Blueberry Scones

September 1, 2025

There’s something undeniably comforting about a warm blueberry scone fresh out of the oven. With their tender, crumbly texture and bursts of sweet, juicy berries, scones are a timeless baked good that strikes the perfect balance between rustic and refined. They’re simple enough for a cozy weekend breakfast yet elegant enough to serve at brunch, afternoon tea, or a special gathering.

Blueberry scones are especially beloved because of the way the berries complement the buttery, slightly sweet dough. Each bite offers a pop of tartness from the blueberries that pairs beautifully with the richness of the pastry. While some prefer their scones plain and lightly sweetened, others enjoy finishing them with a glaze, sugar sprinkle, or even a touch of lemon zest to brighten the flavor.

What makes scones so appealing is their versatility. They can be served warm or at room temperature, split and topped with butter or clotted cream, or enjoyed on their own as a satisfying snack. Blueberry scones, in particular, are perfect year-round: they’re a refreshing summer treat when made with fresh berries, yet they feel cozy and comforting in colder months, especially when paired with a hot cup of tea or coffee.

Scones also carry a sense of tradition. With origins in Scotland, they’ve long been a staple of British tea culture, often served alongside homemade jam and cream. Over time, they’ve evolved, with countless variations appearing in cafés and bakeries worldwide. Blueberry scones are now one of the most popular flavors, appealing to both classic and modern tastes.

Whether you’re an experienced baker or new to the kitchen, making scones is a rewarding project that doesn’t require complicated techniques. Their rustic look is part of their charm, and they’re just as delicious when slightly imperfect. Blueberry scones are a reminder of how simple ingredients can create something truly delightful, turning an ordinary morning or afternoon into something special.

So the next time you’re craving a treat that’s equal parts comforting and elegant, reach for a blueberry scone, it’s a timeless classic that never disappoints.

I tried this recipe but my scones came out flat. Not sure what I did wrong. Maybe too much butter?

I don’t know what I did wrong, but mine came out flat. Followed the recipe exactly. Hmm.

Blueberry scones? Love them! I used frozen blueberries and they worked fine! 👍

blueberry scones are my fave but this recipe took too long! #rushedlife

  7. 3 stars
Not the greatest. They taste too much like flour. I think I need moar sugar next time!

    1. 4 stars
Maybe you just need to add more blueberries? That could balance out the flour taste! 😊

I don’t know… I thought they were sweet enough. But taste is subjective, I guess.

400°F is fine, but mine browned faster than 18 minutes. I’d say check around 15-16 minutes if your oven runs hot.

  16. User avatar waylon.frami says:

    4 stars
Didn’t have blueberries so I used raspberries instead, still good but not as sweet.

  17. User avatar Spriggan Earth Mother says:

    3 stars
I used frozen blueberries (didn’t thaw). They bled a ton and the color was kinda weird, but taste-wise they were still really good. Texture was more cakey though.

  18. User avatar ezra.gulgowski0 says:

    3 stars
Is it just me or do these taste kinda bland? Maybe more sugar would help?

  19. User avatar mandie.kuhlman60 says:

I thought this was supposed to be easy, but there were so many steps!! 😩

  22. 2 stars
Why do you have to use buttermilk? Can’t I just use regular milk? I tried it and they were kinda flat.

  23. 3 stars
Why buttermilk? Can I just use regular milk? 🤔

  24. User avatar delcie.corwin says:

    5 stars
These turned out super tender inside—my oven runs hot but 18 minutes was perfect. The blueberry pockets are legit. I’ll make these again for sure.

  25. User avatar nguyet.schoen says:

    5 stars
Blueberry scones are my favorite! I added lemon zest for extra flavor and it was delicious!

  26. User avatar rossana.glover says:

    4 stars
I love scones but I always thought they were too fussy. This was straightforward. Chilling the butter helped a lot, and the sweetness is just right.

  27. User avatar edward.cruickshank75 says:

    3 stars
Blueberry scones? Sounds nice but I’m skeptical about the buttermilk measurement—1/2 cup feels low. Also I forgot the egg wash once and they were still okay, so maybe it’s not essential.

