Recreate the classic taste of Popeye’s Mashed Potatoes and Gravy at home with this simple and delicious copycat recipe.
Popeye’s mashed potatoes and gravy have a devoted following, and for good reason. The potatoes are smooth and creamy, while the Cajun-style gravy adds a bold, peppery kick that sets it apart from more traditional versions. It’s comfort food with personality, and recreating it at home is easier than you might think.
The mashed potatoes themselves are all about balance – fluffy, buttery, and seasoned just enough to stand on their own. You don’t want them too dense or too thin. Using russet potatoes gives you that light texture, and a mix of butter, milk, and a little cream brings in the richness. But the real secret to nailing that Popeye’s flavor is in the gravy.
The gravy is what transforms this side into something special. Unlike a basic brown gravy, Popeye’s version is darker, richer, and seasoned with a distinctive Southern flair. It starts with a roux – a mixture of fat and flour cooked until golden brown, then layers in beef or chicken broth, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and a hint of cayenne. Some copycat versions even include a bit of bacon grease or sausage drippings for that deeper, smokier flavor.
What makes this dish fun to replicate is how customizable it can be. You can adjust the spice level to your liking, use vegetable broth for a meatless version, or keep it classic with buttery potatoes and a peppery gravy just like the fast-food favorite. It’s a great addition to fried chicken, meatloaf, or even a holiday table.

These mashed potatoes are AMAZING! Tasted just like Popeye’s, my kids loved them!
Too much butter for my taste. Also, who needs gravy when you got ketchup? Just sayin’!
Ketchup? Seriously? That’s a crime against mashed potatoes! Gravy is where it’s at, way better than ketchup.
I think you should give it a try with less butter! But ketchup on mashed potatoes? That’s a bold choice! I’d stick with gravy.
These potatoes are delish! Next time I might add garlic or cheese for a kick. Yum!
I tried making this but it came out kinda watery… what went wrong? Anyone else have this issue?
Made these and they was gud, but my dog wouldn’t eat it. 🤷♂️ IDK why.
My kids cant stand mashed potatoes but loved this! Winner!
That’s awesome! My kids are the same, they usually hate mashed potatoes too. I gotta try this recipe ASAP!
Really? I don’t get how kids don’t like mashed potatoes. Maybe try adding more cheese or something?
I used beef broth instead of chicken and it turned out great!
Beef broth? That’s a wild twist! Never thought of that. I might try it next time!
Yea I dunno, tasted kinda bland to me. More salt!!!
Pretty good copycat vibes. I might reduce the salt slightly though—the gravy tasted a tad salty to me. Still, the texture was spot on.
These mashed potatoes are so creamy! Just like Popeye’s! Love em!
I made these yesterday and they were a hit! Thanks for sharing!
Made this tonight and it came out super creamy! I let the gravy thicken a minute longer than the recipe and it was perfect over the mash. Definitely a keeper.
“Super creamy” sounds good, but I always worry about getting the gravy too thick. Did you use whole milk or can 2% work? Also, is the gravy supposed to be kinda lumpy after whisking? My last one was not smooth 😅
Yes!! I did the same—one extra minute on the thickening and it clings to the mash perfectly. Such a good copycat.
Eh, they were okay. My mom’s potatoes are way better… just saying.
The gravy was too salty. Next time, I will skip the extra salt.
I used half the butter, and it still turned out great! Win!
Y’all, this is just like Popeye’s! I’m obsessed, making it again!
I tried this recipe and it turned out horrible! The gravy was too watery. Never again.
Horrible? I thought it was great! Must be you cooked it wrong or something.
Sorry to hear that! Maybe the roux wasn’t cooked long enough? I’ve had that issue before too.
I was skeptical, but wow this is spot on! My family loved it!
Really? You think it tastes like Popeye’s? I dunno, my mashed potatoes never come out that good.
So glad to hear that! I’ve always loved Popeye’s mashed potatoes, can’t wait to try this recipe myself!
Not bad, but mine got lumpy when I added the broth. Next time I’ll whisk harder and maybe strain the roux. Flavor still decent.
Ugh lumpy gravy is the worst 😅 Next time I’d whisk the broth in SLOWWW and keep stirring the whole time—also straining the roux like you said would help a ton.
Maybe you whisked the flour too long? I feel like the roux turns grainy if you cook it like 10 minutes. Try less heat and more water first? Still, glad it tasted decent!
Easy recipe but my kids wouldn’t eat em 😒.
OMG these potatoes taste just like Popeye’s! I could eat them every day! Yum 😋
potato good 😀 gravy no understand. why need gravy? just potato?
I tried this and it was a disaster. My potatoes turned into glue!
I’m sorry to hear that! Maybe you overcooked the potatoes? They should be tender but not mushy. Give it another shot!
Gluey potatoes? How did that happen? You sure you followed the recipe? Seems simple enough.
Mashed potatoes? Who even eats that? I prefer rice. 🤷♂️
1 teaspoon salt for 4 cups potatoes?? That seems low to me. I’m sure it’s fine but my potatoes were kinda sad. 😅
Too much butter for my taste. Just made it all greasy.
I think the butter is part of what makes them creamy! Maybe next time try using less?
