There’s something undeniably comforting about a flaky pastry filled with warm, juicy berries. Berry turnovers are one of those classic treats that feel both nostalgic and indulgent, whether you enjoy them in the morning with coffee or as an afternoon pick-me-up. Their golden crust, bursting with fruit, is a simple pleasure that never goes out of style.
These hand-held pastries are usually made with puff pastry or pie dough and filled with a mixture of berries like strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries. Sometimes sweetened with just a touch of sugar and maybe a bit of lemon zest, the filling is where the magic happens. It’s the contrast between the crisp exterior and the syrupy fruit inside that makes each bite so satisfying.
Berry turnovers are incredibly versatile. They can be rustic or refined, depending on how you prepare them. Dust them with powdered sugar for a more elegant presentation, or drizzle with a light glaze if you’re in the mood for something sweet and shiny. They’re great warm out of the oven, but also hold up beautifully when cooled, which makes them a perfect treat for brunches, potlucks, or picnics.
What’s also nice about turnovers is that they don’t require a lot of effort to make, especially if you use store-bought pastry dough. That means you can whip up a batch quickly whenever you want to take advantage of fresh berries in season. But even frozen berries work well in a pinch, making this a year-round option.
Pair a berry turnover with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for dessert, or serve it with your morning coffee for an indulgent breakfast. Either way, the combination of flaky crust and tart-sweet berries never disappoints.
Berry turnovers may look humble, but they bring big flavor. They strike the perfect balance between ease and elegance, making them a go-to favorite for bakers of all skill levels. Whether you keep them simple or dress them up, they always deliver that little extra bit of joy that only a good pastry can bring.

Ingredients
- 1 cup mixed berries such as blueberries, raspberries, strawberries
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch for thickening
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice freshly squeezed
- 1 package puff pastry thawed
- 1 egg lightly beaten, for egg wash
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a medium saucepan, combine the mixed berries, sugar, cornstarch, and lemon juice. Cook over medium heat until the mixture thickens and the berries have released their juices, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.
- Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface and cut into squares (about 4×4 inches).
- Place a spoonful of berry mixture in the center of each square. Fold the pastry over the filling to form a triangle and press the edges to seal.
- Brush the tops of the turnovers with the beaten egg and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed. Let cool on a wire rack before serving.

The instructions were a bit confusing. What does ‘medium heat’ mean anyway? Still tasted good tho.
5 stars! Made these for my kids and they gobbled them up. Easy recipe too! #momwin
Very good, but mine didn’t puff up as much as I expected. Maybe I rushed it? 🤷♀️
I wasn’t sure about using puff pastry. It seemed too fancy for me, but they turned out great! Who knew? 🤷♂️
I thought puff pastry was way too complicated too, but it’s actually pretty simple! Glad yours turned out well! 😄
Too sweet for my liking. The sugar kinda overpowered the berries. Nxt time I’ll use less sugar.
Yum! Perfect dessert for summer BBQs. Everyone loved them, even my picky cousin!
These berry turnovers are sooo delicious! I added some cinnamon to the berry mix for an extra kick. 5 stars!
Um, could you substitute the berries for like, apples? That’s what I have at home. 🤔
I tried using frozen berries and it was a disaster. Might need fresh ones next time.
Wasn’t sure about the cornstarch, but it really helped with the filling! Loved it.
Mmm… berries!
Wish I knew how to make pastry from scratch. This is cheating! 😜
Making pastry is tough! But puff pastry is a lifesaver. You can do it! 😄
These turned out amazing! So flaky and sweet. Definitely making again!
Is there a way to make them healthier? Like, can I not use sugar? Just curious.
You can definitely use alternatives like honey or maple syrup! They’re tasty and healthier than sugar.
Hmmm, not too sure about the lemon juice. It tastes a bit weird to me. Might try without it next time.
Yum! I can eat these every day. Used frozen berries and they turned out great.
Frozen berries work well! Glad they turned out good for you! 😋
I was skeptical about cooking the berries only 5–7 minutes, but it thickened just fine. Next time I’ll add a pinch of cinnamon because I like that vibe.
These turned out well, but I think I burnt them a lil bit. Oops!
I don’t get the cornstarch—like, why not just use jam? Anyway, the flavor was decent. Pastry was crispy on the edges but I’m not sure it was worth the effort.
Berry turnovers? You mean just some kinda pie? Whatever.
It’s not just a pie! Turnovers have a flaky crust and are filled with sweet berries. Give them a try!