    1. 4 stars
Nah egg wash is optional, I’ve skipped it too lol. Still tastes like scone, just less shiny. Also I think 1/2 cup buttermilk is fine if your butter is cold—depends on how dry your flour is.

    2. 4 stars
I get what you mean about the buttermilk—1/2 cup does sound a little skimpy. But scones are pretty forgiving; if the dough is even slightly shaggy, it usually comes together. Mine turned out great with that exact amount.

  28. User avatar Mr. Modesta Barton says:

    2 stars
400°F feels too low for 2026 standards (jk). But seriously, mine browned fast on the outside and stayed pale inside. Next time I’ll lower the rack or bake a bit longer covered.

  29. 5 stars
    Wow—so easy. Wow!

  30. User avatar williams.roberts says:

    1 star
    Dry. Tastes like plain biscuits.

    1. 2 stars
Ugh, sorry they came out dry! Did you measure the flour with a spoon-and-level? If it’s a little over, scones go tough/dry fast. Also make sure you don’t overmix—“just combined” really matters.

    2. User avatar laverne.pollich18 says:

      3 stars
Plain biscuits? Nah, that’s not right 😅 I’ve found they need more blueberries (or a little lemon zest) and bake until they’re deeper golden. I’d also try 1–2 extra minutes if your oven runs cool.

  31. User avatar catheryn.lueilwitz56 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good! I think next time I’ll chill the dough a bit longer before cutting—mine spread slightly. But the flavor is spot on and the crumb is tender.

  32. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

    4 stars
I used frozen blueberries and they bled a ton—still tasty, just more like blueberry biscuits. Maybe thaw and drain next time.

    1. User avatar oliver.ratke says:

      5 stars
Ohh that makes sense—frozen berries can be juicier. I’d definitely try thawing and draining (or even tossing them with a little flour) next time. Your “blueberry biscuit” description also sounds delicious, honestly!

  33. 3 stars
I followed it pretty closely, but my scones spread a bit and weren’t as tall. I think I over-kneaded when I “knead lightly” (oops). Still tasty though.

    1. User avatar scottie.hintz says:

      5 stars
Honestly that sounds exactly like the “over-knead” issue—scones want tender, not developed gluten. Next time, mix until just combined and try patting/pressing instead of kneading.

  34. User avatar anibal.nikolaus95 says:

    4 stars
Easy! Just mix and bake. I ain’t no chef but they turned out just fine!

  35. User avatar Mrs. Raymond Beatty says:

    5 stars
Made these today and they turned out fluffy on the inside! The egg wash gives such a nice golden top. I used frozen blueberries (tossed in a little flour) and it still worked.

    1. 5 stars
Yes! Fluffy on the inside is exactly what I hope for with scones 😄 And that egg wash golden top really makes a difference. Frozen blueberries with a little flour—nice tip!

    2. User avatar zachary.volkman1999 says:

      4 stars
I tried these too and honestly they were good, but mine came out a bit dense. I think I overmixed when I added the buttermilk. Still tasted great though—might try less kneading next time.

  36. User avatar lawana.rohan2007 says:

    3 stars
I tried cutting triangles, but they all came out uneven and some got bigger. Honestly, I think that’s why the bake time varies. Still good though.

  37. User avatar blair.boyer90 says:

    5 stars
These scones are amazing! I love the blueberries in them. Definitely making again!

  38. 4 stars
I love this recipe! But what’s the point of the vanilla if you can’t taste it? 🤔

    1. 2 stars
Idk, but I can taste it in my blueberry muffins! Do you really need it? 🤷‍♂️

    2. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

      4 stars
I think the vanilla just adds a bit of depth, you might not taste it directly but it makes the flavor more rounded. 😊

  39. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly but my dough was super sticky—maybe my butter wasn’t cold enough? Still tasted good though, just not very “triangle” shaped.

  40. 1 star
1 star because mine stuck to the parchment even though I used parchment. Also the sugar fell off?? Idk. Maybe I did something wrong but I’m not sure what.

  41. 1 star
Scones?? More like rocks. Didn’t rise at all. Ugh, what a waste of blueberries.

