Tuna Melt

December 20, 2024

The tuna melt is a beloved comfort food that combines the creamy, savory goodness of tuna salad with the crispy, cheesy delight of a grilled sandwich. It’s a simple yet satisfying dish, often served for lunch or a quick dinner, and its warm, melty cheese paired with the tuna filling is truly irresistible.

To make a classic tuna melt, you start with a tuna salad mixture. Canned tuna, preferably packed in water or oil, is drained and flaked into a bowl. Mayonnaise is the base of the salad, adding creaminess, while a touch of Dijon mustard, lemon juice, salt, and pepper enhance the flavor. You can also throw in finely chopped celery, onion, or pickles for extra crunch and a slight tang. The result is a flavorful tuna salad with just the right balance of creaminess and savory goodness.

Next comes the bread – thick slices of sourdough or whole wheat bread are perfect for this sandwich. The bread is lightly buttered on the outside to achieve that crispy, golden crust when grilled. Once the bread is ready, a generous amount of tuna salad is spread on one slice, followed by a layer of melted cheese. Cheddar, Swiss, or American cheese are classic choices, but feel free to experiment with your favorite melting cheeses. The cheese should be thick enough to melt and drip over the tuna salad as the sandwich grills.

Once assembled, the sandwich is cooked in a hot skillet or on a griddle until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is perfectly melted inside. The result is a deliciously gooey, crispy sandwich with a warm, flavorful filling that hits all the right notes.

Tuna melts are often served with a side of chips, a pickle, or a fresh salad. They’re quick, easy, and perfect for a comforting meal that doesn’t require too much effort. Whether you’re enjoying it on a busy day or making it as a late-night snack, a tuna melt never fails to satisfy.

This is the best tuna melt I’ve ever had! So easy and delicious! 😋

  2. User avatar ferdinand.skiles24 says:

    2 stars
Easy dinner, but I wish the recipe mentioned seasoning the tuna (salt/pepper). Without it I felt it was a bit flat. Still edible though!

  3. User avatar king.christiansen97 says:

This tuna melt is soooo gooood! I added some pickles and it took it to another level! 5 stars!

  4. User avatar janeth.feeney41 says:

Tried this tonight—so quick and actually tastes bright because of the lemon. I used cheddar and it melted perfectly. Will make again!

    1. User avatar shane.yundt says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—lemon juice is such a game changer in tuna. Glad the cheddar worked out too!

    2. 3 stars
Mine tasted kinda weird? I used bottled lemon and maybe that’s why
still not bad though. Next time I’ll squeeze it fresh.

  5. 2 stars
Not gonna lie, I don’t get the mayo + lemon thing. The flavor felt weird to me, like tuna salad but hot
 still edible though.

  6. User avatar Curiosity Shop Guy says:

    4 stars
Loved it. I used sourdough bread instead and it was delish!

    1. User avatar francie.runte58 says:

      3 stars
But is sourdough really a good swap for regular bread? I feel like it might be too tangy for a tuna melt.

    2. 5 stars
I love sourdough too! It adds such a nice flavor. Great choice!

  7. 2 stars
I dunno, something just felt off with my tuna. Maybe my mayo was old? đŸ€š

  8. 4 stars
1 can tuna? Thats expensive now
but it was good i guess. Would recommend.

    1. User avatar Koume and Kotake says:

      4 stars
Totally get you on the tuna prices 😭 Still, this is one of those “worth it” sandwiches when you want something quick and filling.

  9. User avatar lesley.kirlin says:

    1 star
Why would I waste my time on this? Just get a can of tuna and eat it plain, way easier.

    1. User avatar charley.schmitt says:

      5 stars
But this is way better than plain tuna! You get melty cheese and crispy bread, what’s not to love?

  10. 4 stars
Tuna melts are my jam! But what’s with lemon juice? I never added that before, unique!

  11. User avatar Li Shenlong says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but I think the mayo + tuna is a bit thick. Next time I’ll add a tiny splash more lemon or maybe a spoon of pickle relish for some tang.

  12. User avatar rhonda.schoen68 says:

    4 stars
Solid basic tuna melt. I was skeptical about the lemon juice but it makes a difference. Next time I’ll add some pepper and maybe a tiny pinch of garlic powder.

  13. User avatar corey.lockman says:

    5 stars
Yum!!! My kids gobbled it up! They even asked for seconds!

    1. User avatar Reg Nullify says:

      5 stars

    2. User avatar jose.harris88 says:

      2 stars
I don’t know, tuna melts? Seems kinda boring.