Not gonna lie, the whole roux thing feels a little overkill for mashed potatoes. Also, 1 teaspoon salt for everything seems low. I’d rather just use the instant gravy mix from the store.
I don’t know what the fuss is about. They tasted like any other mashed potatoes. 😕
Love this!
Not sure about the gravy texture… was kinda lumpy.
I had the same issue! Maybe try whisking it more to smooth out the lumps. Good luck!
Tried this tonight and it was shockingly close. The gravy thickened exactly how I wanted—no lumps. My whole family went back for seconds.
I tried it but mine got kinda thick too fast, like paste-ish, not smooth. I whisked but maybe my heat was too high? Still tasted good though—just needed more water/broth. Would you recommend scaling the liquid next time?
Wow, this makes me so happy to hear! That “no lumps” part is always the struggle with gravy—great job getting the roux right. Seconds for the whole family is the best review 😄
Simple and good! Just like I remember having at Popeye’s 😊.
These came out super creamy—like diner-style comfort food. I used Yukon Golds and fresh pepper, and the gravy thickened nicely after whisking.
My children loved these potatoes! They asked for seconds! 😄
I think real Popeye’s uses a different kind of potato. These are good but not exact.
I get what you’re saying, but I’ve made this recipe a few times and it’s pretty close! Maybe it depends on the potatoes you use? 🤔
Mashed potat0s are overrated. Just eat ’em from a box, easier! LOL.
Yum! Will definitely make this on Thanksgiving! 👏
This sounds amazing! Perfect for Thanksgiving! Can’t wait to try it! 🥔🥳
These potatoes are so creamy! Best recipe ever!
I tried this but my gravy didn’t thicken. What did I do wrong? 😟
Maybe you didn’t cook the roux long enough? It needs time to thicken. Don’t give up! 😃
Tried this last night and it’s crazy close to what I remember—creamy mash and a gravy that actually thickens. I used Yukon Gold and didn’t even need to add extra seasoning. 10/10.
These are the best mashed potatoes. Perfect for holiday dinners. Thanks for sharing!
These mashed potatoes are like a hug in a bowl! So creamy and delicious! 🥰
OMG, I totally agree! I can’t stop eating these! 😍
Hug in a bowl? Really? I just think they are too bland. Maybe add some garlic? 🤔
It was alright but I feel like it needed something more. Maybe a hint of garlic or cheese would help?
Super easy to make! I added some garlic for extra flavor. Yum!
Sounds good, but isn’t this recipe just like regular mashed potatoes? Why bother copying Popeye’s?
Yeah, garlic makes everything better! I need to try that next time. Thanks for the tip!
Gravy doesn’t need water, guys! Stick with just chicken broth for thickness! 🤦♂️
Potato masher? Who uses that? I just use a fork, whatever works! 😂
Mashed potatoes are life! This recipe made it so easy. Thank you!
Pretty good base recipe, but my gravy took longer than 5 minutes to thicken. I ended up adding a tiny bit more flour (like 1/2 tbsp) and it worked. Still tasted great!
I added some garlic powder and it was fire! 🔥
Mashed potatoes + gravy? YES. Easy comfort food.
Mashed potatoes + gravy? YES. This looks like pure comfort food and the steps are super straightforward.
I’m gonna try it but I don’t have chicken broth—can I use beef broth or just bouillon water? Also, is 2 tbsp flour enough for 2 cups liquid? Sounds a little thin to me.
Quick and easy recipe! I loved making this. Thanks! 👍
Uh, isn’t mashed potatoes with gravy like a thing we already know how to make?
Okay but… why “remaining butter” when the recipe only says 3 tbsp total? I’m new to cooking, so I got confused and just used all 3 tbsp for the roux AND the mash. It still tasted decent though. Please clarify!
Good catch! The “remaining butter” wording is a little confusing—there’s actually 3 tbsp total. You use some of it for the mash (step 2 calls for “softened butter”), and whatever isn’t used yet is what’s left for the roux in step 3. If you used all 3 tbsp in the mash, you won’t have any left for the gravy part, but your gravy can still come together a bit differently.
Not sure about the roux step. I cooked the flour “about 1 minute” and I still had that raw flour taste. Next time I’ll cook it longer and whisk more aggressively.
This was super hard to make. I don’t know why everyone loves it soooo much.
I dunno, maybe I’m just not good at cooking, but mine turned out too watery. 🤷♂️
I don’t know… 2 tbsp flour for 2 cups broth feels light? I added extra flour and it finally thickened. Maybe my broth was different.
Yeah, 2 tbsp flour for 2 cups broth can be a little light depending on your broth and how much it reduces. Glad you got it to thicken!
Delicious! My kids loved it! I added a pinch of paprika for some extra flavor.
I followed it exactly but mine came out kinda bland, which is wild because I used fresh pepper. Maybe my broth was low-sodium? Next time I’ll salt the gravy more before serving.
That sounds like a seasoning/broth issue for sure. If your broth was low-sodium, the whole gravy can come out a little muted even with fresh pepper. Next time add a pinch of salt to the gravy while it thickens, and taste as you go.
Tastes close to Popeye’s (at least to my memory). My only issue was the gravy got a little lumpy until I whisked harder. Next time I’ll whisk constantly from the start.
Gravy was too salty for my taste. Maybe cut down on salt next time.
