Five-Spice Grilled Beef Salad

August 9, 2023

If you’re in the mood for something a bit different, a Five-Spice Grilled Beef Salad is an excellent choice. This dish combines the smoky, savory goodness of grilled beef with the fragrant, aromatic flavors of Chinese five-spice powder, resulting in a salad that’s bursting with flavor. It’s a perfect mix of textures and tastes, offering a satisfying meal that’s both hearty and refreshing.

The key to this salad’s bold taste is the five-spice seasoning. This classic Chinese blend typically includes star anise, cloves, Chinese cinnamon, Sichuan peppercorns, and fennel seeds. When applied to beef, it creates a fragrant and slightly spicy rub that gives each bite a depth of flavor that’s unlike anything you’d get from your standard salad.

Grilling the beef adds another layer of complexity to the dish. The high heat sears the outside of the meat, locking in the juices and creating a smoky charred flavor that complements the spice blend perfectly. After grilling, the beef is thinly sliced, making it easy to mix into a bed of crisp greens and vegetables.

For the salad base, you can use a variety of fresh vegetables such as mixed greens, cucumbers, and shredded carrots. The freshness of the veggies contrasts beautifully with the richness of the beef. A tangy dressing made from soy sauce, rice vinegar, and a touch of sesame oil ties everything together, providing a light yet flavorful contrast to the spiced meat.

Not only does this Five-Spice Grilled Beef Salad pack a punch in terms of flavor, but it’s also a nutritious choice. The beef offers a great source of protein, while the vegetables provide essential vitamins and fiber. The dressing adds healthy fats from sesame oil, making this a well-rounded meal that will keep you full without feeling heavy.

In short, this Five-Spice Grilled Beef Salad is a delicious and exciting way to elevate your salad game. With its bold flavors, fresh ingredients, and satisfying texture, it’s sure to become a new favorite in your meal rotation.

Eh, it was okay. I expected more kick. Not sure if I’ll make it again.

    1. User avatar tyrell.thompson43 says:

      2 stars
What do you mean kick? Five-spice is not meant to be spicy! It’s more about the flavors. I thought it was delicious!

    2. User avatar allen.dach1988 says:

      4 stars
I totally get you! I thought it would be spicier too. Maybe next time add some chili flakes?

  2. User avatar kristian.effertz says:

    2 stars
I messed up the grilling part and ended up with beef jerky… sad. But the salad was good!

  3. User avatar mirian.auer10 says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but my honey + soy combo got kinda sticky on the grill—maybe my heat was too high. Also cilantro is a lot for me, so I’ll cut it down next time.

    1. User avatar Erwin Haley says:

      4 stars
Yeah that honey + soy combo will absolutely get sticky if the grill runs hot. Next time try medium heat and maybe pat the beef a bit before grilling so excess marinade doesn’t caramelize too fast.

    2. User avatar ian.ward37 says:

      3 stars
I tried it but mine came out kinda sweet and… sticky too lol. Maybe because my soy sauce was “thick”?? Also cilantro is gross to me so I used parsley and it was fine. Not bad recipe though.

  4. User avatar Londa Stiedemann says:

    4 stars
I substituted chicken for the beef because I’m not a big beef fan. It turned out great! 4 stars.

  5. 3 stars
Way too much soy sauce for me. Watch the salt if you’re cooking it!

    1. User avatar leo.zulauf1973 says:

      4 stars
I thought the soy sauce added a great depth of flavor! But I guess not everyone likes it salty. Maybe just reduce it next time!

  6. User avatar zula.kuphal81 says:

Delish! 😋 Can’t wait to tell my friends about this.

    1. User avatar chasidy.williamson29 says:

Looks good but I’m not sure about the five-spice…isn’t that too strong?

    2. User avatar wellRespected says:

      5 stars
So glad you liked it! It’s a hit for my family too! 🥗

  7. 5 stars
This salad is just amazing! The flavors are perfect together.

  8. User avatar carlos.christiansen says:

    3 stars
Why do you need honey in a salad? Seems weird to me. I just skipped it and it was fine. Not bad overall.

    1. 2 stars
I don’t understand why people complicate salads. Just greens and meat is fine! Honey is a weird choice.

    2. 4 stars
Honey adds a nice sweetness that balances the flavors! It helps cut the salty taste from the soy sauce. You might want to try it next time!

  9. 2 stars
Tried it, but the beef was overcooked. Maybe I grilled it too long? Not sure I’d make it again.