These turnovers are amazing! I can’t believe how easy they were to make.
The berry mix cooked down nicely (5-7 min was about right). I let it cool longer and it was easier to seal. Would make again for sure.
These are the best, really quick and easy! Love love love! ❤️
Totally agree! They’re so delicious and perfect for brunch! ❤️🍴
I dunno, are they really that easy? I burned mine last time. 😅
Very easy to make! Just a little messy with the pastry but overall decent. I give it a solid 4. 👍
They look nice but I don’t think puff pastry is healthy. Can’t we make it with whole grain? Just saying!
I followed the recipe, but my filling was too runny. Any tips?
Yum! Simple and tasty. My kids helped, they loved it!
Yum! I added a bit of cinnamon for extra flavor. Game changer!
Turnovers? I thought they were just called turnovers like in my country. Haha who knew! They taste great tho!
Mine browned too quickly at 400°F. By 18 minutes they were already kinda dark, but I guess ovens vary. I’d lower to 375 next time.
Quick and easy! I love how flaky the pastry was. My kids gobbled them up in minutes.
Turnovers were good but I think they needed more sugar. They were a bit tart for my taste.
Wasted my ingredients, didn’t puff up at all! What a waste! 😡
Really easy, and the lemon juice made the filling pop. Mine leaked a little, but I think I didn’t seal the edges hard enough. Still delicious though.
I followed it exactly, but my puff pastry didn’t puff as much as I hoped. Maybe my oven runs cool? Still tasted great, just looked more like hand pies than turnovers.
I followed it and they look like the picture… kind of. My triangles opened a little. Maybe my edges weren’t pressed hard enough. Flavor is still good!
These are better than store-bought. The filling flavor is bright, and the texture is spot on. I served them warm and they were gone instantly.
Wow, that’s awesome—brighter filling sounds exactly right. I always struggle with sealing turnovers, so I’m glad yours came out perfect. Do you think they’re still good if I chill the filling first?
These turnovers are amazing! So easy to make and so delicious!
I can’t believe how easy these are! Gonna try making them this weekend!
I don’t get the hype. They tasted just okay and were a bit too sweet for my liking.
My pastry was too thick… what did I do wrong? Any tips?
These were absolutely delicious! My kids devoured them. Will definitely make again.
I’m so glad to hear that! My kids loved them too! These turnovers are a hit in our house. 😊
Why are there so many steps? Can’t they just be baked without prep?
I tried this but mine turned out soggy. What did I do wrong?
Maybe you didn’t bake them long enough? They need to be golden and puffed. Or did you overload on the filling? That can make them soggy!
OMG! I made these for my book club and they were a huge hit! Everyone wanted the recipe! Fantastic dish!
I was skeptical about 5–7 minutes for thickening, but it worked. I let mine go closer to 8 though, because my berries were extra juicy. Still perfect.
I don’t know… 5-7 min always seems too fast to me. I’d probably cook longer too, unless my berries are kinda dry. Also I forgot cornstarch once and it was a soup disaster 😅
Yes! Same here—5-7 minutes sounded short, but once the berries actually thicken it makes total sense. Nice call bumping to 8 for juicier fruit. 🍓
Quick and delicious! Perfect for brunch. Will make again.
These look amazing! I’m definitely trying this for my next family brunch.
I dunno, puff pastry seems hard to work with. Are they really that easy?
I had some troubles with the pastry. It kept breaking apart. Not sure what went wrong. Anyone else have that issue?
Just wow! Easy to make and they look fancy. Perfect for a brunch.
I made these turnovers for my family and they couldn’t stop eating! So good! 😍
Good but not great. Would rather have store bought.
I totally get that! Store-bought has its convenience, but I think homemade tastes much better. You should try adding some vanilla next time!
I didn’t have fresh berries so I used frozen. Still turned out great!
Great recipe but puff pastry is hard to handle if you’re not careful!
I followed it exactly but the puff pastry barely browned. Maybe my oven runs cold. The filling tasted great, just needs a bake time tweak.
I added cinnamon to the berry mix for a little twist. So good!
Do you really need the cornstarch? I left it out and they were pretty runny.
Yum! I made these for my kids and they loved them! ❤️
So glad to hear! These are a hit in my house too! 🍓
Pretty good, but my puff pastry didn’t puff as much as I expected. I think I overfilled the triangles and they might’ve leaked a bit. Still tasted amazing though.
