Stained Glass Gelatin Cake

December 12, 2024

Stained Glass Gelatin Cake is a show-stopping dessert that’s as fun to make as it is to eat. With vibrant layers of colorful gelatin embedded in a creamy base, it’s like a work of art on your plate. This whimsical cake is perfect for celebrations, potlucks, or when you want to add a bit of flair to your dessert table.

The beauty of Stained Glass Gelatin Cake lies in the colorful gelatin pieces that create a stained-glass effect. The gelatin is prepared in multiple colors, usually red, green, yellow, and blue, and set into individual layers in a baking dish. Once the gelatin has firmed up, it’s cut into cubes and suspended within a creamy, fluffy filling that gives the cake its signature smooth texture.

To make this dessert, you’ll start by preparing the gelatin layers. Choose your favorite gelatin flavors and dissolve them in boiling water. Pour each flavor into separate containers and refrigerate them until they are fully set. After the gelatin has firmed, cut it into small cubes, keeping the colors separated. The more vibrant the colors, the more stunning the final effect will be.

The next step is creating the creamy base. Typically, the filling is made from a combination of sweetened condensed milk, whipped cream, and gelatin to help it set. The creamy mixture is poured over the colorful gelatin cubes in a baking dish, allowing the colorful pieces to be evenly distributed throughout. Once the base has set, the result is a beautiful, colorful dessert that looks as though it could be a stained-glass window.

This cake is as much a visual treat as it is a delicious one. Each bite offers a refreshing, fruity burst from the gelatin and a creamy richness from the filling, making for a perfect balance of textures. It’s a dessert that’s sure to be a conversation starter, and its vibrant colors make it an eye-catching addition to any table.

Stained Glass Gelatin Cake is not only a delicious dessert, but it’s also a fun and creative way to impress your guests with your baking skills. Whether you’re making it for a holiday, a birthday, or just because, this cake is a delightful treat that’s guaranteed to bring a smile to anyone who sees it.

What is Stained Glass Gelatin Cake?

It’s a colorful, eye-catching dessert made with cubes of brightly flavored gelatin suspended in a creamy, milky base. The mosaic-like appearance gives it the name “stained glass” or “broken glass” gelatin cake.

Is it hard to make Stained Glass Gelatin Cake?

Not at all! It just takes a bit of patience. First, make several flavors/colors of gelatin, let them set, cut into cubes, and mix them into a sweet gelatin and condensed milk mixture. Pour into a mold and chill until set again.

What does it taste like?

It’s light, fruity, and creamy! The different gelatin flavors add fun bursts of fruitiness, while the creamy base keeps it smooth and balanced.

Any tips for clean slices?

Use a sharp knife dipped in hot water and wiped clean between cuts to get neat, glass-like edges.

Easy and delicious! Made it for a potluck and everyone asked for the recipe!

  2. User avatar Jana Dietrich says:

So easy to make! I didn’t have all the flavors but used what I had and it still turned out great.

  3. User avatar eunice.stehr39 says:

    3 stars
I tried it but my cubes started to melt into the creamy layer. Maybe my gelatin wasn’t firm enough or I mixed too vigorously. Still tasted good though—just not as pretty.

Who knew gelatins could look so cool? I want to try it for my next family gathering.

  5. User avatar liberal.hero says:

I think this recipe is wrong. Shouldn’t you add sugar somewhere?!

    1. 5 stars
I think it tastes great as it is! The sweetened condensed milk adds plenty of sweetness already. No need for extra sugar.

    2. User avatar antonetta.hayes says:

      3 stars
I dunno. I mean sugar is usually in desserts, right? Just feels odd to me without more sugar. 🤔

  6. User avatar darnell.casper says:

    4 stars
Can you make it without the condensed milk? I’m lactose intolerant. 😩

  7. User avatar Saruman the White says:

    4 stars
Easy to make! Just remember to cut the gelatin into small cubes. It can be a little messy but totally worth it!