    1. 4 stars
Maybe try grilling for less time next time? I cooked mine for just 1-2 min and it was perfect!

    2. User avatar shanelle.mayert95 says:

      3 stars
Overcooked beef? That shouldn’t happen if ya follow the steps! Did you really marinate it well? 🤔

  10. 4 stars
Good recipe, but the peanuts were too much crunch for my kids. They didn’t eat it.

  11. 5 stars
Absolutely loved this recipe! The flavors are just out of this world.

  12. User avatar keith.boehm says:

    1 star
Meh. Seems too complicated for a salad. I prefer just lettuce and ranch dressing.

    1. User avatar avery.ortiz33 says:

      4 stars
But it’s not just a salad! It’s got flavor and protein. Trying new things can be fun! 🌟

    2. User avatar marlon.mueller2006 says:

      3 stars
Idk, doesn’t sound that hard. Just grill the beef and mix it all together? Just try it once!

  13. User avatar sade.casper63 says:

    3 stars
Took me longer than expected to cook the beef. Should’ve used a higher heat!

  14. 4 stars
I substituted chicken for beef and it was still good.

  15. User avatar Draugr Thrall says:

    4 stars
Good recipe but I didn’t have the five-spice, so I used taco seasoning instead. Still turned out nice!

  16. User avatar chauncey.franecki81 says:

    5 stars
This flavor combo is surprisingly legit—five-spice with honey and soy is such a good match. My beef cooked fast on the grill, so I kept a close eye and it came out tender.

  17. User avatar Leto Atreides says:

    2 stars
Meh. Tasty but kinda bland for me. I think it needed more heat (like chili flakes).

  18. User avatar dylan.schumm says:

    3 stars
I’m not sure if five-spice is for me. The taste was a bit too strong.

  19. User avatar Emily Saunders says:

    1 star
Five-spice? Sounds weird, what is that even? Can’t trust this recipe.

    1. User avatar lesley.kulas says:

      3 stars
Lol, I don’t see how spices can be weird. You can skip it if you want, but don’t knock it till you try it!

    2. User avatar troy.koepp30 says:

      5 stars
Five-spice is actually super tasty! It’s a blend of spices used in many Asian dishes. Give it a try before judging!

  20. User avatar Queen Rutela says:

    4 stars
Five-spice on beef salad sounds fancy but easy. I liked that the recipe doesn’t require cooking anything else—just marinate, grill, toss.

  21. 5 stars
5-star if you like beef, which I do. Meat lover here!

  22. User avatar Dan Geruss says:

    4 stars
Yummy! I didn’t have peanuts, so I used sunflower seeds. Still worked!

  23. User avatar marita.erdman39 says:

    3 stars
Meh. I expected more. Felt like I was just eating a regular salad. But whatever, my kids liked it.

  24. 4 stars
I don’t get why it’s called a salad when half of it is basically meat on greens. Still, I would make it again.

  25. User avatar gabrielle.davis says:

    2 stars
I don’t know why you would put peanuts in a salad. Seems odd to me.

  26. User avatar Lunkwill and Fook says:

    2 stars
I tried this recipe but it didn’t turn out the way I thought it would. The five-spice was too strong for my taste. I guess it’s not for everyone.

    1. User avatar rima.vandervort84 says:

      4 stars
I totally get you! Five-spice can be really overpowering. Maybe try less next time? Hope your next dish turns out better!

  27. User avatar ilse.mcclure says:

    4 stars
Five spice + salad greens is weird but in a good way. I added extra cucumbers and it balanced the richness.

  28. User avatar hollie.parker1986 says:

    3 stars
The marinade smells amazing, but my beef ended up a bit too salty. Next time I’ll reduce the soy sauce or marinate for less time.

    1. User avatar tayna.kunze97 says:

      4 stars
Mmm sounds like you nailed the flavor though! Yeah, 2 tbsp soy sauce can be salty depending on the brand—I’d cut it back a bit or add a splash of water/rice vinegar to balance. Marinating shorter can help too.

    2. 5 stars
Mine was salty last time too 😅 I think I left it marinating like 2 hours. Next time I’ll do 10 minutes like the recipe says and maybe use low-sodium soy sauce. Still tastes good, just gotta tweak!

  29. User avatar earl.mcclure1 says:

    4 stars
I accidentally marinated it for like 2 hours and honestly it was even better. Next time I might reduce the honey a touch though.

    1. 3 stars
2 hours better? mine usually comes out tough when i marinate too long lol. Maybe i overcooked the grill. Also i think it need more five-spice, not less honey. But hey if it tasted good!