  14. 3 stars
Followed the recipe, but my bread burned. Maybe it was my stove? đŸ€·â€â™‚ïž

  15. User avatar tiffaney.graham says:

    4 stars
I followed it exactly, but my tuna mixture was kind of thick. Maybe my mayo brand is thicker? Still tasty though.

    1. User avatar modesto.terry says:

      5 stars
Yeah, thick tuna mixture usually comes down to mayo thickness or how well the tuna was drained. A little extra lemon juice or even 1 tsp mayo + stir can loosen it next time. Glad it was still tasty!

    2. User avatar Arden Hartmann says:

      3 stars
Mine did that once—thought I messed up, but it turned out fine. I think if the tuna’s not fully drained it can be weirdly thick or pasty. Also, medium heat might make it feel thicker? Next time try cooking a minute less so it doesn’t get too dry.

  16. 5 stars
Y’all, this is the best tuna melt I ever made. Cheese melted just right!

  17. User avatar Trey Greenholt Sr. says:

    4 stars
Super easy. I had to add a little extra mayo because my tuna was drier than expected, but still turned out great.

    1. User avatar fredrick.douglas85 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—tuna can be so dry depending on the brand. That extra mayo trick usually saves the texture.

  18. User avatar Estelle Hertz says:

    5 stars
This is so easy and delicious! My family loved it!

  19. User avatar melaine.boyle15 says:

    1 star
Tuna? On bread? That’s a big no for me. Stick to PB&J.

  20. User avatar ollie.kunze44 says:

    5 stars
Made this for lunch today—simple and honestly super satisfying. The lemon really brightens the tuna. Mine browned a tiny bit too fast on the first side, so I’d keep an eye on medium heat.

  21. User avatar Sandy Banks says:

    4 stars
I used cheddar and it melted great. I think next time I’ll add a little pepper or chopped pickles for crunch, but overall solid.

    1. User avatar lee.altenwerth says:

      5 stars
Nice! Cheddar is definitely the way to go—those melts are so satisfying. Pepper or chopped pickles sounds like a great crunchy twist. 😄

  22. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

    2 stars
I don’t get why people like tuna. It smells weird. Not my fave.

    1. 4 stars
I used to think the same, but once I tried this, it changed my mind! Give it a shot with some spices!

  23. User avatar Wispmother says:

    1 star
Tuna? Really? I thought we were supposed to be eating healthy. Why all the butter?

  24. User avatar Elenwen says:

    2 stars
Honestly, I don’t get why people like tuna melts. The flavor is just…off. Didn’t like it.

    1. User avatar shala.hoeger1960 says:

      4 stars
I totally get what you mean! Tuna melts have such a strange flavor. Not for everyone, for sure.

  25. User avatar nia.hudson28 says:

    4 stars
Tuna in a sandwich? Sounds weird but my kids loved it! Will make again. Quick meal!

  26. User avatar shaunte.gusikowski68 says:

    4 stars
Delicious! I can’t believe how quick it was to make. Tuna and cheese is a winning combo!

  27. User avatar donella.prohaska64 says:

    2 stars
Not gonna lie, I don’t get the hype. Tuna + cheese is okay, but the mayo/lemon ratio felt weird to me. Maybe it needs more onion or celery? I probably won’t repeat it.

    1. User avatar christia.nikolaus says:

      4 stars
Totally fair—mayo + lemon can taste “off” if you go heavy on the lemon. I usually start with 1/2 tsp and adjust. Onion or celery would probably be a great fix too!

    2. 3 stars
I love it exactly how it is 😅 Tuna + cheese is the main thing, lemon is just for zing. Adding onion/celery changes it into something else, but if you want crunch, celery’s not a bad idea.

  28. User avatar arthur.nikolaus2013 says:

    5 stars
This is the best tuna melt I ever had! Super easy and quick! 😊

  29. User avatar Super Saiyan Goku says:

    1 star
This recipe is too simple. I was expectin’ something fancy, not just tuna and bread.

  30. User avatar cami.deckow87 says:

    4 stars
Seriously, just 7 steps? That’s like, the easiest thing I’ve ever made! 😄

    1. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

      5 stars
Right?! It’s so simple! That’s why I love it, quick lunch with no fuss. 😊

    2. User avatar earl.lemke says:

      3 stars
Yeah, but what if you forgot the lemon juice? Then it’s just tuna on bread! 😂

  31. 5 stars
This tuna melt was a hit with my kids! They loved it and so did I. Thanks for sharing!

