad for you? I heard it can make you gain weight. But I want to try this anyway.

    1. User avatar florrie.daniel says:

      4 stars
Sour cream isn’t bad in moderation! Just enjoy your potatoes! 🍽️

  27. User avatar Bo D. Satva says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but 5 pounds is a lot for my small family. I halved everything and it still tasted rich—like restaurant potatoes. Thanks!

  28. User avatar Flame Atronach says:

    5 stars
Yum! My husband said he could eat these every day! 🔥

  29. User avatar Margot Fenring says:

    2 stars
1/4 cup sour cream?? That seems like not enough for the name “ultra-creamY.” I added extra and it was way better. Recipe’s okay but don’t trust the title.

  30. User avatar Refugio Lindgren says:

    5 stars
This is basically instant upgrade mashed potatoes—heavy cream + sour cream does wonders. Would recommend for Thanksgiving.

  31. 4 stars
Pretty good! I was worried about the amount of dairy, but the sour cream really helps the tang. Next time I’ll warm the cream first so it mixes even easier.

  32. User avatar jaleesa.ritchie says:

    2 stars
Is sour cream necessary? Seemed odd to me. Just wondering.

  33. User avatar leland.zieme97 says:

    2 stars
No offense, but mine turned out a bit dry. I guess I should’ve added more cream or butter. 🤷‍♂️

  34. User avatar asha.ullrich37 says:

    4 stars
The cook time surprised me. Mine took closer to 30 minutes to be tender, but that’s probably on my stove. Once cooked, it was great.

  35. User avatar junior.graham93 says:

    4 stars
Honestly, I was skeptical about using that much cream and butter, but WOW! Best mashed potatoes ever!

  36. 5 stars
These mashed potatoes are absolutely heavenly! I couldn’t stop eating them. I followed the recipe exactly. 5 stars!

  37. User avatar dirk.bechtelar76 says:

    5 stars
I added some cheese, hehehe. The best!

  38. User avatar lindsay.grant2015 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, 5 pounds is a lot. I halved it and it came out great, but 20 minutes was a little long for my chunks—check tenderness instead of the clock.

  39. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    4 stars
So rich! I feel like I gained 5 lbs just looking at them! 😂

    1. 5 stars
Haha, right? But it’s totally worth it! Mashed potatoes are life! 😍

    2. User avatar kevin.effertz2017 says:

      2 stars
I dunno, seems like a lot of butter and cream… isn’t that unhealthy?

  40. 2 stars
    potatooooooes udggrhh!

  41. User avatar exie.damore33 says:

    5 stars
I just added garlic to mine and it made a huge difference! Don’t skip the sour cream, it’s a game changer!

  42. User avatar belle.oconner1979 says:

    2 stars
Too much cream! It was super greasy and kinda gross. I prefer my mashed potatoes without all the extra stuff. 2 stars.

  43. User avatar raymon.rohan99 says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have butter so I used olive oil…wasn’t the same but still tasty! Next time I’ll try it as written! 4 stars.

    1. User avatar audrea.heathcote67 says:

      4 stars
Olive oil can give it a different flavor, but I’m glad you still liked it! Maybe try some garlic with the oil next time for a twist!

    2. User avatar alphonse.rath says:

      3 stars
Butter is kinda the whole point of creamy potatoes, lol. Bet they were still good, though! Let me know how it goes when you try the original recipe!

  44. User avatar Mayor Hagen says:

    4 stars
Took me a bit to get the hang of mashing them right, but they turned out really good. Would recommend!

  45. 5 stars
These are the best mashed potatoes I’ve ever made, no joke. I added a tiny bit of garlic like my grandma taught me and wow.

  46. User avatar zula.damore24 says:

    5 stars
These mashed potatoes are heaven! So creamy and rich, my family loved them!

  47. User avatar vance.schoen2007 says:

    3 stars
I don’t usually measure—so I eyeballed everything and it turned out kinda salty. The idea is good, just be careful with the seasoning at the end.

  48. User avatar julietta.reichel1993 says:

    4 stars
SO creamy! But I think y’all forgot to mention the calories… 😅

  49. User avatar prairie dog says:

    5 stars
These were unbelievably creamy—exactly what I wanted for Thanksgiving. I used russet potatoes and didn’t even need more pepper at the end. Great recipe!

  50. 2 stars
Where’s the garlic? Mashed potatoes without garlic feel kinda sad. I know it’s not in the recipe but still—this needs flavor.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—garlic would take these from “fine” to amazing. Even a couple cloves (roasted or sautéed) mixed in while mashing would add a ton of depth. 🧄

    2. User avatar Ms. Clotilde Kreiger says:

      4 stars
Maybe the sour cream/butter covers it? But yeah, no garlic is kinda weird for mashed potatoes… i woulda added at least some minced garlic. 😅

  51. User avatar mickey.kilback23 says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly, but mine tasted a bit bland even after seasoning. I think my salt was under-salted? Still, the mash was super smooth.

