Croque Madame is the epitome of indulgent French comfort food, offering a decadent twist on the classic Croque Monsieur. This delicious sandwich features layers of savory ham and melted cheese, all enveloped in a rich, creamy béchamel sauce. What sets the Croque Madame apart is the addition of a perfectly fried egg on top, adding a delightful richness that elevates the dish to new heights. Perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a satisfying lunch, this dish is a must-try for anyone who loves French cuisine and hearty meals.
The base of a Croque Madame is a traditional Croque Monsieur, which is made with slices of hearty bread (often white or brioche), ham, and Gruyère or Emmental cheese. The magic happens when the sandwich is smothered in a luxurious béchamel sauce, a creamy white sauce made with butter, flour, milk, and a pinch of nutmeg. This sauce not only adds richness but also helps to bind the sandwich together, making every bite incredibly indulgent.
To take it a step further, the Croque Madame includes a fried egg placed on top. The runny yolk adds a creamy, velvety texture that seeps into the sandwich, making each bite a mix of crispy, creamy, and savory. The contrast between the crunchy, toasted bread and the soft, gooey cheese creates a perfect balance of textures that’s hard to beat.
Making a Croque Madame is surprisingly simple, though the combination of flavors and textures feels fancy and refined. Start by making the béchamel sauce, then layer it on toasted bread with ham and cheese. After baking the sandwich until golden and bubbling, top it with a perfectly fried egg, and you’ve got yourself a meal that’s sure to impress.
Croque Madame is a perfect choice for a luxurious brunch or even a satisfying dinner. It pairs wonderfully with a fresh green salad, providing a light contrast to the richness of the sandwich. Whether you’re in the mood for something indulgent or looking to treat yourself to a bit of French elegance, the Croque Madame is a dish you’ll want to savor again and again.

I tried it but the cheese didn’t melt like it should. Maybe my oven’s off?
Maybe try checking the temperature with an oven thermometer? Sometimes they can be off. Love the recipe though!
Cheese melting is tricky. I think you need a more melty cheese like mozzarella, not just gruyere. Just saying.
Honestly, the egg on top is just weird. Why would you put an egg on a sandwich? Doesn’t make sense.
But that’s what makes it a Croque Madame! The egg adds richness. You should try it!
Not bad, but 400°F for 6-8 min felt short. I needed like 12 min for the bread to crisp. Also I used black pepper from the jar… yeah it’s fine.
Yum! Loved it! My kids devoured it in minutes. Will make again for sure!
Too much butter for my liking. Next time, less butter, pls!
Not gonna lie, I’m skeptical about the mustard amount. It was kinda strong, but if you like Dijon then it’s probably perfect.
Wasn’t what I expected. Seems too fancy for breakfast. Us country folks just like it simple!
I think it’s a nice twist on breakfast! You might just need to give it a try. 🌟
This is such a classic—crispy edges, melty cheese, and that runny yolk makes it. I used leftover roast chicken once and it still worked great.
I think I burnt my toast in the oven… what a mess! Still tasted okay though haha!
Quick and easy recipe! Only took me like 15 mins. Perfect for breakfast!
Pretty easy overall. I think 6–8 minutes was a bit short for my oven though; I went closer to 10 and the bread got nicer and browner.
Super easy to make! My kids loved it. Definitely making this again Saturday!
I don’t know man, looks pretty basic to me. How can ya call it a Croque Madame without fancy ingredients? 🤔
That’s awesome! I’m glad your kids liked it. What do you plan to pair it with on Saturday?
This looks good but can I use any cheese? Not sure about Gruyere…
Egg on top? Yuck! I’ll stick to my plain ham and cheese. 😒
Eggs make everything better! You should give it a try. 😊
Croque Madame? I thought this was just a fancy name for a breakfast sandwich. Lol.
This recipe is amazing! So easy to follow and turned out delish!
Croque Madame? Is that the same as a Croque Monsieur? I’m confused. 🤷♂️
I thought they were the same too! 🤔 But the egg is the big diff! More protein and taste!
Yes, a Croque Madame is like a Croque Monsieur, but it has a fried egg on top. So good! 🍳
My egg overflowed a little because I forgot to keep the yolk runny 😅 Still delicious though. Next time I’ll watch it closer.
I tried it but my oven runs hot—burned the edges a little. Still tasty though. Next time I’ll watch it closer and maybe add the cheese earlier.
This was delicious! Never thought a simple sandwich could taste so good. I’ll definitely make it again.
Sounds fancy but isn’t it just a grilled cheese with an egg? Not really impressed.
Not bad, but I think 400°F is a little too hot. My bread got dark before the cheese fully melted. Maybe lower the temp next time.
