Cajun Cabbage Skillet

June 8, 2026

Cajun Cabbage Skillet is a hearty, flavorful dish that transforms simple ingredients into a satisfying meal packed with Southern-inspired flavor. Featuring tender cabbage, smoky sausage, onions, and a blend of bold Cajun seasonings, this one-pan recipe is perfect for busy weeknights when you need a quick and comforting dinner. It’s affordable, easy to prepare, and loaded with flavor in every bite.

One of the reasons this dish is so popular is its simplicity. Cabbage is an inexpensive vegetable that becomes incredibly tender and flavorful when cooked with savory ingredients and spices. Combined with smoked sausage and aromatic vegetables, it creates a complete meal that is both filling and nutritious.

To make Cajun Cabbage Skillet, start by slicing a head of green cabbage into thin strips. Dice an onion and bell pepper, and slice your favorite smoked sausage into rounds. Andouille sausage is a traditional choice because it adds a rich smoky flavor that pairs perfectly with Cajun spices, but other smoked sausages work well too.

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add a small amount of oil. Cook the sausage until lightly browned, allowing it to develop a rich flavor. Remove it from the skillet and set aside. In the same pan, sauté the onions and bell peppers until softened. Add minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

Stir in the cabbage and season generously with Cajun seasoning, paprika, black pepper, and a pinch of salt. As the cabbage cooks, it will begin to soften and reduce in volume. Return the sausage to the skillet and stir everything together. Cook for about 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender but still has a slight bite.

For additional flavor, many cooks like to add diced tomatoes, a splash of chicken broth, or a few dashes of hot sauce. These ingredients enhance the dish while maintaining its rustic, comforting character.

Serve Cajun Cabbage Skillet on its own as a complete meal or pair it with cornbread, rice, or roasted potatoes. It also reheats well, making it a great option for meal prep and leftovers.

Bold, comforting, and packed with Southern-inspired flavors, Cajun Cabbage Skillet proves that simple ingredients can create an unforgettable meal. With minimal cleanup and maximum flavor, it’s a recipe that deserves a place in your regular dinner rotation.

    1. User avatar luis.littel1964 says:

      4 stars
I thought the same! Cajun usually packs a punch, but I didn’t find it spicy either. Hot sauce definitely helps!

  22. User avatar long.hilpert says:

Why do people like cabbage so much? It’s kinda bland if you ask me. Just my opinion.

  24. User avatar mauricio.turner59 says:

Too much cabbage for my liking. I should’ve added more meat or maybe some rice.

This is one of those recipes that’s better than it sounds. Also, I didn’t have parsley so I used dried—still good, just not as fresh.

    1. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

      3 stars
I tried it without parsley once and it was still fine, but I think my cabbage was way more crunchy. Maybe I didn’t cook it long enough after uncovering? Also I used vegetable broth instead of chicken… tasted kinda off but not terrible.

    2. 5 stars
Totally agree—this kind of simple skillet recipe always surprises me. I’ve made it a few times and the cabbage comes out perfect. Parsley tip is good too; I bet dried just can’t match that fresh pop.

  30. User avatar vertie.schinner says:

    3 stars
I didn’t have smoked paprika so I swapped regular paprika—still good, just less smoky. Would recommend keeping the broth amount the same because it helps steam the cabbage.

  31. 4 stars
I’m skeptical about “just cabbage” dishes, but okay… this surprised me. The broth helps a lot. I didn’t even use the butter, and it was still rich enough. Great for weeknights.

  32. User avatar gene.ohara says:

    2 stars
Way too oily for my taste. I love olive oil but maybe next time I’ll use 1 tbsp or drain some sausage fat before adding the onion.

    1. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

      5 stars
Good call on draining the sausage fat—this dish can definitely get greasy, especially with smoked sausage. Next time I’ll try your “1 tbsp oil” approach too.

  33. User avatar Mahalia Kerluke MD says:

    2 stars
Way too much liquid evaporated for me—mine dried out. I think my skillet was too hot or my cabbage was too thick. I fixed it by adding another splash of broth and it turned out great.

  34. 5 stars
This turned out super flavorful—smoky sausage + that Cajun seasoning is such a good combo. Mine needed a tiny extra pinch of Cajun at the end, but otherwise followed the steps and it was perfect.