  32. User avatar marta.kerluke2015 says:

    5 stars
Tried this for lunch—so fast and actually super tasty. The lemon in the tuna makes a difference. Mine got a little too brown on the first side, but 2 minutes helped.

  33. User avatar Dr. Voncile Schneider says:

    3 stars
2-3 minutes per side seems short—my bread was only lightly toasted after that. I needed more like 4 minutes. Maybe my stove runs cool.

  34. User avatar wellRespected says:

    2 stars
My grandma made tuna sandwiches better than this lol. Sorry!

    1. 4 stars
That’s cool! Everybody has their own taste. My mom used to add pickles to hers, which made it special! 😄

  35. User avatar ivelisse.greenholt11 says:

    4 stars
Delicious! Remember to use fresh bread. My mom taught me that! Totally making again!

  36. 3 stars
I followed the recipe exactly and it was okay
just kind of plain. I think it needs more seasoning or maybe chopped pickles/onion for flavor.

    1. User avatar earnest.koch1958 says:

      2 stars
      I dunno
I followed it and it tasted fine to me. Maybe you’re using bland mayo or not enough salt? Also lemon juice is kinda strong so maybe ease up a bit.

    2. User avatar Ms. Damon Muller says:

      4 stars
Yeah I felt the same way—mine was a bit bland too. I added a pinch of garlic powder, black pepper, and a little Dijon and it was way better. Pickles would be awesome!

  37. User avatar Majikthise says:

    4 stars
This is pretty good, but I think 1 tsp lemon is a lot if your tuna is already tangy. Next time I’ll start with 1/2 tsp. Still came out nice and melty.

  38. User avatar Olive Branch says:

    4 stars
This recipe is super easy! I used whole grain bread and a mix of cheeses. Yum!

    1. User avatar sebastian.hirthe8 says:

      4 stars
I wonder how it would taste with other breads? Might try ciabatta next time.

    2. User avatar doretha.gusikowski2006 says:

      5 stars
Whole grain adds a nice touch! Great idea on the cheese mix! đŸ„Ș

  39. User avatar Nell Wintheiser says:

    3 stars
Did anyone else think this needed more spice? I added paprika but still plain.

    1. User avatar shane.graham25 says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! I added cayenne pepper to mine and it was much better. Need that kick! đŸ”„

  40. User avatar Leto Atreides says:

    3 stars
Tuna + cheese? Really?? That’s not normal but I tried it and it’s not bad.

  41. User avatar marina.bradtke1983 says:

    4 stars
Honestly, I think this is a classic. Nothing fancy, but it hits the spot. I’ll probably add mustard next time for extra tang.

  42. 5 stars
This is such a classic comfort food. The lemon juice really brightens up the tuna—mine turned out creamy and not fishy at all. I went with cheddar and it melted perfectly.

    1. User avatar haydee.bogan40 says:

      5 stars
Yes! The lemon is the magic part—makes it taste so much fresher. I’ve done cheddar too and it’s perfect for that melty, creamy vibe.

  43. 3 stars
Mine got a little soggy even though I cooked it the full 3 minutes. Maybe my bread was too soft—still yummy though.

  44. User avatar vicente.quitzon48 says:

    5 stars
This was so good! I added some pickles for extra crunch and it was amazing! 😋

  45. User avatar janine.blanda65 says:

    4 stars
Love tuna melts, but I’m not convinced about cheddar vs American—American melts easier, cheddar has that sharper taste. I used cheddar anyway and it was good though.

  46. User avatar mose.wyman46 says:

    3 stars
It came out okay, but mine got a bit too brown before the cheese fully melted. I think my heat was too high.

  47. 3 stars
I followed it exactly and it turned out… okay? The tuna mixture was a little dry (maybe my tuna was too drained). Could use a touch more mayo, I think.

    1. User avatar cassidy.kreiger says:

      5 stars
This is totally reasonable—tuna can vary a lot by how “dry” it is. If it needs a little more mayo, I’d just add 1 tsp at a time until it looks like a spreadable paste.

  48. User avatar rosie.white56 says:

    2 stars
Not convinced—tuna sandwiches always smell weird to me. Also 2–3 minutes per side felt too short; my skillet runs hot. Still ate it, just not my favorite.

  49. User avatar bert.little62 says:

    1 star
Tuna melt? More like tuna blah! No offense but I don’t see the hype.

  50. 2 stars
Not gonna lie, I don’t get the lemon juice—made it kinda tangy for me. If you like bright flavors you’ll be happy.