    1. User avatar terrence.lockman says:

      5 stars
I made it last weekend and it turned out great! It’s super pretty too!

  8. User avatar jack.west12 says:

    Meh.

  9. 2 stars
It looks pretty but was a pain to do. Took me forever to cut those jellies. Not sure it was worth it.

  10. User avatar casandra.morar2002 says:

    5 stars
Yummm! So colorful! I love desserts that look good. Will try this 😋

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree! This looks so pretty! Can’t wait to make it for my party! 🎉

    2. User avatar claretha.gaylord2008 says:

      3 stars
Looks nice but is it really gonna taste good? I don’t know about mixing all those flavors…

  11. User avatar annette.fisher17 says:

    2 stars
Is it really necessary to wait for so long? Seems like a lot of waiting for just some jelly.

  12. User avatar kina.kub24 says:

    3 stars
Tastes good but too many steps for me. Simple is better!

  13. User avatar lula.kohler1957 says:

    2 stars
I don’t know… Seems like a lot of work for just gelatin. Not sure if I’ll try it.

  14. User avatar lisandra.hickle42 says:

    2 stars
Could you add fruit? Like real strawberries? I feel like the gelatin alone isn’t enough and it might be too artificial.

  15. User avatar humberto.leffler says:

    5 stars
This cake is so pretty! I made it for my daughter’s birthday and she loved it! 🎉

  16. User avatar carmen.wisozk1977 says:

This is kinda like stained glass but edible. 10/10 for looks. Taste was ok for me, though a bit too sweet.

    1. User avatar Dr. Darrick Stiedemann says:

      4 stars
Ok but… if it’s “a bit too sweet,” wouldn’t that mean you used the wrong gelatin flavors? Like strawberry gelatin is already sugary. Maybe next time use less sweet packs or do half? Just a thought.

    2. 5 stars
I love that description—stained glass but edible is exactly what it looks like! The condensed milk sweetness can definitely be intense, though. Did you try using less condensed milk or swapping in less sugary flavors?

  17. User avatar shin.dibbert says:

    4 stars
Okay but who has time to do separate gelatin colors one by one 😅. Still, if you’re hosting, it’s totally worth the effort.

    1. User avatar aaron.barton says:

      5 stars
Totally get it 😅 but if you do it assembly-line style (label the containers, set timers), it’s not too bad. The finished cake looks way more “wow” than the effort.

    2. User avatar jesse.huel2020 says:

      2 stars
I mean… I tried layered jello once and it turned into one big blob lol. Separate colors sounds cute, but who has patience when it’s like 90° in my kitchen. Might be easier to just mix the cubes and hope.

  18. 3 stars
Looks delicious, but I think I could never make something so fancy. Not my skills.

  19. 5 stars
This is such a fun recipe! I made it for my kid’s birthday and they loved it. 🌈

  20. User avatar simon.jacobson66 says:

Not gonna lie, gelatin dessert is kind of my weakness. The cutting and stacking was kinda stressful, but once it set overnight it sliced way cleaner. Solid party idea.

    1. 5 stars
Yes!! This is exactly the kind of party dessert I love—pretty but not crazy once you follow the steps. The overnight set making it slice cleaner is so true.

    2. 3 stars
I tried something similar but my gelatin cubes just turned into mush 😅 I think I didn’t chill long enough. Also, “cut into cubes” feels harder than it sounds—do you mean really small cubes? Still sounds tasty though.

  21. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

    1 star
ugh, this is so boring 😒. Jello is jello. Not worth it.

  22. 5 stars
This looks so fun—like actual stained glass for dessert. I love how the cubes stay distinct instead of turning into one blob. Definitely trying this for a party.

  23. User avatar Barry Manilow says:

    2 stars
Gelatin always scares me, idk why. Like what if it never sets? Still, the ratio here seems pretty straightforward, so I might give it a shot.

