Berry French Toast Casserole

June 19, 2025

Berry French Toast Casserole is a delightful twist on the classic French breakfast dish, combining the rich flavors of custard-soaked bread with the sweet-tart burst of fresh berries. This baked casserole is the perfect make-ahead option for brunch, holidays, or any time you want a stress-free morning meal that still feels indulgent.

The foundation of this French toast casserole begins with thick slices of day-old bread—brioche, challah, or French bread work beautifully—soaked in a creamy mixture of eggs, milk, vanilla, and a touch of cinnamon. Once the bread is fully coated, it’s layered in a baking dish with a medley of berries such as blueberries, raspberries, and sliced strawberries. The berries add both color and a fresh, juicy contrast to the richness of the toast.

What sets this dish apart from traditional French toast is the baking process. Instead of pan-frying individual slices, the casserole is assembled ahead of time and baked all at once, making it an excellent choice for feeding a crowd. As it bakes, the bread puffs up slightly and the berries soften, creating a beautifully textured dish that’s crispy on top and soft inside.

Before serving, a light dusting of powdered sugar and a drizzle of maple syrup or berry compote takes this French-inspired casserole to the next level. You can also add a dollop of whipped cream or a spoonful of Greek yogurt for an extra touch of decadence.

With its comforting warmth and vibrant flavor, Berry French Toast Casserole brings the charm of a French café breakfast to your own kitchen. It’s easy to prepare, customizable, and guaranteed to impress anyone who sits at your table. Whether it’s a holiday morning or a weekend treat, this French toast casserole is a delicious way to start the day.

Why do we need heavy cream and milk? Seems excessive. I just used milk and it was fine.

  6. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

I found this recipe too rich for my taste. Maybe less cream next time? Not a fan of the consistency.

    1. User avatar edythe.bogan2010 says:

      4 stars
I think you might just be sensitive to cream! I loved it, but maybe try using more milk next time instead? It might balance it out! 😊

This recipe is amazing! My kids loved it and it was super easy to make. A real breakfast treat!

Looks good but my bread got too soggy. 😕 Maybe I let it soak too long?

  9. 5 stars
Yum yum! Perfect for holiday brunches, me and my family devoured it.

  10. 4 stars
I didn’t have berries so I used bananas instead. Still turned out great!

  11. User avatar brandy.bailey8 says:

I don’t know… I followed the recipe exactly, but it turned out soggy. Maybe my bread was too fresh? Not sure I would try again.

    1. User avatar timothy.fritsch says:

      4 stars
Soggy bread can happen if it soaks too long, or if the bread is too fresh! Try letting it sit a little less next time. Don’t give up!

  12. User avatar norma.bogan says:

    3 stars
Why do you use 6 eggs? That sounds like too many to me. I usually do 3. Gonna try my way instead.

    1. User avatar joaquin.hills says:

      3 stars
3 eggs seem too little for me. You gotta balance it right, or it’ll be dry. 😕

    2. 4 stars
I think the 6 eggs make it richer! But hey, do what suits you best! 🥚

  13. User avatar jed.reilly73 says:

Pls tell me if I can use just regular bread instead of fancyyy French bread? I have white bread at home.

    1. User avatar Dominic Vernius says:

      4 stars
Sure! White bread works too, just won’t taste as fancy. It’s food, it’s fine! 🤷‍♀️

    2. User avatar jeff.mante2008 says:

      3 stars
You can use regular bread, but it might get mushy! French bread is drier and better for this kind of dish. Just saying!

  14. User avatar greta.zieme20 says:

    5 stars
Best breakfast ever! I used all the berries I had and even added some nuts. Totally worth the calories! Yum!

Sounds good, but why do you need heavy cream? Isn’t that just extra calories? I bet it could work with just milk.

    1. User avatar treva.carter says:

  28. User avatar oralee.lind41 says:

    4 stars
Delicious! I subbed yogurt for the heavy cream and it turned out great. Will make again for sure.

  29. 3 stars

    1. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

      4 stars
I thought it was sweet enough. Maybe try adding more sugar next time?

  32. 2 stars
Not my fave. The texture was kinda weird for me. I prefer regular French toast I guess.

  33. 5 stars
    WOW!!! I gave it a 5 cause I LOVE french toast! 🙂

  34. User avatar Tom Bombadil says:

    3 stars
Why’d you put cream in it? Isn’t that unnecessary? Seems a bit extra to me.