  52. User avatar miguel.murazik69 says:

    5 stars
Simple and comforting. Even my picky cousin ate seconds, so yeah, it works.

  53. User avatar brittaney.mckenzie says:

    5 stars
YUM!!! I can eat this every day. Best mashed potatoes ever!

    1. User avatar shawn.goldner81 says:

      5 stars
Absolutely agree! These mashed potatoes are heavenly! I can’t wait to try this recipe tonight!

    2. User avatar jenae.pouros61 says:

      2 stars
But do they really taste that good? I mean, they’re just potatoes, right?

  54. User avatar lachelle.powlowski26 says:

    1 star
5 pounds of potatoes and 1 cup cream feels like overkill. Also, is “mash until smooth” enough? I like mine with chunks, not baby food.

    1. User avatar brittaney.cronin56 says:

      4 stars
If you’re aiming for chunky, I’d say mash less—like just until the big lumps are gone. 1 cup cream isn’t crazy with 5 lb, especially if they’re meant to be super rich.

  55. User avatar Piter De Vries says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly, but mine ended up a little gluey. Next time I’ll mash less and warm the dairy first. Not bad, just not perfect.

  56. User avatar Jacquelyne Homenick says:

    3 stars
I don’t get why people rave about mashed potatoes. They’re just… potatoes. But these were pretty good, I guess.

    1. 4 stars
I used to think mashed potatoes were boring too, but after trying this recipe, I get it now! Sometimes it’s all about how you make them.

  57. User avatar charmain.graham29 says:

    4 stars
Solid recipe but I think 15–20 min is optimistic for bigger chunks. Mine took closer to 25. Still worth it though—tastes rich and buttery.

  58. User avatar sherril.spencer74 says:

    4 stars
My blender broke so I mashed with a hand masher… still turned out nice and fluffy. Maybe not ultra-smooth, but super tasty.

  59. User avatar patricia.stanton80 says:

    4 stars
Not sure about the sour cream amount… 1/4 cup feels small for 5 pounds. I ended up doubling and it was perfect.

  60. User avatar jeane.dickinson33 says:

    4 stars
Potato good, good good. Easy. 👍

  61. User avatar wellRespected says:

    4 stars
I followed it mostly, but 5 pounds is a LOT. Also I accidentally added extra sour cream and it was tangier than expected—still good though.

    1. User avatar Paulita Pagac says:

      5 stars
Yeah 5 pounds is definitely “party portion” vibes 😂 I do think extra sour cream would make them tangier, but if they still turned out good then you nailed the important part.

    2. User avatar lorraine.zieme29 says:

      3 stars
5 pounds ain’t too much—what surprised me more is the sour cream amount. I usually only do like 1-2 tbsp or it gets weird. But if yours were still good, I guess it worked out anyway… lol.

  62. User avatar kyle.collins1960 says:

    2 stars
I messed up and put in too much butter, ended up like soup. 😭

  63. User avatar derrick.osinski6 says:

    5 stars
These mashed potatoes are to die for! I added garlic and they were even better! A must-try!

    1. 2 stars
I dunno, I usually just use butter and regular milk. Garlic sounds weird for potatoes.

    2. User avatar emely.macejkovic4 says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! Garlic in mashed potatoes is a game changer. Thanks for the tip!

  64. User avatar Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz says:

    3 stars
I tryed this recipe, but it turned out too salty for my taste. Maybe I added too much salt? Not sure.

  65. User avatar Shaddam Corrino IV says:

    3 stars
My mash got a little gluey. I think I overworked it after adding the dairy. Still tasty, just not as fluffy as I wanted.

    1. User avatar fritz.senger1982 says:

      3 stars
Maybe you cooked the potatoes too long? If they’re overdone they can get weird. Also don’t dump cold dairy in—like let it be warm. But hey “still tasty” is a win. Mine once turned gummy and I just added more butter + a splash of hot cream and it was fine.

    2. User avatar hans.prosacco60 says:

      4 stars
Ugh, I’ve done that too 😅 Overmashing after adding dairy can make them go pasty/gluey. Next time, stop mashing once they’re just smooth—if they need loosening, warm the cream/butter first and mash gently or use a ricer. Still sounds like you nailed flavor, though!

  66. User avatar Aurelion Sol says:

    1 star
Horrible! The recipe did not say anything about overcooking the potatoes! Mine were mushy.

    1. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

      3 stars
Maybe you left them on too long? It says to cook till tender, not mushy. Just a thought!

  67. 5 stars
These mashed potatoes are incredible! So creamy and delicious, my whole family loved them! Five stars!

