Gruyere Potato Gratin

May 7, 2026

Gruyere Potato Gratin is the ultimate comfort food, combining thinly sliced potatoes with creamy sauce and rich, nutty Gruyere cheese. Baked until golden and bubbling, this classic dish delivers layers of flavor and texture that make it perfect for holiday gatherings, family dinners, or elegant special occasions.

The beauty of potato gratin lies in its simplicity. Potatoes are sliced thinly so they cook evenly and absorb the creamy mixture while still holding their shape. As the dish bakes, the layers soften and become tender, creating a rich and satisfying texture in every bite.

Gruyere cheese is what gives this gratin its signature flavor. Known for its slightly nutty and savory taste, Gruyere melts beautifully into the cream, creating a silky, luxurious sauce that coats the potatoes perfectly. The top layer turns golden and slightly crisp in the oven, adding a delicious contrast to the creamy interior.

Garlic, butter, and a touch of seasoning enhance the overall flavor without overpowering the natural richness of the cheese and potatoes. Some versions also include herbs like thyme or rosemary for extra depth and aroma, giving the dish a warm, rustic feel.

One of the reasons Gruyere Potato Gratin remains so popular is its versatility. It pairs beautifully with roasted meats, grilled bbq chicken, or simple vegetable dishes, making it suitable for both casual meals and formal dinners. Despite its elegant appearance, it’s surprisingly approachable and can be prepared ahead of time, which makes entertaining easier.

The dish is especially comforting during colder months, when warm, creamy meals become especially appealing. Each spoonful offers a balance of soft potatoes, melted cheese, and rich creaminess that feels indulgent and satisfying.

Gruyere Potato Gratin is more than just a side dish, it’s a centerpiece of comfort and flavor. Whether served at a festive holiday table or as part of a cozy weekend dinner, it brings warmth, richness, and timeless appeal to every meal.

Potatoes and cheese? Yum! This is a keeper! But, like, I think my Grandma uses cheddar instead of gruyere? Same diff? 😂

    1. User avatar stefan.lueilwitz86 says:

      4 stars
I think cheddar is a bit sharper, right? But hey, as long as it’s cheesy and delicious, who cares? 😄

  2. User avatar jerry.okon80 says:

I followed the recipe to the letter but it came out a bit mushy. What did I do wrong? 😕 Maybe I sliced the potatoes too thin.

  3. User avatar gearldine.block57 says:

    2 stars
Didn’t work out for me. My potatoes were still hard after all that baking. Not sure if I did something wrong…

  4. User avatar renay.beier11 says:

    5 stars
Easiest recipe ever! I threw everything in and it came out yum. Will try with different cheeses next time. 😋

WOW! This is the best comfort food ever! I served it at a dinner party, and everyone was raving about it! Can’t wait to make it again!

  6. 2 stars
Eh, it was okay. A bit too rich for my taste. Maybe should’ve used less cream? Anyway, I won’t be making it again. 2/5.

  7. User avatar maria.wisoky says:

This dish is absolutely divine! The cheese, oh my gosh! I added some herbs from my garden too, made it even better. Definitely 5 stars! 🌟

Made this tonight—so creamy and cheesy! I used a little extra gruyère and it came out perfectly golden.

  9. User avatar fredric.kuhic1987 says:

    3 stars
I followed the recipe exactly, but mine didn’t brown as much as I expected. Maybe my oven runs cool? Still tasted good though.

  10. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

    4 stars
Solid recipe but my potatoes needed longer—maybe my slices were thicker. Next time I’ll slice thinner or add 10 extra minutes covered. Flavor was great though.

  11. User avatar charmaine.mcclure2004 says:

Super easy and cozy. I added a pinch of nutmeg because I can’t help myself lol. Would def make again.

    1. User avatar ArabianNights says:

      5 stars
Love this! Nutmeg sounds perfect with gruyere—adds that cozy vibe. I’ve made gratin before, but this step-by-step makes it feel way less intimidating. Gonna try it again with a pinch of nutmeg too 😄

  12. User avatar leonila.watsica says:

    3 stars
Honestly? Too cheesy for me. The texture was good, but I felt it was more “cheese casserole” than fancy gratin. I’d cut the gruyere next time or mix with something milder.

    1. User avatar pandora.hodkiewicz2007 says:

      5 stars
I get what you mean—Gruyère can totally dominate. Next time I’d do half gruyère + half something milder (like cheddar or even a little Swiss) and see if it hits “gratin” instead of “casserole.”

    2. 3 stars
Mmmm I kinda disagree 😅. Gruyere is supposed to be strong though. Maybe your slices were too thick? Mine came out more fancy—like the top got all bubbly and creamy. Still, cutting it with milder cheese is a good idea if you don’t want that punch.

  13. User avatar carlton.watsica59 says:

    3 stars
It was ok, but I feel like I might need more salt. Also, the potatoes took longer than 1 hour to cook for me.