    1. User avatar Harry Legg says:

      3 stars
I made this but it was a little salty for me, even with only 1 1/4 tsp Cajun seasoning. Not sure if my sausage was saltier. Still tasty though.

    2. User avatar wellRespected says:

      5 stars
Yes!! That smoky sausage really does make the Cajun seasoning pop. I’m glad you got it dialed in with just a pinch at the end—mine always benefits from a little extra too.

  35. User avatar faustino.rice70 says:

    4 stars
This is a great low-carb-ish dinner. I served it with cornbread and it was a whole vibe. Next time I’ll add bell pepper too.

  36. 5 stars
    Fire!

  37. User avatar warner.wiza says:

    4 stars
I liked how quick and simple it is. I used Andouille and the whole skillet smelled amazing. Cabbage got tender without getting mushy. Will make again.

  38. User avatar sharice.schiller61 says:

    3 stars
I followed the steps pretty closely and it was decent, but it felt a little salty from the sausage and seasoning. Maybe go lighter on Cajun seasoning next time. Still, it smelled amazing while cooking.

  39. 5 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about skillet cabbage tasting “Cajun,” but it totally worked. Next time I’ll add a pinch of cayenne for more kick.

  40. User avatar parker.rutherford75 says:

    3 stars
My garlic burned at the 30-second step 😅 but I scraped it and added fresh garlic next round. Flavor was good though. Next time I’ll lower heat. Lessons learned.

  41. User avatar sherice.lockman says:

    2 stars
My garlic burned a little (oops). I think my heat was too high. The flavor was okay but not as fragrant as I expected—next time I’ll cook it for less.

  42. User avatar Glorfindel says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have chicken broth so I used water + a pinch of bouillon. Worked fine. The cabbage was tender and the skillet smelled amazing.

  43. 5 stars
Made this tonight—so comforting! The smoked sausage + Cajun seasoning combo is perfect, and the cabbage got tender without getting mushy. I added a tiny pinch of red pepper flakes too. Will absolutely make again.

    1. User avatar georgene.willms says:

      5 stars
I’m pretty picky about cabbage dishes and this one nailed it. I used andouille and it still came out great. Next time I might add a splash more broth if it dries too fast.

    2. User avatar nicky.kunze79 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! I made this last week and it was like a warm, savory hug. The cabbage texture is the best part—tender but not sad and mushy. Love the red pepper flake idea.

  44. User avatar hugh.beer says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about cabbage tasting “Cajun,” but the spices totally carried it. Would be even better with a squeeze of lemon maybe.

    1. User avatar Emily Saunders says:

      5 stars
I felt the same—cabbage doesn’t sound Cajun-y at first. But once the smoked sausage and Cajun seasoning hit, it totally makes sense. I’ll try adding a squeeze of lemon next time too!

  45. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

    4 stars
Not bad at all. I used andouille and it tasted really flavorful, but my cabbage took closer to 15 minutes to get tender. Next time I’ll slice thinner. Overall solid one-pan meal.

  46. User avatar Pasta Fasta says:

    5 stars
This is the first time cabbage didn’t taste “boring” to me. The smoky paprika made a big difference. Quick and easy, and my whole kitchen smelled like a Cajun spot. 10/10.

  47. User avatar lee.nicolas says:

    3 stars
Way too spicy for me even with ‘adjust to taste’—I think my Cajun seasoning mix was hotter than expected. Maybe use less or sweeter sausage. Otherwise good texture.

    1. User avatar kurtis.heller2 says:

      4 stars
Hmm, I wonder if your sausage was the real culprit. Some smoked sausages are basically spicy themselves. Next time I’d cut the Cajun seasoning to 1/2 tsp and maybe add butter at the end. Otherwise, this looks like a solid idea.

    2. 5 stars
Totally agree—Cajun seasoning can be wildly hotter depending on brand. I usually start with like 1 tsp (or even less) and add from there. Also adding a touch more broth or a small sweet note (carrot/onion sautéed longer) helps.

  48. User avatar mercedez.altenwerth65 says:

    5 stars
This is a great low-carb-ish meal. I served it with cornbread anyway because I’m weak like that. Delicious and filling.

  49. User avatar heather.hane71 says:

    2 stars
Way too spicy for my taste. I know it says adjust to taste but I still found the Cajun seasoning overpowering. Could fix with less seasoning next time.