    2. 5 stars
Ooh that makes sense! I’ve always felt like the honey/sesame oil combo benefits from a longer sit—two hours is probably perfect. I’d start checking around 60–90 mins next time though so it doesn’t get too sweet.

  30. User avatar broderick.wisoky24 says:

    3 stars
I don’t know, my beef got a little tough on the grill. Maybe I left it too long? How do you avoid that?

  31. User avatar rico.haag says:

    3 stars
Gave this a shot. The peanuts are a nice touch. Could use more seasoning, though.

  32. User avatar sean.ward7 says:

    3 stars
I think the sauce was too sweet for my taste. Maybe a little less honey next time?

  33. 1 star
Why would you put all these spices? Just grill the beef and eat it with rice.

  34. 3 stars
I didn’t have five-spice powder, so used taco seasoning. Not the same, but still tasty!

    1. 4 stars
That’s cool! I think using taco seasoning gives it a unique twist. Glad it turned out tasty!

  35. User avatar dominique.macgyver1993 says:

    2 stars
The dressing ratio feels strong—like, too much soy/honey for me. I’d tone down the sesame oil next time.

  36. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    4 stars
Good idea, but my beef took longer than 2–3 minutes per side (thicker slices). Still tasty though—next time I’ll slice a little thinner and double-check doneness. The dressing is the star.

  37. User avatar ghislaine.sanford21 says:

    5 stars
Absolutely delicious! I recommend adding avocado for extra creaminess!

    1. User avatar ervin.gaylord31 says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! Avocado would make it even better! I’m going to try that next time.

  38. User avatar marianela.von says:

    4 stars
So easy to make! I added some extra veggies and it turned out great!

    1. User avatar halflife4 says:

      5 stars
Wow, extra veggies? That’s a smart idea! I’m definitely trying that next time. 😄

  39. User avatar Spider Soldier says:

    4 stars
Nice! I swapped out the salad greens for spinach and it turned out fine. ❤️

  40. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

    4 stars
Grill was medium-high and I still accidentally charred one batch 😅. Still tasted good though, and the rest were perfect.

  41. 5 stars
Delicious. Easy to make and healthy! 👌

    1. User avatar margrett.mann1980 says:

      5 stars
I’m glad you liked it! It’s always nice to find something healthy that tastes great!

    2. 2 stars
Healthy, sure. But beef in a salad? 🤨 Not sure about that combo.

  42. 5 stars
5 stars for sure! This will impress your friends at a BBQ. Just be careful with the grill; it cooks fast!

  43. 5 stars
This salad is amazing! The five-spice really kicks it up a notch! Will definitely make it again.

    1. User avatar mathWizard says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! That five-spice really adds a unique flavor. Can’t wait to try it myself!

  44. User avatar carmella.johns1976 says:

I thought this was supposed to be spicy. Where’s the heat? Disappointing.

    1. User avatar jerri.raynor13 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree! This recipe is a game changer. Can’t wait to impress my friends with it!

  46. 3 stars
Too much honey, I think. Made it too sweet!

  47. 1 star
What’s with the fancy spices? Just salt and pepper is enough for beef, right?

  48. 5 stars
This salad is incredible! The flavors are so well balanced. My family can’t get enough!

    1. User avatar delois.bruen9 says:

      2 stars
It sounds good n all but I dunno about that five-spice thing. What is it even?

    2. User avatar barrie.ondricka1985 says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! This salad has become a weekly favorite in our house too!

  49. User avatar ilona.lubowitz18 says:

    5 stars
Grill time is perfect. 2–3 minutes per side was spot on for thin sirloin. Crunchy salad with the warm beef? Great idea.

    1. User avatar graig.champlin says:

      3 stars
I might’ve messed up, but 2–3 minutes per side felt too long for my thin sirloin—mine got a little chewy. Still tasty though. Maybe I should’ve grilled hotter for less time?

    2. User avatar Zaphod Beeblebrox says:

      5 stars
Yes! We did exactly 2–3 min/side and it came out juicy but not overcooked. The five-spice + honey combo is 🔥.

  50. User avatar lakita.senger74 says:

    3 stars
My peanuts got soggy because I tossed everything together before the beef. Tip: keep toppings separate until serving.

  51. User avatar odilia.runolfsdottir says:

    5 stars
This is a really solid sweet-savory combo. The five-spice on the beef tastes super fragrant—almost restaurant-level.

