Pumpkin Mac and Cheese is a comforting and flavorful twist on the classic mac and cheese. This fall-inspired version combines the richness of creamy cheese sauce with the subtle sweetness of pumpkin, creating a dish that’s both savory and a little sweet. The addition of pumpkin gives the cheese sauce a velvety texture, while its earthy flavor pairs perfectly with the sharpness of cheese. Whether you’re craving something cozy for a chilly night or looking to impress guests with a seasonal dish, this recipe is sure to become a fall favorite.
The base of pumpkin mac and cheese is a creamy cheese sauce made with milk, butter, and a blend of cheeses such as sharp cheddar and Gruyère. The addition of pure pumpkin puree adds a rich, creamy texture and a hint of sweetness, which beautifully complements the savory flavors of the cheese. A touch of garlic, nutmeg, and a sprinkle of cinnamon enhance the pumpkin’s natural flavors, giving the dish a warm, comforting depth.
The pasta, usually elbow macaroni, is cooked al dente and tossed in the creamy pumpkin cheese sauce. The result is a comforting, rich, and creamy dish that feels indulgent without being overly heavy. For added texture, top the mac and cheese with a buttery breadcrumb topping and bake it in the oven until golden and crispy. This extra step adds a satisfying crunch that contrasts with the creamy pasta, making each bite even more enjoyable.
Pumpkin Mac and Cheese is incredibly versatile. You can customize it by adding extras like crispy bacon, sautéed onions, or a handful of spinach for added color and flavor. If you want a bit of spice, a pinch of cayenne pepper or smoked paprika can give the dish a subtle kick. It pairs wonderfully with a light salad or roasted vegetables, making it a great choice for any meal, from casual weeknight dinners to festive holiday spreads.
Whether you’re serving it to family, friends, or enjoying it yourself, Pumpkin Mac and Cheese is a perfect way to embrace the flavors of fall while enjoying a comforting, cheesy favorite.

Deliciously Fall.. To “Fall” in love with Mac all over again!!!!
This is soooo good! I loved the blend of pumpkin and cheese. Perfect for fall! 🍂
Super easy and delicious! I added some extra spices. Recommend!
Mac n cheese?! Pumpkin?! Yuck!
Made this last night and it’s cozy in a different way than regular mac. The sauce turned out super creamy, and the nutmeg is a nice touch.
Simple and delicious! I added some bacon for extra flavor. Yummy!
I followed the recipe exactly but mine turned out kinda grainy? I think I may have overheated the cheese. Still edible though. Will try again and keep the heat lower.
The sauce thickened nicely, but I had to whisk a bit longer in step 3 or it got a tiny bit lumpy. Still delicious—comfort food with a twist.
Is pumpkin suppose to go with cheese? Just feels wrong. I was skeptical but gave it a go. Okay but not my fave.
This was surprisingly good! The pumpkin adds a nice creaminess. Will make again!
I was skeptical about pumpkin in mac and cheese, but wow! This is delicious!
My kids said it’s ‘orange pasta’ lol but they ate it all. I think the garlic powder was the missing magic.
Orange pasta is the best kind 😂 Glad your kids liked it! Also yes—garlic powder really does make a difference.
Hmm pumpkin in mac n cheese sounds… questionable, but if they ate it all then I’ll trust you. I might add a bit more garlic powder next time.
I’m not gonna lie, I was skeptical. But OMG, this is bomb! Who knew? LOL.
Glad you liked it! I was also surprised how good it turned out. Perfect for fall vibes! 🍂
Okay so I used canned pumpkin and it was fine, but I think I under-salted. Flavor felt a little flat until I added more salt at the end.
Kinda bland. I added more garlic and some chili flakes, and it helped a bit, but still not great.
Delish!! My new favorite dish! Get in my belly!
Tasted kinda strange. I don’t think pumpkin belongs in mac and cheese. Just my opinion.
I didn’t have nutmeg so I used cinnamon… don’t do that unless you like pumpkin pie vibes. The base recipe is fine, but the spice swap ruined it for me.
This is a delicious twist on regular mac and cheese! My kids loved it!
I tried this and my kids wouldn’t even touch it! No way I’m making this again.
That’s a bummer! Maybe the kids just aren’t into pumpkin? You could try adding more cheese next time!
This sounds weird but actually so good! I loved it!
Wow, I would have never thought to mix pumpkin and mac & cheese! Sounds intriguing! Gonna try it soon.
This is a game changer! Never thought pumpkin could be in mac and cheese. So creamy!
Meh. Tastes kinda sweet and I couldn’t get the seasoning right. Maybe I used too much salt? Not my favorite.
Yea, I made it but it didn’t really taste like mac and cheese to me. More like weird soup.
Just made this, but I used gouda instead of cheddar. Was that a bad idea? 🤔
Quick and easy recipe! I added bacon bits for a twist.
I think pumpkin is a weird ingredient for pasta. Not impressed. 1/5!
Not a fan here either. Pumpkin in mac and cheese just sounds off to me. Sticking with traditional flavors!
I actually love pumpkin in pasta! It’s creamy and adds a unique flavor. You should give it a try!
This is a great recipe! I used almond milk instead of regular milk and it was still great!
I don’t think almond milk would work well in this recipe. Isn’t it too thin compared to regular milk?
I’m glad you enjoyed it! Almond milk is a great substitute. I’ll have to try that next time!
I made this for a potluck, and everyone went nuts over it! Will make again for sure.
Good idea, but 2 cups of cheddar feels like a typo? Mine came out kind of thick and not as cheesy as I expected. Maybe I measured wrong.
Literally just made this and my kitchen smells great! Pumpkins for the win!
I can’t wait to try this! Pumpkin and cheese, what a combo!
Sounds good but I dunno, isn’t that a weird mix? Pumpkin in mac and cheese?
Easy to make. Kids loved it! But I think it needed more cheese.
I don’t know about this pumpkin thing. I just like my mac and cheese simple.
Tasted way better than I thought it would, my kids devoured it! 💛
Pumpkin and cheese together? Sounds weird but it’s actually bomb! 😍
Pumpkin and cheese? Eww, that sounds gross. Can’t be good! 👎
I was skeptical at first too, but it really does work! 🍂🧀
This tastes good but my cheese didn’t fully melt smooth. I think the cheddar was older or the heat was too high. Could use a bit more guidance on that part.
I followed the steps exactly, but mine got a little thick too fast—had to add extra milk. Still tasty though. Next time I’ll whisk more patiently.
I thought this would be good but it was kinda bland. Needs more seasoning!
I found it bland too! Try adding a bit more cheese or some Italian herbs next time. It’ll make a difference!
I don’t like pumpkin and this just wasn’t for me. Too sweet.
Cozy fall vibes in a bowl! The pumpkin flavor is subtle but the sauce is super creamy. I added a bit more nutmeg and it was perfect.
Yes!! This sounds exactly like the fall comfort food I’ve been craving. I love that the pumpkin is subtle—too much can be weird sometimes. Gonna try your extra nutmeg tip 👌
I dunno… pumpkin in mac n cheese feels kinda odd to me. Also if you add more nutmeg won’t it get bitter? But I guess creamy sauce helps. Might try half a cup pumpkin next time.
