Braided Easter Bread

April 18, 2025

Braided Easter bread is a soft, slightly sweet bread that’s traditionally baked for Easter celebrations. Its braided shape symbolizes unity and rebirth, making it a beautiful and meaningful addition to any holiday table. With its rich texture and slightly sweet flavor, this bread pairs wonderfully with butter, cheese, or jam and makes a perfect centerpiece for your Easter brunch or dinner.

To start, gather your ingredients: all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, active dry yeast, eggs, milk, butter, and a bit of vanilla extract. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk along with a teaspoon of sugar. Allow it to sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy. This step ensures the yeast is active and ready to help the dough rise.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Create a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Mix everything together until a dough forms. Once the dough comes together, knead it on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough feels too sticky, add a little more flour, but be careful not to add too much, as the dough should remain soft and slightly tacky.

After kneading, place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1-1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size. This slow rise will help the bread develop its light, fluffy texture.

Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air and divide it into three equal portions. Roll each portion into a long rope. To braid the bread, line up the three ropes and pinch them together at the top. Carefully braid the ropes together, ensuring the dough remains even. Once braided, tuck the ends under to create a neat loaf shape.

Place the braided dough onto a greased baking sheet and cover it with the towel again. Let it rise for another 30 minutes to an hour. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) during this time.

Before baking, brush the top of the bread with a mixture of egg wash (one egg beaten with a tablespoon of water) to give it a golden, glossy finish when baked. Bake the bread for 25-30 minutes, or until it’s golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Once baked, let the bread cool on a wire rack. Braided Easter bread is traditionally enjoyed on Easter Sunday but is also a wonderful treat for any occasion. You can serve it with butter, spread, or even enjoy it on its own as a sweet, comforting bread.

I don’t really get why it’s called ‘Easter Bread’. I made it for Sunday and it was just okay.

It was too hard for me to braid the dough. Can it be made in a loaf pan instead?

  4. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

It turned out kinda hard for me. I thought it was suppose to be soft. 🤷‍♂️

      3 stars
I dunno, mine turned out soft. You sure you followed the steps right?

    2. 4 stars
Don’t worry, it happens! Maybe let it rise a bit longer next time? 😄

Egg wash? I thought you just put it in the oven. Did I mess up?

I made this for Easter and it was a hit! Everybody loved the flavor! 👍

I dunno, it looks a bit complicated. How can bread be that special? 🤔

What if I don’t have lemon zest? Is that crucial?

  8. User avatar Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz says:

    2 stars
Meh. It was alright. I’ve had better bread from the store. Just sayin’.

    1. User avatar shanon.bogan says:

      3 stars
Honestly, it does take practice to get that bakery level. But maybe you’re right, store bread is convenient. 🤷‍♂️

    2. User avatar Heide Cummerata says:

I think your taste buds might be broken! This bread is amazing if you follow the recipe right. Don’t give up on homemade bread too soon! 😊

Simple recipe. Perfect for Easter! But I added some spices and it was much better! 😋

  10. User avatar rochel.borer97 says:

    2 stars
I followed the recipe exactly but it didn’t rise much. Maybe my yeast was too old? Not happy.

  11. User avatar shaniqua.farrell6 says:

    1 star
This is NOT how you make bread! You need different ingredients! 😠

  12. User avatar jay.rutherford57 says:

    3 stars
I don’t get why you have to let it rise twice. Seems like a waste of time. But it was good, still.

  13. User avatar Anton Kassulke says:

    3 stars
Just a little advice: let the dough rise longer. Mine didn’t rise much.

  14. User avatar Hortense Gerhold says:

    1 star
Not my favorite. The texture was weird. I prefer store-bought bread.

  15. User avatar annice.schmitt1967 says:

Worked fine for me, but the dough was really sticky. I think I used too much milk? 🤔

  16. User avatar isaac.gerlach79 says:

This bread is so delicious! My family loved it. Definitely making it again! 👍

  17. User avatar james.doyle1998 says:

I found it a bit too sweet for my taste. Maybe less sugar next time?

    1. User avatar bennie.conroy says:

      4 stars
I agree, it could be a little less sweet. I think if you cut back to 1/3 cup sugar, it would be perfect!

    2. 3 stars
Sweet? I thought it was just right! Everyone has different tastes, I guess. Maybe add more lemon zest for a tart balance?

  18. User avatar nga.kunde1965 says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have any milk, so I used water instead. Still came out fine, you know?

  19. User avatar Fortune Teller says:

    4 stars
Baked it twice! The second time it was way better. Use fresh eggs! 🐣

  20. 4 stars
So easy to follow! My kids had fun braiding the dough. Will make it yearly now!

  21. User avatar albert.daniel23 says:

    2 stars
It rose beautifully the first time, but the second rise didn’t really happen. Maybe my room wasn’t warm enough—used lukewarm milk though.

    1. User avatar terica.miller66 says:

      5 stars
Warm is key for the 2nd rise. I usually proof mine in the oven with just the light on (not heating). Even 10–15°F cooler can make it barely budge. Next time, cover it well so it doesn’t dry out.

    2. User avatar Gandalf the Grey says:

      4 stars
That sounds frustrating 😕 I think your guess is likely right—second rise really needs a warm, consistent spot. Also make sure the yeast wasn’t already slowed (expired or too-hot water/milk) and that you didn’t knead in extra flour after it started getting smooth.

  22. User avatar Nemesis says:

    5 stars
This looks amazing! Can’t wait to make it for Easter. Thank you for sharing!

    1. User avatar Frost Troll says:

Yum! I added raisins. It made it sweeter! Delicious.