  35. User avatar leon.nader says:

    4 stars
I thought it would be hard to make, but it’s actually quite easy! Just don’t forget the soaking time.

  36. User avatar darcel.cruickshank2 says:

    2 stars
Is powdered sugar really necessary? Seems likes an unnecessary step to me.

  37. 3 stars
What’s with the heavy cream? I just used milk. Can’t taste the difference.

    1. User avatar geoWizard says:

      2 stars
But do you really need the cream? Just feels like a waste. Milk works just fine!

    2. User avatar emelia.weimann2001 says:

      5 stars
I think heavy cream adds richness that milk just can’t match. It makes everything taste better! 🤤

  38. User avatar Mora Rohan DDS says:

    4 stars
Easy recipe, but I used bread slices instead of cubes. Still worked ok!

  39. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

    3 stars
It was okay, but I think I used too much cinnamon. Maybe a little less next time. 🤔

  40. User avatar terrance.oconnell43 says:

    3 stars
It was a bit soggy for my taste. Maybe less cream next time?

So good! My kids couldn’t get enough. I added chocolate chips for fun, and they loved it! Yum!

  43. User avatar Reg Nullify says:

    1 star
This is a waste of good eggs! Just make normal french toast. Don’t get the hype.

  44. 1 star
Why do you bother baking it? Just eat the bread soaked in egg mixture!!!

  45. 4 stars
Why do you have to let it sit for 30 mins? Can’t we just bake it right away? 🤷

  46. User avatar nichol.lemke63 says:

    5 stars
This is such an easy crowd-pleaser. I love that you can prep it ahead and then bake—breakfast for lazy people like me 😅

  47. User avatar Roosevelt Beatty says:

    4 stars
powdered sugar for dusting? I didn’t have any so I used cinnamon sugar and honestly it was fine. Maybe not the same vibe but still tasty.

  48. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

    5 stars
This was a hit at our brunch! Everyone loved it! 😍

    1. 5 stars
That sounds amazing! 🍓 I can’t wait to try it for my next gathering. Thanks for sharing!

    2. 2 stars
Is this really that good? I tried a similar recipe and it was a disaster! 😣

    5 stars
My kids loved it! They finished the whole dish in one sitting! ❤️

    2. User avatar Falmer Shaman says:

      3 stars
Looks good, but isn’t it a bit too rich? I don’t know about all that cream and sugar!

  53. User avatar odette.grant27 says:

    2 stars
I don’t know… It seemed too eggy for me. 🤔

  54. 4 stars
The recipe is pretty simple, but I have a question: can I use different berries? What if I use bananas instead?

    1. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

      3 stars
I don’t think bananas will work well in this recipe, it might get too mushy. Just use the berries like the recipe says!

    2. User avatar kasey.macejkovic9 says:

      4 stars
You can definitely use different berries! Bananas might be tricky though, they don’t have the same juicy flavor as berries. I’d stick to berries if I were you!

  55. User avatar drew.spencer2008 says:

    5 stars
Quick and tasty! Love how the berries burst with flavor. Would add more next time.

  56. User avatar peggy.harris says:

I just threw all the ingredients together without waiting. It still came out great!

  57. User avatar alfredia.witting says:

    2 stars
I dunno, I thought it was gonna be sweet, but it was too plain. Didn’t taste much like berries.

  58. User avatar Deep Thought says:

This looks amazing! I can’t wait to try it for brunch this weekend! 🍓

    1. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

  59. User avatar bill.corwin57 says:

Eggs and bread? Not a fan of either tbh. Thought I’d give it a try but really didn’t like it. 🤮

  60. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

    5 stars
    Very berry good! 🍓🍇

  61. 4 stars
I’m skeptical about casseroles being “French toast” but wow—this actually worked. The texture was more like bread pudding in a good way. I dusted powdered sugar and it looked fancy for basically no effort.

  62. User avatar bridget.becker says:

    5 stars
This was delicious! My whole family loved it. The berries added a nice touch! Will definitely make again. 😍

    1. User avatar seth.hermann78 says:

      5 stars
So glad you enjoyed it! The berries really do add something special, don’t they? 🍓

    2. User avatar hilario.turcotte20 says:

      3 stars
I mean, it looks good and all, but I think it’s too sweet for my taste. Can you tone down the sugar next time?