    1. User avatar shanda.hodkiewicz35 says:

      4 stars
Yeah, definitely needs more salt! I think a bit of seasoning goes a long way with these kinds of dishes. And I find potatoes can take forever sometimes! 😂

  14. User avatar Sherman Wadd Evver says:

    4 stars
Absolutely delicious! I added some herbs for a twist and it was yummy!

  15. User avatar joette.hill says:

    3 stars
What’s gruyere cheese? Can I use cheddar? 🤷‍♂️

  16. User avatar russell.kuvalis55 says:

    2 stars
I dunno. Seems too fatty with all that cream. Does it really need 2 cups?

  17. 2 stars
I think my oven is broken, like my gratin didn’t brown at all. Help!

    1. 4 stars
Check if your oven is actually set to 375°F. Sometimes, it could be off by a few degrees, which can affect browning.

    2. User avatar leo.hessel67 says:

      3 stars
Maybe you didn’t let it brown long enough? Mine took longer than the timer said.

  18. User avatar richie.kuphal46 says:

    4 stars
Great recipe! Simple and classy! Definitely making this again!

  19. User avatar raymond.murazik says:

Mine came out too greasy and the cheese burnt. Any tips for the next time?

  20. User avatar warner.spencer says:

I’m not a big fan of gruyere. Can I use cheddar instead? Will that change the whole dish?

    1. User avatar Ford Prefect says:

      3 stars
Yeah, you can use cheddar, but it’s gonna be a whole different thing. Just saying!

    2. 4 stars
Cheddar might work but it won’t taste the same. Gruyere has a unique flavor that really makes the dish. Maybe try a mix?

  21. User avatar wilbur.satterfield1999 says:

    4 stars
Gratin??? Sounds fancy! I just call this cheesy potatoes. 😂 But it’s good, I gotta admit.

  22. User avatar Wonko the Sane says:

Perfection! I can’t believe I made this at home! 👏

  23. User avatar agripina.roob82 says:

    1 star
Ewww, not for me. Potatoes and cheese don’t mix well.

  24. 1 star
Whoa, who came up with this? Who needs that many cheese? 🤨 this is too rich for me, I will stick with my mac and cheese.

  25. 5 stars
Made this for dinner last night—so creamy and cheesy. I sliced the potatoes a bit thicker and it still worked, just needed a few extra minutes. Definitely going into my rotation.

    1. User avatar Berry Ankunding IV says:

      5 stars
Love hearing this! I’ve found gruyère gratin is super forgiving too—thicker slices usually just mean a few more minutes. 😄 Thanks for sharing!

  29. User avatar tracy.ankunding33 says:

Made this tonight and it turned out creamy and super flavorful. The garlic in the cream really does it—golden top too! Will definitely make again.

    1. User avatar magaly.bednar says:

      5 stars
Yes!! The garlic in the cream is the secret—glad it came out creamy and flavorful. That golden top is the best part 😄

  30. User avatar meri.hartmann23 says:

    5 stars
Made this for dinner and it came out ridiculously good. The gruyere browns perfectly and the garlic-cream smell is unreal. I let it sit 10 minutes like they said and it actually slices nicer.

  31. User avatar brice.rowe1961 says:

    4 stars
Could I swap Gruyère with cheddar? I know it won’t be the same, but my store never has it. Also, does anyone cover the whole time or just the first half?

  32. User avatar lawrence.kling2022 says:

    5 stars
Gruyère is expensive, but the flavor is worth it. The top got really golden after the foil came off. I served it with a roast chicken and everyone asked for the recipe.

  33. User avatar michelina.towne77 says:

    4 stars
I’m not sure about the “do not boil” part—mine almost bubbled but still turned out okay. Cream reduced a bit and it got very rich. Would make again.

  34. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

    4 stars
I don’t get why everyone raves about potato gratin—like it’s just potatoes and cheese. But yeah… I ate the whole pan. So maybe I get it now lol.

    1. User avatar dulcie.grant53 says:

      5 stars
Totally get you 😅 I used to think “how fancy can potatoes be?” but the creamy garlic + Gruyère makes it basically comfort food magic. Also… respect for eating the whole pan lol.

    2. User avatar Delena Windler I says:

      4 stars
I mean, it IS just potatoes and cheese… but that’s kinda the point 😂 I always add a pinch of nutmeg though. And I accidentally boiled the cream once (oops) and it still turned out—so yeah, you’re not crazy.

  35. User avatar rosa.treutel says:

    2 stars
Idk… 375°F seems low? Mine took way longer than the recipe said. The top browned but the inside was still firm.

  36. User avatar hans.kohler12 says:

    3 stars
The instructions were super easy, but 45 minutes + 15 felt like not enough at my oven temp. I think 375°F is too low (at least for my setup). Overall still edible and comforting.

