There’s something undeniably comforting about a flaky pastry filled with warm, juicy berries. Berry turnovers are one of those classic treats that feel both nostalgic and indulgent, whether you enjoy them in the morning with coffee or as an afternoon pick-me-up. Their golden crust, bursting with fruit, is a simple pleasure that never goes out of style.
These hand-held pastries are usually made with puff pastry or pie dough and filled with a mixture of berries like strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries. Sometimes sweetened with just a touch of sugar and maybe a bit of lemon zest, the filling is where the magic happens. It’s the contrast between the crisp exterior and the syrupy fruit inside that makes each bite so satisfying.
Berry turnovers are incredibly versatile. They can be rustic or refined, depending on how you prepare them. Dust them with powdered sugar for a more elegant presentation, or drizzle with a light glaze if you’re in the mood for something sweet and shiny. They’re great warm out of the oven, but also hold up beautifully when cooled, which makes them a perfect treat for brunches, potlucks, or picnics.
What’s also nice about turnovers is that they don’t require a lot of effort to make, especially if you use store-bought pastry dough. That means you can whip up a batch quickly whenever you want to take advantage of fresh berries in season. But even frozen berries work well in a pinch, making this a year-round option.
Pair a berry turnover with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for dessert, or serve it with your morning coffee for an indulgent breakfast. Either way, the combination of flaky crust and tart-sweet berries never disappoints.
Berry turnovers may look humble, but they bring big flavor. They strike the perfect balance between ease and elegance, making them a go-to favorite for bakers of all skill levels. Whether you keep them simple or dress them up, they always deliver that little extra bit of joy that only a good pastry can bring.

Ingredients
- 1 cup mixed berries such as blueberries, raspberries, strawberries
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch for thickening
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice freshly squeezed
- 1 package puff pastry thawed
- 1 egg lightly beaten, for egg wash
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a medium saucepan, combine the mixed berries, sugar, cornstarch, and lemon juice. Cook over medium heat until the mixture thickens and the berries have released their juices, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.
- Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface and cut into squares (about 4×4 inches).
- Place a spoonful of berry mixture in the center of each square. Fold the pastry over the filling to form a triangle and press the edges to seal.
- Brush the tops of the turnovers with the beaten egg and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed. Let cool on a wire rack before serving.

The instructions were a bit confusing. What does ‘medium heat’ mean anyway? Still tasted good tho.
5 stars! Made these for my kids and they gobbled them up. Easy recipe too! #momwin
Very good, but mine didn’t puff up as much as I expected. Maybe I rushed it? 🤷♀️
I wasn’t sure about using puff pastry. It seemed too fancy for me, but they turned out great! Who knew? 🤷♂️
I thought puff pastry was way too complicated too, but it’s actually pretty simple! Glad yours turned out well! 😄
Too sweet for my liking. The sugar kinda overpowered the berries. Nxt time I’ll use less sugar.
Yum! Perfect dessert for summer BBQs. Everyone loved them, even my picky cousin!
These berry turnovers are sooo delicious! I added some cinnamon to the berry mix for an extra kick. 5 stars!
Um, could you substitute the berries for like, apples? That’s what I have at home. 🤔
I tried using frozen berries and it was a disaster. Might need fresh ones next time.
Wasn’t sure about the cornstarch, but it really helped with the filling! Loved it.
Is there a way to make them healthier? Like, can I not use sugar? Just curious.
You can definitely use alternatives like honey or maple syrup! They’re tasty and healthier than sugar.
Hmmm, not too sure about the lemon juice. It tastes a bit weird to me. Might try without it next time.
These turned out well, but I think I burnt them a lil bit. Oops!
Berry turnovers? You mean just some kinda pie? Whatever.
It’s not just a pie! Turnovers have a flaky crust and are filled with sweet berries. Give them a try!
These turnovers are amazing! I can’t believe how easy they were to make.
These are the best, really quick and easy! Love love love! ❤️
Totally agree! They’re so delicious and perfect for brunch! ❤️🍴
I dunno, are they really that easy? I burned mine last time. 😅
Very easy to make! Just a little messy with the pastry but overall decent. I give it a solid 4. 👍
They look nice but I don’t think puff pastry is healthy. Can’t we make it with whole grain? Just saying!
Yum! Simple and tasty. My kids helped, they loved it!
Yum! I added a bit of cinnamon for extra flavor. Game changer!
Turnovers? I thought they were just called turnovers like in my country. Haha who knew! They taste great tho!
Turnovers were good but I think they needed more sugar. They were a bit tart for my taste.
Wasted my ingredients, didn’t puff up at all! What a waste! 😡
My pastry was too thick… what did I do wrong? Any tips?
These were absolutely delicious! My kids devoured them. Will definitely make again.
I’m so glad to hear that! My kids loved them too! These turnovers are a hit in our house. 😊
I tried this but mine turned out soggy. What did I do wrong?
Maybe you didn’t bake them long enough? They need to be golden and puffed. Or did you overload on the filling? That can make them soggy!
OMG! I made these for my book club and they were a huge hit! Everyone wanted the recipe! Fantastic dish!
Quick and delicious! Perfect for brunch. Will make again.
These look amazing! I’m definitely trying this for my next family brunch.
I dunno, puff pastry seems hard to work with. Are they really that easy?
I had some troubles with the pastry. It kept breaking apart. Not sure what went wrong. Anyone else have that issue?
Just wow! Easy to make and they look fancy. Perfect for a brunch.
I made these turnovers for my family and they couldn’t stop eating! So good! 😍
Good but not great. Would rather have store bought.
I totally get that! Store-bought has its convenience, but I think homemade tastes much better. You should try adding some vanilla next time!
I didn’t have fresh berries so I used frozen. Still turned out great!
Great recipe but puff pastry is hard to handle if you’re not careful!
Yum! I made these for my kids and they loved them! ❤️
So glad to hear! These are a hit in my house too! 🍓
Turnovers are fine, but puff pastry is just fancy bread, right? Not impressed.
These are amazing!!! I made them for my family and they vanished in minutes!
I dunno, I tried it and ended up burning them. Guess I suck at baking.
The cooking time was off for me; they were still doughy after 25 mins. Bad recipe?
I had the same issue! Mine were doughy too. I think it might depend on your oven’s temperature. Maybe try baking them a bit longer next time?
These berry turnovers are sooo good!! I made them for my kids and they just loved them! Thank you!
I think it needs more sugar… mine came out kinda sour.
Nah, using more sugar will just make it too sweet. Try using less lemon juice instead!
I actually thought the sugar was just right! Maybe you could add a bit of honey next time?
Just okay, nothing special to be honest. I had higher hopes.
Why use cornstarch? Can berries just thicken by themselves?
I don’t like berries. Can I use apples instead? Anyone tried?
Apples? Really? That just sounds wrong. This is a berry recipe! Can’t you just try to like berries? 😒
I think you can definitely use apples! They might not be as juicy but should be fine. I would suggest adding some cinnamon to give it a nice flavor.
