Braided Easter Bread

April 18, 2025

Braided Easter bread is a soft, slightly sweet bread that’s traditionally baked for Easter celebrations. Its braided shape symbolizes unity and rebirth, making it a beautiful and meaningful addition to any holiday table. With its rich texture and slightly sweet flavor, this bread pairs wonderfully with butter, cheese, or jam and makes a perfect centerpiece for your Easter brunch or dinner.

To start, gather your ingredients: all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, active dry yeast, eggs, milk, butter, and a bit of vanilla extract. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk along with a teaspoon of sugar. Allow it to sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy. This step ensures the yeast is active and ready to help the dough rise.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Create a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Mix everything together until a dough forms. Once the dough comes together, knead it on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough feels too sticky, add a little more flour, but be careful not to add too much, as the dough should remain soft and slightly tacky.

After kneading, place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rise in a warm place for about 1-1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size. This slow rise will help the bread develop its light, fluffy texture.

Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air and divide it into three equal portions. Roll each portion into a long rope. To braid the bread, line up the three ropes and pinch them together at the top. Carefully braid the ropes together, ensuring the dough remains even. Once braided, tuck the ends under to create a neat loaf shape.

Place the braided dough onto a greased baking sheet and cover it with the towel again. Let it rise for another 30 minutes to an hour. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) during this time.

Before baking, brush the top of the bread with a mixture of egg wash (one egg beaten with a tablespoon of water) to give it a golden, glossy finish when baked. Bake the bread for 25-30 minutes, or until it’s golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Once baked, let the bread cool on a wire rack. Braided Easter bread is traditionally enjoyed on Easter Sunday but is also a wonderful treat for any occasion. You can serve it with butter, spread, or even enjoy it on its own as a sweet, comforting bread.

    1. User avatar shanon.bogan says:

This is NOT how you make bread! You need different ingredients! 😠

  12. User avatar jay.rutherford57 says:

I don’t get why you have to let it rise twice. Seems like a waste of time. But it was good, still.

  13. User avatar Anton Kassulke says:

    3 stars
Just a little advice: let the dough rise longer. Mine didn’t rise much.

  14. User avatar Hortense Gerhold says:

Dough didn’t rise for me. I think my yeast was expired or something.

  26. User avatar kathryne.herzog90 says:

    3 stars
I dunno, why do you need lemon zest? Just feels off. Maybe just stick to basics?

    1. User avatar sanford.stark3 says:

      2 stars
But lemon zest ain’t needed, right? Bread is bread! Why complicate things?

    2. User avatar elmer.feeney says:

      5 stars
Lemon zest adds a fresh twist that elevates the flavor! Sometimes the extras make all the difference.

Is butter really necessary? I thought bread is made with oil??

    1. 5 stars
Butter adds richness and flavor! It’s not the same with just oil. You should totally give it a try!

    2. User avatar cole.leffler says:

      2 stars
But isn’t oil better for baking? Butter is just fat, right? I dunno, this recipe seems off.

  29. User avatar jeanette.bednar41 says:

    3 stars
Is it supposed to take this long? I got impatient waiting for it to rise.

  30. User avatar Barliman Butterbur says:

I messed up the dough and it turned into a pancake instead of bread. Ugh!

I think there’s too much sugar in this. It tasted kinda sweet for my liking.

    1. User avatar Brand-shei says:

      3 stars
Nah, I think it’s fine. Bread needs a bit of sweetness. Can’t be too sweet tho, am I right?

    2. User avatar kenny.smith says:

      4 stars
I actually thought the sweetness was just right! But everyone’s taste is different, I guess. Maybe try less sugar next time?

Yummy! But you forgot to mention how much zest to use. 😂

  39. 2 stars
I think it needs more lemon zest. Otherwise, it’s just plain.
