Spicy Turkey Tacos

August 30, 2023

Tacos are the ultimate crowd-pleaser, and these Spicy Turkey Tacos bring a whole new level of flavor and heat to the table. Ground turkey is the perfect lean protein to pair with bold spices, and with the right seasonings, it transforms into a savory and spicy filling that will have everyone coming back for seconds.

The key to making these tacos stand out is the balance of heat and flavor. A blend of chili powder, cumin, paprika, and a pinch of cayenne adds a kick, while garlic, onion, and a squeeze of lime bring depth and freshness. The turkey takes on the perfect amount of spice, making it satisfying without being overpowering.

Building these tacos is where the fun begins. The turkey mixture is perfectly tender and flavorful, but it’s the toppings that really bring them to life. Creamy avocado, crisp lettuce, and a generous sprinkle of shredded cheese add contrast to the spicy filling, while a drizzle of tangy sour cream or a dollop of salsa can take them over the top. For an extra layer of heat, top with sliced jalapeños or a splash of hot sauce.

These Spicy Turkey Tacos are not only quick and easy to make, but they’re also versatile. Serve them in soft corn or flour tortillas, or go low-carb by using lettuce wraps instead. Add your favorite toppings, whether that’s a zesty slaw, fresh cilantro, or a squeeze of fresh lime, and you’ve got a taco night that’s bursting with flavor and heat.

Perfect for weeknights when you want something fast but delicious, Spicy Turkey Tacos are a great way to spice up your taco routine and bring something new to the table. Ready in under 30 minutes, they’re an easy go-to for any occasion, whether you’re feeding the family or hosting friends for a casual dinner.

These tacos taste bad. I think it was the turkey, it just tasted wrong.

  2. 5 stars
These came out awesome—juicy turkey, and the salsa + taco seasoning combo is perfect. I added a little extra lime and it really brightened everything. Will make again!

    1. 5 stars
Yesss—exactly what I wanted to hear 😄 The extra lime is such a game changer. Thanks for sharing!

    2. User avatar Crystal Claire Waters says:

      3 stars
I tried it last week but my turkey tasted kinda bland—did you use the same taco seasoning amount? Also I don’t have fresh cilantro so I used dried. Still good though.

  3. User avatar chauncey.walter97 says:

    5 stars
These tacos were a hit at my family dinner! So tasty and easy to make. Will definitely make again!

  4. User avatar jaqueline.heathcote72 says:

I tried making this but had no cheese. It was still okay, but kinda bland. Need cheese!

  5. User avatar ross.hills80 says:

These tacos were a hit! So flavorful and easy to make. Will definitely make again.

    1. User avatar ashleigh.brekke2003 says:

Looks easy, but can you really trust turkey to be flavorful? I always find it kinda dull.

    2. User avatar minda.aufderhar1985 says:

      5 stars
I’m glad you liked them! These tacos are always a winner in my house too.

  6. User avatar darnell.fritsch9 says:

    1 star
👎 Didn’t like it. Way too much salsa!

  7. 3 stars
I’m not a fan of cilantro. Can I leave it out? Also, what’s with the lime? Seems extra.

    1. 4 stars
You can totally leave out the cilantro if you don’t like it! The lime adds a nice zing, but if you think it’s too much, just skip it. It’ll still be good!

    2. 3 stars
Why would you skip the lime? It’s the best part! Cilantro is optional tho, but the lime is essential!

  8. User avatar Slartibartfast says:

    3 stars
Taco shells burnt in oven, not sure how that happened. Just be careful with cooking time.

  9. User avatar Galaxia Woonbeam says:

    4 stars
I’m not usually a cilantro person, so I skipped it and added more cheese. Honestly it was still good and super filling.

    1. User avatar bennie.oberbrunner says:

      5 stars
Same here—I’m not big on cilantro either. More cheese is never a bad move for tacos 😄

  10. 4 stars
I don’t usually use taco seasoning, but this was quick and it worked. The lime at the end really brightens everything.

  11. User avatar val.schultz19 says:

    2 stars
Meh. Ground turkey always tastes a little “watery” to me. I’d rather use chicken thigh or beef. Still, my family ate them.

  12. User avatar scott.heidenreich93 says:

    4 stars
The directions are super straightforward, which I appreciate. However, I cooked the onion longer than 5 minutes and it was way better—more caramelized flavor.