I totally get that—oven temps vary a lot. I’ve had better luck with 375°F when the bread browns fast. Maybe cover loosely with foil for the first couple minutes too.
Yeah 400°F cooks the outside quick. If your cheese wasn’t melted, try baking 8-10 min or use thinner bread/cheese slices. Foil helps prevent burning.
It was okay, but the cheese barely melted. I think I baked it too long!
I don’t get the fuss. For me, it’s basically just a ham-and-cheese with an egg. Why not do it on the stovetop instead of baking?
Quick question: can I use cheddar? I tried gruyere once and it’s expensive in my country. I used cheddar today and it melted fine, just a little less fancy.
Ate this for lunch and it was great! But you gotta use good cheese! I just used whatever I had.
I totally agree! Good cheese makes all the difference! I used aged cheddar once and it was amazing!
But like, what if your cheese isn’t that great? I dunno, I think it could be tricky… maybe a lower score for that?
I dunno, I tried it, but it was pretty bland. Maybe I missed something? Will try again and add some spices.
This is my go-to brunch sandwich. The Dijon + melty Gruyère combo is perfect, and 6–8 minutes in a hot oven really nails the texture.
Yes! The Dijon and Gruyère combo is the whole point. I usually do closer to 8 minutes so the edges get nice and toasty—works every time.
I followed the steps exactly and the cheese didn’t fully melt—maybe my slices were too thick? The egg was runny like you said, so that part was perfect.
Yup, thicker cheese slices can take longer to melt at 400°F. Next time try thinner slices (or shred it) and maybe add 1–2 minutes—just watch the bread so it doesn’t overbrown. Glad the runny yolk part hit though!
Croque Madame is my comfort food. Using Gruyère is key—makes it taste fancy even when I’m lazy.
Why Dijon though? I used regular mustard and it still tasted kinda the same (maybe). I’m not a mustard person, but it worked.
I followed the recipe exactly but it came out soggy. Maybe my bread was too fresh? 🤔
I think fresh bread can definitely make it soggy! Maybe try using a day-old bread next time? It helps absorb moisture better. 😊
Soggy? That’s weird. I made this and it turned out fine. Are you sure you followed all the steps? 🤔
This recipe is delicious! I added some spinach for a twist, and it was great. 🙂
Croque Madame? More like Croque “oops.” I forgot to spread the mustard on the unbuttered side, so it was kinda bland until I added extra mustard on top of the egg.
Haha “Croque oops” is so real 😅 Glad you caught the mustard thing—this is exactly why the instructions matter. Extra mustard on top sounds perfect with the runny yolk.
I don’t get how you can forget that—should be like step 3, butter side down, mustard on the other side… but yeah, Dijon on top fixes it. Next time maybe add some mustard to the cheese too? Just sayin.
Yuck. I didn’t have ham, so I used turkey and it just wasn’t the same. Never again.
Turkey just doesn’t cut it for this recipe! Ham is the star. Maybe try it again with ham?
Eh. The bread came out ok but mine didn’t really get that ‘croque’ crisp. Maybe my butter was too thin?
Yeah, that “croque” crunch is mostly from butter getting right browned. If your butter was too thin or you barely coated the bread, it won’t crisp much—try a thicker, even layer next time and bake a minute or two longer.
I think 6-8 mins is too short for oven temp differences. My first time it was soft too—now I go closer to 10 minutes (and I watch it) and it gets way crisp. Also, make sure your cheese is fully melting/bubbling.
This was amazing! I never thought I could make something so fancy at home. My family loved it!
OMG! So cheesy and gooey! I loved every bite! Best breakfast ever! 🥰
Looks good, but isn’t it just a fancy grilled cheese? Seems a little overrated. 🤔
I totally agree! Croque Madame is the best breakfast dish out there. So indulgent! 😍
1 pinch salt + pepper is generous? I added more and it tasted better. Also the egg timing is tricky—runny means runny!
I followed it pretty closely but mine took a bit longer than 8 minutes to brown. Still delicious though—nice crispy edges.
Why cook the sandwich in an oven instead of pan-frying? I feel like pan would toast it faster… but my sandwich still turned out tasty.
Croque Madame sounds fancy but it’s just a glorified grilled cheese with egg? Not impressed.
I made this for brunch and everyone went back for seconds. The egg on top is the whole point—so good!
I burnt the first batch, lol. I think my oven runs hot. But when I adjusted, the sandwich was actually restaurant-level.
My family loves this! So easy to make, and I can add other fillings too! Maybe some spinach next time?
I tried adding spinach too and it turned out amazing! Definitely give it a shot! 🤗
Made this for brunch and wow—perfect melty center. The runny yolk on top is the whole magic. Would definitely do again.
So good! I used regular cheddar instead of Gruyère and it still worked. The yolk on top makes it feel fancy without much effort.