    1. User avatar trish.hagenes21 says:

      4 stars
I tried something similar once and it never set… turned out I used the wrong kind of gelatin lol. Your ratio here looks solid though—just make sure you’re measuring by envelopes/packages and not eyeballing the water.

    2. User avatar Saruman the White says:

      5 stars
Honestly same—gelatin can feel intimidating. But if you dissolve the unflavored gelatin completely (boiling water first, then cold water), it usually sets fine. Also giving it the full 4 hours/overnight helps a ton.

  24. 5 stars
I made this for my kids’ birthday and they loved it! A hit for sure!

  25. User avatar Siona Atreides says:

    1 star
Too many steps for me. I just want a simple dessert, not an art project! 🤷‍♂️

  26. User avatar ricarda.jones says:

    4 stars
I made something similar and it turned out super pretty, but my layers got a little weird because I didn’t let the cubes firm up enough. Still tasted amazing though!

    1. User avatar Myles Long says:

      4 stars
I think the key is really letting the cubes firm up hard—otherwise they melt a bit when you stir and it turns more like a swirl than stained glass. Next time, chill closer to 4+ hours and use cold cubes, not just “firm.”

    2. User avatar Galadriel says:

      5 stars
That makes me feel better 😅 I’m always impatient with the chilling step. Yours still sounds like it was a win—pretty layers AND amazing taste!

  27. User avatar myesha.pagac says:

    2 stars
Not really my vibe. Looks like a science experiment that went wrong! But hey, I’m not judging.

    1. User avatar henrietta.lemke2023 says:

I think it looks kinda fun! A cake that looks like art? Count me in! 🎨

  29. User avatar Taisha Beahan says:

Super easy to make! My kids loved it! Only thing is my gelatin didn’t set right… maybe I added too much water.

    1. User avatar blair.deckow says:

      4 stars
Glad your kids enjoyed it! Maybe try less water next time? That might help the gelatin set better.

  30. User avatar pearline.jast1965 says:

I made this last week, but I forgot to put it in the fridge! It was a puddle. Total disaster.

Looks good but isn’t it just jello with milk? Seems kinda basic…

  32. User avatar mana.weissnat14 says:

I made this but it was too sweet for me. Maybe less condensed milk next time?

  33. User avatar keith.mills6 says:

  34. User avatar Cristobal Predovic says:

IDK why, but this recipe ruined my dinner plans. The gelatins didn’t set right. 😩

  35. User avatar sheryl.jenkins1985 says:

What’s with the unflavored gelatin? Isn’t that just a waste? 🤔

    1. User avatar zane.turner says:

      2 stars
But like, why not just use more flavored gelatin? Unflavored seems kinda pointless. 🤷‍♀️

    2. User avatar bret.bahringer70 says:

      5 stars
I think the unflavored gelatin is important for the texture! It helps give the cake that creamy base. It’s not a waste, it’s part of the magic! 🪄

  36. User avatar vern.torphy80 says:

    4 stars
Wow, this reminds me of when I was a kid! My mom used to make something like this, but we called it sparkle cake. Love it! 👍

    1. 5 stars
This is such a sweet memory! My grandma made something similar too, though she never used condensed milk. Gonna give this a try! 🥳

    2. 2 stars
Sparkle cake? Never heard of that. Seems a bit strange to me to mix all those jell-o flavors. Hope it tastes better than it sounds! 🤔

  37. User avatar Lizette Macejkovic says:

    5 stars
Very colorful! Made it for a potluck and it vanished in seconds! Can I use different flavors?

  38. User avatar gabriel.farrell6 says:

    4 stars
This recipe is great, but my layers kinda got mixed up… still tasted good! Next time I’ll be more careful!

  39. 5 stars
This looks *so* fun—like a dessert stained glass window. I’d definitely try it for a party. The condensed milk base sounds dangerously good.

  40. User avatar Charles Darwin says:

    2 stars
This is just sugar with sugar. I don’t get why people like jello this much.