  13. User avatar edgardo.barrows35 says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical about ground turkey, but it turned out delish! My kids loved them.

  14. User avatar Eugene Kassulke says:

    5 stars
Super easy and I loved it!! Avocado made all the difference. đŸ„‘đŸŒź

  15. User avatar louetta.hyatt says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly and it came out kinda bland for me. Maybe my taco seasoning was weak? Added more lime and salt and it helped.

  16. 4 stars
Just mixed it all and ate it in a bowl. Less mess! LOL!

    1. 2 stars
But you’re missing out on the whole taco experience! Eating it in a bowl just ain’t the same.

    2. User avatar willena.dickens1963 says:

      5 stars
Haha, that’s a smart idea! Less mess means more tacos for me!

  17. User avatar mirian.swift1985 says:

    2 stars
meh. i used low fat sour cream and it kinda melted weird. also 8 taco shells for 1 lb turkey might be tight depending how much you pile them.

  18. User avatar noe.hegmann7 says:

    2 stars
Not spicy at all, I was dissapointed. Should I add more seasoning or somethin?

  19. User avatar joe_banana says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid, though I felt like the turkey mixture was a bit dry after the 5 minutes. Next time I’ll add more salsa or a splash of water. Still tasty.

    1. User avatar Harold Luettgen says:

      5 stars
Good call—5 minutes might not be enough for some salsa to really loosen up the turkey. I usually simmer it closer to 8–10 minutes, or I’ll add a splash of water/extra salsa right at the end so it’s not crumbly. Glad you still liked them!

  20. User avatar elliott.kshlerin40 says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly and it was bland until I added salt. After that, it was decent. Maybe taco seasoning brands vary a lot?

  21. User avatar jerrie.mraz1991 says:

    2 stars
Question: do you cook the turkey with the garlic and onion after 5 minutes or before? I might’ve mixed the steps and mine tasted kinda bland.

    1. User avatar petronila.fadel2018 says:

      5 stars
You’re supposed to cook the onion and garlic first (step 2) for about 5 minutes until the onion turns translucent, then you add the ground turkey (step 3). After that you mix in taco seasoning + salsa (step 4). If yours was bland, it might need more seasoning or salt—also make sure your salsa is flavorful.

  22. User avatar arthur.murphy88 says:

    5 stars
Delicious! I added some black beans and corn to the mix, made it even better. Yum!

    1. 5 stars
Sounds great! I never thought of adding black beans and corn. Definitely gonna try that next time. Thanks for sharing!

  23. 5 stars
Spicy but not too spicy! Love how fresh everything tastes!

  24. User avatar Eccentrica Gallumbits says:

    5 stars
Tacos r good. I mean it. next time more lime tho lol.

  25. User avatar chadwick.howell89 says:

    4 stars
I don’t eat turkey, can I use beef instead? Will it taste different?

  26. User avatar jodi.jacobi says:

    3 stars
Looks good but a bit complicated for me. Can you dumb it down?

    1. User avatar edgar.cremin54 says:

      5 stars
If it’s too much, maybe just make a taco salad instead? Less mess and just as yummy!

    2. User avatar Frostbite Spider says:

      4 stars
You could skip some steps! Just cook the turkey and add seasoning, then fill the shells! Easy peasy!

  27. User avatar Falmer Nightprowler says:

    2 stars
Y’all, this was wayyy too spicy! I couldn’t even finish my taco. Maybe less salsa next time.

  28. User avatar Roger Anderson says:

    5 stars
These are the best tacos I’ve ever made! So juicy and full of flavor. My family devoured them!

    1. User avatar Kelle Satterfield says:

      5 stars
I’m glad your family loved them! Tacos are such a hit around my house too!

  29. User avatar Lumberjack says:

    5 stars
Tacos are life! Thank u 4 this recipe! My kids loved it and so did I!

  30. 4 stars
Really easy weeknight meal. I used reduced-fat sour cream and it was still creamy. Onion/garlic timing seems right too.

  31. User avatar johnson.gulgowski94 says:

    5 stars
These came out so flavorful! The salsa + taco seasoning combo is perfect and the turkey stays nice and juicy. I added a pinch of chili flakes just because—highly recommend.