This looks easy but I had a hard time with the pastry. Maybe I just need practice. 😅
Don’t worry! Pastry takes practice. I struggled too but now I love making it! Just keep trying. 😊
Honestly, I find puff pastry difficult too. Maybe try phyllo instead? 🤔
I think the amount of sugar is too much. Next time I’ll reduce it.
I followed the recipe but my turnovers turned out soggy. What did I do wrong?
I think the lemon juice measurement is tiny—1 tbsp felt like not enough for my batch. Flavor was okay though, and the puff pastry puffed well.
Good call—1 tbsp lemon juice does sound a bit timid. I usually bump it slightly, like 2 tbsp, especially if my berries are really sweet.
Easy enough for a weekday. Mine weren’t super golden on top, but they still puffed. Next time I’ll cool the filling more before filling the pastry to prevent any leaking.
Mine also took longer to brown, I think my oven runs cold. I baked like 30 mins and they still puffed but weren’t very golden. I’ll try cooling the filling more next time too.
Yes! Cooling the filling is such a big deal with turnovers. I usually wait until it’s more like jam texture before spooning—otherwise it melts the pastry edges and you get leaks.
Turnovers are fine, but puff pastry is just fancy bread, right? Not impressed.
These turned out so flaky and sweet-tart! I used frozen berries too and just cooked the filling a couple extra minutes. Loved the lemony kick. Will definitely make again.
These are amazing!!! I made them for my family and they vanished in minutes!
I think my puff pastry squares were too big—turnovers took longer than 25 minutes. Flavor is great though. Lemon + berries is a win.
Puff pastry is too hard to work with. I just use tortillas instead, lol.
I don’t get why people love puff pastry—like it’s good, but this recipe felt fussy for what you get. The filling tasted a bit like jam. Would prefer store-bought.
I dunno, I tried it and ended up burning them. Guess I suck at baking.
Not sure if I like the berry mix, can I use banana instead? Asking for a friend.
These came out so flaky and the berry filling was actually nice and thick. I used frozen berries and it still worked—just cooked the filling a minute or two longer. Yum!
I tried this and the pastry still tasted good, but my turnovers didn’t puff much. I think I sealed the edges wrong or didn’t chill the filling enough. Still ate them all tho 😅
Pretty good, but my filling was still a bit runny after cooking. I think I needed more time on the stove—5-7 minutes felt short for my berries.
The cooking time was off for me; they were still doughy after 25 mins. Bad recipe?
I had the same issue! Mine were doughy too. I think it might depend on your oven’s temperature. Maybe try baking them a bit longer next time?
These berry turnovers are sooo good!! I made them for my kids and they just loved them! Thank you!
They came out burnt, but I was watching a movie at the same time. My fault lol.
I think it needs more sugar… mine came out kinda sour.
Nah, using more sugar will just make it too sweet. Try using less lemon juice instead!
I actually thought the sugar was just right! Maybe you could add a bit of honey next time?
Absolutely delicious! Made these for a picnic and they were a huge hit. Will definitely make again!
I’m so glad to hear that! These turnovers are always a crowd-pleaser. What kind of berries did you use?
They look good, but aren’t turnovers supposed to be a bit flaky? Mine always come out soggy. Any tips?
So easy!
I tried this but mine leaked a lot 😅 I think I didn’t seal the edges good. Maybe I should cook the berry mix longer so it’s thicker?
Honestly I agree—these are way easier than I expected. The puff pastry makes it feel fancy with basically no work.
I didn’t have mixed berries, so I used frozen strawberries only. Filling was a bit runny at first, but after cooling it set up nicely. Good comfort food.
Made these tonight and they turned out super flaky! The lemon really brightens the berry filling—definitely making again for brunch.
Can you use other fruits? Like bananas? Because I don’t like berries.
Just okay, nothing special to be honest. I had higher hopes.
Why use cornstarch? Can berries just thicken by themselves?
Simple enough, but my turnovers leaked a bit even though I pressed the edges. Next time I’ll seal harder or chill the pastry before folding. Still tasted great.
Pretty good! I only had frozen berries, so I cooked them a few extra minutes until thick. Taste was nice, but mine browned a little too fast at 400°F—next time I’ll rotate the tray.
I followed the recipe and the filling leaked out anyway 😭. Maybe my egg wash is wrong or I didn’t press hard enough. Still tasted good—just messy.
These turned out AMAZING—so flaky and the berry filling actually thickened like it promised. I used frozen berries too and it still worked. 10/10 would make again!
These were a big hit at my family gathering! The kids loved them!