  41. User avatar katherine.herman says:

    4 stars
SO good! I used tropical flavors instead of the regular ones. Everyone said it was the best thing ever!

  42. User avatar robyn.murazik58 says:

    5 stars
Stained glass? More like jello-o-rama! Haha, I love the colors and the idea. Dinner party will be a hit!

  43. User avatar garfield.kautzer1950 says:

    3 stars
Why do you need the unflavored gelatin? Seems unnecessary. 🤔

    1. User avatar Great Fairy says:

      3 stars
I dunno, maybe you could leave it out? Seems like you just wanna add flavor 😂. But I guess it’s to make it creamy or sumthin? 🤷‍♂️

    2. User avatar sol.hudson2005 says:

      5 stars
The unflavored gelatin helps to set the whole thing together without adding more flavor. It gives that creamy base! Totally necessary in my opinion!

  44. User avatar alline.langosh2017 says:

    4 stars
GREAT! Colorful and jelly is fun! But a bit too sweet for me.

    1. User avatar jammie.cassin49 says:

      4 stars
I love it too! The colors are so pretty! Maybe you could use less sugar next time?

  45. 5 stars

    1. User avatar alyse.barrows17 says:

      5 stars
That’s amazing! I’m so glad everyone enjoyed it! It really looks so pretty too! 😍

  46. 4 stars
Five stars for creativity, but gelatin desserts are a gamble in my kitchen 😅. Also 3 hours for the first layer felt short—mine took longer to really firm up.

  47. User avatar roseanna.quigley2 says:

    5 stars
This cake looks so amazing! Can’t wait to make it for my daughter’s birthday. Thanks for sharing!

  48. 3 stars
I don’t know… Gelatin is kinda weird to me. I guess it’s okay for kids?

  49. User avatar branda.ruecker1986 says:

    3 stars
The instructions are hard to follow. Can someone explain step 4?

    1. User avatar Colin the Security Robot says:

      5 stars
Step 4 is where you mix the unflavored gelatin with boiling water. Just make sure to stir it really well until it all dissolves, then add the cold water. It’s pretty simple! Hope that helps!

  50. User avatar danuta.emmerich89 says:

    5 stars
Yummy! My kids loved it. Easy to make and fun to eat. Will definitely make again!

  51. User avatar jimmie.botsford42 says:

    4 stars
I made something similar but didn’t chill long enough, and it turned into a wobbly mess. The instructions about firming and refrigerating overnight feel important.

    1. 5 stars
Yep—chilling is the whole deal with this one. I once rushed the overnight part and it totally slid around instead of slicing clean.

  52. User avatar art.bashirian1986 says:

    3 stars
I tried it and followed the steps exactly. The flavor was nice, but the texture felt more like set gelatin than cake (duh). I guess “cake” is a loose term.

  53. User avatar rosendo.haley59 says:

    3 stars
I’m not sure about 2 envelopes of unflavored gelatin—will it be sturdy enough once you cut the cubes? Might depend on the gelatin brand.

  54. User avatar Antonio Reynolds says:

    2 stars
I was confused about cutting the flavors. I just mixed it all together. LOL!

  55. User avatar sung.paucek30 says:

    3 stars
Did u really put milk in it? Seems kinda weird! 🤔 But maybe I’ll try it.

  56. 5 stars
Wow, this sounds so colorful and fun! Can’t wait to try it for my kid’s birthday party.

    1. User avatar salvatore.grimes24 says:

      3 stars
But is it really safe for kids? That’s a lot of sugar, right?

  59. User avatar lane.mcglynn says:

It’s kinda like edible stained glass, lol. My picky eater asked for seconds. I’m keeping this recipe.

    1. User avatar Yasuko Skiles says:

      5 stars
This is such a fun idea 😂 Like a dessert version of stained glass. Love that your picky eater went back for seconds!

    2. User avatar gustavo.bins88 says:

      3 stars
Sounds cool but I’m skeptical about the texture—when you cut the cubes, do they dissolve too much once you pour the creamy mix over? Also “boiling water + cold water” seems like a lot of liquid… still worth trying though!