  32. User avatar jin.larkin says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but the directions feel a little generic. Like how much olive oil? I guessed and it was fine, just annoying.

    1. 4 stars
Yeah I get you—this is super close, but the olive oil amount is missing. I usually do like 1–2 tbsp and it turns out fine, but I agree it’d be nicer if the recipe just said it.

  33. User avatar owen.sporer71 says:

    4 stars
1 cup shredded cheese and 1 cup salsa sounds kinda low? I doubled the cheese and it was way more satisfying. This is not a complaint, just my preference.

  34. 4 stars
Pretty solid recipe! I used low-sodium salsa and it still had good flavor. Next time I might add sliced jalapeños for extra kick.

  35. 5 stars
I made this for friends and everyone asked for the recipe. The avocado + sour cream combo is perfect balance for the spice.

    1. 5 stars
Yes!! Avocado + sour cream really tames the heat without taking away the flavor. I did almost the same thing and my friends also asked for the recipe 😄

    2. User avatar jesse.mills71 says:

      4 stars
I tried it but my sour cream kinda disappeared? Like it melted too fast maybe my tacos were too hot. Still tasted good though. Next time I’ll put the toppings on after I turn off the stove lol.

  36. User avatar Billy Gislason says:

    4 stars
Quick & easy! I just threw everything in the pan! Lol

  37. User avatar brandon.robel13 says:

    5 stars
So good! I’m usually skeptical about ground turkey tacos but this one actually hits like beef. The lime wedges are non-negotiable.

    1. 5 stars
Right?! Ground turkey usually feels so
bland to me, but the seasoning + salsa totally makes up for it. And yes—lime wedges for the win. 🌼

  38. 2 stars
    Eh
I used pre-minced garlic and it tasted weirdly sharp. Maybe fresh garlic matters. Overall okay, but I wouldn’t call it “spicy.”

    1. User avatar ava.huels1952 says:

      5 stars
Yeah, fresh garlic can make a big difference. Pre-minced sometimes has a sharper bite—especially if it sits around. Agree it’s more “zesty” than truly spicy.

  39. User avatar estela.lebsack67 says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but why does it say “warm taco shells in the oven”? Mine got crunchy too fast and I burned two. Maybe I’m doing it wrong.

  40. User avatar Johanne Kulas says:

    5 stars
I added some extra spice and it was a perfect kick! This is now my go-to taco recipe.

  41. User avatar lonna.sipes75 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about using 1 lb ground turkey instead of beef, but it actually tasted great. The avocado on top is a must.

  42. 4 stars
Pretty solid recipe. I used pre-minced garlic (oops) and it still tasted good. Next time I’ll go heavier on cilantro and maybe add some black beans.

  43. User avatar ivory.frami23 says:

    5 stars
These were seriously so good—juicy turkey and the salsa really makes it pop. I added a pinch of cumin too and it tasted even better. 10/10 taco night.

  44. User avatar jaunita.dooley2000 says:

    4 stars
The lime is a must! It really brings the flavors out, but, uh, where’s the taco sauce?

    1. User avatar william.leuschke says:

      3 stars
Not sure why you’d want taco sauce when salsa is already in there. Just add more salsa if you’re missing flavor!

    2. User avatar daren.weissnat says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! The lime just lifts everything up! But taco sauce would be great too, maybe they forgot it?

  45. User avatar ramiro.oconnell says:

    5 stars
    Yummy!

  46. User avatar reynalda.macgyver87 says:

    3 stars
I followed the recipe but it turned out too spicy for my kids. Next time I’ll use less taco seasoning!

  47. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

    2 stars
Eh, not my favorite. The turkey was kinda dry even with the salsa. Probably won’t make again.

  48. User avatar valentina.reichert90 says:

    5 stars
Turkey tacos are kinda bland normally, but this one had spice! I used hot salsa and it actually kicked. 10/10 for weekday dinner.

  49. 3 stars
I ain’t never used turkey before, but these tacos were just okay in my opinion.

  50. 3 stars
Not bad, but 2 tbsp taco seasoning felt a bit salty to me with the salsa I had. I’d cut it down or use a milder salsa next time.

  51. User avatar gus.schinner0 says:

    4 stars
Could I swap the ground turkey for ground chicken? Also, I don’t have cilantro—will parsley work? Anyone tried it?