  63. User avatar nichelle.renner says:

    2 stars
I thought this was too sweet. 1/4 cup sugar AND maple syrup? Nah, too much for me. I’ll stick to plain French toast.

  64. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    5 stars
Made this for brunch and it was gone way too fast. The soaked bread + berries was such a good combo, and the cinnamon smell in the oven is unreal. I used a little extra maple syrup and it stayed perfectly custardy.

    1. 5 stars
Yes!! I made this for brunch too and it disappeared so fast 😭 The custardy middle is legit, and that cinnamon smell is everything. I also did a little extra maple—no regrets.

    2. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

      3 stars
Sounds good, but I’m confused about the “soaked bread + berries” part—did you still let it sit the full 30 minutes? I tried a similar one and mine came out too eggy, like a bread pudding that won’t set.

  65. User avatar bobbie.thiel89 says:

    4 stars
Can you use any berries? I only have blackberries. Do you think it will work?

  66. User avatar adalberto.mclaughlin56 says:

    1 star
Instructions were confusing and I burned it. Now I’m just sad. 🙁

    1. User avatar jane.howe4 says:

      4 stars
I’m really sorry to hear that! The instructions can be tricky sometimes. Maybe you can give it another shot? Don’t give up!

  67. User avatar mario.fisher79 says:

    5 stars
    Yummy! 😋

  68. User avatar iona.willms55 says:

    2 stars
Is it really necessary to soak the bread for 30 mins? I might just skip that.

    1. 3 stars
Nah, you can totally skip it if you want. Just make sure the bread is stale or it won’t hold the mix well. But it might not taste as rich..

    2. User avatar Uh Shenlong says:

      5 stars
I think soaking is super important! It helps the bread absorb all those yummy flavors. You might end up with a dry casserole if you skip it.

  69. 5 stars
SO GOOD!!! 😍 Kids can’t get enough! Easy to make and always impresses guests. Thank you for sharing!

  70. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

    3 stars
The recipe is good, but my maple syrup soaked through and kinda drowned the berries. Also I forgot to grease my dish and it stuck a little (my bad). Taste was still yummy, just messy.

  71. 5 stars
About time I found a recipe that my picky eater likes! Success!

  72. User avatar hermelinda.wintheiser says:

    1 star
I think french toast should be cooked differently. This just seems wrong to me. 🤷‍♂️

    1. 3 stars
This seems easy, but french toast is always better when made in a pan, right? Oven baking can make it too soggy. 🤔

    2. 5 stars
I get what you mean! Everyone has their own way of making french toast, but I think this recipe sounds delicious anyway. Trying it out! 😊

  73. User avatar russ.hickle2011 says:

    5 stars
Honestly this is my new favorite. The eggs/milk ratio makes it taste like actual French toast, not just dessert bread. Everyone asked for seconds.

    1. 3 stars
Huh. I tried something similar once but I think I used “more milk” so it got soggy. Would’ve helped if you said how long to soak longer than 30 min—mine didn’t brown much at 45 min, maybe my oven runs cold. Still tasted okay though.

    2. User avatar billye.cronin1980 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—my batch tasted legit like French toast, not just sweet bread. The custard soak makes all the difference. I added a little extra cinnamon and it was gone fast 😄

  74. User avatar kareem.skiles1981 says:

    2 stars
How many plates do you need for this?! Seems too much work. I stick to cereal.

    1. User avatar Scott Anderson says:

      4 stars
I totally get you! Cooking can be a lot of hassle. But this casserole looks so tasty! Maybe just one dish to clean?

  75. User avatar scot.medhurst10 says:

    2 stars
I did 400°F because I panic when recipes say 350, lol. Outside was golden but inside wasn’t set. Learn from my mistake—follow the temp.

  76. User avatar tristan.torp says:

    2 stars
1 loaf French bread sounds like a lot—i guess it depends. I had to add extra eggs/milk because mine seemed dry. Still tasty though.

  77. 3 stars
I didn’t have vanilla so I used chocolate extract, it was ok I guess. Thumbs up for effort!

  78. User avatar Grìma Wormtongue says:

    5 stars
Berry good recipe! Will make again. Next time I might use bananas too!