  37. User avatar alphonse.cummerata2020 says:

    5 stars
5 stars—simple and it tastes like restaurant food. Also the garlic smell is *chef’s kiss*.

  38. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

    2 stars
Too salty for me and I only used a little salt. Also I think 375°F runs hot—browned quicker than I expected, even with foil. Would adjust seasoning and temperature next time.

  39. User avatar Orange Dartwing says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about how long it bakes. 45 + 15 minutes seems short for thin slices in my oven. I had to bake it longer until the potatoes were tender. Otherwise, flavor was good.

    1. User avatar tristan.carroll1979 says:

      5 stars
Totally get it—ovens vary a lot. 45+15 can be optimistic if your slices aren’t super thin or the dish is deeper. Glad you adjusted and they still came out tasty!

  40. User avatar maryalice.hodkiewicz88 says:

    3 stars
The cream step says don’t boil, but I maybe let it simmer too hard—still tasty though. Potatoes held up and cheese was great.

  41. User avatar geoWizard says:

    2 stars
If you’re short on time, don’t bother covering with foil. Mine still browned fast and I skipped step 7-8. Turns out potatoes weren’t tender though, so… learn from me 😅

    1. User avatar opal.spinka2026 says:

      4 stars
Ohhh good catch 😅 I’ve definitely skipped foil before, but I usually just extend the bake time. Do you think your slices were thicker or was the heat just too high? Potatoes can be so stubborn.

  42. 5 stars
Wow. The gruyere flavor is so rich. I used pre-grated cheese once and it didn’t melt as well—fresh grating matters!

  43. User avatar w00d_ch0p says:

    2 stars
Ugh, mine came out watery 😩 I think I accidentally let the cream boil even though it says not to. Lesson learned: watch the pot.

    1. 4 stars
Ugh I’m sorry! 😩 Cream can definitely turn watery if it gets too hot—next time keep it *just* warm and don’t let it simmer. Also, thin slices help the cream absorb instead of pooling. Hope your next batch is perfect!

  44. 4 stars
Pretty tasty, but 2 pounds of potatoes felt like it filled my dish more than expected. Also, I may have over-boiled the cream (oops), and it got a little weird—still edible though. Next time I’ll be more careful.

  45. User avatar pierre.lehner5 says:

    4 stars
My grandma would approve. Simple, classic, and very “French-ish” without being complicated. I used pre-shredded gruyère too, and it still melted nicely. Yummy.

    1. User avatar antonio.sanford says:

      5 stars
So good to hear! I love that “classic French-ish” vibe—nothing fussy, just comforting. Also glad the pre-shredded gruyère worked out for you!

    2. 3 stars
Maybe I’m doing something wrong, but mine didn’t get super tender in 45+15… I think I sliced the potatoes thicker? Still tasted great though—like, cheesy potato soup but in a good way 😂

  46. User avatar Lula Toy II says:

    3 stars
Not sure about “do not boil” — I accidentally simmered it and the gratin wasn’t as smooth. Still delicious, just less luxurious. Would probably follow the instructions closer next time.

  47. User avatar Draugr Death Overlord says:

    3 stars
Honestly 375°F for 60 minutes feels a bit long? But the potatoes were tender, so I guess it’s right. This is a nice side dish for sure.

  48. User avatar velma.raynor81 says:

    4 stars
I’m not a huge gratin person but this was easy and comforting. I sliced the potatoes a little thicker and it still worked, just needed a few extra minutes.

  49. 4 stars
Pretty solid, but I’d slice the potatoes even thinner next time. Mine weren’t super tender at 45+15, so I baked a bit longer.

    1. 5 stars
Good call—mine usually need more time depending on how thin the slices are. I usually go a bit longer after the foil too. Thinner = more tender at the same temp.

  50. 5 stars
I followed it exactly and it tastes like restaurant comfort food. The garlic in the cream is a really nice touch.

  51. User avatar fernande.cummings says:

    2 stars
This was kinda bland for me even with salt/pepper. Next time I’ll add nutmeg or a pinch of cayenne. Cheese helped, but I wanted more punch.

  52. 4 stars
This is good but kinda salty—maybe my gruyère was saltier? Next time I’ll go lighter on the salt and just rely on the cheese.

  53. User avatar talitha.hagenes1965 says:

    5 stars
This is comfort food at its finest 😭 The garlic in the cream is subtle but makes a huge difference. I let it cool about 10 minutes and it sliced perfectly.

  54. User avatar Su Shenlong says:

    2 stars
Ok but… mine turned out kinda watery. I used a bigger dish so maybe it was too shallow? I’ll try reducing the cream next time or using a tighter baking dish.

    1. 5 stars
Totally possible—the wider/shallow dish can make it bake faster and not reduce as much, leaving it looser. I’d also check your potato thickness (even slices help a ton). Reducing the cream a bit or using a deeper/tighter dish should fix it. Next time try letting it go until it’s bubbling around the edges.