  60. User avatar collen.runolfsdottir18 says:

    2 stars
Stained glass? No way is this for real. Seems like too much work.

  66. User avatar damian.osinski says:

    4 stars
This is cool but also why did you use so many different flavors? Can’t we just stick to one?

  67. User avatar christopher.baumbach89 says:

    5 stars
This is such a fun concept—looks like stained glass! I made it for a party and everyone kept asking how I got the cubes so neat. Mine set overnight and sliced way cleaner.

  68. User avatar ivonne.oreilly1959 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but mine didn’t fully slice clean. I think I didn’t dissolve the unflavored gelatin long enough, because there were a few tiny bits. Still tasted amazing though.

  69. 5 stars
I tried it and it came out gorgeous in a clear dish. Tip: cut the cubes small/same size or you’ll get uneven distribution.

    1. User avatar Ward Nicolas says:

      5 stars
Love this tip—uneven cube sizes definitely mess with how the colors distribute. I also like using a clear dish because it really shows the layers.

  70. 4 stars
Tried making this for my kid’s birthday. They loved it! Super easy to make. 👍

I tried this with my grandma but she says the gelatin is too sweet. Maybe less milk next time?

  74. User avatar Piter De Vries says:

This cake tastes like a sugar bomb. I’d rather have plain jello. Sorry, but no thanks!

  75. User avatar joesph.oconner1956 says:

    4 stars
Y’all ever thought about using actual fruit instead? Just a thought…

  76. User avatar alejandra.stamm38 says:

    2 stars
I have to be honest, I’m skeptical about the milk in this. Gelatin and milk? Sounds weird…

  77. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

    2 stars
I followed the recipe, but mine came out super runny. Maybe I did something wrong?

  78. User avatar Android 19 says:

    4 stars
Why sweetened condensed milk? I thought it would be overly sweet, but it actually balanced the flavored gelatin. Only complaint: it’s hard to get perfect slices.

  79. 2 stars
I think the boiling water measurement is off? Like I used 1 cup boiling and 1/2 cup cold and it didn’t fully dissolve at first, had little bits. Maybe I didn’t stir long enough.

  80. User avatar Emily Saunders says:

    5 stars
The condensed milk + unflavored gelatin combo is genius. Super creamy texture without being too sweet. Will definitely make again for summer desserts.

  81. User avatar Michael83 says:

Why don’t you just make the gelatin and eat it? This seems extra.

But that’s the whole point! It looks pretty. Eating just plain gelatin is boring!

I dunno, seems like a lot of work for just some jello. Can’t you just mix it up and call it a day?

I followed it exactly but my cubes floated to the top and kinda muddied. Not sure if my mold was too shallow or if I stirred too hard in step 6. Still tasted good!

This looks like such a fun dessert—my kids would go nuts over the “stained glass” cubes. I’m definitely trying it for a party!

Awww this is such a fun idea! My grandkids would totally go wild for those stained glass cubes too—definitely bookmarking this for our next get-together. 💙

Looks cool but I wonder—do you have to wait 4 hours *after* mixing everything? I might just chill it like an hour and hope. Also “stained glass” sounds fancier than it is lol.

I’m not sure about the sweetened condensed milk part. Seems kinda weird. 🤔

Not gonna lie, I’m skeptical about the texture. Condensed milk + gelatin can be either dreamy or weirdly rubbery. Anyone try it and confirm?

Looks pretty but it’s just jello, not a cake! I mean really…

My grandma used to make a similar thing but with fruit slices. This is just weird, but I guess it’s okay.

I think this is just a fancy jello dish. Not sure it’s worth the time, honestly.

Bland. I expected more flavor from the milk but it only tastes like gelatin.

I followed the directions, but my base ended up a bit rubbery. Next time I’ll make sure the unflavored gelatin fully dissolves instead of rushing step 4.