  79. User avatar marcelle.skiles says:

    3 stars
I think its okay, but I ain’t making it again. It was a bit to mushy for me.

  80. User avatar Frodo Baggins says:

    3 stars
Its ok, but can be better. Maybe add more cinnamon or nutmeg? Just an idea. Also, why dust with powdered sugar? It’s not necessary.

  81. 5 stars
This was a huge hit at our family brunch! So delicious and easy to make. Will definitely make again!

  82. User avatar anthony.bergnaum19 says:

    3 stars
The flavor is nice, but I found it a little too sweet with the maple syrup + sugar + powdered sugar. I’d cut the sugar down and see.

  83. 2 stars
Eh. Too sweet for me and the cinnamon felt kinda strong. Also 6 eggs for one loaf seems like a lot—my version was kinda eggy. Wouldn’t remake unless I tweak it a lot.

    1. User avatar agustin.sipes27 says:

      4 stars
Totally get that—when cinnamon is the loudest flavor, everything else gets drowned out. I’d cut it to 1/4–1/3 tsp and maybe add more vanilla or a touch of salt.

  84. User avatar sonny.johns80 says:

    5 stars
Perfect for lazy Sundays! Made it with fresh strawberries and blueberries, soooo good!

  85. User avatar Samuel Volkman says:

    1 star
Baked it for 60 mins and it was still soggy in the middle! What did I do wrong? 😩

  86. User avatar toney.baumbach1971 says:

    4 stars
Pretty tasty, but 1 cup berries felt like too little for a whole loaf of bread. Next time I’ll double the berries or add a berry jam swirl.

  87. 3 stars
Tried it with frozen berries (didn’t thaw) and it still worked, but I think next time I’ll thaw so it doesn’t get watery. Flavor was still great though.

  88. User avatar domingo.okuneva60 says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, the texture was kinda soggy at first. I think my bread cubes were too big and I didn’t soak long enough. After baking a few extra minutes it improved.

  89. 2 stars
I followed the recipe exactly and it came out kind of soggy. Could be my bread? I used regular sandwich bread and I think that was the issue.

  90. User avatar elinor.kozey31 says:

    4 stars
Simple but taste good! My kids loved it. They asked for seconds. Yay for breakfasts!

  91. User avatar Jitan Sa'mi says:

    3 stars
I’m not sure about using heavy cream. Seems like too much fat for a breakfast dish.

  92. User avatar laverne.ryan84 says:

    5 stars
I love the cinnamon in this! Really adds a lot of flavor 🥰. My new favorite breakfast dish!

  93. User avatar Super Saiyan Gohan says:

    4 stars
Great combination of flavors! My kids devoured it. Will make it again!

  94. User avatar Eccentrica Gallumbits says:

    5 stars
My kids loved it! Very easy to make. Gonna make it again! 😍

  95. 4 stars
Yummy! But I accidentally added way too much sugar. Oops! Still a hit, though.

    1. User avatar felton.weimann says:

      5 stars
Too much sugar? That’s a classic mistake! But hey, it sounds like you still made it work. Life’s all about those happy accidents, right?

  96. 5 stars
I’m not usually a casserole person, but this was actually comfort-food heaven. The bread soaked nicely after the 30 minutes.

    1. User avatar hildred.cremin says:

      5 stars
Right?! The 30 minutes makes all the difference—the bread actually soaks instead of staying dry. Comfort-food heaven is exactly it.

    2. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

      3 stars
I’m skeptical about the bread soaking… 30 minutes sounds short, unless your bread is really fresh? I might soak longer like an hour. Also, I used frozen berries and they seemed watery but still tasty.

Nah, I don’t think this is for me. Too many eggs and cream. I prefer my french toast the old fashioned way.

This tasted really good, but mine came out a bit wet in the center even after 50 minutes. Next time I’ll probably cube the bread a little smaller and let it soak longer than 30 mins. Still worth making though!

My center wasn’t set at 45 minutes, so I baked like 10 more. Not a big deal, just keep an eye on it because ovens vary.

I don’t understand why it needs heavy cream *and* milk. Feels overkill. But I tried it anyway—came out okay. Would try a lighter version next time.

This was a hit at our brunch! Everyone loved it! 🍞🍓

Made this for brunch and it came out super custardy in the middle—golden top and juicy berries. The cinnamon with maple syrup is a great combo. Will definitely do again.