  42. User avatar Ilona Parisian says:

    3 stars
They turned out too crumbly for my taste. Maybe less flour next time? 😕

  43. 5 stars
These scones are delish! I used frozen blueberries and they turned out great! 😍

    1. 5 stars
Frozen blueberries? That’s a great idea! I’ll have to try it that way next time.

  44. User avatar Ulysses Feeney says:

    5 stars
Soooo good! I can’t wait to make them for breakfast! 🥰

  45. 5 stars
These scones are amazing! I can’t believe how fluffy they turned out. Will definitely make again!

  46. User avatar shayne.sipes76 says:

    3 stars
Mine were a bit dry and crumbly, like they didn’t really rise much. I might’ve overmixed after adding the buttermilk. Next time I’ll mix less—still good with tea.

  47. User avatar orval.schuster67 says:

    2 stars
Nah, I didn’t like them. Tasted too much like flour. Pass.

  48. User avatar Blue Dartwing says:

    3 stars
I followed the recipe but mine came out kinda flat. Maybe I did something wrong? 😕

    1. 4 stars
Don’t worry, it happens! Maybe your baking powder wasn’t fresh? That can really affect how they rise. 😊

    2. User avatar carey.heathcote18 says:

      3 stars
Flat scones? Hmm, did you press the dough too hard? Or maybe not enough buttermilk? Just a thought.

  49. User avatar Slaughterfish says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but my dough was way too sticky even after chilling the butter. I think I overmixed at step 6? Also I forgot to dust with flour—oops. Still ate them though 😅

  50. User avatar Restless Draugr says:

    4 stars
Followed the steps exactly—400°F, 1-inch thickness—and they came out great. Next time I’ll add a tiny bit more sugar on top because I like them sweeter.

  51. User avatar andre.jakubowski34 says:

    3 stars
Why is everyone raving? They were just okay. Did I do something wrong? 🤷‍♂️

    1. User avatar salena.wintheiser67 says:

      4 stars
I think they can be hit or miss! Not everyone bakes the same way, maybe it’s just the oven? 🤷‍♀️

    2. 5 stars
I disagree! I loved them. You might just not be a scone person! 😅

  52. User avatar ellsworth.johns63 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good base recipe. I had to bake closer to 22 minutes and my dough was a bit sticky, so I added extra flour while shaping. The egg wash gives a nice golden top.

  53. User avatar vikki.brekke1959 says:

    4 stars
Tastes great! But are scones supposed to be this crumbly? I’m used to a denser texture.

  54. User avatar lashonda.deckow83 says:

    5 stars
Wow. I made these in a rush and still nailed it. I only cut circles instead of triangles and it was fine. My family devoured them lol.

  55. 2 stars
These are way too sweet for me with the extra sugar on top. The base recipe is good though—would reduce sugar next time and still keep the bake time.

  56. User avatar Eduardo Wisozk IV says:

    3 stars
I used frozen blueberries (didn’t thaw) and it worked, kinda. The crumb got a little soggy in one spot, but the vanilla and egg wash made it nice.

    1. User avatar nicolas.toy says:

      3 stars
Hmm frozen without thawing can be tricky—usually makes the crumb wet. Did you bake the full 20 mins? If the oven runs cool, that one spot could stay mushy.

    2. User avatar lizeth.okuneva40 says:

      4 stars
Good to know! I always worry about frozen berries, so the fact it still worked “kinda” makes me feel better. Next time maybe toss them in a little flour to reduce sogginess—did it stay cold in the dough?

  57. User avatar herbert.doyle2021 says:

    3 stars
The steps are clear, but I’m not sure about “knead lightly.” I panicked and overworked it a bit. Ended up denser than I wanted, though they were still good with tea.

  58. User avatar moshe.ebert35 says:

    5 stars
Pretty yummy! My toddler ate like half before they even cooled, lol. I did add a pinch of cinnamon and it worked surprisingly well.

    1. 5 stars
Aww toddler taste test is the best test 😄 Half before cooling is basically a compliment with evidence. Love that you tried cinnamon too!

    2. User avatar desmond.medhurst says:

      3 stars
Not sure about the cinnamon—sounds like it’d take away from the blueberry. But I guess if it “worked” you must’ve got the balance right. I’ll try a tiny pinch next time.