  52. User avatar leonida.denesik1952 says:

    3 stars
The instructions are nice but I wish it said what temp to grill at. Also, cilantro and peanuts together is a weird combo to me but I tried it. I ended up liking it, kinda.

  53. User avatar ceola.gutmann says:

    2 stars
How can it be grilled and salad at the same time? Sounds weird.

    1. User avatar joe_banana says:

      2 stars
I don’t know, sounds kinda strange. Just cook the beef and eat it separately, right?

    2. User avatar victor.wolff says:

      5 stars
It’s called a grilled salad for a reason! The beef adds flavor to the fresh greens. Give it a try, it’s delicious!

  54. User avatar bell.marvin1974 says:

    4 stars
    Looks easy. Tasty!

  55. User avatar abe.paucek1980 says:

    5 stars
So easy and so good! My kids loved it, will definitely make again.

  56. 3 stars
Good salad, bad grilling technique. Gotta master that grill first. LOL.

  57. 5 stars
Not gonna lie, grilling thin sliced sirloin for only 2-3 min per side scared me. But it worked—still juicy. Great summer dinner.

    1. User avatar karey.spinka98 says:

      5 stars
Same! I was worried 2–3 min would turn it tough, but five-spice + honey kinda “saves” it. Turned out juicy for me too. Great idea for summer—love the salad crunch with the beef.

    2. User avatar rich.landlord says:

      4 stars
I tried this and my slices were still pink after 3 min, so I did like 4 min a side. Still good tho—next time I’ll marinate longer. Also I used regular sesame oil… it was fine lol. Nice flavor overall.

  58. User avatar Falmer Shadowmaster says:

    2 stars
Not gonna lie, I’m skeptical of grilling beef for only 2-3 minutes per side—mine was nearly raw. If you’re using thin slices, sure, but watch it carefully. Flavor is still solid.

  59. User avatar carlton.cummerata84 says:

    2 stars
Is five-spice powder really necessary? I think any seasoning would do. Just grilled beef on a salad, right? 🤷‍♂️

  60. 3 stars
I followed the recipe pretty much exactly, but it tasted a little too sweet for me. Maybe reduce the honey to 1 tbsp? Otherwise the salad crunch is amazing.

    1. User avatar Sahasrahla says:

      4 stars
Totally makes sense—2 tbsp honey can come off pretty sweet depending on the soy/honey brand. I’d try 1 tbsp next time; the five-spice + sesame oil already brings plenty of flavor.

  61. User avatar nicky.cartwright93 says:

    5 stars
The marinade is *so* flavorful—sweet, salty, and that five-spice aroma hits immediately. I served it with extra sesame oil and it was gone fast. Would make again!

  62. User avatar ethelene.marquardt says:

    5 stars
This salad is amazing! The five-spice adds such a unique flavor. 5 stars!

  63. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

    4 stars
This is good, but 1 lb of sirloin was kinda much for my salad bowl. I ended up with extra beef—didn’t mind, but portion-wise I’d double the greens next time.

  64. 5 stars
This is like something I would eat in a fancy restaurant! Loved it!

    1. 5 stars
I agree! This salad looks super fancy! I might try it for a dinner party. Thanks for sharing!

  65. User avatar ernest.upton30 says:

    3 stars
Could’ve used more sauce on the salad. Like I get it’s a marinade, but after tossing greens I felt like it needed a little extra drizzle.

  66. User avatar jarrett.kerluke1954 says:

    3 stars
Not a fan of the honey in the marinade, made it a bit too sweet for my taste.

  67. 1 star
Where’s the dressing? I thought it would be in the recipe. Missed something, I guess.

    1. User avatar adrian.larkin says:

      4 stars
I see what you mean! I thought the same thing at first, but maybe it’s supposed to be a fresh salad with just that marinade? I used a vinaigrette I had at home.

    2. User avatar claudette.dicki74 says:

      3 stars
Dressing? What you need dressing for? The beef is flavorfull enough! Just toss everything in with that meat and enjoy!

  68. User avatar Oolon Colluphid says:

    3 stars
lol I cooked the beef way too long and it got chewy. Lesson learned: thin slices + fast grill. When I re-did it correctly, it was delicious.

  69. User avatar jess.flatley92 says:

    5 stars
I was skeptical about five-spice on beef salad, but wow it works. Next time I’ll slice the beef even thinner so it cooks super fast without drying out.

  70. User avatar michal.tillman38 says:

    5 stars
I followed it exactly and it was wow. The cilantro + peanuts give it that Thai-ish vibe. Will make again for sure.