  25. User avatar collin.hegmann82 says:

Looks easy, but for some reason mine didn’t rise. What did I do wrong??

  26. User avatar patsy.emmerich68 says:

This is the best Easter bread recipe! It turned out so fluffy and delicious. Everyone loved it!

    1. 5 stars
I’m glad it turned out so well for you! I can’t wait to try this recipe myself. My family loves sweet bread!

  27. 2 stars
Dough didn’t rise for me. I think my yeast was expired or something.

  28. User avatar kathryne.herzog90 says:

    3 stars
I dunno, why do you need lemon zest? Just feels off. Maybe just stick to basics?

    1. User avatar sanford.stark3 says:

      2 stars
But lemon zest ain’t needed, right? Bread is bread! Why complicate things?

    2. User avatar elmer.feeney says:

      5 stars
Lemon zest adds a fresh twist that elevates the flavor! Sometimes the extras make all the difference.

  29. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    5 stars
So fluffy and sweet! I love how it makes my kitchen smell. Will definitely share it with friends!

  30. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

Is butter really necessary? I thought bread is made with oil??

    1. 5 stars
Butter adds richness and flavor! It’s not the same with just oil. You should totally give it a try!

    2. User avatar cole.leffler says:

      2 stars
But isn’t oil better for baking? Butter is just fat, right? I dunno, this recipe seems off.

  31. User avatar jeanette.bednar41 says:

    3 stars
Is it supposed to take this long? I got impatient waiting for it to rise.

  32. 5 stars
I make this every Easter. It’s tradition in my family. Simple and tasty. Love it!

    1. User avatar Magrathean sperm whale says:

      5 stars
That sounds lovely! I’d love to try making it for my family too. Traditions are so important, especially at Easter.

    2. 2 stars
Hmmm, are you sure it’s that easy? I tried a recipe like this once, and it turned out like a rock. Maybe I just don’t knead good 😂.

  33. User avatar Barliman Butterbur says:

    1 star
I messed up the dough and it turned into a pancake instead of bread. Ugh!

  34. User avatar nella.fahey48 says:

    1. 5 stars
That sounds so lovely! I can almost smell it now. ❤️ Nothing beats grandma’s recipes!

    2. 2 stars
Looks good, but why is it braided? Seems kinda extra for a bread. Just bake it normally!

  37. User avatar ileana.shanahan says:

    5 stars
YUMMY!!! Can’t believe I made this. Everyone should try it!!

    1. User avatar Bowen Arrow says:

This came out so soft and golden. The braid looks adorable—my family ate it before it even cooled fully 😅

  39. User avatar Trin Tragula says:

Baked this yesterday. It turned out hard as a rock. What did I do wrong?

  40. User avatar theresa.pfannerstill2018 says:

    2 stars
Looks fancy! What’s the point of the lemon zest? Can’t taste it anyway, haha.

    1. User avatar elbert.abbott1967 says:

      4 stars
Lemon zest adds a nice brightness to the flavor! Even if you can’t taste it much, it helps balance out the sweetness. 😄

  41. User avatar wilbur.streich says:

    3 stars
I think there’s too much sugar in this. It tasted kinda sweet for my liking.

    1. User avatar Brand-shei says:

      3 stars
Nah, I think it’s fine. Bread needs a bit of sweetness. Can’t be too sweet tho, am I right?

    2. User avatar kenny.smith says:

      4 stars
I actually thought the sweetness was just right! But everyone’s taste is different, I guess. Maybe try less sugar next time?

  42. User avatar chin.lind says:

    2 stars
Easy recipe but I think I can make bread without yeast. Just my opinion.

    2. User avatar jeremy.wunsch45 says:

      3 stars
It looks nice and all, but is it really worth all that effort? I wonder if it would just be easier to buy bread from the store.

  45. User avatar erminia.pagac98 says:

    4 stars
Yummy! But you forgot to mention how much zest to use. 😂

  46. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

    3 stars
I don’t think this is how you make real Easter bread. My grandmother used to bake something different.

  47. 2 stars
I think it needs more lemon zest. Otherwise, it’s just plain.

    1. User avatar chelsie.swaniawski50 says:

      2 stars
More lemon? Really? I thought it was fine as is. Maybe you just like things more tangy?

    2. User avatar karin.powlowski50 says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! Some lemon zest would really brighten it up. Can’t wait to try it with more zest next time!

  48. User avatar King Dorephan says:

    2 stars
Eh, it turned out too dry for me. I think I needed more milk. Not sure if I’ll try again.

  49. 3 stars
Is it really necessary to let it rise twice? Seems like that’s a lot of waiting!

    1. User avatar Gurney Halleck says:

      4 stars
Yeah, it seems like a lot of time to wait, but that second rise really helps make it fluffier. Trust me, it’s worth it!

  50. User avatar wellRespected says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I’m skeptical about braiding dough that’s this enriched. I thought it would tear, but it was surprisingly easy. Next time I’ll brush a bit more egg wash for shine.

  51. User avatar Gale Leuschke says:

    4 stars
Yum! I added some chocolate chips to it because why not? It’s delicious!

    1. User avatar Hasimir Fenring says:

      2 stars
Uh, chocolate in bread? Idk if that works… bread is supposed to be bread, not dessert.

    2. 5 stars
Chocolate chips? That sounds amazing! I gotta try that next time. 🤤

  52. User avatar noelia.quitzon2 says:

    5 stars
I added some chocolate chips and it was amazing!!! Can you do a choclate version next?

Confusing steps. Is the dough supposed to rise twice? 🤔

  55. User avatar stewart.pfeffer says:

Love that!! 😄 The braid always intimidates me, but this sounds pretty doable. Did you get a nice golden crust with the egg wash?