  59. User avatar Siona Atreides says:

    4 stars
“Bake 18-20 min” yeah sure… my kitchen clock laughed. Needed longer. Otherwise flavor is solid.

  60. User avatar Yooden Vranx says:

    2 stars
Scones are overrated. I feel like they’re just dry biscuits with attitude. These were a little too sweet for me, but the blueberries helped.

    1. User avatar denver.jast2 says:

      3 stars
Lol “dry biscuits with attitude” 😂 I think scones are hit or miss. Mine always end up too sweet too, so next time I’d cut the sugar down a bit or skip the extra topping. Blueberries are the saving grace though!

    2. 4 stars
I get what you mean—scones can totally go that “dry biscuit” route. But these having blueberries + a little sugar really helps. Did you chill the butter like the recipe says? That usually makes them more tender.

  61. User avatar anjanette.parisian says:

    3 stars
Not bad at all, but my dough was way too sticky even after dusting flour. I think my butter wasn’t cold enough because the crumb got a little dense.

  62. 2 stars
Mine spread a bit and the edges weren’t as flaky. I’m pretty sure my butter melted too fast because it was warm in my kitchen. Still tasty, just not picture-perfect.

  63. 5 stars
These scones are divine! The blueberries are bursting with flavor. Will definitely make again!

  64. User avatar bethann.zieme23 says:

    3 stars
These were good but my scones spread a bit and didn’t rise as much as I expected. I think my butter wasn’t cold enough even though I chilled it—400°F maybe runs hot in my oven.

    1. User avatar christoper.lockman10 says:

      5 stars
Yeah, that spread/flat situation is usually butter temp or dough handling. Even if you chilled it, if your kitchen is warm or the butter softened while you were cutting/dicing, the scones can lose lift. Next time try keeping the butter cubes very cold and chilling the whole cut dough on the tray for 10–15 min before baking.

    2. 5 stars
400°F can be a little aggressive depending on the oven. Mine runs hot too—if I don’t lower it to 390°F or even 375°F (and add 2–3 minutes), they spread. Worth checking your oven temp with an inexpensive thermometer.

  65. User avatar gail.homenick48 says:

    4 stars
I followed the steps pretty closely. The butter crumbs technique helped a lot. Mine weren’t super sweet, but that’s honestly a plus with the tart berries. Next time I’ll sprinkle more sugar.

  66. User avatar burton.gibson90 says:

    3 stars
Honestly, I didn’t trust the egg wash part. My dough felt too wet so I added extra flour—maybe that’s why they came out decent. Would make again, I guess.

  67. 3 stars
I followed everything but mine spread a little and the scones were more dense than I expected. Maybe my butter wasn’t cold enough? Still tasty though with jam.

    1. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

      5 stars
Hmm yeah, cold butter is usually the culprit. If the butter softened while mixing, the dough can spread more and come out denser. Next time try keeping everything (even the bowl) cold and don’t overwork after adding the buttermilk. Glad you still liked them with jam!

    2. User avatar virgilio.lind says:

      4 stars
Mine did that once and it was because I mixed too hard like… kneaded it a lot. I’d say just mix til it’s barely together and cut them straight out. Also blueberries can make them wetter—maybe toss berries lightly in a bit of flour?

  68. 3 stars
I think there’s too much sugar. My friend said they’re too sweet, but I liked them anyway.

  69. User avatar collin.schneider2001 says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but 1 cup blueberries felt like too much for my dough—mine got super wet. I added a little extra flour and it rescued it.

    1. User avatar travis.johns83 says:

      4 stars
Hmm I thought blueberries were supposed to “hydrate” the dough but not make it wet? Maybe your butter wasn’t cold enough or your berries were extra thawed/juicy. I’d try rolling them in a tiny bit of flour next time.

    2. User avatar liberal.hero says:

      5 stars
Totally get that—1 cup blueberries can make the dough feel way wetter, especially if they’re juicy. Glad you rescued it with extra flour!

  70. User avatar louise.rodriguez says:

    2 stars
These are mid. Like, decent breakfast snack, but 400°F seems too hot? They browned fast on the edges before the center was fully done for me.