Are the berries really necessary? I don’t like them much. 😅
I skipped the sugar cuz I don’t like sweet things. A bit bland tho
I don’t like berries. Can I use apples instead? Anyone tried?
Apples? Really? That just sounds wrong. This is a berry recipe! Can’t you just try to like berries? 😒
I think you can definitely use apples! They might not be as juicy but should be fine. I would suggest adding some cinnamon to give it a nice flavor.
Not convinced. Puff pastry is already sweet and these need more berries/less sugar imo. Also 4×4 squares is kinda random—like how big is that really? Mine were a mess.
I get you—puff pastry can come off pretty sweet. I usually cut the sugar down a bit and add more berries (like extra fresh ones) so it’s more tart/jammy instead of dessert-y. And yeah, 4×4 is kind of arbitrary—mine end up closer to 3–4 inches depending on the sheet. I found it matters more that the squares are consistent so they seal right.
One star. Puff pastry is already hard enough and 400°F for 25 minutes burned the edges of mine. Might be user error but I’m not trying again.
Oh no—400°F can definitely overdo it if your pastry is thinner or your oven runs hot. I’d try checking them at ~15 minutes and pulling them as soon as they’re deep golden (not “brown around the edges”). Also, make sure the filling is fully cooled so it doesn’t melt/separate the pastry.
Yum!! First time making turnovers and it was easy and fun! 😍
These were alright. Not my fav but good for breakfast.
They were kinda bland tho. Maybe I shoulda added more sugar or something. Not worth the hype.
I actually loved these! The berries were so fresh and the puff pastry was flaky. Perfect for breakfast if you ask me!
These were easier than I thought! But I might try using cream cheese next time instead of just berries.
I followed the recipe but my filling was too watery. Should I cook the berries longer?
My triangles looked like little disasters (one side sealed, one side didn’t 😅). But they still tasted great. I’d try again and be more patient with sealing.
Aww I’ve totally had that—sometimes the seal just gives up. I’ve found chilling the filling helps a lot so it doesn’t make the pastry soggy. Also pressing the edges with a fork really “locks” it in. Still, yay that they tasted great!
Honestly sounds like mine too 😅 I always seal one side, then forget the other. I usually bake them anyway and they leak a bit but I don’t care—berry goo is delicious. Next time I’ll try to be more patient, but puff pastry be like… dramatic.
Not bad but kind of sweet for me. I used only 1/3 cup sugar and it was still tasty. Also, cornstarch never seemed to fully thicken my berries—maybe my berries were extra juicy?
Not gonna lie, mine came out pretty soggy on the bottom. I may have overfilled or my oven runs hot. Flavor was good, just the texture was off.
Ugh, I’m sorry! Soggy bottoms usually mean the filling was still a bit too juicy/warm when it went in, or the turnovers were crowded. I’ve found letting the berry mixture cool completely (and even chilling it) really helps. Also make sure they’re sealed well and don’t overload—like, a small spoonful, not a heap.
Mine did that once too and I thought it was the pastry, but my oven was running hot. Next time I dropped to 375°F and baked closer to 20 min, then let them cool on a rack instead of the tray. Flavor being good sounds like it’s just a bake/temp thing, imo.
These turned out so flaky and not too sweet! The lemon really wakes up the berry flavor. I might add a pinch of cinnamon next time just for fun.
I used frozen berries and they came out so well! Thanks for the recipe! 🤗
Not gonna lie, mine leaked a bit even though I pressed the edges. Next time I’ll seal harder and maybe chill the pastry first. Taste was great!
Love these! Made them with my grandma, they taste like childhood. ❤️🍓
That sounds like such a sweet memory! Can’t wait to try this recipe too! 😊
Took me forever to make these! My pastry didn’t puff up like yours. What a waste!
Yum! I think their the best turnovers ever, what a treat!
Can’t believe it’s just puff pastry and berries. What a cheat recipe! But I love it.
Nice recipe, but why the lemon juice? Isn’t that just for flavoring? Looks easy tho.
I dunno. Always thought lemon was just for flavor. Aren’t there better ways to make things taste good?
The lemon juice helps balance the sweetness of the berries! It’s not just for flavor, it adds some acidity that makes the taste pop. Easy indeed!
400°F seems too high for pastries, I lowered mine to 375 and baked longer. They were still tasty but not as golden. If you want dramatic browning, keep the original temp.
Ok wow. 400°F for 25 minutes and they puffed perfectly. I’m stealing this recipe for holiday brunch. Thanks!