    1. User avatar rod.abshire40 says:

      3 stars
      I mean
cilantro is kind of the whole thing, so parsley might taste “off.” But if you chop it fine and use a bit extra, it’ll probably still be good. Also, if your taco seasoning is already spicy, you might not even miss it.

    2. User avatar reina.leannon14 says:

      5 stars
Yep—ground chicken should work just fine (same cook time/browning, just keep an eye on it so it doesn’t dry out). For cilantro, parsley is a decent swap, though the flavor will be a little different—go for fresh parsley if you can.

  52. User avatar jesse.wiza says:

    3 stars
I don’t know what it is about turkey tacos, they always seem dry to me. This recipe helped, but I still had to add a splash more salsa.

  53. User avatar moises.lesch says:

    3 stars
I don’t see the point in using turkey. Beef is the way to go for tacos. But the recipe was ok.

  54. User avatar joaquin.pouros says:

    4 stars
I thought ground turkey was gonna be dry, but this was pretty good. I added some jalapeños for extra heat!

  55. User avatar marilee.heaney85 says:

    4 stars
I followed it mostly, but my taco shells got a little too toasty in the oven. Flavor was still good though—couldn’t stop eating them.

  56. 3 stars
How can you use taco seasoning with turkey? Should’ve used beef for real flavor.

    1. User avatar Hotblack Desiato's bodyguard says:

      4 stars
I think turkey works just fine! It’s leaner and can taste great with the right seasoning. Give it a shot!

  57. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    2 stars
Gotta say, it’s okay. Turkey is just
not like beef. Also, my shells broke a little (I should’ve warmed them less).

    1. 4 stars
Yeah, I get that—turkey has a different flavor/texture than beef, but taco seasoning + salsa does a lot. And good call about warming the shells less—those things turn to crumbs fast if they go too long 😅

  58. User avatar lynsey.weimann53 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about 1 lb turkey being enough for 8 tacos, but it worked out. Took a little longer to brown than I expected, though.

  59. User avatar Sand-Dial says:

    5 stars
    Yum! These r sooooo good!!

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree! I made these last night and my family loved them too. So flavorful!

  60. User avatar nickolas.pfannerstill says:

    4 stars
I’m not a cilantro person, so I swapped it for green onion. Worked surprisingly well. Would definitely make again.

  61. User avatar christian.hickle1982 says:

    3 stars
I liked it, but 1/2 cup of cilantro felt like a lot for me. I also found the turkey mixture a bit dry until I simmered it 10 minutes instead of 5.

  62. 4 stars
The avocado on top is the move. Makes it creamy and balances the heat. Family approved here.

  63. User avatar faustino.bogisich37 says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have all the ingredients on hand, so I used beef instead. Still turned out tasty! 😋

  64. 5 stars
These were a hit! The salsa + taco seasoning combo made the turkey really flavorful, and the avocado/tangy lime brought it together perfectly.

    1. User avatar justin.cummings89 says:

      4 stars
Mine were good too but I think 2 tbsp taco seasoning was a bit much for me—next time I’ll do 1.5 tbsp. Also I forgot to warm the shells once and they were kinda sad 😅

    2. 5 stars
Yes!! Salsa + taco seasoning is such a solid combo. I usually add a little extra lime and it’s always a crowd-pleaser. Glad you enjoyed it!

  65. 3 stars
I followed the recipe but my taco shells got chewy instead of crispy. My oven runs hot. Flavor though was on point—cilantro and lime saved it.

  66. User avatar monty.little27 says:

    2 stars
This recipe iz too complicated for tacos. I just want to slap stuff in a shell! Not for me.

  67. User avatar Corrupted Shade says:

    5 stars
OMG, my new favorite recipe! The combo of turkey and avocado is just perfection.

  68. User avatar cira.deckow76 says:

    5 stars
The cilantro + lime pairing is top tier. I ate like 4 tacos and regretted nothing.

  69. User avatar Super Saiyan 2 Vegeta says:

    3 stars
Ok but can we just admit taco shells in the oven always burn if you blink? Mine got a little crispy-beyond-cosmetic.

  70. 5 stars
These tacos taste like something you’d get at a casual taco place. The lime at the end really wakes it up.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—those lime wedges at the end make the whole thing taste fresher. I also add a squeeze right before serving.