The instructions were easy, but my bread cubes got a little soggy on the edges. I used a smaller loaf though, so maybe that’s why.

Hmm I think 30 minutes might be too long if your cubes are small. I’d cut it to like 15-20 and cover with foil first 20-25 min so the top doesn’t dry out but the middle sets. Also maple syrup drizzled a lot can make edges soggy.

    2. User avatar mary.glover says:

      4 stars
That makes sense—smaller loaf/cubes usually soak unevenly. Next time try leaving the bread cubes slightly drier (or cube them bigger) so they don’t go mushy at the edges.

This berry french toast casserole was a hit at our brunch! Everyone loved it. Will definitely make again!

Glad to hear it was a hit! I made it last week, too, and everyone couldn’t stop raving about it. The maple syrup really makes a difference!

Made this for brunch and it was a total hit—super custardy and the berries stayed juicy. The maple syrup really pulls everything together. Will definitely repeat.

Made this for brunch too and I’m totally with you—so custardy and the berries didn’t turn to mush. I used a little extra maple syrup and it was perfect.

Hmm, mine was tasty but it didn’t get as custardy as yours. I think I may have under-soaked the bread—next time I’ll let it sit closer to an hour. Also my bake time was more like 55 min.

The flavors are nice, but mine was a little bland until I added extra vanilla. Also I used frozen berries and they bled a lot—still good though, just more messy.

I’m glad it turned out good for you! Mine usually needs a little vanilla too—maybe my vanilla’s weaker. Frozen berries bleeding is so real though. Did you thaw them first or just toss straight in?

    2. User avatar Sand-Dial says:

      3 stars
Kinda bland at first, huh? I don’t trust casseroles with berries because they always turn watery. Next time you should use less milk or drain the berries. But hey—extra vanilla works, ig 😅

I was a bit skeptical at first, but this turned out great! I didn’t have heavy cream so used half and half. Still delicious!

Really tasty, though I think 45 minutes was a bit short for my oven—next time I’ll check closer to 50-55. Still, the golden top was gorgeous.

I think 45 is plenty 😅 Mine was done in 40 and got crispy on top. Also, I used frozen berries (still fine) and I didn’t even rest it the full 30 min—oops. Yours still sounds super good though.

    2. 5 stars
Glad you liked it! I agree ovens vary—mine runs a little cool too, so 50-55 works great if the center still looks jiggly at 45. Love that golden top description 😄

Too much sugar for my taste. I prefer it with less sweetness. Can it be altered?

I get that! It does seem like a lot of time for breakfast. Can’t we just grab some toast? 😂

But once in a while, a special breakfast is worth it! This casserole looks really delicious. 😍

Mine came out a tiny bit soggy in the middle, but I think I under-baked. Also I used sour cherries instead of mixed berries (still worked).

I’m not usually a casserole person, but this one smelled amazing while baking. Texture was like French toast without the flipping drama.

I was skeptical about soaking the bread for 30 mins. It turned out soggy. Next time I’ll try less time.

Yeah, I had the same issue! I think 20 mins might be better. Soggy bread is no fun. 🤷‍♂️

I’m skeptical about cooking French bread cubes—like wouldn’t they just dry out? But surprisingly it turned out soft, so… kudos.

    1. User avatar MrsLucyG says:

      5 stars
I get your skepticism—French bread can definitely go stale fast. But letting it sit the full 30 minutes really helps the cubes soak up the custard so they don’t just dry out. Glad it worked for you!

Not sure about this one. The bread didn’t soak enough, it was too dry for me.

  116. User avatar Blue Dartwing says:

Not bad, but I don’t get the hype. The texture was kinda eggy (maybe I didn’t let it soak long enough). Still, it disappeared fast.

  117. User avatar Reg Nullify says:

The soak for 30 minutes matters! I rushed it once and the bread tasted a bit dry. Once I let it sit, it turned out way better.

  118. User avatar Miss Andreas O'Conner says:

I was worried 45-50 minutes would be too long for French bread cubes, but it was perfect. Next time I’ll let it sit a bit longer than 30 min for even more soak.

I used frozen berries because that’s all I had, and it turned out great! Just thaw them first.

My berries kinda sank, but I just stirred the syrup into the slices and it was fine. Also I forgot the cinnamon once… don’t do that 😅