  50. 4 stars
Good flavor, but my cabbage needed way longer than 8–10 minutes to soften. Maybe my cabbage was thicker? Still delicious though.

  51. User avatar Lumberjack says:

    5 stars
Made this last night—so flavorful for how simple it is. The smoked paprika really pops. I used a bit extra Cajun seasoning and it was perfect.

  52. User avatar forrest.hackett98 says:

    3 stars
Cajun seasoning is different everywhere—mine was kinda salty, so I didn’t add extra. The flavor was still good, just watch the salt.

  53. User avatar clark.langosh55 says:

    3 stars
I used pre-minced garlic and maybe I overcooked it a bit—step 3 felt too short? Flavor was okay, but could be more punchy.

    1. User avatar Tarsha Bergnaum says:

      2 stars
Hmm I think you should’ve cooked the garlic way longer than 30 seconds. That’s probably why it felt weak to you. I usually brown garlic with the onions for like 5 minutes, otherwise it tastes flat. But pre-minced garlic cooks quicker so maybe I’m wrong lol.

    2. User avatar peggy.runolfsdottir79 says:

      5 stars
Totally get it—Step 3 is only 30 seconds, so if the garlic was pre-minced and the pan was too hot, it can go from fragrant to kinda dull fast. Next time try adding garlic a touch later, or aim closer to 15–20 seconds. Also a splash more Cajun seasoning/paprika or even a pinch of salt at the end can give that “punch.”

  54. 4 stars
I followed it pretty closely, only swapped chicken broth for veggie broth. Tastes great and the liquid evaporating step really helps the texture.

  55. User avatar mariano.renner1980 says:

    5 stars
Cabbage skillet??? sounds weird but I tried it. Kinda like a sausage and kraut thing, but better. 10/10, would cook again.

    1. User avatar joann.quigley97 says:

      5 stars
Okay this actually makes me crave it 😄 Cabbage can be so good when it soaks up all that sausage flavor. Glad you liked it!

    2. User avatar marco.powlowski1989 says:

      3 stars
I’m skeptical… cabbage + sausage is a classic vibe but “Cajun seasoning” in a skillet feels a little random. Still, 10/10?! What kind of sausage did you use (spicy or mild)?

  56. User avatar erline.mcglynn87 says:

    3 stars
One question: is it really 14 oz sausage? Mine felt like a lot for one cabbage. Turned out fine, just wondering.

    1. User avatar dallas.dubuque says:

      4 stars
I had the same thought. I weighed mine and it was close to 14 oz, but it honestly felt like way more. I think different cabbage sizes make it seem off.

    2. User avatar barrett.goldner18 says:

      5 stars
Yep—14 oz is pretty standard for one medium cabbage. Sausage is just a bit heavier than you’d think, especially once it cooks down and you slice it into rounds.

  57. User avatar Colin the Security Robot says:

    5 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about cabbage + sausage, but wow. It turned into a kind of cozy skillet situation. Will make again for sure.

  58. User avatar charolette.nikolaus1962 says:

    4 stars
Pretty tasty, but my cabbage took longer than the recipe said. I think my slices were thicker. Still, the end result was worth the wait.

    1. 5 stars
Yeah, thicker cabbage slices definitely slow it down—8–10 min covered is more like a guideline. Next time I’ll cut them a bit thinner and maybe add a couple extra minutes of broth if it looks dry.

  59. 5 stars
Made this tonight and it was super comforting. The smoked sausage + Cajun seasoning combo is perfect, and the cabbage got tender without getting mushy.

    1. User avatar jeremy.schinner says:

      5 stars
Yes! I love when the cabbage actually gets tender but still has some bite. Smoked sausage + Cajun seasoning is such a good combo—this sounds exactly like the kind of comfort food I’d make on a weeknight.

  60. 3 stars
My garlic burned a little at the 30 seconds step (I was multitasking like an amateur). Still salvaged it, but the flavor got a bit harsh. Watch the heat!

    1. User avatar donovan.flatley61 says:

      5 stars
Yep, garlic goes from perfect to burnt FAST. Next time I’d do it closer to 15–20 seconds and lower the heat a bit after sautéing the onion.

  61. 4 stars
I followed the steps but my cabbage stayed a little crunchy after 10–15 minutes total. Next time I’ll slice it thinner or add a splash more broth. Still tasty though!