  51. User avatar lucia.lueilwitz2015 says:

    5 stars
Not gonna lie, I thought it would be bland. But the combo of mayo + lemon + cheese totally works. Also, non-stick skillet is the move.

  52. User avatar milan.considine says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but my bread got more toasted than melted cheese. Next time I’ll lower the heat a bit and cover the pan so the cheese melts sooner.

    1. User avatar cristin.quitzon says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—2–3 minutes per side can be a bit much depending on your stove. Covering it is a great trick to trap the heat so the cheese melts instead of just browning the bread.

  53. User avatar florine.green says:

    3 stars
I followed the recipe but mine turned out soggy. Maybe I added too much mayo? I might try again tho.

  54. User avatar edgardo.huels says:

    2 stars
I don’t get why people love tuna melts. It’s just tuna and cheese on bread, how is that special?? It’s kinda basic.

    1. User avatar lia.pfannerstill2021 says:

      5 stars
Nah, tuna melts are the best! You just don’t appreciate the combo of flavors. Plus, you can add stuff like pickles or onions to make it even better.

    2. 4 stars
I totally get what you mean! It sounds simple, but when you add that crispy bread and gooey cheese, it just hits different. Maybe give it another try!

  55. 2 stars
I think there are too many calories in this. Could be healthier with different ingredients.

    1. User avatar Chi Shenlong says:

      4 stars
I don’t think it’s that bad! You can always use whole grain bread and less mayo to make it healthier.

  56. User avatar simonne.howe96 says:

    2 stars
Not gonna lie, 2-3 minutes per side felt like too long on my stove. I burned the butter a tiny bit.

  57. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    5 stars
Delicious! I used American cheese and the melt was super smooth. Also love that it’s all pantry stuff—no fancy ingredients needed.

  58. User avatar douglas.kuphal says:

    4 stars
Very quick and easy! Made it in less than 10 minutes. Good meal for busy nights!

  59. User avatar bradford.oconnell77 says:

    3 stars
I don’t know about the lemon juice. It tastes kinda weird with tuna to me, but my partner liked it, so maybe it’s just personal.

  60. User avatar Carlyn Champlin says:

    3 stars
Simple and easy. But I feel like it needs something more, maybe some pickles or onions?

  61. User avatar alva.casper says:

    4 stars
i did it but i didnt have lemon so i used lime juice.. still taste good tho lol. bread got golden and cheese melted. would do again

  62. User avatar laurine.ortiz60 says:

    2 stars
Why lemon though? I tried it and it tasted weird. I’ll stick to just mayo next time.

  63. User avatar francene.lynch21 says:

    4 stars
I’m not usually a tuna person, but this was surprisingly comforting. Next time I’ll use pepper and maybe some pickles.

  64. 3 stars
The lemon juice flavor was a little strong for me. I’d do half the amount next time.

    1. User avatar morgan.turner says:

      5 stars
Totally get that—lemon juice can be punchy. Half next time sounds like a great tweak, especially if you like the tuna more classic.

  65. User avatar brigida.harvey says:

    5 stars
Easy and fast, like 10 minutes and you’re eating. I added a little black pepper (because why not) and it made it even better. Will make again.

  66. User avatar izetta.murray17 says:

    4 stars
The tuna mixture was a little too mayo-heavy for me. I might cut it to 1.5 tbsp next time, but overall it was tasty and not soggy.

    1. User avatar fredrick.schmidt31 says:

      3 stars
Hm I feel like mayo is kinda the point 😅 But if it was soggy for you maybe your tuna was extra wet or the bread was too soft?

    2. User avatar otelia.gorczany90 says:

      5 stars
Good call on tweaking it—mayo can definitely run a little heavy in tuna melts. I usually start with 1–1.5 tbsp too.

  67. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    5 stars
I added chopped celery and a bit of pepper because why not. It tasted like a diner sandwich. 10/10 would make again.

  68. User avatar wellRespected says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly and it was
fine? The tuna mix tasted a little plain until I added hot sauce. Also my cheese didn’t melt as fast as expected even though my pan was medium heat.

  69. User avatar jason.labadie says:

    5 stars
YUM! I subbed the cheddar for swiss cheese, amazing difference! 😍

    1. User avatar alex.ryan says:

      5 stars
Swiss cheese sounds like a fun twist! I’ll have to try that. Thanks for the idea! đŸ€—

  70. User avatar catheryn.kuphal15 says:

    3 stars
Mine came out a little dry (maybe my tuna was too drained?). I also think I left it a minute too long because the bread got darker than golden brown.