  68. User avatar Hotblack Desiato says:

    5 stars
These turned out ridiculously creamy—like restaurant level. I used Yukon Gold and they stayed super smooth without lumps. Great comfort food.

    1. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

      5 stars
Yes!! I made these last night and they were *so* creamy my picky kid asked for seconds. I also used Yukon Gold and agree—no lumps at all. This is definitely a keeper.

    2. User avatar mauricio.barton says:

      3 stars
Hmm, sounds good but 5 pounds is a lot of potatoes 😅 Also I used Russets once and they got kinda gluey… do you think the trick is the type of potato or mashing longer?

  69. User avatar felix.prosacco53 says:

    1 star
    Yeah it’s fine.

  70. User avatar Ivana Kozey II says:

    2 stars
Not sure about using *both* heavy cream and sour cream—seems like it would overpower the potato taste. It’s still edible, just not my favorite.

    1. 4 stars
Totally get that—heavy cream + sour cream can feel like a lot. I think the key is that the sour cream is a smaller amount (1/4 cup), so it mostly adds tang rather than drowning out the potatoes. If you want it more “potato-forward,” I’d try using just cream + butter or swap the sour cream for a little more butter/cream.

  71. 5 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about the sour cream, but it actually makes them tangy in a good way. Texture was creamy without being gluey.

  72. 5 stars
Made these for Sunday dinner and they were ridiculously creamy. I used Yukon Gold and it mashed super smooth—no lumps at all. Heavy cream + sour cream is the power combo.

  73. User avatar dolores.bogan says:

    5 stars
These mashed potatoes are AMAZING! So creamy and delicious. Will definitely make again!

  74. User avatar matha.sporer1991 says:

    5 stars
Made these for Thanksgiving and they turned out super silky—no lumps at all. I used more pepper than the recipe and it was perfect. Will definitely make again.

  75. User avatar carmine.kuhlman57 says:

    4 stars
Creamy yes, but why so many steps? I usually just boil, drain, and toss in butter. This one feels fancy though, so I guess it works.

    1. 3 stars
Ngl I don’t follow all that. I just boil till soft, then add butter and cream right in. Sour cream sounds fancy but I bet it’s fine to skip. Steps are kinda much though lol.

    2. 5 stars
Totally get it—boil, drain, butter is the classic. The extra steps here are mostly just to keep the texture super consistent (big chunks + mash right in the pot). It’s less “fancy” and more “less lumpy.”

  76. User avatar Bonita Hyatt says:

    5 stars
Followed the recipe and came out perfect! My family loved them. Thanks for sharing!

  77. User avatar jarrod.mcglynn says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid, but I’d suggest warming the cream/butter first so they blend faster. Mine took a bit longer to get fully smooth.

  78. User avatar carlo.metz52 says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, 5 pounds is a lot. I only had 3 pounds and guessed the ratios. It was fine but a bit too rich for my taste—next time I’ll cut the cream/butter.

  79. 5 stars
Yum! Potatoes are da best! Love when they are creamy!! 5/5 👍

  80. User avatar susann.ernser87 says:

    5 stars
So creamy! I used Yukon Gold and they turned out ridiculously smooth. The sour cream really helps the texture—definitely making this again for holidays.

  81. User avatar earl.lehner64 says:

Love it! I’m not even kidding, the texture was silky. Also easy weeknight side—just one pot, so less cleanup.

Meh… pretty basic. Mashed potatoes are mashed potatoes, ya know? Mine tasted a bit bland even with salt/pepper. Next time I’ll add garlic.

This recipe is too complicated. Just boil potatoes and smash em, no need for all this fancy stuff. Not a fan, 1 star.

Good recipe, but I think 15-20 minutes depends a lot on how big the chunks are. Mine took closer to 25. Still turned out great though—seasoning was easy.

Good idea but 15-20 is kinda optimistic 😅 i always boil longer. Also i used less cream and it still tasted good. Maybe try adding salt to the water? unsure though

Yep! Those cook times are super chunk-dependent. I went a bit bigger and it was more like 25 mins too. But the end result really is worth it—creaminess is on point.

Totally agree—super easy and they come out so creamy. I did it exactly like the instructions and it was a hit at dinner. Yum!

I tried this but mine was kinda thick, like glue lol. Maybe my potatoes were too starchy? Next time I’ll warm the cream first or add a splash more water.

Too much cream! I thought I was gonna float away with how rich they were. Not for me.

My grandma would approve. Sour cream + heavy cream is the combo. I mashed with a hand mixer and wow—no grit at all.

These came out insanely creamy—like restaurant-style. I used Yukon Gold and didn’t even need much extra seasoning. Will make again for sure.

Really good base recipe. Next time I’m adding some garlic (because why not) and maybe a little more salt at the end.
